Tuomi, Scott Lawrence. "Finnish art song for the American singer." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289889.

Full text
Abstract:
Art song teachers are constantly seeking new repertoire for their students. Many countries outside those commonly represented in American vocal studios (for instance Spain and Russia) have rich art song traditions which merit inclusion in the vocal studio. In this era of increased cultural awareness, many other areas of music education are seeking to explore these repertoires. However, many art songs are unable to be utilized because of the lack of resources in this country concerning their acquisition, identification, history, pronunciation and performance. Finland has a vast art song repertoire that is largely unexplored by American singers and teachers for the reasons mentioned above. A relatively new nation, Finland has a rich past which has remained a mystery to the west because of its close connection to the former Soviet Union. In addition, prior to the twentieth century, Finland had been under the control of foreign governments including those of Russia and Sweden since the Middle Ages. This document seeks to identify and examine Finnish art songs while providing background information regarding their history, development, and relevance to Finnish culture. In addition, tools for acquiring and performing Finnish art song are included to facilitate the inclusion of these songs in American vocal studios. Various sections include the development of the art song genre in Finland, the connection of songs to the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, and a brief examination of the Finno-Ugrian language group. Biographical information is provided for seven selected composers arranged in chronological order. A total of ten songs are analyzed from the selected composers and an English translation is also provided for each. In addition, a collection of appendices providing complete lists of published songs for each composer, a Finnish IPA pronunciation chart, contact information for Finnish music publishers and musical resources and a selected discography are included.

Saunders, Jessica Anne. "Songs of the Kalevala: art song inspired by the Finnish national epic." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5622.

Full text
Abstract:
The Kalevala, first published in 1835 by Elias Lönnrot, is the Finnish national epic and was fundamental in formalizing the Finnish language. It is a collection of stories Lönnrot collected over many years, pieced together to create a coherent epic. The stories in the Kalevala stem from an oral tradition, in which singing and music was integral. The stories in the epic contain many different characters, with Väinämöinen and his quest in to find a wife at the forefront. Other major characters discussed include Kullervo, Lemminkäinen, and Luonnotar. Extensive research exists about the history of the Kalevala itself, as well as its impact on music in Finland in the areas of pop music, symphonic music, choral music, and opera. However, little scholarship exists, regarding how the texts from the Kalevala have been incorporated into 19th and 20th century art song. The lack of research about the Kalevala in art song is due partly to the fact that no catalogue of related songs exists. Also, works based on the Kalevala are hard to obtain, as many are only available in manuscript form, or are found only in the Finnish National Archives. This essay aims to bridge the research gap on art song inspired by the Kalevala, while evaluating the works available in the context of their incorporation of the folk singing tradition that would have been used in the early performance of these Kalevala texts. Songs analyzed include works by Gabriel Linsén, Emil Kauppi, Jean Sibelius, Otto Kotilainen, and Erkki Melartin.

Tuomaala, Outi. "INTERNATIONALIZATION OF CONTEMPORARY ART : Case studies of three Finnish artists who have exhibited in Sweden." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Konstvetenskapliga institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-104625.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the internationalization of Finnish contemporary artists. The focus is on their exhibitions at contemporary art institutions in Sweden, covering the period 2004–2013. The aim is to investigate what makes these exhibitions to materialize. The main question is: How do different actors, networks, collaborations, and the field of artistic production look like when art is exported for exhibition purposes from Finland to Sweden? Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory and the Uppsala internationalization process model are used as the theoretical framework. Information is collected via interviews with three Finnish artists and three Swedish curators. The main result is that the artists do not actively impact the internationalization process themselves. Rather, the internationalization occurs through an international network of professionals, some acting on behalf of the artists, and some acting in their own interests. The main driving factor for internationalization is that the Finnish art market is small. Consequently, young contemporary artists are oriented internationally. For internationalization to occur, the artists must be available to foreign curators through the international networks. Finland is aware of this and promotes international art contacts through the foundation Frame Visual Art Finland. Important contact surfaces, where curators can learn about the artists, are art events, like European art biennials.

Abstract:
This essay looks at memorials and monuments raised in Finland dedicated to the civil war 1918 from both the red and the white side. The earliest memorials are from 1918 and the newest one from 1964. The difference between the two sides and the change over time is looked at through a few chosen monuments and memorials analyzed using semiotics and reception aesthetics. The use of symbols is extensive throughout the period, but the form they take, as well as their connotation, change over time, depending on the political context they are created in. They are created with different aims.

Hedlund, Jutta, and Karla Mattero. "When product attributes are not enough: A study of a Finnish cosmetics brand on the Swedish market." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-355038.

Full text
Abstract:
The predominating theories on non-product-related attributes stretch only so far to explain why some brands do not manage to succeed on foreign markets where the product needs are essentially similar to their domestic markets. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to cast new light on the theoretical field of non-product-related attributes, by unveiling which non-product- related attributes affect consumer brand preferences on similar markets. This is done by studying consumer expectations on cosmetics brands in general and brand attitudes towards a Finnish cosmetics brand, on the Swedish market. The results suggest that most of the non-product-related attributes that are covered by predominating theories are still relevant for the formation of consumer preferences, but that new important attributes have also emerged. It was also found that the level of importance varies from attribute to attribute, and that some factors affect consumer preferences more than others. The findings serve as a basis for re-evaluating and expanding the theory of non-product- related attributes, and can help brands to succeed on similar markets.

Kytölahti, Anna-Reetta. "“No wonder I went into the wall” : How burnout narratives are constructed in Finnish and Swedish media." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Institutionen för konst, kultur och kommunikation (K3), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-43829.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the existing literacy of how mental health is portrayed in news media. The topic has been of interest to many scholars, mostly focusing on depression, schizophrenia, and mental health in general. In the past couple of years, a new phenomenon has gained attention and space in media: burnout, that is, a state of mental and physical exhaustion caused by chronic, usually work-related, stress. However, burnout has so far only been included in media studies as one aspect among many, thus arguing for its worth as a specific subject of a study. Using the method of critical narrative analysis, this thesis delves into news articles published in Swedish and Finnish mainstream media, investigating the personal stories of individuals who had experienced burnout and asking whose stories are getting told in media as well as how these influence the public image of burnout. Three common narratives and two core discourses were identified in the data: ‘the narrative of a lesson learned’, ‘the narrative as an exemplum’, ‘the conversion narrative’, ‘discourse of shame and stigma’, and ‘discourse of the individual in charge of their own destiny’. These portray burnout as a life-altering experience, where it is the individual who is expected to make the necessary changes in their life, rather than critiquing the working culture. Furthermore, the narratives exclusively portray the burnout experiencers as white and middle-class, thus raising a question of relatability. Since burnout has not been extensively studied as a topic of its own before, this thesis provides a starting point, but further research with different geographical focus and with different methods is needed to form a more complete picture of how burnout narratives are constructed in media.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This Bachelor´s thesis examines Bror Marklunds (1907-1977) workshop, as a museum created around one person and how a museum creates authenticity in a studio museum like this one. Marklund was one of the most merited sculptor artists in Sweden around the 40´s, until the 70´s. In the workshop, that arose through a donation from the artist himself before he passed in 1977, and a reception from the municipality, the curatorial approach has been my main focus. The thesis also contains a discussion about the commitment that the municipality of Örnsköldsvik takes in conjunction with the donation. Who has the right of deciding about who will be shown to the public as our cultural heritage? In this situation it´s a decision made of both the artist himself and the municipality. The material consists of the workshop and all the interior as it´s organised today and of archive photographs and texts. The material has been examined with the method observation to analyse how the gallery space is staged today. Photographs from the workshop´s early days, placed on the original location, and from the gallery space as it was staged at the opening in 1980 has been compered with the staging of today. The workshop has gone through a transformation from being a working space of an artist to a gallery room with the aim to show the artists development phases and working methods. So, what happens with the authenticity of a museum of a one-person over time? From what curatorial decisions does the visitor get the feeling of authenticity in a one-person museum? The thesis examines why and how we keep the artist alive through his works. The question remains – Does he exist among his sculptures?

Abstract:

Lehtinen, Don. "When Tweets Are Embedded, Who Gains the Upper Hand? : The Discursive Power Struggle on Finnish Digital News Articles before the 2019 Parliamentary Election." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, JMK, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-194180.

Full text
Abstract:
This Master’s thesis focuses on the discursive power struggle between politicians and journalists on Finnish digital news articles where the politician’s tweets are embedded or quoted in using multimodal discourse analysis. Embedded and quoted tweets are one of the premier links between Twitter and digital news platforms but have for the most part been left out of the field of discourse analysis. This research will try to fill that gap, focusing on a time period of one month before the 2019 parliamentary election in Finland. The research material consists of 18 articles from two of the biggest digital news platforms in Finland, Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat. They are analyzed using Machin and Mayr’s seven-part scheme for critical discourse analysis, focusing on the embedded and quoted tweets in relation to the text’s discourse, and also the intertwined textual and the visual sides of the articles. The analysis shows that in most articles, the discourse portrayed in the tweets is not challenged by the journalist, meaning that the politicians most often come on top in the discursive power struggle. The analysis also displays that there are multiple ways of challenging the discourse, but they are seldom used in the power struggle. In conclusion, as the tweets’ discourses often go unchallenged, both the politicians and Twitter as a platform have arguably disproportionate power to influence both the discourse on digital news platforms, as well as the readers of those.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine the censorship that the social media platform Instagram exerts over pictures of female nudes, and whether the body type of the women depicted is a factor in how the censorship is carried through. This is executed by making a comparative picture analysis of eight nude photos published on Instagram, four of which are allowed on the platform and four which are not, and have therefore been deleted. The bodies are analysed, and aspects of how they are depicted which are related to the Instagram Community Guidelines, and furthermore if the body depicted conforms to the norms of our contemporary beauty standards and “the Male Gaze”, are reviewed. This fundamental part of the study isbased on the formal analysis and the methods of semiotics. Furthermore, the history of the nude in art, the body norms and ideals of our contemporary society, the Instagram Community rules and Guidelines and the artists are presented briefly. The discussion which has been carried through is based on the analysis and thesis of how female nudes of the Western art cannon have been received, judged, divided into categories and censored to answer the central inquires of the essay. In conclusion, this essay finds how pictures of nude women on Instagram are received, judged, and censored differently depending on whether they fit into the norms of beauty and conform to the male gaze. Hence, the rules of Instagram are found to have been followed through with double standard and bias.
