Abstract:
The Fulton Fish Market was a colorful part of the New York City landscape that operated on Fulton Street in Manhattan for over 150 years. In 2005 the market moved from the South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan to Hunts Point in the South Bronx. The Fulton Fish Market—now called The New Fulton Fish Market—is one of the world's largest fish markets, second in size only to Tsukiji, the famous fish market in Tokyo. To economists, it may seem that a large centralized market with well-informed buyers and sellers should also be a very competitive market. But fish is a highly differentiated product. Buyers often wish to examine fish themselves, or have their agents do so. The centralized market performs an important function in matching fish to buyers. The high level of product differentiation and the institutional structure in the Fulton fish market can lead to patterns of behavior that suggest imperfect competition and a segmented market. At times in the past, the repeated nature of price setting and extensive knowledge of the sellers may have created the basis for tacit collusion and allowed the dealers to gather economic rents by exploiting the different elasticities and buying patterns. Additional economic rents resulted from subsidies. Before reforms in 1995, lax regulation of the market provided fertile ground for organized crime.

Abstract:
One of the most important blossom trades in the economy of Bangladesh is fish marketing. To understand the current practices of fish market and marketing systems in Bogura district of Bangladesh, an investigation was conducted based on existing marketing system and economic features of marketing activities and inefficiencies. Fish marketing is almost exclusively maintained by the private sector and large number of intermediaries such as local traders, agents/suppliers, and retailers are involved in the distribution process of fish marketing. Data were collected from 45 fish traders through questionnaire interviews and participatory rural approach methods during December 2011 to May 2012 from three different fish markets named as Fateh Ali Fish Market, Godarpara Fish market and Khandar Fish market of Bogura district. The daily supply of fish in Fateh Ali Fish market, Godarpara Fish market and Khandar Fish market were estimated at 6.75 tons, 0.765 tons and 0.495 tons, respectively. Present supply and requirement of the fish showed a wide gap and virtually most of the fish (85%) is imported from outside where the local supply of fish is only 15%. There is a high consumer preference for Indian major carps i.e. rohu, catal, mrigal and exotic carps silver carp, grass and common carp, tilapia, pangas etc. The price of fish depends on market structure, species, quality, size, weight and season that’s why a well-systematized marketing setup is crucial for reasonable price for fishes. The study revealed that almost all traders in three markets made a considerable amount of profit and broadly improved their food consumption facilities, standards of living, purchasing power, choice and ability as an economic sector. However concerns arise about the sustainable marketing system due to higher transport costs, poor transport facilities, inadequate supply of ice, lack of money for business, and poor institutional support. It is an urgent issue to establish ice factory, improvement of transport facilities, provision of governmental, institutional and banking assistance, introduction of fish quality control measures and training of fish market operators for improved their marketing system. Therefore, the present study emphasizes the fundamental marketing system, market flow of fish, availability of fish in these three markets, and market related constraints in Bogura district, Bangladesh. Abstract:
Fish is a commodity that has a high nutritional value and highly perishable. The distribution plays an essential role in determining the quality control of the fish to be bought by the consumers. At present, the handling and quality control of the fish, from the fishing port until the fish market, is not proper. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution channel of mackerel fish (Scomberomorus commerson), the fish handling and to assess the quality of the fish which distibuted from the Blanakan coastal fishing port to the fish market. The results of the kruskal wallis test revealed the influence of the distribution of mackerel fish from Blanakan to the fish market, consist of eight regional fish markets and two local fish markets. Based on the organoleptic assessment, there was a decrease in fish quality by 11% in terms of appearance parameters such as eye, gills, body mucus, odors, and texture .

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the marketing channel, marketing cost and marketing margin and problems associated with fish marketing in order to provide recommendations for efficient fish marketing system in Barisal city, southern Bangladesh. Data were collected from seven fish markets of Barisal, southern Bangladesh including Port road fish market, Taltoli bazar fish market, Chaumatha fish market, Notullabad bus stand fish market, Kasipur bazar fish market and Bazar road fish market. Both primary and secondary data were used during 1 year study period from May, 2011 to April, 2012. Primary data were collected through field surveys and pre-structured questionnaire was used for interviewing of 10 organizers, 20 aratdars (commission agent), 50 fish traders and 100 consumers. Secondary source of information consists of published materials such as journals, textbooks, newspapers and also from interviewing different government and non-government officials and members of various fisheries related cooperative societies. The results of this study revealed 11 fish marketing channels in Barisal city’s fish marketing system. The average marketing cost ranged from 4.15% to 8.33% (6.76±0.98) % of the final retail price. The highest and lowest average fish price were recorded as USD 7.07/kg and USD 1.03/kg for giant fresh water prawn and silver carp, correspondingly. Intermediaries’ marketing margin on different species’ marketing fluctuated from 29.6% to 50.28% (39.38±5.22) % for silver carp and brown shrimp marketing, respectively. Establishment of modern fish landing center and retail markets near the fish landing port, introduction of government fish shops and insulated and refrigerated fish vans and fish carriers, training of all personnel related to fish marketing about fish handling, quality of fish, hygiene practices, improvement of existing fish market structure, provision for government and private funding assistance for fishers/fish farmer, formulation and enactment of independent act/ordinance for fish landing and marketing are highly recommended. Abstract:
This research aimed to understand the flow of fish commodity, information, and financial in the fish supply chain at the traditional market, through case study in the Beringharjo market Yogyakarta. Data was collected through systematic interview with 18 fish businesspersons and observation on the study site. The study showed fish commodities in the market consisted of marine, freshwater and processed fish (salted/dried fish and soft bone milkfish/bandeng presto). The fish majorly supplied by suppliers from outside Yogyakarta, that reached 86-90% for fresh fish (marine and freshwater) and 100% for salted fish and raw material of bandeng presto. Suppliers and traders in Beringharjo market used flexible methods of payment, such as manual receipt and trust-based relation (for instance pay on other day). The suppliers and traders had been work together for more than five years. The emerging problems were the lack of fresh fish supply and the low quality of processed fish. The supply chain model for fresh fish involved three stages (supplier-seller-ultimate customer/household) and the supply chain model for processed fish in four stages (supplier-wholesaler-trader/seller-ultimate consumer). The supply chain model for the milkfish also consisted of four stages (supplier-fish processor-seller-ultimate consumer). The study indicates the importance of improving local fish production systems to fullfill growing fish consumption in DIY.

Abstract:
The first civilizations we have ever heard of were along the banks of mighty rivers like Nile, Euphrates, Indus and Huang. These civilizations developed along rivers as riverfronts provided opportunities for tradeand transportation, fertile land to grow crops, water for drinking, washing, livestock and other domestic uses and food in the form of fish. Gradually, they came to define cities, became a part of identities of people, such as "India" from "Indus," while, providing a sense of place and connecting the populace to nature. Yet rivers have often ended up being abused and neglected in our course towards urbanization. It is this "neglect" that needs to be shunned. The relationship with the rivers needs to be re-forged. To develop a strategy for this shift in attitude, this research has chosen the case of Chesapeake Bay. Chesapeake Bay is an estuary lying inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It has mainland North America to its west and Delmarva Peninsula on the east. It is the largest Estuary in the United States. More than 150 major rivers and streams flow into the Chesapeake Bay. The estuary provides habitat to several species of wildlife and aquatic life. Today, this bay faces many issues such as nutrient and sediment pollution, Storm water runoff, lowering of shellfish species etc. One of the major causes of the polluted bay is storm water runoff. Storm water washes pollution off the roads and other surfaces and takes them to the water. Stormwater is generally more polluted in urban areas than rural areas. This thesis, attempts to demonstrate what can be done with a typical pixel in the whole mosaic of the bay . The Maine Avenue Fish Market, sitting just upstream to the now being developed Southwest Waterfront, seems a perfect choice for this endeavor. This market, a small urban waterfront space, is ideal for exploring ideas and solutions to avoid water pollution by stormwater, cleaning the quality of water and also, in the process, develop the area in relation to the city and its surroundings. This thesis aims to establish an ecological and social relationship between the natural resource and the urban life.

Abstract:
Baltic fish tank is a project generated with the aim to recreate vivacity at Skeppsbrokajen by adding a fish market that is not only a venue but also an attractive force within itself. From early mornings to late evenings the market will offer a scene of fishing activities.   The project name Baltic fish tank has a historical reference to the fish buyers sumps, which existed on the site during the early 1900s. The market is therefore placed under the existing quay level to free space on the embankment as well as create a suitable environment for seafood. A glass wall is the only thing separating the Baltic sea from the visitor and heightens the feeling of closeness to the ocean.   The marketplace is situated in between two of the Old Town's alleys. The floors of the building are designed for two types of visitors; the client passing by and the consumer who wants the full fish market experience. The vision is to enhance the visitors’ experience, allowing the consumer to follow the fish from the fisherman’s hand to the cold ice display out in the marketplace. The entire process including the gutting of the fish is easily followed through the glass walls adding to a full transparency.

The growing and declining demand of the different fish oil application markets. The price of heavy furnace oil compared to fish oil selling price. (Heavy furnace oil is used to generate energy) . The research also investigated the impact of low price fish oil substitutes on the South African fish oil producers. The most important substitute in the current South African majority market, the animal feed market, is vegetable oils. The research finding is that the South African fish oil producers must follow the vegetable oil selling price trend. The most important finding of the research is the high priority the fish oil quality achieves in all the fish oil market segments. The South African domestic market is limited in that it is only the animal feed market and the refinery. export market. The alternative market to sell to is the However, the international fish oil market perceives the South African fish oil to be of low quality. A mindset regarding the importance of fish oil quality has to start at the South African fish oil producers. It is vital that the South African fish oil producers institute quality systems to improve their fish oil quality. The South African fish oil producers must gear themselves to become globally competitive.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Emerging global trends towards sustainable development have placed emphasis on the need to create sustainable food value chains. Many food value chains are becoming weakened through their reliance on eco-systems that are deteriorating. Furthermore, while food systems are under threat, global food consumption is on the rise. The conundrum seems inescapable. Humanity’s food supply methods have moved on from hunter-gatherer characteristics apart from the exception of the fishing industry. The current generation may be the last to witness the wide-spread practice of fishing. Aquaculture, and in particular fish-farming, has begun to show much potential as a method of producing sustainable sources of protein. Whether this can be utilized in the South African context is a challenge that needs to be verified. This research, presented as two articles, explores the potential for the development of the fish-farming sector in South Africa, and recommends suitable species. Although there is some literature on how fish-farming may have a place in South Africa’s sustainability quest, it is scarce. This research aims to enhance the literature base on fish-farming in South Africa, as well as provide further evidence on what the true potential is for fish-farming in South Africa. This was done through a series of primary and secondary data collection methods that allow for a thorough analysis of fish-farming in South Africa and the species involved. The analysis revealed that the fish-farming sector and the cultivatable species in South Africa are met with an array of opportunities and challenges. Overcoming these challenges will open the doors to exploit the opportunities available.

Abstract:
This thesis, submitted for the Doctor of Philosophy in Geography and Environment, presents a case study of the development of the UK's market-based management system for oceanic fisheries. Implemented gradually in the years since 1984, the informal nature of the UK's fisheries management system, which has developed through a number of incremental changes and government-industry "gentlemen’s agreements" rather than clear legislative moves, means that few official policy documents (and perhaps consequently, little academic literature) on the subject currently exist. This thesis traces the material and political processes of market formation, looking at the origin of market-based policies in the theories of bioeconomics and wider economic history. It asks what the implicit assumptions of the economic discipline can – and can't – tell us about the impacts and outcomes of market creation, and using a Foucauldian inspired approach to economic performativity, discusses the role of ostensibly descriptive theories in shaping the world around them. Finally, it calls for a greater geographical engagement with marine issues, and proposes an action-research role for geographers in the politics of the sea.

AbstractThis chapter describes four pilot cases covering the Norwegian pelagic fisheries for small fish species in the North Atlantic Ocean, such as mackerel, herring and blue whiting. The pilot cases aim to improve sustainability and value creation. Big data methods and tools have been used to demonstrate the potential impact on fuel consumption, fisheries planning and fish stock assessments. Specifically, the pilots have targeted immediate operational choices, short-term fisheries planning, fish stock assessments and longer-term market predictions.

Abstract:
The main object of this paper is the food safety of the Russian Federation - it is such a state of the country's economy when food independence of the Russian Federation is provided, physical and economic availability of food stuffs, corresponding to the requirements of Russian Federation legislation in safety and quality, is guaranteed for the population of the country. Realization of Russia's national interests in this field is a key problem. Guarantee of food safety is connected with the overcoming of negative factors which have a complex character and are caused by the following: 1. considerable increase of threshold value of the criteria of domestic market saturation by import output, for example, - meat; 2. low level of paying capacity of the population for food stuff; 3. price disproportion at the markets of agricultural, fish output and food stuff on one side and material-technical resources on the other; 4. disturbance of stability of financial-credit system; 5. insufficient level of development of domestic market infrastructure; 6. moral and physical aging of material-technical basis of agro-industrial and fishery complexes; 7. insufficient level of innovation and investment activities; 8. reduction of national genetic resources.

Abstract:
A multilevel boarding version (low and high level platform boarding) of the bi-level commuter car for the North American market has been developed. The major challenge of the bi-level carbody design with the high and lower boarding access, i.e., passenger doors, is the side sill interruption at the lower level. The side sill is the main structural member (beside the center sill) that transmits the longitudinal load from the one end of the car to the other end. Since the side sill is interrupted by placing lower level passenger doors the alternative load path had to be designed. Originally, a solution similar to the one used on the California bi-level car was considered. However, due to major differences in the equipment arrangement and seating plan, an alternative design was developed. Consequently, the LIRR carbody type was chosen, with the exception that the lower body section between bolsters, “fish belly” was similar to the MARC III section. The specific goal and the first step were to study and confirm the feasibility of the concept. As a good engineering practice, prior to the initiation of any major carbody design, a preliminary structural analysis was provided. The worst-case structural scenarios regarding door and window locations were considered. Preliminary structural analysis included linear, static, finite element carbody analysis for various loads and loads requirements defined. This study summarizes the results of the analyses for each load case. The study also comprises the investigation and applicability of the relevant laws and requirements for Tier-I passenger equipment with specific emphasis to the Bi-level car. The applicability of the Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR, Transportation, Parts 200 to 399 and American Public Transit Association (APTA) Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices for Rail Passenger Equipment was investigated in detail. Relevant laws, standards, and requirements for Tier-I passenger equipment were identified, categorized and prioritized. Based on the relevant standards, feasibility analysis was performed for the most demanding design. Stress contour and deflection plots from the finite element analyses are provided only for the worst-case direction for a given loading scenario. Floor and seating plans accommodating the multilevel boarding options were developed.
