Increasing Australian bush-fire frequencies over the last decade has indicated a major climatic change in coming future. Understanding such climatic change for Australian bush-fire is limited and there is an urgent need of scientific research, which is capable enough to contribute to Australian society. Frequency of bush-fire carries information on spatial, temporal and climatic aspects of bush-fire events and provides contextual information to model various climate data for accurately predicting future bush-fire hot spots. Abstract:
AbstractPeatlands in Riau, Sumatra were relatively untouched by development or deforestation until at least the beginning of the 1970s. But today these landscapes are seriously degraded, with fires breaking out almost every year. Why and how has it come to this? This study attempts to make clear the relationships between the establishment of timber plantation, construction of large-scale drainage infrastructure, peatland degradation, in-migration, increasing fire events, and abandonment of peatland. This study highlights land rights as a factor that may either promote peatland degradation or motivate local people to manage degraded peatlands to better ends. It shows how large-scale drainage introduced by timber plantations since 1990s led to peatland desiccation in Riau, leading to fire events outside the plantation concession areas. Local people reacted to fire by logging and distributing parcels of peatland swamp forest outside the concession to secure land rights and to stop further concession giving to companies by the government. These activities in turn promoted peatland degradation, increasing the incidence of fire and abandonment of peatland. Local people’s scramble to secure land rights promoted peatland degradation, but as soon as they obtained land titles they managed the burned lands well. On the other hand, land distributed land without title tended to be abandoned after fires. The intrusion of timber plantations and land distribution also promoted in-migration, which contributed to peatland degradation. One of the reasons why people could distribute these peat swamp forests among themselves was poor governmental management of state forest lands, as the boundaries between the state and nonstate forests remained unclear, especially for the local people.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter uses children’s writings to argue that age must be considered as a hugely limiting modifier of experiential expertise; of how it was lived and felt, and how it could be used. Despite substantive policy and media interest in gifted children in the mid-to-late twentieth century, gifted children’s testimonies were typically published only when conforming to specific visions of the appropriate precocious child. Nonetheless, the chapter also argues, gifted young people did exert expertise within voluntary spaces that were meaningful to them. Many young people enjoyed participating in these spaces, despite their limited influence. Others used these spaces to experiment with lively written critique of adult authority. Linking to this collection’s central framing, then, this chapter shows that young people labelled “gifted” were able to “fare well” within a broader “state of welfare”, even if their specific needs were not always catered for in the institutions of the “welfare state”. Yet the chapter shows, also, that the holding of experiential expertise did not guarantee that children could “fare well”; many found this expertise a burden, rejected it, or sought to offer themselves “self-care” while negotiating their distinct new identity as “gifted”.

AbstractAccording to the soil conditions of high-rise buildings and foundation pits of steel structure projects, the technical analysis of steel structure projects is carried out. Because the project is located at an earthquake-resistant fortification intensity of 8 degrees, and the design basic seismic acceleration value is 0.30 g, the high-rise building adopts steel structure structure to ensure the performance of seismic performance, safety level, bearing capacity and other aspects. This paper introduces the steel structure construction technology in detail from the five links of steel structure deepening, construction sequence, component manufacturing process, fire prevention and anti-corrosion, and component hoisting, and analyzes the construction process and the key points of quality control in construction. Practice shows that the application effect of this technology is good and the economy is reasonable.

Abstract:
AbstractHuman footprints were discovered at Happisburgh, UK, in 2013. This paper describes their discovery and the difficulties of recording such enigmatic remains in a coastal environment. The geological and environmental context in which they were found is given, together with the evidence of the dating of the site to either 850,000 or 950,000 years ago. The implications of how humans coped with long, cold winters of northern Europe is discussed; the evidence of a family group indicates that seasonal migration is highly unlikely, leaving the possibilities of either physiological adaptations, such as functional body hair, or the use of technologies such as shelter, clothing and fire. The second part of the paper shows the various ways in which the footprints have reached wide and diverse audiences through media reports, exhibitions and books. They show the powerful messages that footprints can generate through the ideas and emotions that they provoke and the immediacy of their connection with the deep past.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that there is an empirically evident linkage between ceasefire violations (CFVs) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and India–Pakistan escalation dynamics. It examines this relationship using empirical evidence since the academic literature on South Asian escalation dynamics seems to, by and large, ignore the crucial links between CFVs and crisis escalation. The chapter also shows that CFVs have a cumulative snowballing effect; once they begin, several things could happen including political rhetoric, military posturing and diplomatic standoff which can lead to more CFVs and even more escalation. This chapter discusses eight cases to show how CFVs by themselves can lead to crisis escalation between India and Pakistan. In doing so, it juxtaposes quantitative data on CFVs and escalation during specific periods to highlight how escalation has resulted from CFVs and how the two have fed off of each other.

Chapter 4 takes up this emphasis on Black feminism as a worldmaking politics and practice in order to center the methods of WWAV’s rebuilding after the fire: in relationship, in space, in time. There are two levels to this tracing: first, Deon and Shaquita’s constant work on the road to speak WWAV’s fire dreams nationally and globally; and second, the steady reconfiguration by staff and partners of WWAV’s New Orleans–based work in and for community. By tacking back and forth between these scales constantly, this chapter shows the dynamism of fire dreams: the dreams long sheltered at WWAV were stoked on the ground and on the international stage, in and through movements for liberation rising up worldwide. These multiple registers of doing the work steadily refined, reconfigured, and at times transformed the futures being imagined.

This chapter starts by questioning any account that would see the Vineyards mere epiphenomenon. It then asks whether, despite its constituent heterogeneity, the Vineyard is held together by either the governing structure of institutions, by an ethic of responsibility, by church growth and management techniques, or by a shared aesthetic. This chapter shows that these forces, sensibilities, and techniques do have effects; in particular the Vineyard is shaped by it being in effect a ‘trust’ for an absent owner (a structure similar to that found in publicly held corporations). However, neither this force, not any other discussed in this chapter, have either the flexibility or the capacity to scale necessary to account for the Vineyard.

This chapter highlights the fateful moment of the Gaokao itself, investigating the important role of attitude and composure in examination success. It shows how head teachers personify an educational contradiction, both helping children to overcome their deficits in cultural capital and encouraging them to take individual responsibility for their examination results. It also considers the relationship between knowledge and attitude, elaborating how the capriciousness of attitude is accounted for. The chapter cites Gaokao observers that commonly remark how top students can choke on the exam, whereas dark horses can tap into their latent potential to surge from behind. It elaborates how the Gaokao assesses the diligent accumulation of knowledge and the less tangible aspects of character, particularly testing the ability of students to maintain composure and mental flexibility in the face of high pressure.

<p>The problem of bridge fires is growing. Because of a bad experience in Poland, it was decided to improve fire resistance of long span bridge structures, and of cable-stayed bridges in particular. Statistics shows that fire is a real threat to this kind of structure. They also confirm that the worst results of fire are for those with an orthotropic deck rather than with a concrete one. The basic problems to solve are how to predict fire resistance of a particular bridge and how to ensure safety and structural integrity of the bridge structure. This paper represents a review of papers that analyze forest fires in Serbia via GIS and remote sensing data. Forest fires are a hazard that could threat to the environment, and especially protected areas. GIS has great possibilities for analyzing spatial data, such as satellite images obtained by remote sensing methods. By using different data, it is possible to get more information about the extent of damage caused by forest fires, but also data about which areas are more threatened by forest fires than others. This shows the importance of GIS in forest fire analysis and that research on thi

It is important to investigate the urban and wildland fire behavior to mitigate the fire hazards. There have been many studies on such fires, but the need of real time fire simulations has recent increased and a demand to predict fire spread patterns in urban and wildland regions for decision-making strategies against fires has emerged. However, the knowledge of fire spread behavior is still insufficient, particularly for the condition of discrete fuel distributions. Under this condition the fire spread behavior shows high complexity due to the significant interactions between the radiation, c

This work presents the numerical modelling of a fire whirl generated from the liquid fuel. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was used as a CFD tool to simulate a fire whirl under predefined boundary conditions. A pyrolysis model is utilized to model the evaporation of liquid fuel. Numerical results of the Mass Burning Rate (MBR), flame height (Hf), temperature profiles, velocity contours, and velocity profiles are described. The comparison between a fire whirl (hot flow) and an air whirl (cold flow) reveals an up to 40% increase in the centreline axial velocity due to the buoyancy generated from f

The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a huge blow to every country, and many governments have struggled to meet their populations’ urgent needs during the crisis. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stepped in to offer extra support to a large number of countries during the pandemic. However, Oxfam’s analysis shows that as of 15 March 2021, 85% of the 107 COVID-19 loans negotiated between the IMF and 85 governments indicate plans to undertake austerity once the health crisis abates. The findings in this briefing paper show that the IMF is systematically encouraging countries to adopt austerity

Abstract:
This paper shows that regime shifts in Full-Information Rational Expectations (FIRE) models generate predictable regime-dependent forecast errors in macro aggregates. Hence, forecast error predictability alone is neither sufficient to reject FIRE nor informative about alternative expectations theories. We instead propose a regime-robust test of FIRE and apply it to a medium-scale New Keynesian model with monetary policy regime shifts that is estimated on US data. While the test fails to decisively reject FIRE, the model conditional on macro data implies expectations that are generally differen

Abstract:
Many firefighters have been injured or killed while trying to extinguish a basement fire or a fire on a level below them. Prior research has shown basement fires present a high risk to firefighters. This risk stems from unexpected floor collapse and high heat. Prior research also indicated the tools that firefighters have traditionally used to determine the structural integrity of the floor offer little value with lightweight construction. Past experiments in small basements have indicated that the most effective method of fighting a basement fire may be from the exterior of the building. This

The goal of fire service training is to prepare students for the conditions and challenges that they face on the fireground. Among the challenges that firefighters routinely face on the fireground are ventilation-controlled fires. The hazard of these fires has been highlighted by several line-of-duty deaths and injuries in which a failure to understand the fire dynamics produced by these fires has been a contributing factor. The synthetic fuels that commonly fill contemporary homes tend to result in ventilation-controlled conditions. While synthetic fuels are common on the residential firegrou

On one hand, we undertake an analysis of the recent evolution of capital markets and their effect on the availability of external financing in Mexico in the last two decades. On the other hand, based on a newly assembled firm-level data set on corporate governance and firm performance, we show that better firm-level corporate governance practices are linked to higher valuations, better performance and more dividends disbursed to investors. These results hold after controlling for endogeneity. Overall, the evidence shows that the Mexican legal environment

There is a continued tragic loss of firefighter and civilian lives, as shown by fire statistics. One significant contributing factor is the lack of understanding of fire behavior in residential structures resulting from the use of ventilation as a firefighter practice on the fire ground. The changing dynamics of residential fires as a result of the changes in home construction materials, contents, size and geometry over the past 30 years compounds our lack of understanding of the effects of ventilation on fire behavior.
