Abstract:
A flow-through pond at White Sulphur Springs National Fish Hatchery was evaluated as culture environment for juvenile freshwater mussels of Villosa iris and Lampsilis fasciola. Survival did not differ significantly (p = 0.1910) over 93 d for V. iris cultured with silt (mean 49.8% ± SD 14.5) and without (mean 32.9% ± SD 11.7). Survival differed significantly (p <0.0001) between juveniles of V. iris (mean 49.8% ± SD 14.5 at age 93 d) and L. fasciola (mean 6.3% ± SD 4.5 at age 86 d). This may indicate that the pond failed to meet requirements of L. fasciola, or may have resulted from micr

Abstract:
Australian bass (Macquaria novemaculeata Steindachner) fingerlings are currently available from fish hatcheries but little work has been carried out on the grow-out of this species. The aim of this investigation was to provide information on the diet and growth of the species in two managed growth ponds; a nursery pond and a grow-out pond. The growth of Australian bass was found to be superior to that of wild bass populations, although survival rate was very low. After 54 weeks, mean total length was 132mm (range 108-151 mm) and mean weight was 28.94g (range 16.31-41.869). Length-weight rela

Abstract:
An Investigation Into the ecology of benthic macro-invertebrates in earthen ponds subjected to intensive trout (Salmo trutta L.) culture practices at Howletoun, Central Scotland, was conducted between May 1984 and January 1986. Soil and water quality, seasonal changes in benthos, its role in the trout diet and the Interaction between fish and benthos were studied. Pond benthos mainly comprised 6 major groups including Oligochaeta. (10 species), Chironomldae (18 species), Molluscs and Hirudinea (2 species each) and an asellid and a sialid species. Oligochaeta formed 78 to 90% of benthic fauna,

Abstract:
The aquaculture of penaeid shrimp has grown from its experimental beginnings roughly about three decades ago into a major industry which, on a world wide basis, provides employment to hundreds of thousands of both skilled and unskilled labourers, billions of U.S. dollars in revenue and a high quality food product (Lightner and Redman, 1998). Factors, such as, increasing demand and market value, introduction of new technologies in the prawn seed and feed production and other modem culture techniques contribute to this rapid development in the prawn culture industry, which in turn has bee

Abstract:
This investigation explored the use of microcosms as a tool for studying the dynamics of tropical aquaculture ponds. The potential use of rabbit excreta as a pond fertilizer in integrated farming systems was also investigated. Twelve insulated fiber glass tanks were utilized as microcosms to simulate earthen ponds. Seven hand-sexed Nile Tilapia O. niloticus) were stocked per tank, and microcosm performance was observed for a 90- day experimental period. Three rabbit excreta loading rates corresponding to 50 and 75 kg/10,000 m³ /day, and a continuously adjusted manure loading rate were assessed

Abstract:
This thesis examined the influence of fall-spawning coho salmon on the density, growth rate, body condition, and survival to outmigration of juvenile coho salmon rearing in beaver ponds on the Copper River Delta, Alaska. During the fall of 1999 and 2000 fish rearing in ponds that received spawning salmon were compared to ponds that did not receive spawners, and to ponds that were artificially enriched with salmon carcasses and eggs. Juvenile coho salmon responded variably to fall-spawning salmon. There were no consistent patterns associated with the two naturally occurring pond types (spawning
