<p>Syftet med det här examensarbetet är att undersöka hur några flerkulturella elever, i skolår sex, upplever att deras religiösa högtider uppmärksammas i sin mångkulturella skola. Vi vill även undersöka hur viktigt eleverna upplever att det är, att deras klasskamrater får lära sig om hans/hennes kulturs traditioner och vice versa. Våra frågor är följande:</p><p>• Hur upplever eleverna att deras religiösa högtider uppmärksammas i skolan?</p><p>• Hur viktigt upplever eleverna att deras klasskamrater får lära sig om hans/hennes kulturs traditioner och vice versa? Vilka argument anger de?</p><p>• Finns det någon skillnad mellan katolikernas och muslimernas åsikter angående att lära sig om andra elevers religiösa högtider?</p><p>För att få svar på frågorna genomförde vi intervjuer med fem elever från en mångkulturell skola. Ingen av eleverna har fått berätta om hur de firar sina högtider hemma. De har heller inte fått mycket annan kunskap om sina högtider än genom religionsboken. Två av de fem eleverna tycker att både de muslimska och de kristna högtiderna borde uppmärksammas mer i skolan. Muslimerna tyckte att det var viktigare än katolikerna att lära sig om andra religioners traditioner.</p>

Abstract:

Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur praktiserande muslimska elever i den svenska skolan firar ramadan, och på vilket sätt pedagoger och muslimska elever upplever att skolprestationen påverkas av ramadanfirandet. Forskningen visar på att fastan medför fysiologiska svårigheter vilket vi vill fördjupa oss i. Vi vill även ta reda på om pedagoger och praktiserande muslimska elever upplever att det finns annan problematik kopplat till ramadan. Syftet besvarar vi med hjälp av en kvalitativ undersökningsmetod i form av en intervjustudie. Intervjuerna bestod av sex pedagoger och sex elever, formen på intervjuerna var både strukturerade och semi-strukturerad. I teoribakgrunden framgår det tillexempel vilka konsekvenser som kan uppstå i skolan när elever fastar en hel månad. Andra betydelsefulla delar i teoribakgrunden är islams mångfald och synen på islam i Sverige samt hur firandet av ramadan går till för muslimer i Sverige. Resultatet visar på att de muslimska eleverna firar ramadan på liknande sätt. De fastar under dygnets ljusa timmar, och efter solnedgången samlas familjen för en gemensam måltid. Fastan är en sympati med de fattiga vilket är en viktig del av religionen och eleverna utför olika solidaritetshandlingar. I resultatet framkommer det att eleverna var trötta, okoncentrerade, ineffektiva och hade humörsvängningar under ramadan. De intervjuade eleverna anser att skolan var mycket tuffare under fastemånaden. Pedagogerna berättar att ledigheten kring slutfesten bayram upplevs som ett återkommande problem. Intervjuade pedagoger och elever önskar ett landsomfattande beslut angående beviljad ledighet vid slutfesten samt ökad kunskap om högtiden ramadan. Abstract:

Syftet med denna studie är att jämföra hur Dagens Nyheter respektive Aftonbladet rapporterade om de fängslade svenska journalisterna i Etiopien. Martin Schibbye och Johan Persson greps den 1 juli 2011 i Ogadenregionen i östra Etiopien efter att illegalt ha tagit sig in i landet med hjälp av den terrorstämplade gerillan ONLF. Händelsen fick stor uppmärksamhet i svenska medier. Vi ville med vår undersökning studera om morgontidningar, i vårt fall Dagens Nyheter, tar efter kvällstidningarnas sätt att rapportera om stora händelser. Vi valde ut åtta artikelsidor eller uppslag ur de båda tidningar att analysera och formulerade följande frågeställningar: Hur presenterades nyheterna kring Johan Persson och Martin Schibbyes tillfångatagande, rättegång, dom och frigivning i Dagens Nyheter respektive Aftonbladet, i de artikelsidor och uppslag som vi valde ut? Vad finns det för likheter och skillnader i de artikelsidor och uppslag vi valt ut från Dagens Nyheter respektive Aftonbladet gällande tabloidisering? Utifrån dessa frågeställningar konstruerade vi en kvalitativ textanalys med kvantitativa inslag där vi ställde vi frågor till texterna som vi hade formulerat utifrån begreppet tabloidisering, för att undersöka om texterna var tabloidiserade. Resultatet visade att det fanns klara tendenser till tabloidsering i de sidor och uppslag vi analyserade i Dagens Nyheter. Detta resultat förklarade vi främst med tidningsbranschens ekonomiska situation. Vi fann även att det fanns stora likheter, både text- och bildmässigt i de undersökta tidningarna. Detta resultat förklarade vi huvudsakligen med medielogiken.

Abstract:

This study is about the work around festivals and traditions that takes place in multicultural preschools. The purpose of this study is to describe and reflect upon the work around festivals and traditions in multicultural preschools from the view of five preschool teachers who are active in their profession. The purpose is also to investigate which festivals and traditions that are given attention at preschool and for what reason according to the preschool teachers. The method of research chosen in this study is qualitative in the form of individual interviews with the intention of obtaining and interpreting the descriptions and reflections of the informants around the subject. The results will be analyzed from an intercultural perspective. The results show that all investigated preschools celebrate the traditional Swedish festivals Christmas, St. Lucia’s day, Easter and Midsummer, and that these festivals take up lots of space in terms of time and labor. At some of the preschools attention was also given to other festivals from different faiths and cultures out of diversity and a more globalized perspective. The results also revealed that all of the preschool teachers were positive to giving attention to festivals from other faiths and cultures. It was considered to bring an increased understanding and respect for differences between people. It appeared that an operation with increased cultural features would result in the confrontation of some difficulties.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the geological and morphological features around ancient city of Zeugma. To achieve this, a geological map of Zeugma excavation site is prepared<br>an aerial photographic survey and morphological analyses are conducted on a broader area. Additionally, the biggest ancient quarry in the study area is investigated. In the close vicinity of Zeugma, four lithologies which are, from bottom to top, clayey limestone, thick bedded limestone, chalky limestone and cherty limestone are identified. A major fault with a vertical throw of 80 m is mapped in the area. Geological survey reveals that the excavation site is located within the chalky limestone and the rock tombs are carved within the thick bedded limestone. In the aerial photographic survey, Firat River is classified into 4 morphological classes which are river, island, flood plain and basement. The change among these classes is investigated between 1953 and 1992. The results reveal that there is no considerable variation in the position of the river channel and margins of flood plain within 39 years. The major change is observed in the islands that are built within the flood plain. Testing the elevation of Gaziantep and Firat formations boundary using the relief map, investigating the visibility of selected points in the area, predicting the source area for the water supply, and evaluating the nature of the ancient route, constitute the morphological analysis carried out in this study. However, these analyses are not studied in detail and should be considered as the first attempts for more detailed morphological analyses.

Abstract:

This study investigates literary representations of refugees in contemporary German literature. Specifically, it analyzes the autobiography Ich komm auf Deutschland zu (2016) written by a Syrian refugee, Firas Alshater, who arrived in Germany in 2013, and the auto-fictional novel Ohrfeige (2016) by the German-Iraqi author Abbas Khider, who sought asylum in Germany in 2000. Both authors write from a transcultural point of view which challenges the definition of German culture and its ostensible dividing lines. As refugees themselves, these transnational authors have created works that interact aesthetically with contemporary German and European asylum and migration law, while vividly portraying the affective aspects of flight, trauma, and resettlement for those who manage to reach Germany. Both authors make use of irony, satire, and parody, which turn their works into aesthetic interventions that bring together social and political debates surrounding the topic of refugees in modern Germany. Each oeuvre defies the representation of refugees as victims and cultural outsiders. The texts expose ways in which fear and anxiety construct images of refugees as threatening and by which they are relegated to the margins of society. Through Alshaters and Khiders work, readers may question the imagined boundaries of the nation-state and reconsider notions of belonging. The humor embedded in their writing teases out tensions, contradictions, and resonances across time and space. Particularly, the persistent desire to look to ethnicity as a presumed guarantor of Germany’s collective self is challenged. Alshater’s humoristic-ironic style as well as his application of allusion and imagery and Khider’s employment of parody expose national and cultural ambiguity. By humanizing the term “ethnicity,” which is primarily viewed as a public identity, the authors stress the inclusion of a personal component, pointing to a common human need for recognition. Readers of these two works are invited to untether themselves from a singular national focus and instead view Germany as a dynamic imagined community - a moveable construct that will continue to evolve as events that occur in one place of the world do not stay contained within borders of nation states drawn on maps.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Central Eastern Northern European Studies, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) has become an indispensable metrology tool for nanoscale surface characterization. Today, research and industry demand faster and more accurate metrology and these demands must be met expediently. Traditional AFM cantilevers and associated actuators (i.e. piezoelectric) are limited in regards to actuation speed and resonance frequency presenting the user with an undesired trade-off of speed versus resolution. Based on a pre-existing technology known as the FIRAT (Force Sensing Integrated Readout and Active Tip) AFM probe, this work aims to remedy actuation and response issues by implementing a cantilever-on-cantilever probe as well as a novel seesaw probe. Both cases implement electrostatic actuation, eliminating the need for piezoelectrics while demonstrating large - micron scale - actuation and sensitive displacement detection. These new probe designs can potentially demonstrate a wide bandwidth frequency response (e.g. 100 kHz) ideal for high-speed video-rate imaging. Unlike traditional AFM cantilevers, this is realized by mechanically coupling two physically separate structures to provide a soft resonator sensor atop a stiff actuator structure. Common surface-micromachining techniques are utilized to solve the logistical challenge of fabricating these stacked structures. By manipulating the viscous damping and mechanical mode coupling it becomes feasible to attain the aforementioned desired dynamic characteristics.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on quantitative subsurface and mechanical properties imaging potential of AFM probes. Extensive modeling of AFM probes are presented for thorough understanding of capabilities and limitations of current techniques, these models are verified by various experiments, and different methods are developed by utilizing force-sensing integrated read-out active tip (FIRAT), which is an active AFM probe with broad bandwidth. For quantitative subsurface imaging, a 3-D FEA model of AFM tip-sample contact is developed and this model can simulate AFM tip scan on nanoscale-sized buried structures. FIRAT probe, which is active and broadband, is utilized for interaction forces imaging during intermittent contact mode and mechanical characterization capability of this probe is investigated. It is shown that probe dynamics, stiffness, stiffness ambiguity, assumed contact mechanics, and noise are important parameters for the accuracy of mechanical properties imaging. An active tip control mechanism is introduced to limit contact forces during intermittent contact mode. In addition to these, a combined ultrasonic AFM and interaction forces imaging method is developed and modeled to solve the reduced elasticity measurement sensitivity on composite materials. This method is capable of imaging a broader range of elasticity on combination samples such as metal nanoparticles in polymers at nanoscale.

Abstract:

Intermittent contact mode atomic force microscopy has been widely employed for simultaneous topography imaging and material characterization. The work in the literature includes both qualitative and quantitative methods. Regular AFM cantilevers are generally used in these methods, yet these cantilevers come with certain limitations. These limitations result from the very nature of cantilever probes. They are passive force sensors with insufficient damping. This prevents having active and complete control on tip-sample forces, causing sample damage and inaccurate topography measurement. Ideally, an AFM probe should offer high bandwidth to resolve interaction forces, active control capability for small interaction force and stable operation, and sufficient damping to avoid transient ringing which causes undesired forces on the sample. Force sensing integrated readout and active tip (FIRAT) probe offers these properties. A special imaging mode, time-resolved interaction force (TRIF) mode imaging can be performed using FIRAT probe for simultaneous topography and material property imaging. The accuracy of topography measurement of samples with variations in elastic and adhesive properties is investigated via numerical simulations and experiments. Results indicate that employing FIRAT probe's active tip control (ATC) capability during TRIF mode imaging provides significant level of control over the tip-sample forces. This improves the accuracy of topography measurement during simultaneous material property imaging, compared to conventional methods. Moreover, Active tip control (ATC) preserves constant contact time during force control for stable contact while preventing loss of material property information such as elasticity and adhesive forces.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates depictions in the Kurdish media (Rudaw and Firat News Agency (ANF)) of mass violence perpetrated against Kurdish civilians in northern and northeastern Syria – an area known to Kurds as Rojava – in recent years. Articles from two media organizations were subject to mixed-method text analysis (quantitative and qualitative) to uncover how mass violence was portrayed. The theory of framing in the media is used to show how violence is committed and what role ideology plays in this process. It is subsequently used in order to uncover commonly used frames for the roles played by various actors involved in mass violence. Hence, a comparison is made between the contents of the two media institutions. The results primarily relate to the role of ideology in the coverage of mass violence by the selected Kurdish media outlets, which are affiliated with two major Kurdish political parties, one left-leaning and one right-leaning. Findings revealed different aspects of mass violence, governed principally by nationalist and partisan orientations. Nationalist agendas played a significant role in Rudaw’s content and a smaller one in ANF’s. Partisan agendas had roughly the same magnitude in both, and the two outlets clashed politically but met nationalistically in many areas. The research questions were addressed through a content analysis of tens of stories disseminated by both Kurdish media organizations during the same time-space.
