Full textSelenium is an essential micronutrient for most of living organisms. However, toxic effects in several ecosystems have been reported in the literature. Toxicity comprehension is difficult due to the complexity of Se oxidation states in the environment. The aim of this thesis work was to acquire knowledge on the physiological and environmental factors involved in bioaccumulation and toxicity processes in the freshwater filter-feeding bivalve C. Fluminea. The aims were : i) to define what the factors involved in Se bioaccumulation processes in the bivalve are, ii) to characterize Se bioaccumulation at different biological organisation levels, iii) to investigate Se toxic effects. First experiments, carried out for short term exposure duration (3 days), have permitted to underline the importance of Se chemical speciation in bioaccumulation processes in C. Fluminea. It has been shown that the organic form, selenomethionine, was much more bioavailable than the inorganic forms, selenite and selenate. Moreover, the route of transfer was determinant in thoses processes. Inorganic forms have been better extracted by trophic route, whereas selenomethionine has been better extracted by the direct route. In our experimental conditions, ventilation of the bivalve has not been a limitant factor for Se bioaccumulation by the direct route, whereas it has been for bioaccumulation by the trophic route. Ventilation has been largely modified by the presence of dissolved selenite and selenomethionine. We have shown that the kinetics of selenomethionine bioaccumulation are much more fast than those of selenite. Moreover, when introduced as SeMet, internalised Se appeared to be relatively remanent in soft tissues of C. Fluminea in comparison with Se internalised when introduced as selenite. Subcellular and molecular distributions of these forms were very different. Finally, it has been shown that selenomethionine and selenite could generate weak alterations of the anti-oxidant status and the genetic expression in C. Fluminea. On the other hand, important ultrastructural modifications of gill tissues have been observed after selenite and selenomethionine exposure

Full textThe basic mechanisms that allow Asiatic clams Corbicula fluminea to maintain their O₂ consumption, food uptake and O₂ partial pressure in their milieu intérieur were studied in steady-states. Based on these findings, the nature of the relationships between water oxygenation levels, plankton concentration and metal (Cd) accumulation kinetics was demonstrated for the first time. At high enough concentrations of plankton, maintenance of O₂ consumption was achieved exclusively by ventilatory adjustments with no change in blood flow rate and O₂ status in the milieu intérieur. The existence of a ventilatory drive, associated to food supply, was also demonstrated at 15 and 25°C. We shown that at constant Cd contamination level (2 μg. L⁻¹), these physiological mechanisms of adaptation deeply modified accumulation rates of metal. Importantly, in all studied situations, ventilatory adjustments were playing a key role. In addition, we developed a new designed valve movements sensor based on the use of non-invasive weightless impedance electrodes in free-ranging C. Fluminea. By taking into account the spontaneous rhythm of valve closures (equivalent to a background noise) and integrating response time constants in small populations, it allowed us to improve by a factor 6 the cadmium threshold sensitivity by comparison to literature data

Full textThe hyper-anthropization, particularly along our coasts, has profoundly modified the environment. New structures, such as harbors, emerging, forming “true” ecosystems. Among the multitude of species inhabiting the port, one group seems particularly interesting to study: the filter feeders (bivalves and tunicat). These organisms have a strong interaction with the port environment due to their behaviour. Indeed, by remaining anchored to the structures, they are constantly subjected to the environmental factors that characterize the port and their feeding behavior, the filtration, leads them to be in contact with a large quantity of water and therefore with the elements that are in it. The objective of this thesis is to study this particular socio-ecosystem that is the port environment through this key group: the filter feeders. Through a multidisciplinary approach, this work, has allowed :-to study and map the communities of filter feeders present in the marina of La Rochelle; showing the complexity of their community and the fact that they are impacted by anthropogenic and hydrosedimentary factors.-to analyze the effect of two common contaminants in the port environment, copper and zinc, on the metabolism of a model filter-feeder organism : the scallop (Mimachlamys varia); and to show that they impacted several metabolic pathways involved in numerous biological functions, such as osmoregulation, oxidative stress, energetic metabolism, reproduction and apoptosis.- to highlight the fact that filter feeders are involved in the composition of the mud by remobilizing the sediments present in the water column and by modifying their physico-chemical properties; and that is species dependent and is strongly modulated by environmental conditions such as the level of organic matter.- to develop several innovative sampling and analysis methods needed to understand this particular environment

Full textThis work deals with the study of active transversal microwave stop band filters. Theoretical approaches of several recursive-transversal and channelized-transversal topologies are presented in the first part. In order to synthesise the transfer function, some structure's parameters are analytically calculated. Then, a noise optimisation of the structure is performed at a chosen frequency point. In the second part, we present the conception of recursive and transversal filter structures in hybrid and monolithic technologies. This monolithic circuit validates the theoretical approach in terms of function transfer and noise optimisation. However, due to the high sensitivity of recursive and transversal structures, increased by narrow rejection band width, specifications are not achieved. The last part presents a fully active recursive and transversal filter concept. The goal is to improve two important parameters : chip size in monolithic technology and transfer function performances

Full textThe threat of a worldwide pandemic (like H1N1) leads occidental societies to develop protections against infectious microorganisms. Defenses against microorganisms can be organized around some solutions. Apart from vaccination or other prophylaxis, individual or collective protections consist in the filtration of the air in order to remove infectious particles. The aim of this thesis consisted of working out a textile structure capable of biocidal properties. First, textile has been functionalized by cyclodextrin. Cyclodextrins are host molecules which have the capability to make inclusions (or host–guest) complexes with a wide range of molecules. Parameters of the curing were improved in order to minimize the textile structure spoiling. Biological tests have proved the good cytocompatibility of the modified textile. Then textiles have been activated with biocidal molecules. Kinetics of release have shown that biocides were durably fixed on the textile and microbiological tests have demonstrated their bioavailability through a striking reduction of the bacterial adhesion. Finally, this study was completed by mechanical and filtration tests which have revealed that fibers modification did not disturb filtration properties of textile. Finally, we succeeded in offering biocidal properties to a textile structure without affecting its filtration performances

Full textThis thesis report deals with the development of a methodology for the design of bandpass filters including dispersive coupling to optimize the selectivity of these filters by generating and controlling the position of additional transmission zeros. A state of the art on the different approaches proposed in the literature for the synthesis of microwave filters with dispersive coupling is first proposed. This analysis is illustrated by several concrete examples, and a structure in particular, comprising a coupling capacitive post, is the starting point of the work. New dispersive coupling elements were then proposed, capable of generating both positive and negative couplings, thus enabling the transmission zeros to be positioned in the upper or lower stopped band. These elements have then been integrated in more complex filtering structures to achieve, for example, on-line structures having several out-of-band transmission zeros or multiband filters with enhanced selectivity. Many of the devices designed have been manufactured and measured. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulations validating the proposed approach

Full textChildren learn both through quiet play and play in movement. It is therefore important that children get space for both types of plays on preschool. In the quiet game, there is more focus on the individual, the independent creation and development. While in the mobile game, there are more focus on group coo- peration and interaction between the children. I think that these kind of plays are opposites and that the environments, adapted to each game should also stand in contrast to each other. How do you design an environment for the quiet game? How do you design an environment for the mobile game? In the quiet game, childrenare mostly dedicated in activities that require concentration and as little outside interference as possible. It may include painting, play with clay or reading. Here, the child develops mainly their own abilities and training as to be independent. Therefore it is important that the rooms are designed as simple and distinct as possible. Not too much material nor for windows where children can be disturbed by what is happening outside. It is also important that the environ- ment feels warm, peaceful and safe. In the mobile play, the child learns by using its body in various ways, for example by running, jumping, crawling and walking. There is also space for the child to learn to cooperate and take care of each other as the mobile play is usually done in groups. A room for movement games should encourage the child to move. It should be a dynamic environment that inspires and creates new impressions. The room should also enable the child to use their body in different ways. I have wanted to create a preschool that clearly defines the room for the quiet game, and the moving game. A place where the child can develop at the individual level by its own ability and maturity, but also be given space to interact and learn from other children. These thoughts have resulted in a building that consists of a common stairwell used as a room for the moving game. The stairway moves circularly around an internal volume of three different planes. Inside the volume, the three depart- ments are placed, where the youngest children are at the bottom and the oldest at the top. The idea is that the rooms for the quiet game takes place here.

Full textThe emergence of applications in millimetre- and sub-millimetre-frequency range led to a significant increase in the number of users of the frequency spectrum and, therefore, in the constraints on the devices performances in terms of losses, bandwidth and out-of-band rejection, especially for filters. Since the systems have to meet for several standards requirements while reducing costs of production, we are attending to the multiplication for frequency reconfigurable functions. Our studies consist of determining the best technology suited to the implementation of reconfigurable filters in millimetre-wave. The proposed topologies as well as their associated synthesis allow an important frequency excursion while maintaining a good matching level. The relevance of the proposed concepts is illustrated by the realization of a tuneable resonator between W-band (94 GHz) and V-band (60 GHz) using RF MEMS fulfilling the performance and reliability criteria

Full textFor satellite communication systems, high performance filters are needed in order to reject unwanted signals in many parts of the communication chain. High quality factor (Q) technologies can meet this requirement, but they often lead to bulky devices. On the other hand, compact technologies are generally low Q and suffer from a degradation of electrical performances in terms of insertion loss, selectivity and flatness. To meet a growing demand concerning size reduction, it is essential to develop compact microwave filters with improved electrical performances. For a receive filter, the challenge is to design a compact bandpass filter with a flat response in the passband and a sharp transition in the passband edges. The insertion loss is not crucial and it can be compensated by the amplifier, leaving a room to the design of a lossy filter. Such a filter accepts additional losses, which can be distributed in the network in order to provide a flat transmission in the passband and a sharp selectivity. In this thesis, new synthesis methods for filtering devices have been studied and developed to improve performances while maintaining a small footprint. These methods have been validated for the design of filters for a receiver in payload satellites as part of collaboration between the Xlim laboratory, the France National Space Centre and Thales Alenia Space

Full textSeepage beds are widely used for on-site and small communities wastewater treatment. These extensive systems present the advantages of both an easy management and good treatment performances. However, they are sensitive to the physical and biological clogging. Clogging alter the treatment performances but also reduce the service life. The role of materials and conception of filters on the control of the permeability of the filtering bed and regulation of the biomass accumulated remain badly understood. In addition, there is a lack of non-destructive tools in order to perform diagnosis on operating systems. The aim of this thesis is to analyse (at various scales and with different tools, especially non-destructive) the answer of infiltration systems to varying operating conditions that are, namely: (i) the composition of the influent, the seepage bed design (type of sand and its implementation, the presence of a geogrid at the bottom), but also (ii) of the operating parameters (hydraulic load, organic load, and mode of feeding). Results highlight the determining roles (i) of the grain size distribution on hydraulic behaviour and the retention of suspended solids, (ii) and of the feeding mode and organic loads. We estimate the operating state of the systems at different time. We distinguish several non-destructive tools fitted for the diagnosis: the measurement of the gaseous oxygen within soil porosity, the measurement of electrical resistivity. In addition, we determine threshold values that allow to differentiate the different state of the system operation

Full textThe main purpose of this work is to propose the best hybrid filter architectures, the combination of active and passive filters, for harmonics compensation produced by the variable frequency asynchronous drive systems in order to meet the EDF harmonic tolerated limits. Three hybrid filters are designed for the VSI, the CSI and the cycloconverter asynchronous drives. A real coded genetic algorithm is used for all of optimization problems. Its efficiency is illustrated by two applications: the identification of squirrel cage induction motor's parameters and the coefficients of5 pol#ynomials of RST regulator. A new control approach of the current inverter fed asynchronous drive is presented. Also, a new approach for the positive and negative converter selection in a three-pulse cycloconverter in circulating current-free operation mode is presented. It consists of using the d-q components of stator reference current, when the cycloconverter load is a three-phase ac machine, to select the positive and negative converter of each leg of cycloconverter

Full textThis thesis is devoted to edge detection from the raw image acquired by single-sensor cameras. Such cameras are fitted with Bayer Color Filter Array (CFA, generally Bayer one) and deliver raw CFA image, in which each pixel is characterized by only one out of the three colour components (red, green, or blue). A demosaicing procedure is necessary to estimate the other two missing colour components at each pixel, so as to obtain a colour image. This however produces artefacts that may affect the performance of low-level processing tasks applied to such estimated images. We propose to avoid demosaicing to compute partial derivatives for edge detection. Simple differentiation kernels, Deriche filters or shifted Deriche filters can be used either in a vector or a scalar approache. The vector approach computes partial derivatives for the three channels and the scalar approach first estimates a luminance image, then computes derivatives. The partial CFA derivatives are then used to compute Di Zenzo gradient for edge detection. We assess the performance of our methods on a large dataset of synthetic images with available edge ground truth. We show that CFA-based approaches may provide as accurate edge detection results as colour vector-based ones at much reduced computation cost

Full textHyperspectral mosaic filter appears to be the perfect solution to lighten the spectral imagers used in space missions. Such applications require the use of multilayer interference filters. This work aims to find solutions to achieve hyperspectral mosaic filter with interference filters rather than the conventionally used coloured resins. In order to achieve this, a theoretical study on the simplification of multilayer designs was performed. It appears that the stacks are thicker, which makes them difficult to pattern. Several methods of patterning were studied, especially the lift-off technique which is traditionally used and the lift-up. The latter has the advantage to avoid adding the technological risk associated with each filter production. A trade-off between these two techniques was done as well as experimental productions. These were then characterized by a bench developed for this purpose which has experimentally validate the technique used

Full textOur work deals with the quality of colour images provided by a mono-CCD colour camera, which acquires only one colour component at each pixel by means of the CFA (Colour Filter Array) which covers the CCD sensor. A procedure - called demosaicing - is necessary to estimate the other two missing colour components at each pixel, so as to obtain a colour image in this kind of cameras. We aim to determine which method of demosaicing provides the results that are best adapted to colour image analyses for the reconstruction of scene. First, we present the principles on how the mono-CCD cameras acquire digital colour images, as well as the different arrangements of CFA used in such cameras. Once the influence of the CFA arrangement on the performance of demosaicing has been presented, we focus our studies on the demosaicing methods based on the Bayer CFA. A mathematical formalization for demosaicing is proposed before we present the numerous demosaicing methods in the literature, as well as the post-processing algorithms to correct the demosaiced images. We then investigate the evaluation criteria for the quality of the colour images estimated by demosaicing. First are described the different possible artefacts generated by demosaicing and the reasons for their generation, which allow us to point out the limits of the classical measures used to evaluate the estimated images. We then propose two original measures to quantify the presence of the two main artefacts, namely false colour and zipper effect. At last, we present new criteria based on the analysis of features extracted from colour images, by measuring the quality of edge detection in the estimated images

Full textThis PhD dissertation is dedicated to the design and manufacturing of 3D components made out of ceramic material by stereolithography (SLA). This process is able to manufacture complex 3D shapes out of several ceramic materials. These components bring new and innovative filtering solutions to the current ones. The first part contains a bibliographic study about the various filter technologies in high frequency domain. The second part presents in detail the SLA technology which was used in order to realize microwave filters. Metallization and laser machining process have been installed in Xlim Laboratory and applicated on filtering ceramic components. These processes have allowed confining the electromagnetic field inside filter with a copper layer and coplanar accesses by laser engraving. The third part is devoted to BMT ceramic properties. This ceramic powder has shown with a standard characterization method with metallic cavity, we have obtained intrinsic properties stable in function of temperature. The last part presents designs of different filter topologies based on coupled dielectric resonators. The first topology is composed by BMT resonators associated with silver plating cavity. The second topology is entirely make up in zircon ceramic which bring cavity, resonator, waveguide fixing

This study reports a chemical modification consisting of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) deposition on the surface of non-woven cellulosic fiber filters to impart a better antiviral property to the filters. Confocal microscopy and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) were used for the filter characterization. Interactions between T4D bacteriophage virus of Escherichia coli B and PEI were investigated by atomic force microscopy and by QCM-D. A new mask was elaborated and showed a 99,9997% removal of airborne T4 virus. This mask is also effective against a pathogenic virus, A (H5N2). We also showed antibacterial activities of the new filter against Gram + Staphylococcus aureus and Gram − Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Full textThe switching semiconductor devices in static-converters are the main source of electromagnetic interference (EMI). Reduction of these emissions can be achieved by different techniques including the use of EMI filters which design requires the use of magnetic cores. These must have adequate physical properties allowing the EMI filter to fulfill its task within a specified frequency range whatever the operating conditions (saturation, temperature…). Therefore, in the present work, some methodologies and models are developed in order to be able to design the EMI filter within its real conditions of operation. First, the magnetic core is considered in small-signal conditions and a method is proposed to measure the complex magnetic permeability in high frequency (HF). Two models, analytical and lumped-circuit network, are developed to account for the HF characteristics. In a second step, the material is considered saturable as the EMI filter can be subjected to more important currents, leading to the modification of its main characteristics. Then, a non-linear modeling approach, with and without hysteresis effect, including a material capacitance is considered for modeling the magnetic core. Additionally, a technique is proposed to characterize in HF the magnetic hysteresis loop from a single turn flat coil configuration. Finally, an improved current injection method, with new designed current probes, is used to characterize the input impedance of a converter. The impedance, combined with the developed small-signal and high-signal material models, is used to predict the insertion loss of an EMI filter. Simulation results are validated by the experiment
