The block structure is a significant local feature of matrices: entities in the same block have similar values, which implies that links are more likely to be found within dense blocks. We use this insight to give a probabilistic latent variable model for finding missing links by convex nonnegative matrix factorization with block detection. AbstractOptimizing flow field structure can effectively improve the performance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). Adding the block in the flow channel is one of the approaches. In this work, the enhanced transport characteristic of the block is re-examined, and its effect on the performance of the fuel cell scale-up is further revealed. The models of single-channel fuel cells with different lengths L and blockage ratio β are developed. Results show that the best cell performance exhibits when β = 100% due to the combined effect of the block and upstream zone. The convection appears below the block, and higher upstream pressure is induced, both of which increase the oxygen concentration at the catalyst layer. Besides, results indicate that the performance of the scaled-up fuel cell with blockage increases at a slower rate. Combined with the pump power, it is found that the addition of the block with β = 100% is indeed beneficial for the fuel cell scale-up. The findings of different blockage effects on different-sized cells provide guidelines for the flow field design.

Abstract:
Abstract Using the universal grammar of reading and the system accommodation hypothesis (Perfetti, 2003) as theoretical frameworks, this chapter reviews a wide range of linguistic evidence that supports script relativity. Universality and specificity found according to script features are discussed with respect to the operating principle (alphabet vs. logography), psycholinguistic gran size (phoneme vs. syllable), graph configuration (linearity vs. block), symbolic representation (arbitrariness vs. iconic quality), graph complexity (traditional characters vs. simplified characters), and multi-script representation (phonogram Kana vs. Ideogram Kanji). Linguistic skills associated with reading in terms of orthography, phonology, morphology as well as cross-linguistic and cross-scriptal transfer are reviewed. Next, based on the reviewed literature, each criterion for causality from script to cognition through reading as a multifaceted cognitive activity is checked. Although the existing literature did not aim to directly test script relativity, research findings collectively suggest script effects on readers’ thought and cognition.

Abstract:
AbstractWater management is an important aspect for hydrological restoration in the tropical peatland because the availability of water is not evenly distributed in the dry and rainy seasons. The aim of this study was to conduct action research focusing on water management for integrated peatland restoration at Pulau Tebing Tinggi Peatland Hydrological Unit (PHU), Riau, Indonesia. The actions were to implement some research results and findings by developing demo-plots for a pilot project and analyzing their impact. The pilot project for water management was developed at Pulau Tebing Tinggi PHU not only for the purpose of peat rewetting, but also to support revegetation efforts and revitalization of livelihood. Pulau Tebing Tinggi PHU, located in Kepulauan Meranti Regency, Riau Province, is susceptible to peat fires. In 2014, big peat fires occurred in Pulau Tebing Tinggi PHU and several peatland areas in Riau, causing a haze disaster that lasted for about 2 months. The disaster produced a sickening and deadly cloud of smoky pollution that not only threatened Indonesia but also neighboring countries. The Thornthwaite-Mather water balance (TMWB) model was applied for water balance analysis as a basis for water management in the research site. A masterplan for water management was developed which was integrated with revegetation and revitalization of livelihood approaches. Canal block constructions, paludiculture, and aquaculture were the integrated activities carried out to support peatland restoration. Two types of canal blocks, whose main materials were wood and vinyl sheet pile, were introduced in this pilot project. Four key parameters of peatland restoration progress were monitored periodically, namely water table, land subsidence, CO2 emissions, and vegetation growth. This research found that by applying water management properly, the water table can be maintained at a stable and high level in wet peatlands. Water management by applying canal blocking has a good impact for keeping groundwater elevation and keeping peatland in a wet condition for a distance of 400 m upstream from the canal block.

Abstract:
AbstractIn our modern digital society, cryptography is vital to protect the secrecy and integrity of transmitted and stored information. Settings like digital commerce, electronic banking, or simply private email communication already rely on encryption and signature schemes. However, today’s cryptographic schemes do not scale well, and thus are not suited for the increasingly large sets of data they are used on. For instance, the security guarantees currently known for RSA encryption—one of the most commonly used type of public-key encryption scheme—degrade linearly in the number of users and ciphertexts. Hence, larger settings (such as cloud computing, or simply the scenario of encrypting all existing email traffic) may enable new and more efficient attacks. To maintain a reasonable level of security in larger scenarios, RSA keylengths must be chosen significantly larger, and the scheme becomes very inefficient. Besides, a switch in RSA keylengths requires an update of the whole public key infrastructure, an impossibility in truly large scenarios. Even worse, when the scenario grows beyond an initially anticipated size, we may lose all security guarantees. This problematic is the motivation for our project “Scalable Cryptography”, which aims at offering a toolbox of cryptographic schemes that are suitable for huge sets of data. In this overview, we summarize the approach, and the main findings of our project. We give a number of settings in which it is possible to indeed provide scalable cryptographic building blocks. For instance, we survey our work on the construction of scalable public-key encryption schemes (a central cryptographic building block that helps secure communication), but also briefly mention other settings such as “reconfigurable cryptography”. We also provide first results on scalable quantum-resistant cryptography, i.e., scalable cryptographic schemes that remain secure even in the presence of a quantum computer.

ZusammenfassungÖffentliche Diskurse finden zunehmend in digitalen Medien statt.

Helicopter load monitoring and other health and usage monitoring system applications regularly involve large datasets and machine learning models. The amount of effort that could be devoted to training an optimal solution could be unlimited and quickly becomes prohibitive. However, there are important analyses and tools that could be implemented upfront to expedite finding well performing models as well as providing insight into the black-box machine learning models. In this work, we explore the use of the Gamma test and feature selection techniques to optimize input parameter sets and reduce

Abstract HVOF sprayed tungsten carbide (WC) thermal spray coatings are finding increasing acceptance for replacement of electroplated chromium on aircraft landing gear parts. In order to replace chrome plating by an HVOF WC coating, the latter should exhibit wear and fatigue characteristics at least as good as those of chrome plating. Sliding wear performance and fatigue life of tungsten carbide coated parts depend on morphology and phase composition of the coating which in turn depend on spray parameters such as powder characteristics, powder feed rate, gas flow rates, and spray distance. ABSTRACT: The main classification systems that estimate rock mass properties include variants of the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) System, Rock Quality Designation (RQD), the Norwegian Tunneling Index (Q) (Barton), and the Geological Strength Index (GSI). The RMR system is based on intact strength, Rock quality designation, fracture frequency, and discontinuity condition. Typical distributions for these parameters may be approximated by normal, lognormal, or Weibull distributions and discrete distributions for fracture conditions. Quantum clustering (QC), is a data clustering algorithm based on quantum mechanics which is accomplished by substituting each point in a given dataset with a Gaussian. The width of the Gaussian is a 𝜎 value, a hyper-parameter which can be manually defined and manipulated to suit the application. Numerical methods are used to find all the minima of the quantum potential as they correspond to cluster centers. Herein, we investigate the mathematical task of expressing and finding all the roots of the exponential polynomial corresponding to the minima of a two-dimensional quantum potential. This i

An experimental study was conducted to demonstrate the existence and estimate the value of an optimum number density of silicon plates (blocks) in a fluidic self-assembly process used for parallel assembling of microelectronics. Blocks ranging in size from 350 to 1050 microns were released under water over an inclined substrate and allowed to move gravitationally to fill indentations (receptors) of matching shape. The performance of the process was evaluated in terms of the time necessary to achieve filling. Results indicate that there is an optimum block density for which the filling time is

Dynamic measurement implies determining the content of signals having spectral structure and energy changing with time, sometimes on very short time scales. Dynamic measurements can present challenges to determine sufficient information in both the time and frequency domains. High resolution in frequency prevents finding short-term peak levels and recognizing true crest factors, and vice versa. If the dynamic measurement concerns sound, the much better simultaneous recognition of time and frequency information by the ear/brain than by conventional measurement methods can further complicate the

We draw a detailed and systematic complexity landscape for combinations of parameters, including the size of the anchor, the size of the anchor's coverage, and parameters that capture structural aspects of the problem i

During weather events, particles can accumulate on the snow near the Pegasus ice and Phoenix compacted-snow Runways at the US McMurdo Station in Antarctica. The deposited particles melt into the surface, initially forming steep-sided holes, which can widen into patches of weak and rotten snow and ice. These changes negatively impact the ice and snow runways and snow roads trafficked by vehicles. To understand the importance of microbes on this process, we examined deposited dust particles and their microbial communities in snow samples collected near the runways.
