Full textThis work is an example of Micro Optical Electrical Mechanical Systems (MOEMS). The aim was to realize a tunable Fabry-Perot filter with an optical length less important than in the previous works. This kind of device bas many applications for the telecommunications systems and the interferometric sensors. This filter which is integrated to an optical bench can work in different wavelengths. It's an example of a full-wafer structuring process which makes use of the advantage of silicon machining. Anisotropic etching techniques allow the fabrication of low cost structures with a very high precision. Ln the first part, we propose a system with a micro thermal actuator which allow the displacement of a micro-lens supported by a movable silicion frame. This lens permits the focusing of the beam which results from an optical fiber or a Laser diode. The Fabry-Perot cavity is obtained by the deposition of reflective layers to form the mirrors on the exit facet of the first lens and the input facet of the second one. We have mainly worked on the actuator modeling and we present two models of a thermomechanical in-plane microactuator by using an analytical model and a Finite Element simulation. We demonstrate a good agreement between both models. This study shows that we can develop this model for more complex structures. Different technological processes have been developped to solve some etching problems (the use of compensations to avoid under-etching, perfect vertical walls. . . ). Comparisons between theory and experimental results (temperature and displacement) validate the steady-state conditions and demonstrate the importance of several thermal phenomena. The actuator bas been successfully used in a Fabry-Perot interferometer : a finesse of 25 was obtained for a 830 nm laser diode

Full textThe design of microwave bandpass filter generally requires optimization or fine-tuning of the physical design parameters in order to meet the electrical specifications given by a frequency template. In this thesis we develop models to assist the designer in the time-efficient physical design of the distributed element microwave filters. The aim is to incorporate these models in different CAD methods. By a time-efficient design, we mean a design that requires a low number of EM simulations. The EM-simulations typically represent the most time-consuming step during the optimization process. We propose different modeling approaches for the frequency response behavior of the filter. The first approach models the coupling matrix as a function of the physical design parameters and the second approach models the scattering parameters, again as a function of the physical parameters. In the first part we focus on the extraction of the coupling matrix. We introduce a novel CAT technique based on an efficient estimation of the Jacobian of the function relating the design parameters to the coupling parameters. The estimation of the Jacobian uses adjoint sensitivity analysis, which drastically reduces the number of required EM-simulations. In the second part of the thesis we propose an alternative modeling approach which is based on the concept of a metamodel. The idea is that the metamodel is numerically much cheaper to evaluate than the original simulation model while keeping an acceptable accuracy. We apply these methods to several state of-the-art microstrip bandpass filters

Full textThis memoir aims to study the design, fabrication and characterization of filters based on contra-directional couplers on silicon. These are a type of filter still little known, similar to Bragg gratings, but reflecting the light in an other waveguide. To understand why optical filters are important to improve, this memoir starts by introducing the basis of optical communications. The principles of silicon photonics are then explained, to understand how to manipulate light using micro-electronics materials. The devices available on silicon are enumerated, with a special attention given to optical filters. Contra-directional couplers are explained in detail in chapter 2. This chapter explains the known principles, adapting them to be able to simulate apodization and phase noise in these devices. The original laboratory research is shown in chapters 3 and 3. The first article demonstrates that it is possible to fabricate contra-directional couplers using photolithography despite the small features required. The second one uses contra-directional couplers to create a tunable filter displaying the greatest tunable bandwidth range measured in silicon filters. Testing these devices has been an important part of the work. The last chapter is about the characterization of silicon devices using an automated setup. This chapter aims to explain all the details of the design, alignment and test to document the procedure for future students. In sum, this work shows that silicon contra-directional couplers are an appealing solution for many applications which require optical filters such as reconfigurable networks and broadband channels.

Full textThis work takesplace in the context of developingelectronic systems for communications equipment, localization or monitoringequipment with a high integration density. The deployment of these systems must also meet a growing demand for flexibility in terms of frequencies, power or coverage. The frequency flexibility can be simultaneous with multiband devices or selective by reconfiguring the frequency band. The power flexibility enables to minimize consumption of the system and the coverage flexibility to direct the beam to the target to optimize the budget link or otherwise protect a source of noise. The increase in efficiency and compactness passes through the combination of elementary functions (LNA / filter / antenna) that reduces interconnect floors and considering the interactions between the different elements. The primary objective of this project is to develop a co-design methodology of the antenna with the associated circuits (filters and LNA) to achieve optimal performances (radiation, efficiency, ...) with an integrated and compact device

Full textThe 60 GHz unlicensed spectrum between 57 and 66 GHz has received a lot of attention over the last years for enabling short-range and over 1-Gbps high-speed wireless communications. In addition to the high-data rates that can be accomplished in this spectrum, many other benefits such as high security communications are foreseen. In general, this frequency band is destined to low power and short range fixed or mobile applications. To benefit from high-speed within a compact device, it is required to realize a subsystem combining a directional antenna and a multiplexer with the same technological process. The 3D ceramic stereo lithography process has been selected to ensure the dimensional accuracy and limit the inevitable dispersions. This thesis contributes to achieve directional antennas at 60GHz by a combined antenna design and filter, and perform this function in the same technology the 3D ceramic stereo lithography process when connecting the filter with the antenna. Therefore, the first challenge is to design and to manufacture the primary feed of the directive antenna and the channel filters using the 3D ceramic process. The second challenge is to combine the primary feed and the 4 channel filters to form a single object. The filter-antenna subsystem allows to have a directivity of approximately 14 dBi. Therefore, the radiation of the horn antenna remains unchanged over the whole frequency band [57-66]GHz by associating the manifold multiplexer. The filter-antenna subsystem provides a return loss better than 10 dB at each port

Full textModem systems of telecommunication concern an increasingly large audience, this induces unrelentingly an intense use of the microwave spectrum. To avoid saturation of the available services, specifications on the systems are increasingly demanding and these drastic constraints are deferred on the various elements and in particular on filters. In this PhD dissertation, we present a new technology of filters, the objective is here to improve electric performances of filters without giving up the ease of realization of these circuits. Thus, in the first chapter, we introduce the two historical technologies of filters, planar and waveguide ones. A new technique combining advantages of these two technologies is then presented. This one is called Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) and consists in delimitating cavities into the planar substrate. In the second chapter, we propose improvements concerning this SIW technique, improvements are related not only to topologies of the resonators but also to couplings between resonators. In the last chapter, we present a new topology of filter based on a constructive recombination between planar elements and integrated cavities. We also present the synthesis of this novel topology called Hybrid Planar Waveguide Resonator (HPWR). Main advantages of this topology are an easy design as well as good electric performances

Full textVolumic filters are very selective but their integration to the rest of the circuit is still a difficulty. Silicon micromachining authorizes the design of new structures that can be more easily integrated. The solution described in this manuscript belongs to this new category of filters and presents the following characteristics: a high resonant frequency (60 GHz), a new feeding structure and the possibility to obtain an elliptic filtering response to improve the selectivity. For the design, a 3D finite element method (FEM) software is used, which was implemented by IRCOM. The fabrications have been made in the clean rooms of THALES and an experimental unloaded quality factor greater than 1000 has been achieved. Measurements of two-pole and four-pole filters validate the coupling systems and prove the possibility to obtain an elliptic response

Full textAccording to their level of selectivity, while designing narrow bandpass filters, we faced up to difficulties due to design control in keeping with models accuracy on the one hand, and on the other hand, with important insertion losses levels of such devices. Within this context, a design method was implemented using both circuit and electromagnetic simulations. Such a method is based on DOE (Design Of Experiment) statistical sensitivity studies, which allow one to establish the a priori knowledge of the filter electrical characteristic behaviour. Hence, one can correct the filter dimensions as efficiently as possible. Several filter topologies were presented (coupled-lines filters, interdigital filters and DBR filters) that were developed following on the proposed design method. Once the method efficacy had been proved in centimetric domain, in terms of design control as well as electrical performances improvement, it was transposed in millimetric frequency range. Hence, two technological paths developed at the IEMN laboratory were used: III-V path for coplanar technology development and Si-BCB path for devices in microstrip technology. Finally, the design method efficacy allowed one to develop novel topologies, more complex, so as to improve the filter out-of-band electrical characteristics. Two solutions were studied: transmission zero addition surrounding the pass-band and low-pass function insertion in bandpass filters

Full textThis thesis began on October first, 2004, at the LEST (UMR CNRS 6165) within the framework of a co-operation with the university of Los Andes in Colombia, and with the financial support of program ALBAN. Two original ideas are presented in this work. They relate to the reconfigurability in bandwidth and central frequency of one of the strategic elements of telecommunication architectures: the filter. These two ideas relate to the agility, one related with planar technology and the other related with the SIW (Surface Integrated Waveguide) technology. The starting point is that it is difficult to obtain from traditional planar topologies a reconfigurable filter at the same time in central frequency and bandwidth, independently. To avoid these problems, we moved towards a nonconventional topology of filter developed at the LEST, the topology DBR (Dual Behavior Resonator). Our work consisted in proposing an original tuning solution based on the modification of the characteristic impedances of the stubs. The filters final prototype based on planar technologies is always very limited in term of electric performances. The quality factors are weak and make difficult to achieve strong requirements in term of specifications. The increase of the quality factor passes obligatorily by the implementation of new technologies. We thus propose to look in the second part of this thesis, reconfigurable filters based on cavities SIW (Substrate Integrated Waveguide). From this technology we developed a reconfigurable solution in central frequency and bandwidth, which moreover could be used for the applications in high frequency. The term SIW indicates that they are cavities integrated in a substrate. The objective here is to propose with the base of standard substrates, solutions remaining compatible with usual planar technologies and offering better performances thanks to the exploitation of the volume modes of resonances. On the basis of this solution, we thus developed a simple principle allowing to reach the tuning in central frequency and bandwidth

Full textThe main topic of this work is the design of original radiofrequency active filter topologies in Silicon BiCMOS technology. In a first part, the state of the art of the different existing integrated technologies is described. In a second part, we present the design of the two active filters based on recursive principles. The first circuit, non-tunable, uses a differential amplifier in order to achieve signal summation. The second circuit, based on a cellular approach of recursive filters, can be tuned independently in terms of gain, bandwidth and central frequency. In a third part, we propose two original solutions for the realisation of integrated reconfigurable channelized filters. With such topologies, and using low-order filters, excellent performances can be achieved in terms of selectivity thanks to the generation of transmission zeros

Full textThe basic structures of metamaterial nourish a promising alternative technology, which aims to meet new demands of miniaturization and performance of reconfigurable radio systems. The work of this thesis based on the combination of miniature and agile cells, according to excitation conditions in the near-field electromagnetic, and a planar microwave devices to achieve a new structure of filters and reconfigurable antenna systems. After a presentation of the state of the art, on both the concept of metamaterial microwave and models of filters and antennas based on metamaterial, our work then propose four orientations. The first relates to the engineering design and simulation of electromagnetic metamaterial unit cells, and the study of miniaturization and agility of the electrical parameters. The second orientation is devoted to the realization of new models of filters based on loading the microstrip line with metamaterial resonators. Two filter models are developed and validated experimentally. The first concerns a band stop filter based on the combination of a microstrip line and SRR resonator. According to the same model, a band-pass filter based on a microstrip line associated with two cells in two different resonant frequencies is proposed. The second model provides a band stop filter based on a microstrip line loaded with CSRR cells, a study miniaturization of this model was presented and used both geometric and electrical optimization of parameters. The agility techniques studied are based on the loading of the cell by active electronic elements such as PIN and varactor diodes which are inserted in appropriate positions. The obtained results showed an interesting variation of the filter parameters. The third focus of the thesis is to introduce new models of association in the near-field, between UWB monopole antenna and metamaterial. The first model relates a monopole antenna associated with SRR cells printed in the substrate close to the excitation line of the antenna. The theoretical and experimental results confirm the behavior stop band around the cell resonance frequency, and a stable performance of radiation in the rest of the reference antenna bandwidth. For the second model the monopole is loaded by the SRRs CSRRs cells. After optimization of the cells excitation conditions, the simulation results confirm both the stop band behavior around the cell resonance frequency and the stability of the radiation pattern. The latest orientation concerns the realization of two new antenna systems with multi frequency constraints for cognitive radio application. The first system is based on a monopole antenna and tunable SRRs cells. The measurement and simulation results show a UWB behavior with two reconfigurable and controllable filtered bands. The second new systems tempt to reply the antennas systems requirements used in the cognitive radio. All results showed a flexibility of switching from antenna-sensor (ULB) to a communication antenna with tunable and controllable narrow band

In the first step, MIM (Metal-Insulator-Metal) capacitors, interdigitated capacitors and resonators were studied to assess the performance of materials and guide manufacturers to optimize the properties of the intended application. Then, the ferroelectric discrete capacitors were associated with microstrip resonators etched on alumina substrate to create two-pole tunable Bandpass Chebyshev filters of 6. 6 % fractional bandwidths. The filters tune from 380 MHz to 420 MHz (10 %) under a 1. 5 kV/mm electrical field. The insertion loss is -2. 9 dB at zero bias and the return loss was better than 11 dB at 420 MHz

Full textThis work aims at designing infrared optical components based on subwavelengt structures. Two different approaches can be followed. Firstly, I studied an indirect optical characterization method suitable for subwavelength structures considered as homogeneous materials : it consists in measuring the intensities diracted by gratings with periods much larger than the wavelength, the gratings being made of the materials to be characterized. I have implemented this method to determine the complex refractive index of silicon nitride as a validation. Moreover, I have shown that applying this method to articial nanomaterials would allow to characterize their anisotropy and would permit to evidence the spatial dispersion phenomenon speficic of the subwavelength domain, both being very important to understand the optical properties. Secondly, I introduced a matrix formalism to design infrared band-pass filters on substrate. The optical properties of the metal-dielectric subwalength structures considered in that case are due to guided-mode resonances originating from complex interactions between diffracted orders. This formalism allows to model the optical response of these filters ; a symmetry criterion is also formulated. I have finally shown that symmetric Iters on substrate can be designed with an optimal optical response valued with respect to the transmission maximum, the quality factor, the angular tolerance and the rejection

Full textFor satellite communication systems, high performance filters are needed in order to reject unwanted signals in many parts of the communication chain. High quality factor (Q) technologies can meet this requirement, but they often lead to bulky devices. On the other hand, compact technologies are generally low Q and suffer from a degradation of electrical performances in terms of insertion loss, selectivity and flatness. To meet a growing demand concerning size reduction, it is essential to develop compact microwave filters with improved electrical performances. For a receive filter, the challenge is to design a compact bandpass filter with a flat response in the passband and a sharp transition in the passband edges. The insertion loss is not crucial and it can be compensated by the amplifier, leaving a room to the design of a lossy filter. Such a filter accepts additional losses, which can be distributed in the network in order to provide a flat transmission in the passband and a sharp selectivity. In this thesis, new synthesis methods for filtering devices have been studied and developed to improve performances while maintaining a small footprint. These methods have been validated for the design of filters for a receiver in payload satellites as part of collaboration between the Xlim laboratory, the France National Space Centre and Thales Alenia Space

Full textLow cost filters, for integration in satellites, were manufactured using micromachining techniques. In the first chapter, an overview of filters for space communications is presented. Different types of filters, their advantages and disadvantages have been detailed. Emphasis is then placed on the choice of technology and the interest of micro-machining. The method of synthesis of filters is also explained. Filters and resonators at 19,825 GHz and 150 GHz were then designed and made in Chapters 2 and 3 for space applications. At 19 825 GHz, the goal was to design a filter with good electromagnetic performance (including rejection) and whose dimensions are fully compatible with a receiver built by Thales Alenia Space. Around 150 GHz, using micromachining of silicon, electrically coupled planar filters have been studied. A periodic analysis of metallic structures, presenting electromagnetic band gap, has been made. The interest of these structures is to increase the quality factor of resonators. A two-pole filter based on periodic structures could thus be designed. The last chapter of this thesis is devoted to tunable devices. The sub-millimeter field has always been targeted. After a presentation of various technologies for the frequency agreement, the integration of MEMS capacitors in resonant cavities is chosen. Thus a topology with a good quality factor, easy integration and a wide frequency agreement is proposed

Full textThis thesis work consists in designing new topologies in order to substitute the traditional passive filtering circuits by active ones. These tunable solutions increase the performances and reduce the costs. Silicium integrated circuits are developed and realized by an industrial collaboration of RF Innovations Center PHILIPS Semiconductor at CAEN. Based on a bibliographical research of active filtering, four topological axes are selected and developed to lead to four integrated circuit designs, among which two are realized. The first topology is based on the active inductance principle. This design is very advantageous in term of occupied surface and presents an important centre frequency tuning band. This filter was not realized because of its consumption, of its high noise figure and its limited linearity. The second topology is based on the LC filter principle. This realized differential circuit is composed of four coupled resonators based on NMOS transistors in order to constitute the fourth order. The third circuit which has also been realized is a first order LC differential filter. It is composed of an amplifier, an LC resonator, an impedance converter and a negative resistance. This filter has required a very rigorous electromagnetic analysis. Finally, a fourth circuit is presented as a perspective to this thesis work. This LC integrated filter uses a passive transformer made up of three inductances, without any compensating network, which generally degrades the total linearity of the filter

Full textThis thesis focuses on the development of a magnet system for NMR applications with high homogeneity while maintaining the static magnetic field B0 as high as possible (100 ppm, 0.12T). Due to the application goals, the magnet dimensions are predefined as well as those of the region of interest according to the size of the used permanent magnets. Such system is dedicated to biomedical and agroalimentary applications. The goal of this research has been firstly, the discussion of parameters of magnetic materials which are essential to the construction of portable NMR magnets, and then the choice of the permanent magnet material the “NdFeB” that was explained. A compromise between the portability, price and the sensitivity has led to the design of a prototype of portable NMR magnet with a simple system of arrangement of 24 permanent magnets. The magnetic field and the homogeneity of the system were calculated and simulated by using ANSYS software and these results were correlated to those obtained by the Radia software. A new shim method has been used to increase the homogeneity and correct the field B0 imperfection. Based on these results, a prototype was realized. The results of the magnetic field strength and homogeneity obtained by measurements are in good correlation with the results obtained by simulation. Sufficient accuracy was reached to take into account and correct errors due to manufacturing tolerances of the magnets. Another magnet system based on Mandhalas configuration (Magnet Arrangement for Novel Discrete Halbach Layout) was studied. The comparison between two configurations made from circle and square magnets was performed by 2D simulation (using three criteria: mass, homogeneity and the magnetic field strength). The Mandhalas made from circle magnets give better results (0.32 T, 178 ppm). The 3D simulation was carried out to evaluate the total system. From these results, a passive shim system was also used in this case and the homogeneity significantly increases
