Abstract:
For many species, distribution and abundance is driven by a trade-off between abiotic and biotic stress tolerance (i.e. physical stress versus competition or predation stress). This trade- off may be caused by metabolic rate differences in species such that slow metabolic rates increase abiotic tolerance but decrease biotic tolerance. I investigated how metabolic rate differences were responsible for an abiotic-biotic tolerance trade-off in brown mudfish (Neochanna apoda) and banded kokopu (Galaxias fasciatus), that drives the allop

The movement of ornamental fish through exporting and importing practices is a major factor for the transboundary spread of pathogens. Australia has one of the most stringent standards for the importation of ornamental fish, which includes pre-border health certification, inspection upon arrival and a mandatory 1 – 3 week quarantine period in a quarantine approved premise. Despite these quarantine measures, in 2003 an exotic viral pathogen known as dwarf gourami iridovirus (DGIV) was the causative agent of a mass mortality event in farmed Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii), an iconic na

Abstract:

Abstract:
The motivation for the work presented in this thesis is to retrieve profile information for the atmospheric trace constituents nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) in the lower troposphere from remote sensing measurements. The remote sensing technique used, referred to as Multiple AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS), is a recent technique that represents a significant advance on the well-established DOAS, especially for what it concerns the study of tropospheric trace consituents. NO2 is an important trace gas in the lower troposphere due to the fact that it i
