Abstract:
This paper revisits the hypothesis that Karitiana is a verb second language in which the finite verb occupies a second structural position in the sentence (C). We show that, although embedded clauses are SOV, the finite verb in a transitive declarative sentence is in second position and the default order is SVO. Other sentential types are examined, including negated sentences, focus and discourse topic contexts, and poetic parallelisms, and the conclusion is that there is a phonological requirement in the language that makes a phonological phrase occur before the finite verb. Whereas the V2 phenomenon in Germanic languages is categorical, in Karitiana it is possible for sentences to be verb-initial besides the above-mentioned phonological requirement which, together with verb movement, is responsible for the verb second phenomenon in the language.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------ARGUMENTOS A FAVOR E CONTRA V2 EM KARITIANAEste artigo revisita a hipótese de que a língua Tupi Karitiana é uma língua V2, em que o verbo finito ocupa uma segunda posição estrutural da sentença (C).

Abstract:
The grammatical morphology deficits common in children with specific language impairment (SLI) are characterized in some models as linguistic deficits. Such models must assume some mechanism for correct productions of finite verb forms. Three such assumptions were tested by analyzing speech samples from 18 children with SLI (aged 3 years 6 months to 6 years 9 months). Assumption 1, that nonfinite forms are used consistently until replaced by memorized finite forms, was tested by examining the distribution of verb types in present thirdperson singular and noun types in present third-person singular contractible copula contexts. Significantly more word types than expected were inflected inconsistently. Both Assumption 2, that finite and nonfinite verb forms are memorized but used indiscriminately, and Assumption 3, that affixation rules are applied indiscriminately, predict random use of finite forms. This prediction was not supported.

Abstract:
The verb phrase is built up of a verb, which is the head of the construction. Verb occurs as predicate in the rightmost position of a clause. As a predicate it selects arguments (Ex. Subject, Direct object, Indirect object and Locative NPs) and assigns case to its arguments and adverbial adjuncts. Another syntactic property of verbs in Tamil is that they can govern subordinate verb forms. Verb occurring as finite verbs in clause final position can be complemented by non-finite verbs proceeding them. The latter with respect to the interpretation of tense or subject governs these non-finite forms, being subordinate to the finite verb form. If we follow the traditional idea of having a VP node for Tamil, then all the elements, except the subject NP, will have to be grouped under VP.

Abstract:
Lastele suunatud kõne verbi kõrvuti kasutustel on mõned täiskasva nutele suunatud kõnest erinevad jooned, kõige enam on selliseid erijooni partikli laadsete verbivormidega kõrvutikasutustel. Suhtluses on sellistel ühenditel käsu intensiivistamise roll, selle kõrval ka koostöö algatamise, lapse tegevuse pidurdamise, ergutamise, aga ka tegevuse muutmise roll. Abstract. Reili Argus: The co-occurrences of verb finite forms used by children and their caregivers. The article describes the co-occurrences of verb finite forms used by children and their caregivers in directive speech acts of spontaneous everyday speech. The role of co-occurrences of verbs have been described from the perspective of Estonian everyday directive communication and from the perspective of first language acquisition. The co-occurrences of finite verbs are frequent in child directed speech and almost every fifth directive utterance consists of co-occurrence of verb finite forms. These kinds of co-occurrences are not characteristic to children’s speech and only a couple of examples can be found from their data. The frequency of verb co-occurrences does not change during the observation period, so, the clear fine-tuning effect of the child directed speech was not observed in the analyzed data. All instances of verb co-occurrences have been divided into two sub-classes – the repetitions of the same lemma and co-occurrences of different lemmas, last sub-class consists of constructions where the first verb denotes movement, that is typical serial constructions; constructions where the first verb was a particlelike verb form; and constructions with conjunctions. The most frequent type of verb co-occurrences in child directed speech were typical serial constructions and constructions where the first constituent was particle-like verb form, repetitions of same lemma were not so frequent. The co-occurrences of verb finite forms used in child directed speech had some features which are not characteristic to adult directed speech, such different features were registered mostly in constructions with particle-like verb forms. In adult-child interaction, verb co-occurrences have mostly been used for intensifying the command, but also for initiating cooperation, stopping, stimulating, and modifying the child’s activities.

Abstract:
Although the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European as verb-final is widely accepted, there continue to be dissenting opinions (e.g. Friedrich 1975). See e.g. Pires & Thomason (2008), who question the fruitfulness of Indo-European syntactic reconstruction. In this article I address two issues: First, the reconstructable subordination strategies, including relative-correlative structures, are perfectly in conformity with verb-final typology — pace Lehmann (1974) and Friedrich (1975) who considered relative clauses with finite verbs and relative pronouns incompatible with SOV. Second, verb-final reconstruction makes it possible to account for prosodic and segmental changes that single out finite verbs, such as the non-accentuation of Vedic finite verbs and i-apocope preferentially targeting finite verbs in Italic, Celtic, and Baltic-Slavic. Both developments find a natural, prosodically motivated explanation if we accept PIE as SOV, but not if we do not accept that reconstruction. These facts show that, pace Pires & Thomason (2008), the reconstruction of PIE as verb-final is a fruitful hypothesis.

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris, ENMP, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ENMP0026/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Model Order Reduction (MOR) methods are used to cope with high computational costs typically involved in parametric analysis of structures requiring a huge number of almost similar simulations. Among them, a so-called hyperreduction method suitable for non-linear mechanical finite element (FE) problems is studied. An objected-oriented approach to deal with it in the framework of a FE software is carried out. The software design takes advantage of a two-level process : a so-called offline computation step in which the reduced model is set up based on collected snapshots of mechanical system states and an online high-speed reduced computation which runs the reduced model. The code design relying on a reduced element is expected to enhance performance, to give a clearer view over the process and to favour code reuse in subsequent developments of the method. Futhermore, the hyperreduction method is reviewed and is deeply improved : vector and tensor bases are introduced to deal with non-scalar fields which arise in non-linear mechanical FE problems and the mechanical balance is ensured in the extrapolation phase. A particular emphasis is placed on the treatment of free and periodic boundary conditions. In this approach, the boundary conditions at the edge of the reduced integration domain are enforced in the reduced balance equations. Numerical toy examples of elasticity fiber/matrix inclusions as well as a full adaptative non-linear simluation are provided to show the capabilities of the implementation. To take into account microstructural behaviors, FE2 methods consist in splitting the computation into two scales. At the micro scale the material constitutive equations are integrated over periodic RVEs. The behavior of the macro structure is carried out by a homogeneized process. A multidimensional hyperreduction method is applied to the massive micro problem composed of the set of the periodic RVEs. A BFGS algorithm is used to update the macro tangent matrices at each integration Gauss point. Some speed-ups are recorded for low dimensional models. However, as the number of degrees of freedom increases, the multidimensional hyperreduction method is proved to be far less efficient to cut computational costs down

Abstract:
The physical phenomena in the electrical engineering field are based on Maxwell's equations in which solutions are functions verifying the material properties and satisfying certain boundary conditions on the field. The finite element method (FEM) is the most commonly used method to calculate the solutions of these equations and deduce the magnetic and electric fields.Nowadays, the parallel computing on graphics processors offers a very high computing performance over traditional calculation by CPU. The GPU-accelerated computing makes use of a graphics processing unit (GPU) together with a CPU to accelerate many applications in science and engineering. It enables massively parallelized tasks and thus accelerate the performance by offloading the compute-intensive portions of the application to the GPU while the remainder of the application still runs on the CPU.The thesis deals with the modeling in the magnetic field using the finite element method. The aim of the thesis is to improve the performance of the MEF by taking advantage of the high performance parallel computing on the GPU. Thus if the calculation can be performed in near real-time, the simulation tools would become an intuitive design tool which allow for example to "feel" the sensitivity of a design modification of geometric and physical parameters. A new field of use of simulation codes would open. This is the theme of this work, which tries to accelerate the different phases of a simulation to make the whole almost instantaneous. So in this thesis, the meshing, the numerical integration, the assembly, the resolution and the post processing are discussed respectively. For each phase, the methods in the literature are examined and new approaches are proposed. The performances are analyzed and compared. The implementation details are described as the overall performance of GPU approaches are closely linked to these choices

Abstract:
Over the last decades, metamaterials have been shown to exhibit extraordinary properties. These properties could allow the design of new devices such as negative refractive index lenses, cloaking devices and perfectly flat lenses. This PhD is part of the ANR METAPHOTONIQUE project and its main objective was to study the potential of metamaterials for integrated photonics at telecommunication wavelengths. This required to first better understand the behavior of metamaterials, which led us to study effective index models. The retrieval of effective optical parameters required to be able to simulate the optical response of metamaterials under oblique incidence excitation. Due to this, we had to study and implement such methods for FDTD computations. Our work also showed that asymmetrical metamaterials possessed the ability to make the polarization of guided modes rotate. This allowed us to design and characterize a potential device for integrated photonics, which effectively converts the polarization of guided modes over lengths shorter than half the wavelength. A secondary goal of this PhD was to study the potential compensation of losses occuring within the metallic nanostructures of our metamaterials through the use of materials with gain. Thus, a model allowing us to simulate such materials in FDTD has been implemented

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Two major religions, Judaism and Christianity, use the ancient Hebrew Bible as Holy Scripture. These books were translated in the last three centuries before the common era. The oldest of these translations is the Septuagint, a Greek translation. Not only are the Hebrew and Greek texts that were involved in the original translation process missing, but precious little is known about the doctrine and translation methods of the translators of the Septuagint. Much can be learned about these crucial issues, however, if the translation technique followed by those ancient translators is studied by comparing the present Hebrew and Greek texts. A new method to determine and describe the translation technique of the Septuagint was proposed and tested in this dissertation. This method is based on the use of the Computer Assisted Tools for Septuagint Studies (CATSS) data base and statistical methods. The translation technique of the book Deuteronomy was described using different criteria, all of which measure the frequency of non-literal renderings. Three different groups of criteria were utilized, viz. the Tov criteria as proposed by E. Tov, criteria defined using the markers in the CATSS data base called the CATSS criteria, and grammatical criteria using the person of the verb. Each criterion was applied to the data base individually. The translation units were determined first, after which the translation technique found within the translation unit was described. The methodology implemented discriminates between significant and insignificant trends in translation technique. It became clear that the results of the different criteria indicate different translation units and different translation techniques for each of the criteria. Except for some criteria using the person of the verb, very little indication was found that the traditional translation units are supported by the data used in this study. In fact, it seems as if translation units should be determined before the translation technique is described. The translation technique should then be described according to the indicated units. Not all the Tov criteria could be utilized, but their results are in agreement to some extent. The CATSS criteria proved to be more difficult to implement than expected, but some of the criteria rendered excellent results. The person of the verb was discussed in detail using 12 different criteria. The results of the criteria utilizing the person of the verb are disappointing, and provide some scope for future research. The results rendered by this new approach are firm and easy to interpret. In addition, it is possible to utilize these results when dealing with specific text-critical problems.

Clouet, Boris. "Comportement hydromécanique d'assemblages bois collés à l'état vert : approches expérimentale et numérique." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014BORD0036/document.

Abstract:
The development of new adhesives during the last decades has implied radically changes in the sawmill industry. The gluing of unseasonned wood, called green gluing, allows a new order in the process of engineered wood products, thanks to the final position of the drying step. Nevertheless, the jointing prevents the free shrinkage of wood during the mass transfer, involving a stress development. Nowadays, numerous drying models have been developed to predict the deformations and stresses of wood, but few have been confirmed by experimental tests. For an organic material such as wood, the measurement of hygromechanical properties will be more efficient if there is no interaction between the material and the measurement system. One of the most promising experimental techniques for this kind of issue is noncontact optical measurement based on Digital Image Correlation principles. The objective of this study is to evaluate by experimental and numerical solutions the stress development in green-glued wood laminated timber subjected to drying conditions. An experimental method has been set up and the results allow to validate a numerical finite elements model. The model which has been chosen is an orthotropic elastic model, able to describe the morphology of the wood material. This study allows to identify the parameters governing the damage of the interface. This approach leads to suggest some preconizationsin order to optimize the behavior of product during the drying procedure

Abstract:
The term ‘Object Shift’ means that a weak object pronoun has been raised to a position to the left of a sentence adverbial. Primarily, there are two positions to which a weak object pronoun can be raised; one of them is called Long Object Shift. In this paper, I primarily deal with finite verb frequencies in sentences with Long Object Shift in Swedish. Also, in order to further define the verbs in these sentences I discuss verb semantic and syntactic valence in relation to the shifted object. Furthermore, I discuss the search methods which have generated sentences with Long Object Shift in written sources in Swedish; an equivalent study has never been done before.   The most salient results of my study indicate that: verbs with physical denotation, and specifically vänta, möta and slå, frequently recur in sentences with Long Object Shift in written sources in Swedish; monotransitive verbs appear more often than ditransitive ones; shifted objects are most often assigned the semantic role of experiencer in the studied sentences; the search methods show divergent results, which indicates the significance of sentence adverbial initiating sentences with Long Object Shift. Lastly, the results show that semantic analyses, terminology and search methods need to be extended in order to further define the finite verb in sentences with Long Object Shift in Swedish.
