As expected, regions that are unstable according to the Ledoux criterion are convective. Initially, the radiative zone adjacent to the convection zone is Schwarzschild unstable but Ledoux stable due to a composition gradient. Over many convective overturn timescales, the

Abstract The supercontainer (SC) is the current reference concept for the geological disposal of vitrified high-level nuclear waste and spent fuel in Belgium. It comprises a prefabricated concrete buffer that completely surrounds a carbon steel overpack. Welding is being considered as the final closure technique of the carbon steel overpack in order to ensure its water tightness. Welding is known to induce residual stresses in the weld zone and its vicinity, which may lead to an increased susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In this study, slow strain rate tests were conducted to

Abstract With increasing oil & gas demand and depletion of sweet reserves, oil & gas companies in the regional economies are focusing towards the exploitation of sour resources. This necessitates the use of pipelines and down-hole tubing made from special steels with significant resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). These steels are produced through specific technologies for enhanced chemical composition control and microstructural engineering to incorporate the required strength, weld ability and improved HIC resistance. It is well established that the HIC initiates at sites

Abstract:
The rehabilitation of WISMUT’s former Ronneburg uranium mining site involves backfilling of waste rock to the Lichtenberg open pit. The relocation project comprises about 110 million m3 of sulphide-bearing and AMD-generating waste rock which makes it the most important and most cost-intensive single surface restoration project conducted by WISMUT at the Ronneburg site. The backfilled waste rock has to be covered on an area of about 220 ha to control water infiltration and gas diffusion. Design planning for the final cover placement which began in 2004 had to be based on a comprehensive cost-be

Abstract:
We have fabricated a free-standing transmission Fresnel zone plate for the focusing of long-thermal-wavelength neutral atoms. The zone plate was fabricated from a 0.7μm thick boron-doped silicon membrane. The pattern was formed by means of electron-beam lithography, and the final grating was generated by reactive ion etching. The zone plate is composed of 100 zones, the diameter of the outermost zone is approximately 80 μm. The zone plate is designed to focus incident atoms having a thermal wavelength of 17 Å into a 2000 Å spot at a focal length of about 1 cm. A maximum of 8% of the incident f
