Tree-ring fire scars, tree ages, historical photographs, and historical surveys indicate that, for centuries, fire played different ecological roles across gradients of elevation, forest, and fire regimes in the Taos Valley Watersheds. The southeastern United States was historically characterized by open forests featuring fire-adapted species before land-use change. We compared tree composition and densities of historical tree surveys (1802 to 1841) to contemporary tree surveys, with the application of a similarity metric, in the Coastal Plain ecological province of Mississippi, southeastern USA. We detected the boundary between historical pine and oak-pine open forests and differentiated historical and current forests. In the Coastal Plain, historical open forests converted from fire-tolerant longleaf pine (Pinus palustris)

Fire detection systems are designed to discover fires and allow the safe evacuation of occupants as well as protecting the safety of emergency response personnel. This paper describes the design and development of a fire detection and alert system. Temperature and flame sensors are used to indicate the occurrence of fire. This work consists of two parts, which are transmitter and receiver, both using ZigBee wireless technology. Arduino Uno is used as the microcontroller at the transmitter part to control the sensor nodes and give alert when over temperature and flame are detected. At the trans

In 1841, a select committee proposed that the houses of parliament at Westminster, which were being rebuilt in the aftermath of the fire of 1834, be decorated with fresco paintings and that Ludwig I of Bavaria's patronage of the arts be used for guidance. Both recommendations were surprising, for Britain had neither any tradition of public painting, nor any obvious ties with the south German state. This article explains why the committee was so sensible to Ludwig's example, and what it hoped to achieve by introducing fresco painting into Britain. The scheme was to serve not only as the means o

Chromocupography is a photo-etching technique developed in 19th-century Portugal under the supervision of chemist José Júlio Rodrigues (1843-1923). Very scarce literature is associated with the process, and it doesn’t seem to have been widely used after being made public. At the time, the technique was presented as a variant of Charles Eckstein’s (1840-1913) method, working in Hague, Holland. Eckstein’s technique consisted of hatching the lithograph stone with very fine delicate multiple-point needles to produce tone variations. Chromocupography substitutes the stone for a copper plate and the

Abstract The subject of this article is the fire history of seven contiguous national and provincial parks in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, four to the east of the continental divide and three to the west. Seven centuries of time-since-fire data were combined and arrayed in three sets: all seven parks together, then the east-side and west-side groups separately. Fire cycles were estimated by four different methods: two of them statistical and two deterministic. Statistical evidence of distinct changes in fire regime, always toward a lower burning rate, was uncovered, with transitions in 1760 a

It suggests that British children's novels emphasise the horror of bushfires and the human struggle involved in conquering them. In contrast, Australian-authored children's fictions represent less anthropocentric understandings of the environment. New attitudes toward the environment are made manifest in Australian women's fiction including J. M. Whitfield's ‘The Spirit of the Bushfire’ (

Waterston’s 1843 book is a pioneering text on physiological psychology. It attempts a nerve fibre connectionist account of association with electrical activity passing through the equivalent of ‘nerve nets’. It describes a spatial co-ordination system of visual, tactile and muscle nerve fibres with cerebral endings spatially arranged so as to map their peripheral body endings, and it postulates re-afferent paths and muscle length detectors. It describes hearing and voice as another coordinated nerve fibre system, and discusses the nature of loudness, pitch, musical scale, and timbre, with comp
