For solid–liquid separation, filter meshes are still used across large areas today, as they offer a cost-effective alternative, for example, compared to membranes. However, particle interaction leads to a continuous blocking of the pores, which lowers the flow rate of the mesh and reduces its lifetime. This can be remedied by filter aids. In precoat filtration, these provide an already fully formed filter cake on the fabric, which acts as a surface and depth filter. This prevents interaction of the particles to be separated with the mesh and thus increases the service life of the mesh. In this

Polymeric flocculants are widely used throughout the water industry as flocculant aids, they are known to increase floc density and aid settlement in the clarification stage of the water treatment process. In this research, polymeric flocculants were used to improve floc strength prior to filtration on a dissolved air flotation (DAF) plant in an attempt to prevent filter breakthrough. A modified jar test procedure using a PDA (photometric dispersion analyser) optical flocculation monitor was developed in order to evaluate the system floc strength. Filtration trials were carried out on a pilot

According to regulations, the cross-section of Wangjiawopeng is regarded as a national control section of the Daling River. The water quality of the section must meet the surface water level III standard. According to the survey, the total phosphorus in the effluent from the sewage plant in Jianchang exceeds the standard is the main reason for the failure of the water quality. In order to make the cross-section water quality reaching standard, it is necessary to carry out the advanced treatment of phosphorus in the sewage plant. Beer is a complex mixture consisting of hundreds of chemical substances. Some of them are macromolecules, such as proteins and polysaccharides that together with polyphenolic compounds form poorly soluble complexes causing beer turbidity or cold colloidal turbidity. Furthermore, beer turbidity can be caused also by procedural particles entering into beer during brewing process (filtration and stabilization aids) or by foreign particles from external environment (mechanical impurities). If turbidity, sediment or individual particles occur in filtered and stabilized beer, their origin must be de

The application of laser diffraction particle monitoring to the performance optimisation of a pilot clarifier and full-scale rapid gravity filters (RGF), operating on water supply works in Hampshire, is described. Furthermore the dosing of powdered activated carbon (PAC) into the works' clarifiers has been evaluated in terms of RGF performance. A costly proposal to install a third filter medium was subsequently abandoned when it was found that particle numbers in the filtered water were consistently below 1×102/ml. Abstract The effect of perfluorochemical blood substitutes (eg, Oxypherol or Fluosol-DA) on red cell deformability was investigated because these emulsions are in direct contact with red cells when they are used as temporary circulatory aids. Erythrocyte deformability was assessed by a constant volumetric flow rate filtration method. The results of in vitro incubation experiments indicate that perfluorotributylamine causes the deformability of human red cells to decrease significantly in the presence of plasma. However, there is no obvious loss in the deformability when washed cells are used.
