I was eleven years old when I read a book by Roy Chapman Andrews (1953) that changed my life. It was a book about dinosaurs, those magnificent animals that had captured my interest when I was even younger. But more significantly, the book was about looking for the remains of these ancient dragons in the Gobi Desert of China and Mongolia, and for the first time I learned that there was a potential career in hunting dinosaurs. The day I read the book was the day I decided to become a paleontologist. But in my wildest dreams I never imagined that I would follow in the footsteps of Andrews and end

He disavows the often mysterious and arcane jargon that academiainsists must be correct in order to make his message accessible to anyone who mayventure to read it, from the most educated to the least educated.

However, to avoid reducing neoliberalism to a broad abstraction, I make three commitments in this book: first, to show the meaning of neoliberalism through fundraisers’ perspectives and through the policy context of their careers in the late 1990s and early 2000s; second, to contrast neoliberalism with the shape of the welfare state that came before;
