The article connects two streams of recent research on the financial sector. The first is the regulation literature, which emphasises the central role of incentives in the financial sector. It points out that the challenge of financial sector regulation, highlighted by the global financial crisis, is to align private incentives with public interest without taxing or subsidising private risk-taking. The second stream of research relates to financial structures and examines the mix of financial institutions and financial markets in an economy. It finds that, as economies develop, services provid

Data growth in today’s world is exponential, many applications generate huge amount of data streams at very high speed such as smart grids, sensor networks, video surveillance, financial systems, medical science data, web click streams, network data, etc. In the case of traditional data mining, the data set is generally static in nature and available many times for processing and analysis. However, data stream mining has to satisfy constraints related to real-time response, bounded and limited memory, single-pass, and concept-drift detection. Methods: A 24-hour baseline audit of waste streams was conducted on a ward, categorizing waste into dry recycling, domestic, tiger-striped offensive, and clinical waste. Moreover, a novel metric distance function is introduced which more agrees with human perceptions of pattern similarity. During the process, our system presents a pattern matching algorit

In this paper we investigate the potential of the analysis of noisy non-stationary time series by quantizing it into streams of discrete symbols and applying finite-memory symbolic predictors. The main argument is that careful quantization can reduce the noise in the time series to make model estimation more amenable given limited numbers of samples that can be drawn due to the non-stationarity in the time series. As a main application area we study the use of such an analysis in a realistic setting involving financial forecasting and trading. In particular, using historical data, we simulate

The complexity and duration of the financial crisis has led many banks and authorities to question the adequacy of stress testing practices prior to the crisis and their efficiency to cope with rapidly changing circumstances. Majority of models make assumptions that do not hold in abnormal markets. Therefore, stress tests are vital for a comprehensive picture of risk. In this thesis we

Abstract:
Deepwater natural gas production is a non-traditional operation that is very different than conventional shelf or onshore production, due to the extremely high pressures (2,000 psia, 13.8 MPa abs) and rich gases (1,300 Btu/scf, 48.4 MJ/Nm3) involved. Concerns have been raised about methods used to sample deepwater natural gas supplies in this supercritical state. Sampling methods accepted for natural gas at pipeline conditions have been used to sample gas from offshore platforms and supercritical onshore storage facilities. However, the sample analyses have later been found to overestimate the
