Abstract:

For almost sixty years the Reichstag fire of 27 February 1933 and the events that followed have been the subjects of historical inquiry. The criminal trial against those accused of starting the fire was held before the German Supreme Court, the Reichsgericht.<br>This thesis examines the conduct of the Reichsgericht during the Reichstagsbrandprozess of September to December 1933. It shows that the trial was conducted by an independent but conservative Supreme Court which managed the proceedings according to its own historical antecedents and precedents. The evidence is based on published government documents and other primary and secondary sources.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I argue that the question of ethics, despite claims to the contrary, is a central concern in Cormac McCarthy’s fiction. My principal contention, in this regard, is that an approach that is not reliant on conventional systems of meaning is needed if one is to engage effectively with the moral value of this writer’s oeuvre. In devising such an approach, I draw heavily on the ‘immoralist’ writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. The first chapter of the study contends that good and evil, terms central to conventional morality, do not occupy easily definable positions in McCarthy’s work. In the second chapter, the emphasis falls on the way in which language and myth’s mediation of reality informs choice. The final chapter focuses on the post-apocalyptic setting of The Road, in which normative systems of value are completely absent. It argues that, despite this absence, McCarthy presents a compassionate ethic that is able to find purchase in the harsh world depicted in the novel. Finally, then, this study argues that McCarthy’s latest novel, The Road, requires a reconsideration of the critical claim that his work is nihilistic and that it negates moral value.

Abstract:

By the mid-1970s, Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF) became one of the most commercially successful pop music bands in the world. Their dynamic sound thrilled listeners and their elaborate concerts captivated audiences. EWF stood out from other artists with their philosophical messages and their use of ancient Egyptian symbols and imagery in their visual art. The ancient Egyptian themes intrigued fans but drew criticism from others. This study examines the ancient Egyptian themes incorporated into the lyrics of the songs recorded by the band. This study also examines the ancient Egyptian symbols used in the EWF’s visual art, including album covers, music videos, and concerts. A content analysis was conducted to study the lyrics and identify themes related to ancient Egyptian spirituality. A content analysis was also used to study the visual art and decipher what the symbols may signify. This research was based on the premise that Earth, Wind & Fire used their artistry to be a positive influence. When the lyrics and visual art were examined, the researcher found that they both contain themes of ancient wisdom and universal truths. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that EWF’s mission was to raise the consciousness of the world, and the way people responded is an indication that the mission was accomplished. The findings also suggest that the negative criticism EWF has received is unjustifiable.

Abstract:

Aim and background The aim of this study was to reconstruct fire regimes/history of an extensive arid to semi-arid region of Western Australia for the last 40 years by studying temporal and spatial fire scar patterns using remote sensing in a Geographic Information System environment. Methods A fire history database was constructed, for the years 1973-2012 of an area of Western Australia between the Murchison and Minilya Rivers, of all bushfires greater than 1 ha that were visible from Landsat satellite imagery ranging from 30 – 60m ground resolution. The data was analysed to characterise a general bushfire regime for the region which included: mean and median size of fire scars; range and mean count of bushfire numbers; and the effect that land-systems, vegetation types/structures, land tenure and climate had on the bushfire regime. The 82 land-systems were grouped into 4 main land types and the 141 vegetation types were grouped into 7 vegetation groups and 7 vegetation structural groups. The percentages of areas burnt were calculated and a correlation coefficient was calculated between total area and total area burnt for each variable within the study area. Land tenure was divided into 3 types and two discrete areas in the northern study area were compared to determine if land tenure had an impact on fire regimes. To assess the effect climate had on the bushfire extent I calculated their correlation to both cumulative rainfall and mean maximum temperature. A generalised linear model was used to determine which climatic variables impacted on the bushfire regime. Results A total of 23.8% of the total study area burnt during the study period. The individual fire scars ranged from4000 km2. The frequency of fires ranged from 10-40+ years across the different vegetation types. The land type that burnt the most extensively in both the southern and northern study areas was Sandplains/coastal (southern — 16.6%; northern — 57%). The land type that burnt the least extensively in the southern study area was Alluvial/plains with eucalypts/claypans group (2.3%), and in the northern study area it was the Hills/mesas group (~1%). The Heathland vegetation (54%) burnt the most extensively in the southern study area and Hummock grassland (68%) in the northern. The northern study area had a greater variety of vegetation groups that burnt than the southern area (northern — 37; southern — 22). The Acacia Shrubland vegetation group contained the greatest number of fire fronts that stopped shortly after burning into this group. Only Shrub and Mallee structural groups burned in the southern study area (grass, tree, samphire shrub, chenopod shrub and bare did not burn); all structural groups except Mallee burnt in the northern study area. Two regions in the northern study area with structurally similar vegetation showed some differences in fire frequency when grazing activity by feral goats was restricted vs. unrestricted, though there was insufficient data for statistically relevant findings. The variables retained in the generalised linear models of fire extent were; rain in the previous two years to year of fire (positive relationship) and rain in the previous three years to fire (negative relationship) for the northern study area, and number of annual days over 35°C (positive relationship), rain in the year of fire (negative relationship) and rain in the three years prior to fire (positive relationship) in the southern study area. Conclusions Bushfire size distribution and frequency are comparable to other regimes in similar climates; however on average they tended to be larger. Infrequent, extensive (>4000 km2) bushfires can skew the statistics since the area burnt contributes to mean values to a greater degree as the individual fires get larger. Such large fires are strongly linked to 2 year antecedent above average rainfall episodes, especially in the northern study area and particularly when pluvial periods are followed by droughts and above-average temperatures. The extent of a bushfire is partially dependent on vegetation type and structure, and land-system. More research needs to be undertaken to see how much of an influence (if any) grazing practices leads to difference in bushfire regimes. Predicted future changes in climate may lead to more frequent and higher intensity bushfires in the study area. This research furthers the understanding of bushfire regimes in arid Western Australia. It also contributes to expanding current knowledge of bushfires in an arid Acacia shrubland ecosystem and it should improve predictions and management of bushfires in these extensive regions of Australia.

This thesis will present information on the economic feasibility of rehabilitating an older building into office and living space. Data will show that the outlined rehabilitation project can be carried out at a lower dollar cost than new construction for a comparable amount of useable floor space.The rehabilitation project outlined in this thesis had to meet the following criteria. The current owners proposed future use of the building. All proposed modifications to the structure had to meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation to take fullest advantage of the Tax Reform Act of 1976, and local building and zoning regulations. Rehabilitation of the building must provide the owner with enough income to completely off-set the total cost of the project within a ten year period. All of the proposed work on the building would have to meet the current owner's desire to retain as much of the building's original "character" while creating contemporary work/living space.<br>Department of Architecture

Abstract:

Fife coal-owners owned their workers houses and controlled the processes of housing provision and allocation. They were both employers and landlords. As a result the spheres of home and work were inextricably linked. This thesis examines the nature of the social relations arising from this "tied" relationship in the light of both local and national, political, economic and social developments, between 1870 and 1930. The themes of deference, paternalism, community, socialisation and social control, and the residual effects of pre-existing social relations, particularly pre-industrial relations of production, are explored. The empirical research concentrates upon the analysis of two coal companies in particular; the Fife Coal Company Ltd. and the Wemyss Coal Company. These companies operated coal mines in contrasting geographical locations; the former throughout inland west Fife and the latter along coastal south-east Fife. Each company built rows of colliers' houses in close proximity to the mines. At the beginning of the period housing for coal-miners was provided, not by speculative builders on the open market, but, by the coal-owners through their company architects and sub-contractors. Houses were provided as part of the employment contract as a means of attracting and maintaining the workforce. By the end of the period, the State, through the agency of local authorities, was the principal provider of working class housing in mining communities; coal companies had withdrawn from the housing market. The thesis attempts to explain this process in terms of changing social relations of production.

Search the library catalog for the location and call number.<br>Despite the immense popular and critical response given to the Harry Potter narrative and phenomenon, little has been written about the music for the Harry Potter films. I establish that the aesthetic differences that viewers perceive between the different Harry Potter films are largely due to the musical approaches of composers John Williams, Patrick Doyle, and Nicholas Hooper over the course of four director/composer collaborations for the first five films. This study provides a rare opportunity to examine the work of different composers for a continuing narrative. Moreover, when we explore how music is used in varied ways within the films, we see how each musical approach shapes film visuals into the narrative that the filmmakers sought to convey; when the music changes, the story changes. Music creates the geographic, cultural, and temporal landscapes that draw us in to Harry's 'muggle' and magical worlds. Music defines the way we perceive Harry's emotional experiences of love, joy, loss, and death, and also defines the philosophical perspectives on the nature of evil and its conquest. Sometimes, the music provides clues to the mystery long before visuals and dialogue address them, and musical relationships (with visuals and within the music itself) allow us to perceive the properties and powers of magic and humanity that may otherwise transpire unseen. Music also plays a role in the types of humor that are represented in the films--from socially-sanctioned transgressions, to macabre, to bawdy, deadpan, and caricature. Abstract:

La thèse se donne comme objectif l’appréhension des catégories de la négativité dans le texte métafictionnel en tant qu’une force libératrice et transformatrice qui, à la fois, assure la survie du texte malgré son aspect fragmentaire et multidirectionnel, et pousse le lecteur à s’engager dans une quête de l’insensé et du paradoxal qui n’embarque pas sur le nihilisme ‘négatif’, mais aboutit plutôt à la découverte de la face cachée constructive de la négativité, qu’est l’autocréation. Pour mener un tel projet, un assemblage littéraire de cinq œuvres disparates- Pale Fire par Vladimir Nabokov, Coming Soon!!! par John Barth, Waterland par Graham Swift , Gerald’s Party par Robert Coover et White Noise par Don Delillo- sert de terrain propice au travail de la négativité qui consiste essentiellement à démystifier et détruire des systèmes clos d’origine métaphysique et construire de nouveaux systèmes de valeurs, sans aucune prétention ou aspiration à la transcendance et la suprématie. Pour comprendre l’économie d’un tel texte, on va suivre trois étapes dont chacune correspond à une partie de la thèse : « L’éthique du texte métafictionnel », « L’esthétique du texte métafictionnel » et « La politique du texte métafictionnel ». La première partie s’engage à dégager l’ensemble d’impératifs éthiques qui mettent en œuvre la force de négativité. La deuxième partie s’engage à étudier les techniques de narration et d’écriture mises en œuvre pour activer les impératifs éthiques. La troisième partie s’engage à explorer la faisabilité et les limites des principes que l’on peut se construire en s’appropriant la négativité du texte. Le processus mis en œuvre dans les trois parties de la thèse est marqué par un combat perpetuel qui démontre l’aspect fallacieux et artificiel des construits et prouve, paradoxalement, notre incapacité de s’en passer pour exister<br>The dissertation addresses the challenge to think the power of negativity and its ultimate constructive objective. It launches an enterprise, both at the textual and extratexual levels, that requires the individual to destroy and create at once, without any pretention to establish an everlasting system that dictates the encoding and decoding of thoughts and perception and management of cognitive, bodily and everyday life needs. Such an enterprise is based on the consideration of a literary assemblage of five novels: Vladimir Nabokov’s Pale Fire, John Barth’s Coming Soon!!!, Graham Swift’s Waterland, Robert Coover’s Gerald’s Party and Don Delillo’s White Noise. It demonstrates that the text is governed by an economy that does not embark on « negative » nihilism; it is rather an economy that transforms the unproductive forms (abyss, loss, spectre, madness, excess, death) into a capacity for resistance and a creative departure. It is an economy that sustains the text and prevents it from collapsing, through a set of ethical imperatives, a poetics of self-creation and a politics whose objective is not to resolve the paradoxes underlying the text. Throughout the three part of the dissertation, there is a continuous struggle to unveil the constructs and to explain the rationale behind our unavoidable need for them to keep going

The causes of the retardation of the infant mortality decline in the latter part of the nineteenth century in England has been the subject of debate amongst historians and medical professionals for the last hundred years. The varieties of explanations that have been offered tend to only indicate the overwhelming complexity ofthe question. This thesis examines the issues surrounding the infant mortality decline in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in five English urban areas. It appears far more plausible to consider that the national figures only represent an average of a multitude of local circumstances and it is only by reference to these that a viable explanation for the infant mortality decline can be detected.
