Abstract:
Law review articles by D. Michael Risinger, Tim Bakken, Keith Findley, Samuel Gross, and Christopher Slobogin have proposed modifications to pretrial and trial procedures designed to reduce wrongful convictions. Some fit within the adversary model and others have “inquisitorial” features. We compare and evaluate the recommendations from the perspectives of lawyer-scholars trained in the United States and Germany. We examine the proposals for their novelty, feasibility, complexity, likely impact, and possible negative or positive side effects. This Article describes, compares, and critically analyzes the articles; suggests additional truth-enhancing procedural reforms; and provides a platform for further analysis.

Abstract:
Seasonal Sensible Thermal Energy Storages based on existing inside structures are cost effective and require insulation materials with high performance. The insulation must endure high temperatures and high pressure for a long period. In this study, the creep effects of the insulation material XPS (extruded polystyrene foam) at high temperatures and pressure are investigated to determine whether XPS is a suitable insulation material to be applied on the inside of STES. Two studies were conducted: an isothermal long-term creep experiment and a SIM (Stepped Isothermal Method) experiment. The results of the first study were fitted using the Findley approach and extrapolated to 50 years. The SIM study is a method to accelerate creep effects using thermal effects and the Boltzmann superposition principle. Creep strain after 50 years is directly calculated by extrapolation. Both studies indicate that creep strain in XPS remains well below 6% with an applied load of 61.1 kPa at 60 °C after 50 years. Additionally, a material model that predicts creep strain at different or varying temperatures and stress was developed using the SIM data.

Abstract:
Two epoxy resins with different viscosities were enhanced up to 1 wt.%, applying a simple method with carbon nanofibers (CNFs). These were characterized in terms of static bending stress, stress relaxation, and creep tests. In bending, the contents of 0.5 wt.% and 0.75 wt.% of CNFs on Ebalta and Sicomin epoxies, respectively, promote higher relative bending stress (above 11.5% for both) and elastic modulus (13.1% for Sicomin and 16.2% for Ebalta). This highest bending stress and modulus occurs for the lower viscosity resin (Ebalta) due to its interfacial strength and dispersibility of the fillers. Creep behaviour and stress relaxation for three stress levels (20, 50, and 80 MPa) show the benefits obtained with the addition of CNFs, which act as a network that contributes to the immobility of the polymer chains. A long-term experiment of up to 100 h was successfully applied to fit the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts (KWW) and Findley models to stress relaxation and creep behaviour with very good accuracy.

Abstract:
Sustainability and the circular economy are increasingly recognized as global priorities, particularly in industrial waste management. This study explores the development of a sustainable composite material using wood waste and natural fibers, contributing to circular economy practices. Sandwich panels were manufactured with a green epoxy resin matrix, incorporating wood waste in the core and flax fibers in the outer layers. Mechanical tests on the sandwich panel revealed a facing bending stress of 92.79 MPa and a core shear stress of 2.43 MPa. The panel demonstrated good compressive performance, with an edgewise compressive strength of 61.39 MPa and a flatwise compressive strength of 96.66 MPa. The material’s viscoelastic behavior was also characterized. In stress relaxation tests (from an initial 21 MPa), the panel’s stress decreased by 20.2% after three hours. The experimental relaxation data were successfully fitted by the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts (KWW) model for both short- and long-term predictions. In creep tests, the panel showed a 21.30% increase in displacement after three hours under a 21 MPa load. For creep behavior, the KWW model was preferable for short-term predictions, while the Findley model provided a better fit for long-term predictions.

Abstract:
In the present study, the creep behavior of polyetherimide semipreg and epoxy prepreg composites was studied using dynamic mechanical analyzer and focused on structure vs. property relationships in glassy, glass transition, and elastomeric regions. The main contribution to the field is to study pre-impregnated materials concerning creep behavior, mainly based on different analytical models, and microstructure. Two different reinforcements were used (carbon fiber and glass fiber) for each matrix. Findley, Burger, and Weibull analytical models were applied with an excellent fit for the most of them. The impregnation quality, verified by C-scan and the void content by acid digestion, shows different impregnation behaviors, mainly for epoxy/CF, which also influenced molecular motion behavior. The creep behavior was mainly influenced by matrix type than reinforcement architecture and void content. In addition, the creep was higher for epoxy in the glassy region; however, in the glass transition region, higher deformation was found for polyetherimide composites. Previous behavior is mainly attributed to higher energy storage in the glassy region which plays a significant role in the dissipation (glass transition energy), resulting in the energy loss or the drop of storage modulus in a narrow temperature range – more abrupt. This behavior was corroborated by time-temperature superposition curves in which the low deformation obtained for polyetherimide composites at low temperatures is maintained only until the glass transition temperature. Epoxy composites showed a higher initial creep deformation, but the values were almost constant with temperature, even when the temperature passes by the glass transition temperature.

Abstract:
Dunedin mill owner George Findlay published New Zealand's first cottage plans for sale to the public in March 1874. His extensive steam-powered factory bounded by Cumberland, Castle and Stuart Streets supplied all requisites for "cottages, doors, sashes, mouldings, architraves and every description of furnishings for building purposes." The only surviving copy has 30 pages of elevations and floor plans for seven cottages of three to seven rooms. At 1/8 inch to the foot, according to the Otago Witness (9 May 1874) they were "prepared so as to be fit to be put into a builder's hands" and "contain[ed] not fancy sketches but drawings which are practical and to scale." It was boom time in Dunedin, the wealthiest city in the colony, with immigrant demands for housing and for furnishing. Renegade printer Samuel Lister produced another catalogue in July 1875 but this time for George Street cabinetmakers Craig and Gillies, yet both catalogues shared some designs in common. This paper examines what prompted New Zealand's first completely illustrated architectural plans, woodware and furnishing publications to be made, what they contained and most interestingly how they were made.

Abstract:
ObjectiveSpinal epidural lipomatosis (EL) represents an excessive deposition of unencapsulated adipose tissue in the spinal canal that can result in chronic back pain in patients who are obese with and without diabetes. We aim to calculate the total volumetric epidural fat on lumbar spine MRI in a predominately obese population and correlate total epidural fat to lower back pain (LBP) and body mass index (BMI).Research design and methodsWe developed a program (Fat Finder) to quantify volumetric distribution of epidural fat throughout the lumbar spine. Eleven patients with LBP were imaged using two MRI protocols: parallel axial slices and conventional clinical protocol. The distribution of epidural fat per level was analyzed and normalized to the spinal canal size.ResultsOur sample had an average age of 59.9 years and BMI of 31.57 kg/m2. EL subgroup consisted of seven patients. The L2–L5 total fat volume was 3477.6 mm3 (1431.1–5595.9) in the EL group versus 1783.8 mm3 (815.0–2717.5) in the age-similar non-EL group. A higher percentage of fat volume in the canal was associated with higher LBP scores. The fat percentage was 32.2% among patients with EL versus 15.4% for age-similar non-EL with LBP score of 6.1 and 4.0, respectively.ConclusionsThe Fat Finder is a novel volumetric method to quantify epidural lumbar spinal fat. The epidural fat favors the lower spinal segment with direct proportionality between the fat volume and LBP score, independent of BMI.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We describe a new method (compaso) for identifying groups of particles in cosmological N-body simulations. compaso builds upon existing spherical overdensity (SO) algorithms by taking into consideration the tidal radius around a smaller halo before competitively assigning halo membership to the particles. In this way, the compaso finder allows for more effective deblending of haloes in close proximity as well as the formation of new haloes on the outskirts of larger ones. This halo-finding algorithm is used in the abacussummit suite of N-body simulations, designed to meet the cosmological simulation requirements of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. compaso is developed as a highly efficient on-the-fly group finder, which is crucial for enabling good load-balancing between the GPU and CPU and the creation of high-resolution merger trees. In this paper, we describe the halo-finding procedure and its particular implementation in abacus, accompanying it with a qualitative analysis of the finder. We test the robustness of the compaso catalogues before and after applying the cleaning method described in an accompanying paper and demonstrate its effectiveness by comparing it with other validation techniques. We then visualize the haloes and their density profiles, finding that they are well fit by the NFW formalism. Finally, we compare other properties such as radius–mass relationships and two-point correlation functions with that of another widely used halo finder, rockstar.

Abstract:
{\it Objective:} The purpose of this study was to compare anthropometric measurements of children/adolescent (6th grade -- 8th grade) and use these measurements to determine fit by ethnicity and grade level across three common classroom desks and chairs. {\it Study design:} Eighty-eight Caucasian-American (CA), 65 Mexican-American (MA), and 58 African-American (AA) 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in the study (n = 211 students). Students were seated (shoeless) on a horizontal seating surface with an adjustable footrest to obtain 90° angles at the hips, knees, and ankles. Standing height and five seated measurements were obtained using a stadiometer. Desk measurements were obtained from the most common desks used for each grade level. Six measurements (seat height, seat depth, seat slope, desk height, desk clearance, desk slope) were obtained with a tape measure and angle finder. Mismatch was operationalized apriori to determine fit of student dimensions and desks. {\it Results:} Multivariate analysis (SPSS 10.1) revealed significant differences in anthropometric dimensions at each grade level for ethnicity and gender (p < 0.05). Only one 6th grade MA male fit both seat height and depth criteria. One-way ANOVA's and Scheffe post hoc tests revealed significant differences between fit by ethnicity for chair 1 and chair 2. No students experienced knee/desk clearance problems. Only one student was able to find a desk surface that did not exceed their maximum functional elbow height. {\it Conclusions:} AA's had longer lower extremity lengths versus their ethnic counterparts at all grade levels. Subjects did not fit chairs and desks regardless of age or ethnicity. Ethnicity played a significant role in seat height fit for two of the three chairs. These disparities may create a generation with an increased incidence of musculoskeletal problems carrying over to adulthood and the adult workplace.

Abstract: Der Aufsatz untersucht den Einfluss von psychowissenschaftlichen Theorien zu Zuständen nicht-bewusster Intelligenz auf Heinrich von Kleists Schrift „Über das Marionettentheater“ (1810) und Edward Gordon Craigs Text „The Actor and the Über-Marionette“ (1908).

This article critically evaluates whether the ‘rape shield’ legislation in England and Wales, as currently contained in s 41 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act (YJ&CEA) 1999, is fit for purpose. The article addresses the impact of the case of R v Evans (Chedwyn) [2016] EWCA Crim 452 which received a disproportionately high amount of media scrutiny and led to subsequent calls for greater restrictions on sexual behaviour evidence. The article examines possible reform proposals by Findlay Stark and Matt Thomason and the results of empirical research conducted by Laura Hoyano before proposing the introduction of a ‘combined admissibility framework’ for evidence of a complainant’s previous sexual behaviour and bad character. The proposed framework seeks to retain the high threshold for the admissibility, in particular, of evidence relating to a complainant’s previous sexual behaviour while introducing a more holistic and straightforward model moving away from the strict categories approach adopted by s 41 YJ&CEA 1999.

A picture book of food portions was used to estimate portion sizes and the national Food Composition Database Fineli® to calculate nutrient intakes.SettingA representative sample taken in five regions in Finland.SubjectsA total of 730 men and 846 women aged 24–64 years.ResultsThe percentage contribution of fat to the total energy intake was 33 % in men and 31 % in women. The respective percentages for SFA in men and women were 13 % and 12 %, respectively, and 0·4 % for trans fatty acids in both genders. The average intakes of folate, vitamin D and fibre fell below the recommended levels, whereas the average salt intake was somewhat higher than the recommendations. Women’s diet was higher in protein, dietary fibre and sucrose compared to that of men.ConclusionsAccording to the FINDIET 2007 Survey, the dietary habits of the adult Finnish population have headed in a positive direction overall. However, although the quality of the fats consumed has continued to improve, and the intake of salt has decreased, they still do not meet the recommended levels of intake. Similarly, the average intakes of folate and vitamin D continue to fall below the recommendations. There is also a need to increase fibre intake and to cut down the intake of sucrose.

The survey results indicated that both the end-users and IT-experts rated the system above 3.26, which equates to a "very acceptable" grade. This suggests that the system's overall internal and external performance exhibited consistency and met the compliance requirements. However, there is still room for improvement to better serve the needs of its users. The success of the development and assessment of the online tutor finder application demonstrates the potential impact it can have in connecting students with qualified tutors. The study's use of a developmental research design and adherence to ISO 25010 software quality standards ensured the technical quality of the system. With further improvements, the application can continue to make a significant impact in helping students find the right tutor to achieve academic success.

The creation of an online tutor finder application, called "Project Learn", aimed to address the difficulty in finding a tutor for any subject in today's fast-paced world. To achieve this, the study utilized a developmental research design to create an application that connects students with qualified tutors. Abstract:
Abstract Model-independent masses of substellar companions are critical tools to validate models of planet and brown dwarf cooling, test their input physics, and determine the formation and evolution of these objects. In this work, we measure the dynamical mass and orbit of the young substellar companion HD 984 B. We obtained new high-contrast imaging of the HD 984 system with Keck/NIRC2 that expands the baseline of relative astrometry from 3 to 8 yr. We also present new radial velocities of the host star with the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder spectrograph at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Furthermore, HD 984 exhibits a significant proper motion difference between Hipparcos and Gaia EDR3. Our joint orbit fit of the relative astrometry, proper motions, and radial velocities yields a dynamical mass of 61 ± 4 M Jup for HD 984 B, placing the companion firmly in the brown dwarf regime. The new fit also reveals a higher eccentricity for the companion (e = 0.76 ± 0.05) compared to previous orbit fits. Given the broad age constraint for HD 984, this mass is consistent with predictions from evolutionary models. HD 984 B’s dynamical mass places it among a small but growing list of giant planet and brown dwarf companions with direct mass measurements.

The conventional phase difference measuring methods in the phase shift laser range finder are usually implemented with complex hardware circuits and phase discrimination algorithm. In this paper an FFT phase difference measuring method is designed and implemented based on STM32F407VG microcontroller. This method takes the advantage of the pre-set and fixed frequency of the beat signal by setting the analog-to-digital conversion rate precisely and making the input data length of FFT integral multiples of the beat signal period. In this way spectrum correction is no need. The hardware circuits and phase discrimination algorithm is simplified. The test results show that the phase difference measuring accuracy of 1/12000 is achieved.

Abstract We perform an in-depth analysis of the recently validated TOI-3884 system, an M4-dwarf star with a transiting super-Neptune. Using high-precision light curves obtained with the 3.5 m Apache Point Observatory and radial velocity observations with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, we derive a planetary mass of 32.6 − 7.4 + 7.3 M ⊕ and radius of 6.4 ± 0.2 R ⊕. We detect a distinct starspot crossing event occurring just after ingress and spanning half the transit for every transit. We determine this spot feature to be wavelength dependent with the amplitude and duration evolving slightly over time. Best-fit starspot models show that TOI-3884b possesses a misaligned (λ = 75° ± 10°) orbit that crosses a giant pole spot. This system presents a rare opportunity for studies into the nature of both a misaligned super-Neptune and spot evolution on an active mid-M dwarf.

Abstract:
Abstract To overcome the high optical extinction, near-infrared (NIR) observations are needed for probing the microlensing events toward the Galactic center. The 2015–2019 UKIRT microlensing survey toward the Galactic center is the first dedicated precursor NIR survey for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Here, we analyze the online data from the UKIRT microlensing survey, reaching l = b = 0°. Using the event-finder algorithm of KMTNet with the Δχ 2 threshold of 250, we find 522 clear events, 436 possible events, and 27 possible anomalous events. We fit a point-source point-lens (PSPL) model to all the clear events and derive the PSPL parameters with uncertainties using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Assuming perfect detection efficiency, we compute the uncorrected event rates, which should serve as the lower limits on the true event rate. We find that the uncorrected NIR event rates are likely rising toward the Galactic center and are higher than the optical event rates.

Abstract:
Abstract We describe the discovery of a solar neighborhood (d = 468 pc) binary system with a main-sequence sunlike star and a massive noninteracting black hole candidate. The spectral energy distribution of the visible star is described by a single stellar model. We derive stellar parameters from a high signal-to-noise Magellan/MIKE spectrum, classifying the star as a main-sequence star with T eff = 5972 K, log g = 4.54 , and M = 0.91 M ⊙. The spectrum shows no indication of a second luminous component. To determine the spectroscopic orbit of the binary, we measured the radial velocities of this system with the Automated Planet Finder, Magellan, and Keck over four months. We show that the velocity data are consistent with the Gaia astrometric orbit and provide independent evidence for a massive dark companion. From a combined fit of our spectroscopic data and the astrometry, we derive a companion mass of 11.39 − 1.31 + 1.51 M ⊙. We conclude that this binary system harbors a massive black hole on an eccentric (e = 0.46 ± 0.02), 185.4 ± 0.1 day orbit. These conclusions are independent of El-Badry et al., who recently reported the discovery of the same system. A joint fit to all available data yields a comparable period solution but a lower companion mass of 9.32 − 0.21 + 0.22 M ⊙ . Radial velocity fits to all available data produce a unimodal solution for the period that is not possible with either data set alone. The combination of both data sets yields the most accurate orbit currently available.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND: Clinical outcome of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is often poor due to the high prevalence of comorbidities as well as functional impairment that characterize this population. However, a consensus on the definition and measurement of frailty is lacking. The present analysis was designed with the aim to develop a simple and easily applicable frailty score to predict overall survival. PATIENTS: On a retrospective basis, a geriatric assessment (GA) has been performed in 113 CLL patients older than 65 years firstly diagnosed after January 2000 at our institution. GA included the Katz Activity of Daily Living (ADL), the Lawton Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) and the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS). Median age of patients was 71 years (range,65-90) and 32.7% were older than 75 years. According to the Rai staging system 48 (42.4%) patients were in stage 0, 47 (41.6%) in stage I-II and 18 (16%)in stage III-IV. Eighteen patients (16%) had a CIRS score higher than 6, 17 (15%) an ADL score lower than 5 and 21 (18.5%) an IADL score lower than 6. RESULTS: After a median follow-up time of 66 months (range,3-330) 29 (25,6%) out of 113 patients have died and 58 (51.3%) received therapy (i.e., 24 at the diagnosis and 34 after a median follow-up time of 29 months [range, 6-136 months]). Advanced age (HR=3.40), functional decline on ADL (HR=2.90) and IADL (HR=2.70), presence of comorbidities as assessed by CIRS score (HR=2.09), ECOG performance status (HR=4.94) and Rai clinical staging (stage 0 vs I-II, HR=3.65; stage 0 vs III-IV, HR=9.09) were all variables significant in univariate analysis. In a multivariate analysis which did not included Rai clinical staging a higher risk of death was observed for patients older than 75 years (HR=3.11; 95% CI, 1.60-6.06; P=0.001), with ADL lower than 5 (HR 3.50; 95% CI: 1.50-8.40; P=0.02) and CIRS higher than 4 (HR=2.09; 95% CI,1.08-4.05;P=0.03). An additive frailty score based on the integer part of HRs (i.e., 1 point for HR 1.1-1.9; 2 points for HR 2.0-2.9) was then calculated. By combining the risk scores (range, 0-8) for these variables, patients were stratified according to a cutoff finder analysis into 3 distinctive risk groups for overall survival : fit (score = 0, 53,3%), intermediate-fit (score=1-5; 41.5%) and frail (score= 6-8,10%). Median overall survival of patients belonging to fit, intermediate-fit and frail group was as follows: fit, 174 months [95% CI:126-222]; intermediate-fit, 104 months [95% CI:82-127]; frail, 37 months [95% CI:3-71] (P<0.0001)(Fig. 1). The predictive accuracy of our score using Harrell c-index was 0.70 (95% CI:0.53-0.87). Finally, in a head-to-head comparison with Rai clinical staging, by Cox multivariate analysis, our frailty score retained its prognostic significance (fit vs intermediate-fit, HR,3.41 [95% CI,1.63-7.15], P=0.001; fit vs frail, HR, 12.06 [95% CI,3.33-43.67], P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: This study represents the first attempt to develop an additive scoring system for CLL based on functional status, comorbidities and age. GA is a sensitive predictor of clinical outcome and could be used for selecting patients to treat with novel therapies. Figure 1 Figure 1. This paper presents results from a research project where students are followed from the end of upper secondary school into their higher education science programme. We pay particular attention to the students’ continuous negotiation of expectations in relation to the content of their new study programmes and their attempts to become academically integrated. The analysis is focused on those students who found these negotiations difficult. Three negotiation strategies are identified: to endure and just accept that one’s expectations are not honoured; to continuously try to fit what you meet to your expectations; to fit and adjust one’s expectations to what you meet. Cases from the study cohort who used these strategies are identified and these form the basis of the discussion. Particular attention is paid to the importance of students’ ‘identitywork’ in their first year of study and the consequences and implications this has for practice.

Abstract:
Phase shift laser range finder, as a large-scale, high-precision measurement method, is widely used in industrial and military fields. The traditional laser range finder can not meet the need of real-time, high resolution measurement because of its low anti-jamming capability and time-consuming measurement. Owing to this, multi-channel transmitting and receiving system for phase shift laser range finder based on parallel DSP was designed. Multi-frequency modulation laser can be transmitted and received at the same time, improving the measurement speed and avoiding the wrong data fusion because of target moving. The distance was got by measuring the phase difference between the measurement signal and reference signal, and the Doppler velocity of the target is got by measuring the measurement signals frequency, The measurement signals reference signals were acquired by parallel AD convertors, the phase difference between them was calculated adopting all-phase FFT(apFFT). A new frequency correction method was proposed according to the amplitude spectrum acquired by apFFT, Amplitude spectrum is expanded into Taylor series and the correction value of frequency is calculated by relationship of spectrum lines. Monte Carlo simulation results proved that the new frequency correction method had higher resolution and better stability than Rife method and centro-baric method. The experiments is implemented on a precision guide of 3m-long, on the condition that the sampling frequency of AD converter is 937.5KHz, the apFFT transform point number is 4096, distance and velocity results can be obtained each 10ms, experiments prove that the distance measurement standard deviation better than 0.09mm and the velocity measurement standard deviation better than 0.022m/s are obtained. The system can meet the need of high accuracy ,real-time distance measurement of moving target.

Abstract:
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is an active area of robot research. SLAM with a laser range finder (LRF) is effective for localization and navigation. However, commercial robots usually have to use low-cost LRF sensors, which result in lower resolution and higher noise. Traditional scan-matching algorithms may often fail while the robot is running too quickly in complex environments. In order to enhance the stability of matching in the case of large pose differences, this paper proposes a new method of scan-matching mainly based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) as well as its application with a low-cost LRF sensor. In our method, we change the scan data within a range of distances from the laser to various images. FFT is applied to the images to determine the rotation angle and translation parameters. Meanwhile, a new kind of feature based on missing data is proposed to determine the rough estimation of the rotation angle under some representative scenes, such as corridors. Finally, Iterative Closest Point (ICP) is applied to determine the best match. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the scan-matching and SLAM performance for low-cost LRFs in complex environments.

Abstract We report the discovery of a hot Jupiter candidate orbiting HS Psc, a K7 (≈0.7 M ⊙) member of the ≈130 Myr AB Doradus moving group. Using radial velocities over 4 yr from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder spectrograph at the Hobby–Eberly Telescope, we find a periodic signal of P b = 3.986 − 0.003 + 0.044 days. A joint Keplerian and Gaussian process stellar activity model fit to the radial velocities yields a minimum mass of m p sin i = 1.5 − 0.4 + 0.6 M Jup. The stellar rotation period is well constrained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite light curve (P rot = 1.086 ± 0.003 days) and is not an integer harmonic nor alias of the orbital period, supporting the planetary nature of the observed periodicity. HS Psc b joins a small population of young, close-in giant planet candidates with robust age and mass constraints and demonstrates that giant planets can either migrate to their close-in orbital separations by 130 Myr or form in situ. Given its membership in a young moving group, HS Psc represents an excellent target for follow-up observations to characterize this young hot Jupiter further, refine its orbital properties, and search for additional planets in the system.

Abstract:
Cyclone separators are considered one of the most common and widely used method of separating solid particles from fluids. The focus of this paper was to design a separator that could effectively improve the air quality of an industrial working environment by considering factors such as the nature of the particles and the restrictions on the device such as size and operating condition. To do so, a sample of the dust sample was studied to determine the characteristics of the aluminum dust. An initial separator model which satisfied the separation condition was developed, and a second model was developed with the goal of optimizing and reducing the overall size of the separator. All models developed were subjected to CFD simulations to analyze the flow patterns, separation rate at various particle diameters as well as comparing against the theoretical predicted values. The simulation results showed how the change in various parameters improved the separation efficiency. The total height of the model was approximately 20% smaller than the initial proposed design to fit into the manufacturer’s workbench while the separation efficiencies improved by an average of 5% to 10% across various particle sizes. The results obtained indicated that the efficiency of the particle collection is dependent on the area of the barrel inlet of the separator and the depth of the vortex finder.

Abstract:
Abstract TOI-677 b is part of an emerging class of “tidally detached” gas giants (a/R ⋆ ≳ 11) that exhibit large orbital eccentricities and yet low stellar obliquities. Such sources pose a challenge for models of giant planet formation, which must account for the excitation of high eccentricities without large changes in the orbital inclination. In this work, we present a new Rossiter–McLaughlin measurement of the tidally detached warm Jupiter TOI-677 b, obtained using high-precision radial velocity observations with Magellan’s Planet Finder Spectrograph (PFS). Combined with previously published observations from the Very Large Telescope’s ESPRESSO spectrograph, we derive one of the most precisely constrained sky-projected spin–orbit angle measurements to date for an exoplanet. The combined fit offers a refined set of self-consistent parameters, including a low sky-projected stellar obliquity of λ = 3 .° 2 − 1. ∘ 5 + 1. ∘ 6 and a moderately high eccentricity of e = 0.460 − 0.018 + 0.019 , which further constrain the puzzling architecture of this system. We examine several potential scenarios that may have produced the current TOI-677 orbital configuration, ultimately concluding that TOI-677 b most likely had its eccentricity excited through disk–planet interactions. This system adds to a growing population of aligned warm Jupiters on eccentric orbits around hot (T eff > 6100 K) stars.

ABSTRACT We report the detection of a transiting, dense Neptune planet candidate orbiting the bright (V = 8.6) K0.5V star HD 95338. Detection of the 55-d periodic signal comes from the analysis of precision radial velocities from the Planet Finder Spectrograph on the Magellan II Telescope. Follow-up observations with HARPS also confirm the presence of the periodic signal in the combined data. HD 95338 was also observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) where we identify a clear single transit in the photometry. A Markov chain Monte Carlo period search on the velocities allows strong constraints on the expected transit time, matching well the epoch calculated from TESS data, confirming both signals describe the same companion. A joint fit model yields an absolute mass of 42.44$^{+2.22}_{-2.08}\,{\rm M}_{\oplus }$ and a radius of 3.89$^{+0.19}_{-0.20}$R⊕, which translates into a density of 3.98$^{+0.62}_{-0.64}$ g cm−3 for the planet. Given the planet mass and radius, structure models suggest it is composed of a mixture of ammonia, water, and methane. HD 95338 b is one of the most dense Neptune planets yet detected, indicating a heavy element enrichment of ∼90 per cent ($\sim 38\, {\rm M}_{\oplus }$). This system presents a unique opportunity for future follow-up observations that can further constrain structure models of cool gas giant planets.

Abstract We present the detection and characterization of TOI-4994b (TIC 277128619b), a warm Saturn-sized planet discovered by the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. TOI-4994b transits a G-type star (V = 12.6 mag) with a mass, radius, and effective temperature of M ⋆ = 1.00 5 − 0.061 + 0.064 M ⊙ , R ⋆ = 1.05 5 − 0.037 + 0.040 R ⊙ , and T eff = 5640 ± 110 K. We obtained follow-up ground-based photometry from the Las Cumbres Observatory and the Antarctic Search for Transiting ExoPlanets telescopes, and we confirmed the planetary nature of TOI-4994b with multiple radial velocity observations from the Planet Finder Spectrograph, CHIRON, High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, Fiber-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph, and CORALIE instruments. From a global fit to the photometry and radial velocities, we determine that TOI-4994b is in a 21.5 day eccentric orbit (e = 0.32 ± 0.04) and has a mass of M P = 0.28 0 − 0.034 + 0.037 M J , a radius of R P = 0.76 2 − 0.027 + 0.030 R J , and a Saturn-like bulk density of ρ p = 0.7 8 − 0.14 + 0.16 g cm - 3 . We find that TOI-4994 is a potentially viable candidate for follow-up stellar obliquity measurements. Abstract:
Abstract We present the discovery of a low-density planet orbiting the high-metallicity early M-dwarf TOI-5688 A b. This planet was characterized as part of the search for transiting giant planets (R ≳ 8 R ⊕) through the Searching for Giant Exoplanets around M-dwarf Stars (GEMS) survey. The planet was discovered with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, and characterized with ground-based transits from Red Buttes Observatory, the Table Mountain Observatory of Pomona College, and radial velocity (RV) measurements with the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder on the 10 m Hobby Eberly Telescope and NEID on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. From the joint fit of transit and RV data, we measure a planetary mass and radius of 124 ± 24 M ⊕ (0.39 ± 0.07 M J) and 10.4 ± 0.7 R ⊕ (0.92 ± 0.06 R J), respectively. The spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the host star TOI-5688 A shows that it is a metal-rich ([Fe/H] = 0.47 ± 0.16 dex) M2V star, favoring the core-accretion formation pathway as the likely formation scenario for this planet. Additionally, Gaia astrometry suggests the presence of a wide-separation binary companion, TOI-5688 B, which has a projected separation of ~5″ (1110 au) and is an M4V, making TOI-5688 A b part of the growing number of GEMS in wide-separation binary systems.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article reveals the features of coordinated rehabilitation – a process that leads to rehabilitating of people with neurological damage that limits their functionality. The purpose of the article is a literature review within the framework of GAJU 066/2022/S, funded by the grant agency of the South Bohemian University of Czech Budejovice, Czech Republic, examining the effectiveness of coordinated rehabilitation in patients recovering from strokes and the use of the standardized Functional Independence Measure (FIM) test to assess the patient’s condition. Data come from current Czech and foreign publications. The EDS multi-finder was used to search for literary sources. Document searches were from 2016-2022 in Czech and English. Search terms include post-stroke rehabilitation, FIM, rehabilitation after stroke, neurorehabilitation, and community based rehabilitation. The start of coordinated rehabilitation of stroke patients should be timely, long-term, comprehensive, and effective, involving a multidisciplinary approach and teamwork. It is essential to develop an individual approach and create a suitable individual plan that allows the use of the FIM test. This is the only way to establish long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation. As the cost of rehabilitation increases, the financial burden on the healthcare system also increases. Caring for a stroke patient also puts various burdens on the family. Successful rehabilitation can reduce the use of costly medicines and materials and decrease the need for nursing care and the term of hospital stay. The social costs of strokes are associated with long-term dependence and a low degree of resocialization. Considering the frequency of strokes and the associated disability, there is an increasing need for coordinated services within coordinated rehabilitation. Gaps in data on coordinated stroke rehabilitation should be filled by providing necessary information about long-term participation in community-based programs.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveThe aim of the study is to elucidate differences in adults’ diet by education, and to analyse the associations between dietary facilitators, education and dietary fat quality.DesignIn all, one-third of subjects from the national FINRISK health survey were invited to participate in the FINDIET 2007 Survey. A 48 h dietary interview was used for dietary data and personal background data were collected by the health survey questionnaire.SettingRepresentative sample from five regions in Finland in spring 2007.SubjectsA total of 1576 adults, participation rate 60 %.ResultsOil used in cooking differed by education. Instead perception of cardiovascular risk, or the following of a cholesterol-lowering diet, were equal across all educational categories. The diet of men with low education contained less protein and carbohydrates, more fat and more SFA and MUFA than that of highly educated men. The diet of women with low education contained less PUFA, vitamin C and vitamin E than in the highly educated category. High education remained a significant determinant for the lower intake of SFA in men, and for the higher intake of PUFA in women, after adjusting for the determinants and facilitators of dietary behaviour and age. The lower intake of SFA was also associated with following a cholesterol-lowering diet in both genders. In addition to education, the intake of unsaturated fatty acids was determined by the oil used in cooking by women, and by frequent lunches served by caterers for men.ConclusionsIn dietary behaviour, awareness and reporting of cholesterol-lowering diet seem to indicate a tendency to control the intake of saturated fat. Health messages are likely to enhance tools for increasing the intake of PUFA, in addition to reducing the intake of SFA.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Glycine- and arginine-rich (GAR) motifs with different combinations of RG/RGG repeats are present in many proteins. The nucleolar rRNA 2′-O-methyltransferase fibrillarin (FBL) contains a conserved long N-terminal GAR domain with more than 10 RGG plus RG repeats separated by specific amino acids, mostly phenylanalines. We developed a GAR motif finder (GMF) program based on the features of the GAR domain of FBL. The G(0,3)-X(0,1)-R-G(1,2)-X(0,5)-G(0,2)-X(0,1)-R-G(1,2) pattern allows the accommodation of extra-long GAR motifs with continuous RG/RGG interrupted by polyglycine or other amino acids. The program has a graphic interface and can easily output the results as .csv and .txt files. We used GMF to show the characteristics of the long GAR domains in FBL and two other nucleolar proteins, nucleolin and GAR1. GMF analyses can illustrate the similarities and also differences between the long GAR domains in the three nucleolar proteins and motifs in other typical RG/RGG-repeat-containing proteins, specifically the FET family members FUS, EWS, and TAF15 in position, motif length, RG/RGG number, and amino acid composition. We also used GMF to analyze the human proteome and focused on the ones with at least 10 RGG plus RG repeats. We showed the classification of the long GAR motifs and their putative correlation with protein/RNA interactions and liquid–liquid phase separation. The GMF algorithm can facilitate further systematic analyses of the GAR motifs in proteins and proteomes.

Abstract:
Life on Venus Expedition (LOVE) Bugs are a proposed family of miniature, featherlight probes for exploring and sensing the Venusian atmosphere. The Bugs carry tiny ThumbSat femtosatellite buses and instruments beneath balloons or flexible parawings. They are designed to descend from 68 to 45 km altitude over several hours because this part of the atmosphere appears to be most welcoming to life as we know it, according to the Venus Life Finder Mission Study. The parawing option is the subject of this work. In order to fit in with larger probe missions, the LOVE-Bug concept is opportunistic. One anticipated opportunity is to be ejected when a “mother probe” needs to deploy a drogue chute for stabilisation through the transonic regime. This work developed an analogy for such a dramatic Venusian ejection by dropping from a high-altitude balloon in Earth’s stratosphere. By packaging the payload in a small-diameter low-drag capsule and dropping from 28 km, the vehicle accelerates to supersonic velocity at around 18 km, where the wing is ejected and deployed. A variant of the NASA ParaWing was created by incorporating a drag tail to help to stabilise the wing at extremely high and low velocities. Design, simulation, building, and testing work was carried out, and two flights were flown. The second flight demonstrated successful deployment of the wing in representative Venusian entry conditions. Both flights demonstrated that the ThumbSat performed as required in “space”-type conditions. Recommendations for future work, to qualify the LOVE-Bugs for operation on Venus, are presented.
