Abstract:
The article examines if and how gender diversity and queer are present in the policies guiding Finnish art education and how these documents might influence praxis. The authors explore relations between policy and practice through a close study and analysis of the Finnish national core curriculum for basic education as it relates to the broader Finnish culture of power and politics. The authors approach the topic using epistemic injustice as the framework, and suggest that current international and national policy and guidelines that define human rights, gender equality, the rights of gender and sexual minorities, and education have created a broad and deeply seated normative, binary mindset that not only impairs the actualization of equity in education but also makes it a paradox. To unpack the suggested epistemic injustice, the authors contextualize their arguments through a critical study of policies and guidelines for human rights and Finnish compulsory education and frame this with particular theories, the capability approach and feminist and critical pedagogy.

Abstract:
Abstract Evidence regarding the psychiatric morbidity of children born after Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) is inconsistent and limited. While normal mental well-being for ART children is usually reported, concerns are still being raised. Previous studies examine only some psychiatric disorders, but not all of them, ignore the impact of multiplicity, and limit the follow-up time to childhood. We examined all psychiatric diagnoses for singletons until their young adulthood. The aim was to study whether the risk of psychiatric disorders differs between ART and spontaneously conceived (SC) singletons until young adulthood. This retrospective Finnish population-based register study includes all ART and SC live-born children born in Finland during 1990–2013 and their hospital care in 1990–2014 (n = 1,425,975 of which 1,385,956, 97.2% were singletons). After excluding multiples, the final population included 17,610 ART and 1,368,346 SC singletons in 1990–2013 from the Finnish Medical Birth Registry. These data were linked to the Finnish Hospital Discharge Registry with the child’s and mother’s encrypted IDs. ART singletons had fewer psychiatric diagnoses (ART 10.2%, n = 1796, SC 12.0%, n = 164,408), but they received their diagnoses earlier (mean 8.3 years old, SD 5.0) than SC singletons (mean 10.5 years old, SD 5.7). After adjusting for confounding factors, ART singletons had an increased likelihood of getting a psychiatric diagnosis until young adulthood and the results were similar for boys (adjusted hazard ratios [aHR] = 1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10–1.24) and girls (aHR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.16–1.35). We conclude that ART children receive their psychiatric diagnoses earlier than SC children, in particular during childhood and early adolescence. After adjusting for confounding factors ART children a slightly increased likelihood of any psychiatric diagnosis compared to SC controls.

Abstract:
Literature on Finnish art can be sought via the national bibliography and periodicals indexes and a bibliography of Finnish history; these bibliographies are available as databases as well as in printed form and on microfiche. A working party on art libraries is looking into ways of widening bibliographical control of art literature. The publications themselves, and unpublished information, can be found in libraries and archives of several kinds, from the Library of Helsinki University to the libraries and archives of colleges of art and architecture, museums, and artists’ associations. Many of these organisations are active in gathering and publishing information. The Fine Arts Academy of Finland administers the Art Musum of the Ateneum, Finland’s national gallery, and maintains extensive collections of visual resources, exhibition catalogues, periodicals, and press clippings.

Abstract:
The paper addresses the history of the formation of such a phenomenon in European musical art in the late XIX century – the first half of the XX century as Finnish national opera. The aim of the study is to identify the features of the search for a national hero in Finnish opera art. The paper sheds light on the main milestones in the history of Finnish opera (the iconic works of J. Sibelius, E. Melartin, L. Madetoja, A. Launis are considered); the history of the emergence of pietism in Finland, a Protestant religious movement that influenced the formation of Finnish national identity, as well as the solution of the problem of the opera hero in Finland, is described; special attention is paid to characterising the structural and compositional features of the opera “The Last Temptations” (1975), dedicated to the life and fate of the Finnish pietist Paavo Ruotsalainen, written by Joonas Kokkonen, one of the most significant Finnish composers of the XX century. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the paper identifies the peculiarities of the interpretation of Ruotsalainen’s character, perceived since the XX century as a great national figure, in a work ranked among the best examples of Finnish national opera. As a result, the author comes to the conclusion that the history of Finnish opera in general and the search for its heroes in particular occupies an important place in the history of the development of European opera art.

Abstract:
This article takes part in the discussion that revolves around games and gaming and presents an example on how they have been implemented to the curriculum of Finnish art teacher training. The article explores the results of a nationwide survey for art teachers concerning games and gaming and how it supported the curriculum design for pre-serving art education students. The most significant addition to the curriculum was a master’s-level course ‘Games, Gaming and Game Design’. The article presents the course in detail and how it has evolved during four semesters between 2017 and 2020. The theoretical framework for the curriculum design was built on Deweyan pragmatist aesthetics and constructionist ludology. The article suggests that games and gaming are an integral part of art education and best addressed in a holistic manner, not only as visual representations or tools for learning.

Tuomi, Scott Lawrence. "Finnish art song for the American singer." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289889.

Abstract:
Art song teachers are constantly seeking new repertoire for their students. Many countries outside those commonly represented in American vocal studios (for instance Spain and Russia) have rich art song traditions which merit inclusion in the vocal studio. In this era of increased cultural awareness, many other areas of music education are seeking to explore these repertoires. However, many art songs are unable to be utilized because of the lack of resources in this country concerning their acquisition, identification, history, pronunciation and performance. Finland has a vast art song repertoire that is largely unexplored by American singers and teachers for the reasons mentioned above. A relatively new nation, Finland has a rich past which has remained a mystery to the west because of its close connection to the former Soviet Union. In addition, prior to the twentieth century, Finland had been under the control of foreign governments including those of Russia and Sweden since the Middle Ages. This document seeks to identify and examine Finnish art songs while providing background information regarding their history, development, and relevance to Finnish culture. In addition, tools for acquiring and performing Finnish art song are included to facilitate the inclusion of these songs in American vocal studios. Various sections include the development of the art song genre in Finland, the connection of songs to the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, and a brief examination of the Finno-Ugrian language group. Biographical information is provided for seven selected composers arranged in chronological order. A total of ten songs are analyzed from the selected composers and an English translation is also provided for each. In addition, a collection of appendices providing complete lists of published songs for each composer, a Finnish IPA pronunciation chart, contact information for Finnish music publishers and musical resources and a selected discography are included.

Saunders, Jessica Anne. "Songs of the Kalevala: art song inspired by the Finnish national epic." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5622.

Abstract:
The Kalevala, first published in 1835 by Elias Lönnrot, is the Finnish national epic and was fundamental in formalizing the Finnish language. It is a collection of stories Lönnrot collected over many years, pieced together to create a coherent epic. The stories in the Kalevala stem from an oral tradition, in which singing and music was integral. The stories in the epic contain many different characters, with Väinämöinen and his quest in to find a wife at the forefront. Other major characters discussed include Kullervo, Lemminkäinen, and Luonnotar. Extensive research exists about the history of the Kalevala itself, as well as its impact on music in Finland in the areas of pop music, symphonic music, choral music, and opera. However, little scholarship exists, regarding how the texts from the Kalevala have been incorporated into 19th and 20th century art song. The lack of research about the Kalevala in art song is due partly to the fact that no catalogue of related songs exists. Also, works based on the Kalevala are hard to obtain, as many are only available in manuscript form, or are found only in the Finnish National Archives. This essay aims to bridge the research gap on art song inspired by the Kalevala, while evaluating the works available in the context of their incorporation of the folk singing tradition that would have been used in the early performance of these Kalevala texts. Songs analyzed include works by Gabriel Linsén, Emil Kauppi, Jean Sibelius, Otto Kotilainen, and Erkki Melartin.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the internationalization of Finnish contemporary artists. The focus is on their exhibitions at contemporary art institutions in Sweden, covering the period 2004–2013. The aim is to investigate what makes these exhibitions to materialize. The main question is: How do different actors, networks, collaborations, and the field of artistic production look like when art is exported for exhibition purposes from Finland to Sweden? Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory and the Uppsala internationalization process model are used as the theoretical framework. Information is collected via interviews with three Finnish artists and three Swedish curators. The main result is that the artists do not actively impact the internationalization process themselves. Rather, the internationalization occurs through an international network of professionals, some acting on behalf of the artists, and some acting in their own interests. The main driving factor for internationalization is that the Finnish art market is small. Consequently, young contemporary artists are oriented internationally. For internationalization to occur, the artists must be available to foreign curators through the international networks. Finland is aware of this and promotes international art contacts through the foundation Frame Visual Art Finland. Important contact surfaces, where curators can learn about the artists, are art events, like European art biennials.

Abstract:
This essay looks at memorials and monuments raised in Finland dedicated to the civil war 1918 from both the red and the white side. The earliest memorials are from 1918 and the newest one from 1964. The difference between the two sides and the change over time is looked at through a few chosen monuments and memorials analyzed using semiotics and reception aesthetics. The use of symbols is extensive throughout the period, but the form they take, as well as their connotation, change over time, depending on the political context they are created in. They are created with different aims.

Abstract:
Abstract Accounting for environmental effects in fatigue has long been a necessity in Finland. This requirement was placed into the national regulatory guides in 2002 and the regulatory body, Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) required the license holders of operating reactors to respond by 2004. At that time, the international state-of-the-art was reviewed and found not mature. However, reasonable approaches for accounting environmental effects were developed and adopted by both utilities, Fortum and TVO. Adoption of the proposed new design curves was considered impractical and calculation of Fen factors was preferred. This placed the Finnish utilities among the first industries, who brought environment assisted fatigue (EAF) into practice. At the same time, fatigue design of the new EPR design (OL3) was also subject of the requirement. The experimental work and approaches developed by Areva have been widely discussed in previous PVP Conferences. A high number of PVP papers in these ‘ENVIRONMENTAL FATIGUE ISSUES’ sessions reveals that work remains to be done before the state-of-the-art in EAF is mature and an international consensus can be reached. Follow-up of evolving state-of-the-art is a part of the safety culture for Finnish utilities and regulator. Therefore, we encourage the researchers and engineers together to find solutions, which can be justified by sound arguments and brought into practice to reduce confusion and bias in fatigue management.

Abstract:
The material culture of Karelians had developed in the XI–XIII centuries, it had a heterogeneous origin. It can be seen in women’s finery. The origin of the ornaments of oval brooches, one of its parts, remains unclear. This article examines brooches with the knot-braided ornaments, their stylistic features, and draws on analogies from Finnish and Novgorod medieval art — the probable prototypes. For the first time, the formal- stylistic method was used to analyze oval brooches.

Abstract:
Abstract All international codes used for design, operation and inspection of NPP primary circuit pressure boundaries are rooted to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Nuclear Vessels, 1963. Article 4, N-415 “Analysis for cyclic operation” instructed calculation of stress intensities for fatigue transients and provided two design curves for basic material types. Different codes such as ASME, RCC-M, KTA, PNAE and JSME have much in common, but partial deviations exist. In 2007 the US NRC Regulatory Guide 1.207 endorsed a methodology for accounting the environmental effects. It was mainly based on extensive work in Japan and the Argonne National Laboratory. The final report of ANL, NUREG/CR-6909 became a major reference and subject of criticism. However, the first approach for environment assisted fatigue (EAF) written in ‘code language’ was published in Japan and a regulatory requirement for consideration of EAF both for operating reactors and new designs appeared first in Finland. This paper discusses challenges in management of fatigue and the evolving state-of-the-art in different codes, standards, rules and assumptions. The roots and current status of fatigue curves and design criteria applied in Finnish NPP’s are explained.

Abstract:
В XVIII в. The geographical factor plays a twofold role in the history of Finland and its relations with the outside world. On the one hand, the territorial situation on the edge of Europe caused the Finns to join the civilizational process relatively late. On the other hand, the lands washed by the waters of the far reaches of the Baltic Sea are located in one of the most strategically important European regions. Although England, Germany and France have long been interested in the "Finnish territories", external influence for Finns is primarily connected with the hostility of their closest neighbors. It was the political vacuum in which the Finns remained until the beginning of the XI century, that Sweden and the Roman Catholic Church tried to fill from the west, Russia (Veliky Novgorod) and the Orthodox Church – from the east. The first border between Sweden and Russia was established in 1323. According to the Orekhov Peace Treaty, Sweden received the southwestern and western Finnish territories, Russia – East Karelia. In the XYIII century Russia began the gradual return of the Finnish lands, annexing Finland after the results of the war of 1808–1809. Within the borders of the arch-conservative Russian Empire, a Western-type Finnish state was born and gradually took shape. Finland received a wide political and economic autonomy – the government, the four–member body of the People's representation (Seim), the tax and financial system, its citizenship, currency, etc. Finland and the new metropolis were initially separated by the customs border. The head of the legislative power was the emperor, who ruled Finland on the basis of the fundamental laws (constitution) of the Swedish period. Being a part of the Russian state, Finland gradually became a political community, as well as one of the most economically developed regions of the empire. Russia's concessions were determined by the need to ensure the security of the western border.

Abstract:
"This study aims to examine the experience of international students studying in Finland based on a phenomenographical approach. Due to the nationality of the researcher Iranian students were selected as the research sample and 25 tertiary-level students from various Finnish universities were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. The collected data were assessed and interpreted based on the theory of Anxiety-Uncertainty Management (AUM). The results showed that the Finnish academic system, such as teaching/ learning strategies, assessment methods, and university facilities, reduces participants’ anxiety/uncertainty. The participants noted fundamental differences between characteristics and teaching style of Finnish and Iranian teachers in universities. However, this unexpected situation not only did not make them anxious, but also made them feel more comfortable than when they were studying in Iranian universities. In contrast, Finnish culture, and communication issue associated with language barriers and lack of job opportunities increase participants' anxiety/uncertainty. Many participants did not consider themselves members of Finnish society, and some felt they were strangers. The findings highlighted the important role of communication as an AUM thematic principle and propose a set of axioms to AUM theory that focuses more on the different dimensions of communication in an intercultural context. Given the importance of context in the study of communication issues, further studies are recommended to understand the intercultural issues of students of other nationalities in different contexts."

Abstract:
This quantitative study focuses on socio-demographic variables and their associations with different forms of showrooming behavior. The purpose of this study is to find which consumer groups based on age, gender, and income level are demographically the most probable showroomers, and how much each of these variables explain showrooming. The data used is a structured online survey from 1,028 Finnish omnichannel consumers aged between 18 and 75 years. We compare the means of demographic groups’ shares on different aspects of showrooming, and then use partial least squares structural equation modeling with confirmatory factor analysis to see how much each of the variables explain showrooming. The findings show that showrooming behavior is explained most by age, and that the most probable showroomers are younger consumers, higher income consumers and female consumers. The findings also show that finding information and better prices for the products are the most typical forms of showrooming.

Abstract:
Finland is a bilingual country with two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. Finland’s constitution states that every Finnish citizen has the right to communicate with authorities in either Swedish or Finnish – including access to education. All Finnish-speaking students are required to learn Swedish from fifth or sixth grade and all Swedish-speaking Finns are required to learn Finnish from first or third grade. Swedish-language education is available from the daycare level up to the university level. This Tailor-Made process focusing on wellbeing innovations was done together with four Swedish-speaking vocational institutions. These institutions are located in bilingual or Swedish-speaking municipalities, and all of them are offering vocational education and training to over 1000 students.

Kayo, Genku, and Nobue Suzuki. Measurement of air change behaviour at Finnish apartment rooms. Department of the Built Environment, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54337/aau541579038.

Full text
Abstract:
While the expectation for natural ventilation is increasing under the context of COVID-19, fresh air at residential houses in Finland is basically guaranteed by mechanical ventilation systems. It means that natural ventilation is not considered as an available potential of ventilation in Finnish building regulation. Even if the mechanical ventilation system handles the air quality, the natural ventilation by window opening is expected to be a supportive measure. However, there is not enough measured data about how much air change is fulfilled by window opening. The article describes the evaluation of fresh air accessibility by window openings at six Finnish apartments. To understand the behaviour of air change, CO2 mass balance equation model was applied. The results of summer season clarified that the actual number of air changes are 085 to 1.54 times per hour with one-side opening. The CO2 mass balance model for apartments, which is a kind of tracer gas decay method, is an effective way to estimate the actual number of air changes without preventing occupants’ daily living. Since some buildings, such as residential, school, churches, are affected by the moisture problems, the management of moisture behaviour by both natural and mechanical ventilation is essential.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes the effects of climate change for Finland from the view of comprehensive security. The report examines both direct and indirect climate security risks as well as transition risks related to climate change mitigation. The report is based on previous research and expert interviews. Direct security risks refer to the immediate risks caused by the changing nature of natural hazards. These include the risks to critical infrastructure and energy systems, the logistics system, health and food security. Indirect security risks relate to the potential economic, political and geopolitical impacts of climate change. Climate change can affect global migration, increase conflict risk, and cause social tensions and inequality. Transition risks are related to economic and technological changes in energy transition, as well as political and geopolitical tensions and social problems caused by climate change mitigation policies. Reducing the use of fossil fuels can result in domestic and foreign policy tensions and economic pressure especially in locations dependent on fossil fuels. Political tension can also increase the risks associated with hybrid and information warfare. The security effects of climate change affect all sectors of society and the Finnish comprehensive security model should be utilized in preparing for them. In the short run, the most substantial arising climate change related security risks in Finland are likely to occur through indirect or transition risks. Finland, similar to other wealthy countries, has better technological, economic and institutional conditions to deal with the problems and risks posed by climate change than many other countries. However, this requires political will and focus on risk reduction and management.

Myrenås, Elin. Utvärdering av ålyngelutsättningar – Svenska väst- och sydkustområden. Department of Aquatic Resources, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.11hagsqss7.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this report, we examine experiences regarding cross-border transport infrastructure planning. Three different case studies were selected in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration; the proposed fixed HH link between Helsingborg and Helsingør; the proposed new Stockholm-Oslo rail connection; and the on-going attempts to improve the multi-modal corridor from Mo i Rana, via Hemavan and Umeå, across the Kvarken Strait to Vaasa. The case studies represent cross-border transport infrastructure planning projects in early phases across the Swedish-Danish border, Swedish-Norwegian border and the Swedish-Finnish border. A common feature is that they are being furthered by local and regional players in the respective areas.

Abstract:
Cross-border municipalities in Sweden and its Nordic neighbours are already well integrated. They have strong links and cooperate closely, in particular through cross-border committees involving local and regional authorities or through direct cooperation at the municipal level. However, issues hindering greater integration of cross-border municipalities and regions remain. This study focuses on three cases in the Swedish-Finnish, Swedish-Norwegian and Swedish-Danish border regions that face different topographical challenges. Through interviews with local and regional stakeholders, the main challenges with regard to furthering cross-border integration were identified. In this report, our research focuses on the following key questions: -What national support for urban-urban development across borders is needed by border towns and cities? -What coordination efforts (horizontal and vertical) are needed to achieve sustainable and green urban development in Nordic cross-border towns and cities? -What policy recommendations can be made based on the existing needs in border municipalities?
