Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the three violin teachers. In the result, their approach to music theory in violin teaching is categorized into four themes: The violin teachers definitions of music theory, To work with music theory in violin teaching, choice of music theoretical lesson contentand Difficulties with integrating music theory in violin teaching. The results reveals that there is differences between the teachers' approaches. However, all the teachers reported that they emphasize note acquisition and the importance of combining music theory with playing the violin. Full textThe purpose of this study is to gain a general insight into how a few violin teachers work and what printed material they use when teaching beginners. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six teachers employed at municipal music schools. Of interest, it may be observed that a few violin books are particularly popular, yet also that all interviewed subjects vary their material, while sometimes creating their own. There appear to be several reasons for this. First, the teachers prefer to teach new concepts, while second, they also strive to develop as professionals instead of repeating identical concepts, thereby risking stagnation.

Full textThe purpose of this paper is to increase knowledge and understanding of the didactic choices violin pedagogues can do to promote students’ motivation to play and practice. Apropos this end, I have conducted interviews with four violin pedagogues. The theoretical basis is a socio-cultural perspective, taking a holistic approach to the students learning. It is a perspective in which the social aspect is emphasized, in which the tutor is regarded as a prime facilitator in learning. The result shows that the four violin pedagogues believe that the social aspect is most important for student motivation, so the teaching is perceived as meaningful. They also believe that parents can influence students' motivation and that practice is an important factor for students to develop. Development in turn, creates motivation and exercise routines with the help of parents. However, interviewees do not see it as problematic if a student does not always find it fun to play immediately, as learning to make music can create happiness in the future. Furthermore, the results show that the interviewees think that there are no easy answers and not just one way to teach. All students and teachers are unique and it is therefor important to adopt a flexible approach and have an open mind about creating a motivating learning environment.

Full textThe main question in this study is “how do violin teachers understand the meaning of genre width for students’ interest of music and development?” How does the music school answer to the musical evolution? Through the paradigm shift during the 20th century, the traditional music culture developed into a more opened-minded musical perspective. In order to answer this question, I asked four educated violin teachers through qualitative interviews. All of the teachers had work experience. The result of the study shows that teachers experience that the student’s music identity is a much more broad than before, which means that the selection of tunes are very important. It is not easy to choose tunes since the students think it is important to play music from their own youth culture. These tunes are often not appreciated by the teachers but very important in order to prohibit students from losing interest. In the conclusion, I compared the interviewed teachers with earlier research in the subject. – The comparison shows that the teachers’ word is confirmed by the science and vice versa. On the other hand, my original question has changed. It is not the genre width itself that is important – the important thing is the choice of tune, in relation to the student’s youth culture. Therefore, teacher education must provide future teachers with knowledge in all genres, to be able to comply with each individual student’s wishes. According to my conclusion we need to refine the music school – the students have to be able to play their favourite tunes.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to find out how violin teachers work with improvisation in classical music education. What factors affect the teacher's view of improvisation and the use of improvisation are presented in the study. Interviews of seven violin teachers who are working as violin teachers and musicians are reported in the study. The interviews have been analysed through a cultural-historical perspective and were issued as a thematic analysis that includes teachers' backgrounds, education, essential tasks as teachers and use of improvisation in teaching. This study reveals how teachers' backgrounds affect their interpretations and use of improvisation in teaching. Vygotsky's cultural-historical perspective is followed and stated by the report of his books and articles. Vygotsky's ideas about how civilization constantly affects the mental characteristics and behaviour of man are reported. Improvisation's use is very wide and used in poetry, dance, theatre and music. Different music genres based on improvisation have been investigated in the study. During the 20th century improvisation disappeared from music education and tinted down in the musical performances. The elements, which have influenced the disappearance of improvisation in classical music and theories about these facts, are highlighted in this study. Four out of seven violin teachers use improvisational moments in the classroom, but there was no connection between the use of improvisation in teaching as well as performance and the background of the teachers. The violin teachers who are interested in improvisation as phenomena and subjects for personal reasons use improvisation in their teaching.

Full textIn this study, I will examine how violin teachers with roots in folk music teach, and if there are any areas which they prioritize and why. I chose to make a qualitative interview with five interviewees. My goal was to choose violin teachers who had studied at a colleges of music, but also with as varied a background as possible. I have set interview responses against some classical violin methods. I have not reached any new perspective or angles in folk music teaching. Instead, I see similarities between the interviewees’ teaching and the classical methods. The aim for the methods may vary. In folk music, ear training is used among all ages. The interviewees think it is important that students enjoy playing the violin and to make music. It is easier to understand and grasp the music if you begin with ear training.

The study´s research questions concern how do violin teachers represent their view of bow technique? And how do violin teachers design their teaching in bow technique? The study is qualitative, and data has been collected through semi structured interviews with four different violin teachers at music and cultural schools. The theoretical starting point of the study is social semiotic perspective. The interviews were recorded by audio and video and were then transcribe and analyzed. The analysis was conducted with tools from the chosen theoretical framework. The themes presented are string techniques such as tone formation, bow technique such as posture, bow technique such as instrument technology, material resources in teachingandbodily and sounding resources in teaching. The result shows many differences but also similarities in the interviewed violin teachers' statements, but all highlight the significance of the bow technique in teaching and its function. In the final chapter of the study, the result is discussed in relation to previous literature and research, and to the social semiotic perspective of the study. The themes presented are teaching from a social semiotic perspectiveand bow technique linked to posture and tone formation. The method discussion, the importance of work and continued research is also mentioned.
