Here we present a 3D hydrodynamical simulation of a convection zone and adjacent radiative zone, including both thermal and compositional buoyancy forces. The welded joint (SA213 T23-TP347H) of the superheater tube, after approximately 105,000 hours of service, was sampled for creep life assessment and maintenance planning. This resulted in a thru-wall fracture opening up and propagating 180° around the nozzle-to-shell weld on the vessel outside diameter (OD) in only a matter of hours.
