Both life forms were evaluated for fine-root production variation in relation to changes of nitrogen in the soil, with a fertilization experiment. The patterns of production described in Chapter 11 tell only half of the story about boreal forest production because a large proportion of the carbon (C) acquired by plants is allocated belowground in ways that have traditionally been extremely difficult to quantify. Work in the Bonanza Creek LTER provides considerable insight into the patterns, causes, and consequences of this belowground C allocation. Belowground allocation has a number of important ecosystem consequences beyond the simple fact that C allocated belowground comes at the expense of aboveground growth. Belowground and aboveground tissues differ substantially in the rates of C and nitrogen (N) incorporation into new tissue, the ratio of growth to respiration, and the rate of tissue decay. For example, despite the small biomass of fine roots relative to aboveground tissues in forest ecosystems, disproportionate amounts of C and N cycle annually through fine roots, which grow, die, and decompose very rapidly and have high N concentrations (Hendrick and Pregitzer 1992, Ruess et al. 1996, 2003). The objectives of this chapter are to (1) summarize our understanding of the structure and function of fine-root systems in forest types within the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, (2) compare our findings with the results of studies of other boreal and temperate ecosystems in order to develop a broader understanding of fine-root function, and (3) identify critical research gaps in our understanding of the role of fine-root systems in boreal ecosystem function. Fine roots grow more rapidly than the rest of the root system in a forest and are responsible for the bulk of nutrient and water acquisition. Until recently, fine roots were defined rather arbitrarily as roots less than 1–2 mm in diameter, while roots larger than this were considered coarse roots. Only one data set for fine and coarse root biomass has been published for interior Alaskan forests (Ruess et al. 1996), which shows (1) live fine-root biomass ranging from 221 g m-2 in floodplain white spruce stands to 832 g m-2 in upland birch-aspen stands, (2) a positive correlation between fine-root and coarse-root biomass, with coarse-root biomass averaging 50% greater than fine roots, and (3) no relationship between aboveground biomass and fine or coarse root biomass.

Chicago emerged two decades after its Great Fire of 1871 to host America's second world's fair, and with it witnessed the birth of a Black cultural movement along with the city's general rebirth. First in the performing arts, then progressing slower in the visual and literary arts, the next four decades beheld the rise of the foundational elements of a Black Chicago Renaissance somewhat paralleling that in Harlem but in an asymmetrical fashion. The term “soil management” refers to the human manipulation of chemical, physical, and biological conditions of the soil for the production of agricultural plants. Good soil management helps maintain and improve soil fertility while sustaining optimum crop yield over time, whereas inappropriate soil management practices can lead to the degradation of soil fertility and a declining crop yield within a relatively short period of time. In a cropped field, where pests and disease are not limiting factors, the decline in crop yield over time may be attributed to several soil-related factors, namely, deterioration of soil physical conditions, such as surface crusting and subsurface compaction, depletion of available nutrients in the soil and soil acidification, soil moisture stress (drought or waterlogging), and the decline in soil organic matter and soil biological activity. Thus, major tasks of soil management for crop production include the following: • tillage and seedbed preparation • replenishment of soil nutrients • soil moisture management • maintenance of soil organic matter The main purposes of tillage are to loosen a compacted surface soil to facilitate seed emergence and root growth through improved soil aeration and water storage, and to eradicate weeds before planting and control subsequent weed growth during the cropping season. Common tillage practices used in tropical agriculture are as follows: • Slash-and-burn, followed by sowing seeds into holes made by punching a wooden stick into the porous surface soil. • Slash-and-burn, followed by heaping or ridging the compacted surface soil using a hand hoe. • Plowing, harrowing, and puddling in irrigated rice paddies using water buffalo or a two-wheel power-tiller. • Ridge tillage using a hand hoe, animal traction or an engine-powered tractor on crusted or compacted soils and poorly drained clayey soils. • Minimum or strip tillage with a crop-residue mulch on coarse-textured soils and on sloping land. • Conventional tillage involving plowing and harrowing on fine-textured soils and compacted soils on flatland. • Minimum tillage with a plant-residue mulch or cover crop in annual and tree crop mixed systems (agroforestry).

The term menu du jour (French) or menu del dia (Spanish) is sometimes used instead of the term table d’hôte menu. Another menu term used is carte du jour (literally ‘card of the day’), or ‘menu of the day’, which can also be a fixed meal with one or more courses for a set price. A prix fixe (fixed price) menu is similar. A ‘tasting menu’ (menu degustation) is a set meal with a range of courses (often between six and ten). These tasting menus are offered in restaurants where the chef provides a sample of the range of dishes available on the main menu. Fresh cassava roots are transformed into shelf stable raw materials (flours and extracted starches). Chemical composition (moisture, protein, lipid, fibre and amylose content, cyanide contents), dry matter, starch extraction yields, particle size distribution and whiteness index are some of the quality characteristic requirements for selection of varieties in breeding programs, and raw materials for industrial processes. Starch yields ranges 20–35%, and vary with genotype. The crude protein (1–2%) and crude fat (∼1%) are considered minor components of cassava and are indicative of the poor nutritional quality. The cumulative of particles passing finer than sieve (D90) is commonly selected for industrial applications because it yields a large proportion of flour in the range 90–96% finer particle than sieve size. The amylose is the main genetic trait for categorising starches into waxy, semi-waxy, normal/regular and high amylose types when amylose content is 0–2, 3–15, 16–35, and &gt; 35% of the total starch, respectively. Additionally, amylose is basic criteria for blending flours of different botanical sources. Cassava varieties are classified as sweet and bitter varieties when cyanide values are in the range 15–50 and 50–400 ppm, respectively. The a* (redness-greenness) and b* (yellowish) are considered as impurities in white fleshed cassava.

This book focuses on these changes through the creation, production, distribution, and consumption of a selection of television and Internet fiction, exploring the new mediascape that has taken root in Brazil since 2011. The objective is not to predict what that mediascape will be in the coming decades but to shed light on the emergence and the consequences of the post-2011 mediascape as a particular conjuncture. Ultimately, I argue that the ongoing transition from the nearly five-decade, TV Globo–dominated Network Era (1968–2011) to the increasingly competitive and fragmented post-2011 mediascape has given way to fundamental changes to the economic models, modes of production, producers, distribution windows, and consumption that have largely defined the Brazilian mediascape since the late 1960s. Such changes, I contend, also have major implications for the symbolic construction of the national social imaginary.

Abstract:
In this paper, we consider scheduling problems involving resources that must perform complex setup operations between the tasks they realize. To deal with such problems, we introduce a simple yet efficient iterative two-layer decision process that alternates between the fast synthesis of high-level schedules based on a coarse-grain model of setup operations, and the production of detailed schedules based on a fine-grain model. Experiments realized on representative benchmarks of a multi-robot application show the efficiency of the approach.
