Abstract We examined fire and weather records for areas of the western United States for the period 1970-1984 to determine the effects of simultaneous wildfire occurrence on fire suppression efforts. Burning conditions were accounted for by use of short strings of fires which involved simultaneous suppression efforts. These strings were matched with closely preceding isolated fires to form matched sets, which were used to examine the relative effects of simultaneous fire occurrence. Fires were predominantly lightning-caused, and within matched sets they showed little difference in burning cond

The Shoreline Position Trend Report summarizes the results of data collected in 2017 through 2022 along the ocean-facing shoreline of Fire Island National Seashore in addition to data collected in 2007 through 2017. Data sets include a spatial depiction of annual shoreline position as well as statistical analysis describing annual and 5-year, and 15-year changes, all following the model presented in Psuty et al. (2022b). Generally, the largest vectors of shoreline position change were produced by natural events such as storms and by human-induced cultural events such as beach nourishment or dr

Abstract:
This paper studies firm-level factors shaping the enforcement of financial reporting regulation on private firms and proposes bank lending as a particularly important one. Our tests are based on a rare combination of data sets, which allows us to construct unique measures of misreporting, notably in the form of underreporting of debt. We observe that private firms with bank debt are more likely to file mandatory financial reports and less likely to file information with irregularities. While we also find evidence that the need for bank financing can induce firms to misreport, this concern is m

Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) is a high-elevation conifer of western North America. Its nutritious cones are forage for the federally threatened grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), Clark?s nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana), red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), and numerous other subalpine species. It is a pioneer species in harsh, exposed subalpine zones, creating microclimates that help other conifers establish, such as subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa). However, substantial damage from a nonnative pathogen, white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola), unprecedented mountain pine beetle (Den

This paper studies tax evasion in the form of under-reported wages in Ecuador using microdata from a combination of electronic billing and personal income tax returns filed in 2017. Bringing together this novel combination of data, the study applies the standard method Pissarides and Weber (1989) used to estimate the under-reporting of income by comparing public- and private-sector employees. The results demonstrate empirically that under-reporting of income in private-sector employees is between 7 and 9 percent of their income, which translates to an estimated 3 percent of unregistered GDP. Abstract:
This paper analyses the effect of the expected credit loss model under IFRS 9 on relationship lending in Spain. We document that relationship exclusivity between a bank and a firm has a positive effect on the growth of credit. However, this positive effect is significantly reduced after implementation of IFRS 9. We estimate that in 2018 the negative impact of IFRS 9 on relationship lending led to a reduction in credit to Spanish non-financial firms of 2.8% of their total outstanding credit, suggesting a sizeable effect on the availability of credit. For borrowers with Stage 1 loans, we show th

Data collection protocols and a common database have been developed to ensure complete and consistent collection of USM calibration data, logs files and documentation of test piping layout. By using an Excel input table spreadsheet, with instructions on how to organize the collected data, users can easily input data from multiple types of ultrasonic meters. The database retains the original calibration and log file data and processes the test results into standardized velocity and speed of sound reports. The pandemic hit the Colombian economy as hard as other countries. Using a novel Business Pulse Survey, this paper tests the effect of government support and COVID-19 cases on firms performance. A one-standard-deviation increase in government support (in periods in which the pandemics intensity was average) increased the percentage of firms reporting normal operations by 4.8 percent. Political demonstrations in spring 2021, however, reduced the percentage by 13 percent each month they lasted. Firms' financial distress also counters the impact of government support, suggesting the need to ease
