Because public areas in Taiwan such as hostels, movie theaters, supermarkets, stadiums, and large entertainment venues are typically packed with people, when fires occur, the smoke and high heat often lead to human casualties. Therefore, the studies on fire dynamic characteristics are essential. In this paper, we studied a major fire accident occurred in one of Taipei’s major hostels, during which the lodgers awoke and attempted escape. This accident led to eight deaths; the victims either died from the burns they sustained or choked to death in their bedrooms or in the staircase. The fire acc

Work on the material culture of the eighteenth century has shown that light was more than a metaphor. The everyday social practise of the Enlightenment reposed on a contrast between light and dark. There was a growing emphasis on brightness in clothing and furnishings, and elite homes, social venues, fashionable shops, and even the main streets were more brightly lit. Fireworks displays became more frequent and more spectacular. Furthermore, in many Enlightenment practices, such as theater, Freemason lodges, salons, and coffeehouses, light was not simply a practical necessity, but was central

This thesis is the first sustained analysis of the relationship between Elizabethan theatre and the judicial practice of burning at the stake. Focusing on a five-year window of theatrical output (1587-1592), it argues that polemical literary presentations of burning are the key to understanding the stage's negotiation of this most particular form of judicial violence. Unlike other forms of penal violence, burning at the stake was not staged, and only fourteen incidences of the punishment are recorded in Elizabethan England.
