Abstract:
This article examines the role of the artistic image of the fireplace in «Eugene Onegin» by Alexander Pushkin. The image of the fireplace is not only a reflection of the realities of the noble life of the 15th – 20th centuries, but also a kind of companion for the characters of the novel. The task of the research is to determine the role and compositional functions of this image in the novel. It has been established that the image of the fireplace in Pushkin’s novel is found in the first, fourth, seventh and eighth chapters of the text, along with multiple references to stoves. The authors of the article tried to trace how the image of the fireplace changed from chapter to chapter, and also to determine what caused this change. The article presents various interpretations of the image of the fireplace not only in the novel «Eugene Onegin», but also in other texts by A. Pushkin, as well as in the works of other authors who implement this image in their works. It has been established that the image of the fireplace performs many functions: it reflects the desire of the characters to follow the trend of fashion; the fireplace is a traditional symbol of warmth, comfort and home; a place near the fire is a place of rest and relaxation; the fireplace often turns out to be a symbol of sadness, melancholy and a place of loneliness, etc. With the help of this image, the author characterizes not only the protagonist of the novel, but also himself.

Abstract:
Spatial patterns are formed based on local wisdom and Karangtengah Hamlet settlement which is located in the cold climate of the mountainous area in Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java has been discovered to have a uniqueness in using the fireplace as the center of its activities. Therefore, this research was conducted to uncover the basic concept of fireplace-based house spatial pattern in this settlement using a qualitative method which involves combining interview, observation, and documentation. The process also involved using 33 houses as the case study with the criterion for selection being the active use of the fireplace. The results showed the placement of fireplace in these houses was influenced by the kinship system and the purpose was to have spatial patterns designed to reduce migration from these settlements to cities.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to unravel the genesis of fireplace in a structure of ancient dwelling-house. The work is based in archaeological findings situated in Lithuanian territory. Fireplace has been and remains one of the most essential components in the existence and in the structure of a house, but so it did not attain a special research in our architecturology so far. There is various sparse and scattered data on the fireplaces of a dwelling-houses in a works of archaeologists, historians and ethnologists. The work‘s attempt is to fill the above-mentioned gap. Time period, discussed in this article, is the earliest stage in a development of a fireplace, starting jointly with the beginning of building stationary dwelling-houses.

"Both locally (San Francisco Bay Area) and nationally, evidence is mounting that particulate matter poses a serious health risk. Locally, concentrations of 10 micron particles are highest on cold nights, during the months of December and January. Analysis of the composition of these 10 micron particles suggests that a large percentage is wood smoke. Currently, there are no adequate ways to estimate the number of lit fireplaces on a given night. NASA Ames Research Center, the Naval Postgraduate School and San Francisco Bay Area Air Quality Management District performed a joint research project to determine the feasibility of using thermal imagery to detect lit fireplaces. This thesis addresses the use of an airborne multi-spectral remote sensing system to detect lit fireplaces. The focus will be on the remote sensing equipment used for fireplace detection, the development of the test plan, airborne data collection, ground truthing and data analysis." -- Abstract

Cannella, Wendy. "Fireplaces: The Unmaking of the American Male Domestic Poet (Frost, Stevens, Williams, and Stephen Dunn)." Thesis, Boston College, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2161.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Paul Mariani
The fireplace has long stood at the center of the American home, that hearth which requires work and duty and which offers warmth and transformation in return. Fireplaces: The Unmaking of the American Male Domestic Poet takes a look at three major twentieth-century men whose poetry manifests anxieties about staying home to "keep the fire-place burning and the music-box churning and the wheels of the baby's chariot turning," as Wallace Stevens described it (L 246), during a time of great literary change when their peers were widely expatriating to Europe. Fireplaces considers contemporary poet Stephen Dunn as an inheritor of this mottled Modernist lineage of male lyric domesticity in the Northeastern United States, a tradition rattled by the terrorist events of September 11, 2001 after which Dunn leaves his wife and family home to remarry, thus razing the longstanding domestic frame of his poems. Ultimately Fireplaces leaves us with a question for twenty-first century verse--can a male poet still write about home? Or has the local domestic voice been supplanted at last by a placeless strain of lyric

Abstract:
As the placeless globalization is accelerating around the world and especially in China, places that have strong ties to the particularities of a locale are desirable destinations to escape the generic monotony of placeless urbanization. The thesis here stipulates that even in a placeless globalization, opportunities exist to understand, interpret and celebrate local cultural phenomena. While many formal architectural artifacts may have outgrown their purpose and no longer have direct relevance today, a number of desires, customs and rituals persist as desirable conditions to be supported by architectural space. The thesis proposes to seek out an architecture, that embraces and reinterprets targeted aspects of the built form of traditional elements with modern means.
Master of Architecture
This thesis discusses possibilities to reinterpret the vernacular. Specifically, the sense of identity generated by the architecture traditions in Western China can be attributed to shape and construction of the roof, organization in plan, the central fire place, and a protected courtyard all enclosed by rammed earth. Reinterpretations of those elements in modern forms propose a continuity of culture and identity.

Abstract:
Forest fire is an uncontrolled combustion of flammable materials in forested and non-forested areas. In Lithuania forest fires mainly occur in late spring and summer, mostly in young coniferous forests (Forest ..., 1987). The studies of herbaceous plants in fireplaces were carried out in 2016 in Jurbarkas SFE. Ground-level forest fire increased the projection coverage of herbaceous plants and their species composition in the fireplaces. According to the average data of the survey, 18 herbaceous plant species were ascertained in the fireplace and 14 species in the control stand. During the first year after fire, 9 new species were recorded in the fireplace and 5 species have disappeared, while in the seventh year - 7 new species were recorded and 1 disappeared, as compared with the control stand. Summarizing the obtained data it can be stated that low-intensity ground-level forest fire in pine forest increased the number of herbaceous plant species, however, the number of new and extinct species has been gradually decreasing, suggesting that in the fireplaces the diversity of herbaceous plant species will be like in the control stand.

Abstract:
Building a zero energy home requires several major considerations: site selection for the home; considerations to use less; conservation of what you produce; and evaluation the best choices of renewable resources. This paper discusses the use of climate data collection software, heat loss and heat gain considerations and software; how to achieve a zero energy building and qualifying as a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified Platinum home. Site selection is the first step. This first step can be taken after you have identified your goals. What alternative energy systems do you want to use? Do you want to use more than one alternative source? What other site considerations are important? In my case, I wanted to use solar energy as my primary alternative energy source. Why? I want comfort, reliability and ease of use. Other alternatives may require more maintenance. Wind power will be a second source that will be incorporated to produce electricity when the PV system can not produce. The site selected is a south facing mountain that has a steady breeze most of the time. Another consideration for me is the ability to use earth-sheltering as a measure of high efficiency construction. The south-facing mountain also provides the opportunity to “nestle” into the mountainside. Calculations and basis of design are presented. Using less is a key mindset that we all need to move toward. Using less does not mean that you suffer. This house will be comfortable year round with little effort because the house uses passive solar design for lighting and space heating, active solar hot water for additional heating of the floor and domestic hot water, and PV/wind/biodiesel generator backup to generate electricity for lighting and other typical electrical loads. The construction materials provide high R-values and green products that contribute to excellent indoor air quality. SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) will be used as the structural components for the walls and roof. All electrical appliances, refrigerator, lighting, and washer/dryer were selected to use less electricity and water. Data describing the energy requirements are provided. Reuse all that you can. I am incorporating a masonry heater, also known as a Russian Fireplace. The combustion efficiency of the masonry fireplace is typically 92–94 percent with very low emissions. The masonry fireplace will provide passive mass for passive release of the woodburning energy during the evening and heat hot water coils in the fireplace as well (as the hot water backup system). The use of hard woods from the land will provide heat overnight, heat for cooking and supply additional BTUs for domestic hot water and radiant heat. Many of the building materials that are selected for construction are from the land; stone and whole cut wood from the land will be used for esthetic appeal and thermal mass thereby reducing harmful manufacturer’s emissions. My site is an excellent site for a hybrid solar and wind power (with a biodiesel generator as backup) system. The orientation and wind profile of the land is optimal for solar and wind energy applications. Site specific data and optimization of active solar, passive solar and PV/wind systems are presented. Life cycle costs are presented to show the cost comparison using Years-to-Payback and Return on Investment approaches for the energy systems and LEED certification costs for new construction.
