Abstract:
This book provides detailed information about successful collaborations between universities and public behavioral health organizations in criminal justice contexts. The authors begin by introducing the relevant purpose and definitions and then describe each of the nine contributed chapters to follow. Each of these chapters describes a particular collaboration between a university and a public behavioral health organization. Each chapter is structured around a description of the collaboration’s purposes, beginning, leadership, who is served, services, operations, effectiveness measurement, financial arrangements, and lessons learned. Collaborative projects were selected because they were long-standing and successful. The descriptions provided by each project are then aggregated into a larger model for success. This is detailed in the final chapter with a distillation of “lessons learned” in building, operating, and sustaining a successful collaboration. These lessons are provided in particular areas: planning, working together, training, consultation, financial considerations, personnel, and research. By considering these nine exemplary projects and the final “lessons learned,” this book has implications for comparable collaborations between universities and public behavioral health organizations in a criminal justice context.

This chapter concerns Beethoven's Piano Trio in F Minor, which would have become one of Beethoven's major chamber works had it been completed. It first examines the sketches in Beethoven's large-format sketchbook from the years 1815 and 1816, referred to here as the “Scheide Sketchbook” after the library of William Scheide at Princeton, New Jersey, where it is held. The chapter then places these sketches into relationship with the most central document for the trio—the extended draft for the first movement, presented here in facsimile and transcription sound recording at the University of Illinois Press website. The final sections of the chapter assess the place of this major unfinished project in Beethoven's creative development and its affinities with his other, familiar works in this distinctive key.

Abstract:
Seamless in approach and rigour of method and seated very much in the post-modern present, this book spans a wide spectrum of historical periods, cultures, religions, regions and politics. This is a reflection of the author’s search for a theory of vernacular pluralism suitable for Indian society and modernity. The book has three sections. The first engages with the question of swaraj or independent nationalism versus internationalism in the context of knowledge, programmes of research and the university as a social institution. The essays are written to represent the author’s viewpoint on the political conflict between imperialism and nationalism as it relates to the academic pursuit of knowledge in the university and the profession. The second group of essays comprises selected critical reflections on aspects of the modern Western world, academic, theoretical and practical, all here considered as inherently social, but remaining unexamined in our everyday life and practice. They begin with questions of social science and philosophy and conclude with a discussion on the working lives of the industrial worker (West) and the ecological household farmer (East). The third group of essays explores the original project of a vernacular Indian modernity in relation to the Hindu and Muslim cultures of medieval India and in the context of Sikhism as an example of Indian modernity. The thrust of this final section is to establish the ground for a concept of society in the vernacular usage, labour and language, rather than in the concept of ‘tradition’ as general social science and the Orientalist classicists have hitherto done.
