Full textThe aim of this work is to extend a specific synthesis method dedicated to the design of microwave integrated active bandpass filters for radar applications (2-20 GHz). Starting from the state of art of active filters which leads us to point out several topologies based on actively coupled passive resonators, we investigate the possibility of designing devices showing frequency tunability and high-order filtering functions. The results of this work lead us to design several prototypes in integrated technology (GaAs substrate) in which the first one achieves 19% of frequency tuning in X-band whereas the second one shows that high order filtering functions can be achieved by the use of a specific passive isolator. Finally, we develop in a last part an original topology that associates filtering, amplification and switching functions so as to design an active filter achieving both frequency tunability and bandwidth multiplexing. Based on a channelized architecture, this circuit operates a frequency selection over the 9-15 GHz bandwidth

Full textThis research work was aimed at designing reconfigurable microwave components for telecommunication systems by using MEMS. Even though this technology has not yet reached its full development, it already provides devices with really good performances. The first step consisted in investigations about reconfigurable filters. We first designed a switchable filter based on classical topology. Then, we used an original topology termed Dual Behavior Resonator (DBR), to independently and simultaneously control the central frequency and the bandwidth of our filter. We developed a tunable DBR filter ans two switchable one. The performances of the last two filters were improved by associating specific filtering functions with them. Finally, we designed a polarisation diversity antenna. Such a device results from the association of a two slot antennas network with a branch-line hybrid coupler. A phase shift at the end of the coupler allows switching the right and left polarisations

Full textThis thesis work discusses the design, manufacture, testing and optimization of a two-pole tunable band-pass filter, integrating new ferroelectric materials developed for a project of the National Agency for Research, ACOR2. In the first step, MIM (Metal-Insulator-Metal) capacitors, interdigitated capacitors and resonators were studied to assess the performance of materials and guide manufacturers to optimize the properties of the intended application. Then, the ferroelectric discrete capacitors were associated with microstrip resonators etched on alumina substrate to create two-pole tunable Bandpass Chebyshev filters of 6. 6 % fractional bandwidths. The filters tune from 380 MHz to 420 MHz (10 %) under a 1. 5 kV/mm electrical field. The insertion loss is -2. 9 dB at zero bias and the return loss was better than 11 dB at 420 MHz

Full textThe design of microwave bandpass filter generally requires optimization or fine-tuning of the physical design parameters in order to meet the electrical specifications given by a frequency template. In this thesis we develop models to assist the designer in the time-efficient physical design of the distributed element microwave filters. The aim is to incorporate these models in different CAD methods. By a time-efficient design, we mean a design that requires a low number of EM simulations. The EM-simulations typically represent the most time-consuming step during the optimization process. We propose different modeling approaches for the frequency response behavior of the filter. The first approach models the coupling matrix as a function of the physical design parameters and the second approach models the scattering parameters, again as a function of the physical parameters. In the first part we focus on the extraction of the coupling matrix. We introduce a novel CAT technique based on an efficient estimation of the Jacobian of the function relating the design parameters to the coupling parameters. The estimation of the Jacobian uses adjoint sensitivity analysis, which drastically reduces the number of required EM-simulations. In the second part of the thesis we propose an alternative modeling approach which is based on the concept of a metamodel. The idea is that the metamodel is numerically much cheaper to evaluate than the original simulation model while keeping an acceptable accuracy. We apply these methods to several state of-the-art microstrip bandpass filters

Full textThe researches described in this manuscript are dealing with the design and the fabrication of microwave devices based on the reversible semi-conductor to metal transition in a “smart” material: the vanadium dioxide, VO2. This transition can be triggered in different ways : thermally, electrically or optically. In a first step, the high modification of material’s electrical properties induced by temperature or by electrical current is exploited (change of three or four order of magnitude in resistivity) to realize microwave switches in coplanar waveguide configuration and secondly to prove the capabilities of some more complex devices like self resetable power limiters and tunable band stop filters. The fabricated circuits exhibit interesting characteristics, particularly concerning their electrical properties in the RF/ microwave domain (they can operate on a large frequency band with a high isolation). The aim of this work is to propose an interesting alternative solution to the others classical technologies (semi-conductors and RF MEMS devices) used in the fabrication of microwave devices

Full textThis work concerns the conception of microwaves filtering functions at the same time band-pass, MMIC technology compliant, tunable and differential. The main objective is to realize filtering structures compatible with opportunist radio. The second objective is to demonstrate that ferromagnetics inductors improves the performance of such devices. Commersialised RF receivers are deadlocked due to their topologies and used components (SAW filter, LNA for example). We put forward new integrated circuits : filtering LNA and 1, 2 and 3 poles filters usable in fully frequency tunable receivers. These circuits are Q-enhanced resonator based. They have a continuous frequency and bandwidth tunability over an octave. The observed results at first for filtering LNA mixe wide tunablility, gain and low noise figure on a unique MMIC circuit. This contribution is a first step toward opportunists receivers

Full textThe work presented in this manuscript concerns the development of methods and tools dedicated to the design of complex microwave filtering devices. The design of telecommunication satellite multiplexing systems requires a rigorous and fast modeling of each of its components. In this framework, a dynamic inverter model is developed, which makes possible to replace the global electromagnetic modeling of each channel, by associating the circuit model of the filter with a simplified electromagnetic model. In a second time, a methodology is developped for the design of filters realising symetrical and assymmetrical transfer functions with two pass bands. This method is associated to an approximate synthesis technique, which allows to simplify the filter realization. These works done in collaboration with the company Alcatel Space has been validated by the realization of experimental models

Full textThe work presented in this manuscript aims to develop a library of structural optimization techniques for advanced computer aided design (CAD) of microwave components and circuits. Structural optimization techniques allow establishing a solution for a given electromagnetic (EM) problem optimizing the shape and the topology of microwave devices (the metal distribution (2D) on a substrate or the dielectric material distribution in 3D) according to electric specifications. In the framework of this thesis, different local and global structural optimization techniques are combined into a library for the design of microwave devices. These techniques are applicable to a variety of microwave components and circuits in order to attain an optimized performance compared to a conventional method. The novelty of this library is to combine several techniques for optimizing the structure dimensions, its shape and/or its topology. The elaborated library is applied to the design of microwave filters for telecommunication satellites

Full textA revue of the different methods for the online benzene detection has been achieved. The non-dispersive and far-infrared spectroscopic project aims at the detection of benzene below the 5 μg∙m-3 threshold within a few seconds. V-antenna coupled bolometers have been chosen as detectors. Due to the low selective performance of V-antennae, bolometric devices required high-Q filters. Thin-film (t < 3 μm) coplanar 1D photonic bandgap filters appeared to be good candidates due to their performance (Q > 1607 in lossless case) and their integration into the bolometer coupling. Results of experimental characterisations and analytical studies at 40 GHz demonstrate that the quality factors of such thin-film filters are very low (Q = 70, S21 = -33 dB, S11 = -0,7 dB at the 40-GHz resonant frequency) because of the conductor losses, defined by the resistance per meter R in the range of 150 Ω∙m-1. Furthermore the calculated losses and field penetration into the conductors always remain challenges for 3D numerical software, when the conductor thickness (t) is equal to or near to the skin depth (δ). That is why a simulation procedure and the T-matrix method are employed in order to simulate and to calculate responses of other more selective filters. The full transmission-line lossy model was also performed. Thus, effects, due to geometric discontinuities associated to characteristic impedance jumps in the PGB filters, are been better estimated. Results help to better understand links between losses and Q in such structures. Such estimations suggest new futures filters adapted to far infrared domain

Full textMicrofluidics is a relatively new field, it really appeared in the early 90s. But this area has experienced strong growth and has reached maturity that allows it to intervene in a wide range of applications, chemical, biological, genomic, optical. . . This growth was made possible by the development of specific technology and particularly technologies by polymers. The thesis presented here is therefore based on the technological expertise of the laboratory in microfabrication to achieve a coupling between microfluidics and microwave and thus expand even further its range of application. One of the current challenges for emission-reception circuitry is reconfigurable miniaturization of passive components. Tunable filters by means microfluidics have been studied to characterize the design, through manufacturing an important work. This is based on the technique of laminating dry film SU-8 and helped integrate microfluidic channels for substrates microstrip filters. Circulation of distilled water showed very good results in terms of shifts in the center frequency. Other lines of liquid-interactions microwaves are also presented using filters such as a sensor element as chemical or biological

Full textEmissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment. In response to the potential risk posed by these compounds, standards for air quality have been defined but their application requires the implementation of efficient gas sensors capable of detecting VOCs in real time. In this context, a micro sensor using non-dispersive absorption spectroscopy in the THz range has been under study for about a decade in the Electronics unit of GREYC. It consists of a V-antenna, a Photonic Band Gap (PBG) selective filter and a micro bolometer. This thesis has created the opportunity to design a first working prototype operating at a frequency below that within the THz range and with the goal of resolving the constraints due to losses. Its specification has resulted in the design of a micro sensor for real-time detection ( ) of a line of Carbon monoxide (CO) at 115. 3 GHz with a concentration of at least = 10 (official standard) and a quality factor of at least. The results of this thesis are very successful because they lead to the design of a simulated micro sensor with a center frequency close to 115. 3 GHz, a quality factor and an acquisition time, including losses, of. The potential of this prototype is analyzed at the end of the manuscript and improvements concerning implementation in the THz domain are proposed

Full textThe research work presented in this memory relates to the realization of innovating microwave filtering devices from thin layer superconductors or ferroelectrics for space applications. The high-temperature superconductor planar technology makes it possible to obtain at the same time compact circuits and excellent electric performances. C-band eight-pole self-equalized quasi-elliptic filters for an input multiplexer (IMUX) have been designed. Moreover, a Ka-band preselect filter has been studied. We have also searched to tune the superconductive filters after their manufacture using ferroelectric materials. An electromagnetic method has been developed to characterize BST deposits on adapted substrates. The goal was to realize reconfigurable or tunable devices

Full textThis PhD work was aimed at studying ultra-compact microwave multiplexer, in stripline technology, for military applications. The miniaturization and cost reductions are the main motivations to try to find alternative solutions to classical technologies o multiplexing systems (waveguides technology). The system in concern divides the 2-18GHz band into 16 1GHz-band-channels. The critical parameters are the whole architecture of the multiplexer, the topologies of different filters used and connection of the 16 channels to a common port. We propose here an interesting frequency splitting that implies a particular architecture which is composed of a Wilkinson type power divider, two wide-hand diplexers and four 4-channels-multiplexers (2 in highfrequency range and 2 in low-frequency range). Diplexers use a the new “arrow” topology of which the synthesis is described whereas the FTP quadriplexers use the well-known DBR topology, developed in the Lab STICC. The LF quadriplexers are based on different wide-band topologies (SC stubs, OC stubs, interdigital etc. ). Some tools have been developed to simplify and shorten the design flow of microwave complex devices such as planar multiplexers. New libraries of discontinuities have been created and a lot of simulations and some realizations have proved the acuity of the different libraries of discontinuities and validated the proposed solution. The global footprint of the whole multiplexer has been divided by at least 10 compared to classical waveguide solutions. Preliminary electrical performances are encouraging and, thanks to this PhD study, the feasibility of a planar wide-band channelizing receiver for electronic warfare systems is proved

The last part presents designs of different filter topologies based on coupled dielectric resonators. The first topology is composed by BMT resonators associated with silver plating cavity. The second topology is entirely make up in zircon ceramic which bring cavity, resonator, waveguide fixing

Full textAccording to their level of selectivity, while designing narrow bandpass filters, we faced up to difficulties due to design control in keeping with models accuracy on the one hand, and on the other hand, with important insertion losses levels of such devices. Within this context, a design method was implemented using both circuit and electromagnetic simulations. Such a method is based on DOE (Design Of Experiment) statistical sensitivity studies, which allow one to establish the a priori knowledge of the filter electrical characteristic behaviour. Hence, one can correct the filter dimensions as efficiently as possible. Several filter topologies were presented (coupled-lines filters, interdigital filters and DBR filters) that were developed following on the proposed design method. Once the method efficacy had been proved in centimetric domain, in terms of design control as well as electrical performances improvement, it was transposed in millimetric frequency range. Hence, two technological paths developed at the IEMN laboratory were used: III-V path for coplanar technology development and Si-BCB path for devices in microstrip technology. Finally, the design method efficacy allowed one to develop novel topologies, more complex, so as to improve the filter out-of-band electrical characteristics. Two solutions were studied: transmission zero addition surrounding the pass-band and low-pass function insertion in bandpass filters

Full textThis thesis began on October first, 2004, at the LEST (UMR CNRS 6165) within the framework of a co-operation with the university of Los Andes in Colombia, and with the financial support of program ALBAN. Two original ideas are presented in this work. They relate to the reconfigurability in bandwidth and central frequency of one of the strategic elements of telecommunication architectures: the filter. These two ideas relate to the agility, one related with planar technology and the other related with the SIW (Surface Integrated Waveguide) technology. The starting point is that it is difficult to obtain from traditional planar topologies a reconfigurable filter at the same time in central frequency and bandwidth, independently. To avoid these problems, we moved towards a nonconventional topology of filter developed at the LEST, the topology DBR (Dual Behavior Resonator). Our work consisted in proposing an original tuning solution based on the modification of the characteristic impedances of the stubs. The filters final prototype based on planar technologies is always very limited in term of electric performances. The quality factors are weak and make difficult to achieve strong requirements in term of specifications. The increase of the quality factor passes obligatorily by the implementation of new technologies. We thus propose to look in the second part of this thesis, reconfigurable filters based on cavities SIW (Substrate Integrated Waveguide). From this technology we developed a reconfigurable solution in central frequency and bandwidth, which moreover could be used for the applications in high frequency. The term SIW indicates that they are cavities integrated in a substrate. The objective here is to propose with the base of standard substrates, solutions remaining compatible with usual planar technologies and offering better performances thanks to the exploitation of the volume modes of resonances. On the basis of this solution, we thus developed a simple principle allowing to reach the tuning in central frequency and bandwidth

Theoretical approaches of several recursive-transversal and channelized-transversal topologies are presented in the first part. In order to synthesise the transfer function, some structure's parameters are analytically calculated. Then, a noise optimisation of the structure is performed at a chosen frequency point. In the second part, we present the conception of recursive and transversal filter structures in hybrid and monolithic technologies. This monolithic circuit validates the theoretical approach in terms of function transfer and noise optimisation. However, due to the high sensitivity of recursive and transversal structures, increased by narrow rejection band width, specifications are not achieved. The last part presents a fully active recursive and transversal filter concept. The goal is to improve two important parameters : chip size in monolithic technology and transfer function performances

Full textThe first objective of this study deals with the analysis and optimisation of noise performances of different topologies of multipole active ring-resonator filters. The second objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of these filters in planar technology. Finally, a comparison between two technologies (microstrip and coplanar) is realised to know which one is most adequate for the design of active planar ring-resonator filter

Full textIn the payload of a telecommunication satellite, the filtering function occurs at several levels. For simplifying the architecture and improving the overall system performance, multiplexed filters could be replaced by multi-band filters, thus reducing design costs. In this manuscript, we are particularly interested in high frequency filters. The first objective of this manuscript is to propose a synthesis of dual-band high frequency filters. The objective is to find the optimal topology which presents a minimum insertion loss in the passband. By making measurements at atmospheric pressure of output multiplexers (OMUX) integrated in satellite payloads, a breakdown phenomenon can appear in an unintended and undesirable manner. The second objective of this manuscript is to propose a multiphysics numerical modeling of the breakdown phenomenon based on electromagnetism, thermal and plasma physics laws
