Abstract:
Fitness bands are widely available and assist with tracking the number of steps taken. However, for older people with slow gaits, shorter step widths and/or use of ambulatory devices, the accuracy of fitness bands for step counting has not been well studied. Using four commercially available fitness bands (Garmin Vivofit2™, Fitbit Flex™, Up3™ and Microsoft Band™), we studied 30 older people with varying ambulatory abilities. We videotaped participants walking and compared the videotaped step count with the fitness band counts. Only 5 of the 30 participants had accurate readings within a ±20 pe

The ALPHA-FIT Project, completed in 2009 and funded by the European Union, aimed at providing a set of validated tools to assess levels of physical activity and fitness. This study seeks to assess indirectly a component of muscular fitness, namely the leg extensor power in young Romanians aged 20-29 years and also to compare the two methods of measurement using the metric band and optical sensors. The research was conducted within the UPB Sports Complex between 15 October and 1 December 2016. There were investigated 493 young people, of which 334 were males and 159 females. Indirect assessment

Abstract:
Tubes operated in furnaces are known to suffer from damage as a result of time dependent strain, i.e. creep. As such there is a need to predict remaining life. The MPC Omega Method has been adopted by API (API 579 “Fitness for Service”) as the standard method of life assessment and has been used to perform a remnant life assessment on a platformer furnace. Samples of T9 tubes were removed from the heater based on site inspection to determine the levels of strain. This inspection was undertaken after 224,000 hours operation at a process gas outlet temperature of 540°C. The uncertainty caused by

The benefits of mechanized welding for pipeline construction are well known, as reflected by the high industrial acceptance and usage of its variations. However, the engineering and qualification costs associated with the preparation of alternative acceptance criteria for typical pulsed and short-circuit MIG (GMAW-P and GMAW-S) girth welds can make the implementation of mechanization too costly and/or time consuming for small projects. Protein has a singularly prominent place in discussions about food. It symbolises fitness, strength and masculinity, motherhood and care. It is the preferred macronutrient of affluence and education, the mark of a conscientious diet in wealthy countries and of wealth and success elsewhere. Through its association with livestock it stands for pastoral beauty and tradition. It is the high-tech food of science fiction, and in discussions of changing agricultural systems it is the pivotal nutrient around which good and bad futures revolve. There is no denying that we need protein and that engaging

House flies (Muscadomestica) are global pests of animal agriculture, causing major annoyance, carrying pathogens among production facilities and humans and thus have profound impacts on animal comfort and productivity. Successful fly control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that includes elements of manure management, mass trapping, biological control, and selective insecticide use. Insecticidal control of house flies has become increasingly difficult due to the rapidity with which resistance develops, even to new active ingredients. Global climate change poses additional

Heterosis, the enigmatic phenomenon in which whole genome heterozygous hybrids demonstrate superior fitness compared to their homozygous parents, is the main cornerstone of modern crop plant breeding. One explanation for this non-additive inheritance of hybrids is interaction of alleles within the same locus. This proposal aims at screening, identifying and investigating heterosis trait loci (HTL) for different yield traits by implementing a novel integrated mapping approach in Sorghum bicolor as a model for other crop plants. Gram-negative plant pathogenic bacteria employ specialized type-III secretion systems (TTSS) to deliver an arsenal of pathogenicity proteins directly into host cells. These secretion systems are encoded by hrp genes (for hypersensitive response and pathogenicity) and the effector proteins by so-called dsp or avr genes. The functions of effectors are to enable bacterial multiplication by damaging host cells and/or by blocking host defenses. We characterized essential hrp gene clusters in the Stewart's Wilt of maize pathogen, Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pnss; formerly Erwinia stewartii)

The goal of our BARD proposal was to build both the necessary infrastructure and knowledge for using the CRISPR/Cas9-based gene drive system to control the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. Our research focused on achieving three main goals: (1) establishing a CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system for producing genetically-edited B. tabaci; (2) generating and testing CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutations targeting genes that represent two gene drive strategies: population replacement and population suppression; (3) using computer modeling to optimize strategies for applying CRISPR/Cas9 to control B. tabaci populati
