Abstract:
This study investigated Swedish PTs, their professional activities, education and experiences and perceptions of their own education. A questionnaire was administered to individuals who are educated and / or actively working as PTs. The result shows a multifaceted occupational group, consisting of men and women of all ages between 18-63 years, with varying degrees of work experience and employment rate with both self-employed and employed PTs. The results suggest that PTs are educated, both from formal university educations and informal PT educations. PTs consider themselves generally satisfied with their education but would like to see higher demands placed on both educators of PTs and the PTs who complete their educations. In particular, the PT education requests a syllabus that to a greater extent deals with the practical tasks that come with the PT profession's requirements for sales and handling of customers. There is a belief and perception among PTs that if higher requirements are placed on PT educations, a higher professional standard can be achieved, and with that, the working conditions of the profession can be improved.

Abstract:
In this research project, the potential of integrating ePortfolios into the reflection and assessment component between a personal trainer and client was examined. Research demonstrates that more effective learning occurs when reflection and engagement are integral components. The problem that this thesis aimed to answer was the importance of enhancing student engagement, in the classroom and beyond. New technology applications like ePortfolios allow for great student reflection and deep learning but are not universally applied. As such, this study explored the potential of integrating an e portfolio as a reflection technology to enhance engagement during learning. While ePortfolios are commonly found in an academic setting, professionals in healthcare have also used ePortfolios with their patients, clients or peers. Could ePortfolios be used by personal trainers, clients, coaches and athletes? If so, how? What would be the outcomes? The focus of this research project was to explore the potential of integrating ePortfolios into the reflection and assessment component between a personal trainer/client. Eight trainers throughout the Ottawa area were interviewed to gain an understanding of their perception on the ways in which trainers could enhance their client’s fitness journey through the use of an ePortfolio and if so, how would the ePortfolio would be used. The results of this research project provided insight as to whether or not reflective technology strategies such as ePportfolios would enhance the client’s fitness journey and if so, how would the ePortfolio be used. Ultimately, this thesis will inform our understanding of how ePortfolios can be transferred from an academic setting to foster deep learning in kinesiology settings.

Abstract:
Kinesiology<br>Ph.D.<br>The field of personal fitness training is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. Historically, scholars, undergraduate institutions, and national certifying organizations that focused on the education of personal fitness trainers have given instructional priority to biological and exercise science content. However, more recent research has underscored the value of psychological and interpersonal skills in driving clients' health and fitness goal attainment. Consequently, the goal of the present study was to determine the impact of a five-hour exercise psychology experiential workshop on levels of perceived importance, confidence in knowledge, and content knowledge of key exercise psychology concepts and skills in a non-randomized sample of personal fitness trainers and students (n = 41). Through a sequential explanatory mixed methods research design, participants were assessed quantitatively pre-intervention and post-intervention. A qualitative follow-up assessment was conducted one-month post-intervention with a sub-set of participants (n = 17). The workshop produced significant improvements in self-reported measures of confidence in knowledge and perceptions of importance of key exercise psychology concepts and skills as well as content knowledge of the exercise psychology concepts covered in the workshop. Further quantitative analyses revealed that certain demographics, namely gender, age, and academic coursework had distinct associations with each of the outcome variables. Follow-up qualitative analyses suggested that participants rated the workshop highly and described their experience in predominately positive terms. Suggestions were provided on how to improve the workshop, particularly focusing on elements of its content and overall structure. Results from the current study highlight the need for increased exposure of personal fitness trainers to instruction in exercise psychology. Given the benefits of developing exercise psychology knowledge, skills, and abilities, the results of this research indicate that preparation for the personal fitness training profession can be enhanced through increased attention to exercise psychology. Limitations of the current study and future directions for outcome research and practice are discussed.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
First established in the 1990's, the personal training industry in New Zealand has experienced unprecedented growth. Over 80% of New Zealand health clubs market the services of Personal Trainers and there are now over 1500 registered Personal Trainers working in a range of settings. Their primary professional role is one whereby they promote and support individuals to attain desired 'results' in relation to their physical fitness and particularly, to adopt a more physically active lifestyle. But despite the growth of this industry, little is known about how Personal Trainers actually go about supporting the clients who purchase their service to find a way into, as well as stay committed to a physically activity lifestyle. To date there has been no research in New Zealand exploring how Personal Trainers operate as agents of behaviour change. Furthermore, there appears only anecdotal evidence about how the intervention strategies used by Personal Trainers reflect those recommended in the 'behaviour-change' literature. This thesis focused on the daily, working experiences of ten Personal Trainers. Inspired by the interpretive paradigm, in-depth interviews were conducted and analysis of the data, guided by the tenets of grounded theory, allowed the story about the way each participant went about her/his work to emerge. The study highlights a variety of issues that these Trainers recognise as significantly influencing their ability to succeed in an increasingly competitive and demanding business. Specific reference was also given to the behavioural intervention strategies that each participant believed were the most beneficial in nurturing client lifestyle behaviour-change. The study outcomes reveal that although the Trainers worked independently of each other there was considerable commonality in the approaches they had developed. All agreed on the importance of presenting themselves as confident, competent professionals who modelled healthy life-styles to their clients. Some of the strategies they used were similar in some regards to those described in the intervention literature, but others were not. A salient point made by all was that, despite some of their practices lying outside the professional boundaries defined by their professional registration organisation, the provision of services to clients often went beyond the 'physical'. Nutritional counselling especially had become an integral part of the service they provided for clients and was, in fact, an area which clients 'expected' them to be experts in. Each acknowledged the challenge of devising strategies to keep their clients committed, motivated and returning to them. The study highlighted two distinct phases of intervention as the Trainers used different motivational approaches to firstly, initiate change and then maintain their client's progress. As the clients began to see results all of the trainers agreed that their relationship with their long-term clients became more collegial. As time progressed, and in order to facilitate and foster client belief in the inherent value of physical activity 'for life', the Trainers became their client's Life Coach. The Personal Trainers in this study described a multitude of roles that each believed they needed to fulfil in order that they achieved on-going success as a Trainer. This emphasises the need for a more expansive education programme for Personal Trainers. Programmes which move beyond a traditional fitness discourse and better reflect the complexities of what it truly means to be a one-on-one 'Trainer'.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to aid in the development of a web-based physical activity intervention for people with type 2 diabetes living in remote and rural areas. Chapter 1 introduces the research area, the design of the thesis and the key research questions. The thesis is then made up of 5 key studies. Study one, a systematic review of the literature was conducted and reported in chapter 2. This review identified the technologies that have previously been used to promote physical activity in type 2 diabetes, it identified the methodological quality of each included technology and the key components for effective change. Web based technology was the most commonly used and the most effective in increasing physical activity using components such as goal setting and physical activity trackers. These results informed study 2 (chapter 3) which explored patient and health professional's views on diabetes, physical activity and use of the internet. The need for clear information was identified with regard to diabetes as well as the call for accurate physical activity advice in relation to diabetes for both patients and health professionals. Study 3 (chapter 4) explored key information and components for an effective website. Included features were the need for a personalised approach; detailed advice on how the body responds to physical activity; a physical activity tracker and goal setting. The need for a 'virtual trainer' for support, advice and help with goal setting and interactive maps showing physical activity opportunities were all deemed important. The fourth study, chapter 5 described the design of the website and its features as well as the protocol for a six month pilot randomised controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of the development website, with and without interactive design elements. The final study in this thesis (chapter 6), describes the physical activity, physiological and biochemical results from a randomised controlled trial to test the effectiveness of the website and its features. The final chapter summarises the findings in response to the research questions and the future recommendations based on the outcomes.

Grosz, Rachael Lorraine. "EFFECTS OF EXERCISE AND MENTAL FATIGUE ON RESPONSE INHIBITION IN EXERCISE-TRAINED VERSUS SEDENTARY COLLEGE STUDENTS." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53737.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if fitness levels of individuals affect cognitive function. This study seeks to show how response inhibition and accuracy are affected following a mentally fatiguing task. Response inhibition refers to the suppression of actions that are inappropriate and that interfere with goal driven behavior. Response inhibition in reference to the continuous performance task (CPT) is measured in false clicks. The tasks for the CPT were completed after either a controlled period of rest or moderate-intensity exercise. Subjects were either Georgia Tech Division I track athletes or students leading a sedentary lifestyle. All subjects participated in two test protocols. Athletic subjects completed the resting protocol first, while sedentary subjects completed the exercise protocol first. Subjects reported to the lab following an overnight fast. They completed an initial set of paper work and signed a consent form, filled out a 24 hour history form and completed a Profile of Moods States (POMS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) form. Subjects then took a 20-minute (CPT). The CPT is a neuropsychological test that measures an individual’s sustained and selective attention. The length of the test is 20 minutes in order to induce mental fatigue. The goal of the test is to click in a white box when the letter T is seen. Immediately after subjects filled out a secondary set of paperwork. Once paper work was complete subjects either rested or exercised for 35 minutes. If subject was classified as an athlete, trial 1 was rest, while trial 2 was exercise. If subject was classified as a sedentary student, trial 1 was exercise, and trial 2 was rest. After the subject completed either the cycling or resting portion they repeated the CPT for five minutes. It was hypothesized that that the effects of moderate exercise positively affect the subject’s performance on the CPT. I expect false clicks following the 5 minute CPT to be lower after exercising. I hypothesize that for both groups their accuracy should be higher after moderate cycling and that higher fitness level should decrease the level of mental fatigue experienced throughout the CPT.

Abstract:
Concurrent training (CT) is defined as the development of both endurance and strength within the same exercise program. CT has been studied for decades, but the results has been diverse. However, very few have studied the effects of CT on the upper body musculature. Hence, this review set out to investigate the effects of combined strength and endurance training (ET) of the upper body on muscle hypertrophy, muscle strength and endurance variables. PubMed was searched with relevant search terms with varying combinations, such as concurrent training, combined strength and endurance training. After scanning the literature, a total of eight articles were included. The results suggest that muscle strength, exercise economy and time to exhaustion can effectively be improved by CT of the upper body. The effect of CT on upper body musculature were unclear. Some of the articles included suggests a decrease in whole body lean mass, which might simply be due to insufficient loading of the lower body musculature. In order to maintain muscle mass during a CT protocol, endurance athletes should aim to perform ST which targets muscles active during ET. However, the limited empiric literature available on CT of the upper body makes a conclusion hard to draw. This review shows that CT of the upper body is yet an unexplored and researchers should further investigate the effects of CT for the musculature of the upper body alone. If we gain more knowledge of the effects from concurrent training of the upper body, it could have several implications, both clinically and in a sport setting.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate how professional fitness trainers use four different social platforms; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube professionally and what type of content they create. It also explores the specific aspects of each social platform in terms of features or general perception that affect how professional fitness trainers experience them and use them in their professional practice. The qualitative study revealed that professional fitness trainers use all social platforms professionally; to build and sustain their social media community, to educate themselves with fitness knowledge, to make social connections and to advertise themselves as expert fitness trainers. The qualitative study also revealed the unique features of each social platform and how professional fitness trainers engage with same activities differently from one platform to another. The findings support the use of social platforms for fitness purpose professionally and can also inform the design of technology that uses social media to help people stay fit and share fitness information.

Abstract:
The effect of the perception of fitness on the acquisition of several basic interviewing skills was explored. Furthermore, the relationship between perceived and actual fitness was investigated, as well as the relationship between actual fitness and basic interviewing skills. The interviewing skills were eye contact, talk time, verbal following (topic change) and focus of subject verbalization.<br>The study consists of two parts. The first part explored the viability of altering an individual's perception of personal physical fitness. Fifty-four subjects were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control condition. Experimental subjects received positive feedback related to their physical fitness during a bicycle ergometer test of actual fitness. Control subjects received only neutral feedback. Results indicated that positive feedback worked to successfully alter perception of fitness among experimental subjects.<br>The second part of the study explored the effect of fitness perception on interviewing skill acquisition. Results indicated that increasing an individual's perception of personal fitness did not enhance skill acquisition. There was also no significant difference in skill acquisition among subjects with higher and lower levels of perceived fitness. It was further determined that no significant relationship existed between actual fitness and the acquisition of basic interviewing skills used in the study. Additionally, it was determined that although a significant relationship between perceived and actual fitness was evident for female subjects in the study, this relationship did not hold true for male subjects.

Abstract:
Peak oxygen uptake (VO2PEAK) in endurance exercise trained (ET =8) subjects (VO2PEAK = 61.7 1.6 ml 02.kg.min-1) was compared to the V02 PEAK of untrained (UT = 8) subjects (V02 PEAK = 38.4 1.7 ml 02 -kg.min1) after four hours of -6* head-down rest (HDR).Although both groups showed a reduction in blood volume (BV) following HDR, this decrement was greater for ET subjects (delta BV = -3.23 0.46 mi/kg; P <0.05). The ET subjects had a greater decrease in VO2=(delta 02E -5.58 1.05 ml 02-kg.min-1; P <0.05) than their UT peers (VO2PEAK = -2.44 0.79 ml02-kg.min-1). These data suggest that the greater reductions in VO2PE, observed for the ET group were associated with a greater BV loss resulting from 4 h of HDR prior to exercise.

Abstract:
Cardiovascular and hormonal responses to +700 head-up tilt (HUT: orthostatic challenge) were compared between six endurance exercise trained (ET) and six untrained (UT) subjects prior to and immediately following 4 hours of -60 head-down rest (HDR). The ET subjects showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in orthostatic tolerance time (pre syncopal symptoms) during post-HDR HUT, while no difference was observed between ET and UT groups in pre-HDR HUT. The volume regulatory hormonal responses were similar between ET and UT groups whether during HUT or HDR. The pre-syncopal subjects had a greater increase in plasma arginine vasopressin and less increase in plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone during HUT than was observed in non syncopal subjects. These data suggest that HDR deconditioning was more effective in the ET subjects.

In many real-world applications, fitness evaluation may be computationally complex and costly. In these cases, time is an essential subject in performance analysis of genetic algorithms. Therefore, genetic algorithms should provide good solutions in a short period of time. A promising approach to alleviate the computational cost of evaluations considers the fact that sometimes it is better to evaluate only selected individuals and estimate the fitness of the remaining individuals instead of evaluate a whole population. This work suggests the application of fitness estimation models in genetic algorithms. More specifically, it deals with estimation models based on supervised fuzzy clustering (Fuzzy C-Means) and unsupervised fuzzy clustering (Participatory Learning). The goal is to approximate the evaluation functions through the use of fitness estimation models, without significantly affect the quality of solutions. Initially, the fitness estimation models are compared and analyzed experimentally with other models already proposed in the literature. Their performance are evaluated using benchmark optimization problems found in the genetic algorithms literature. Next, the fitness estimation models are used to solve a real-world engineering problem, namely the train scheduling in a freight rail line. This is a typical case where the performance measure of each schedule demands a considerable amount of time. Once again, the performance of the fitness estimation models are evaluated experimentally, comparing their results with the results provided, for simple instances, by linear programming models and, for complex instances, by the classic genetic algorithm<br>Mestrado<br>Engenharia de Computação<br>Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

Abstract:
Purpose To evaluate the information provided by Polar Vantage V, a new generation of heart rate monitor/watch (HRM-watch) to the user, regarding the acute:chronic load ratio (ACLR), based onthe external and internal load measures and examine the measures against psychological and physiological measures before and during a threshold test with VO2max testing. Method A five-week prospective study with results and data collected during and after four normal training weeks and during a fifth week with a very high training load. The results from HRM-watchwere then evaluated against the results from physiological and psychological tests. Eight endurance runners were recruited. Results Differences in ACLR against the differences in HRR show a R2 value of 0.77 (p&lt;0.05). ACLR signicantly increased with an average of 0.33 from 0.93 to 1.26 (p=0.003, 95 % CI= 0.17 {0.49). Differences in ACLR against dierences in total mood disturbance (TMD) from POMS showin regression analyses a R2value of 0.67 (p=0.05). No significant difference was noted in neither resting HRV (p=0.3, 95% CI= -22.2 { 8.5) or standing HRV (p=0.15, 95% CI= - 4.15 { 20.8). Conclusion Based on the result of the present study it can be concluded that training status, well-being and present mood state can be predicted fairly good with the information from the internal and external load measurements from the Polar Vantage V. However, the power of present exploratory study was low due to a low number of included participants. Future research with greater number of participants and an improved study design is needed to verify these interesting findings.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine how personal trainers are experiencing their psychosocial work environment. Using the KASAM-theory we identify which factors contribute to the psychosocial work environment, and which factors that doesn’t. The methodology used in this study is a survey with a follow up interview. The survey contained 18 questions with closed answer options. The participants of the survey were personal trainers with the age of 18 years or above, residing in Sweden and with an employment in a wellness center. The survey was sent out by e-mail where participants also received a request to participate in an interview. Based on the results of the survey, the interview questions were created and three interviews were made. The results from the survey were compiled in figures and analyzed by the KASAM-theory. The interviews were also analyzed using the same theory. The results show that participants experience information and communication between them and manager, organization and management as a defective factor in the work environment. The conclusion of this study is that personal trainers experience their psychosocial work environment as very varied. There are different factors that have potential for development according to the KASAM-theory. The majority of participants state that they are motivated and committed to their work, which is an important part of experiencing comprehensiveness, manageability and meaningfulness.

Abstract:
Slutsats: För yngre individer visade preparaten ha en hämmande effekt på muskeltillväxten men för äldre individer verkade inte muskeltillväxten påverkas.<br>Background: To maintain a life with a high quality of life, it is important to have sufficient muscle strength to cope with everyday life and reduce injuries. Strength training can develop skeletal muscle and is considered a popular exercise method. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has increased in sports. The research situation was sparse among the younger population, but more research was found in the field of the older population. However, there was no research on the effect of different doses over a longer period of use. Purpose: The purpose of the literature review was to examine the use of the preparations (NSAIDs) and to clarify their effect on strength development, skeletal muscle growth and signals in the skeletal muscle in connection with strength training. Method: The systematic literature review was created with publications from the Pubmed and SPORT Discus databases, where 86 studies were identified. In order to answer the question, it resulted in nine studies in total. The validity of the selected studies was assessed, and all were of good quality. Results: Elderly people around the age of 65 were examined in five of nine studies, all except one showing no difference in skeletal muscle, while one showed a significant positive effect in muscle mass when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs compared to placebo. The remaining four studies were done on younger individuals around 25 years of age and spread in different directions. Where they showed that there was no difference in the fact that there was a decrease in strength development and skeletal muscle growth and that it inhibited signals but that the individuals also can do a greater work on the drugs. Conclusion: For younger individuals, the preparations were shown to have an inhibitory effect on muscle growth, but for older individuals, muscle growth did not appear to be affected.

Bringsén-Bornegrim, Mimmi. "Standing long jump compared to vertical jump as a field test for assessing leg power in firefighter trainees : A correlation study from a gender equality perspective." Thesis, Högskolan i Halmstad, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-44599.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Within the rescue service, a varied background is needed to increase the possibility of delivering equal service to the citizens. At present, there is a skewed gender distribution within the municipal rescue services, with only a couple of percent of the firefighters being women. Many women find it difficult to meet the physical limit values on recruitment tests. The standing long jump (SLJ) is used as a part of recruitment tests on many rescue services, to assess leg power. It is not clear though whether SLJ is the most appropriate field-test to assess leg power in firefighter trainees, with men and women mixed in the same group, as it has been argued that anthropometric factors, such as body height (BH), affects the result. Thereby we wanted to study the relationship between BH and SLJ, and compere SLJ with another field-test for measuring leg power, one that omits the variable BH. Aim: The aim was to study the strength of the relationship between body height and the jump length at standing long jump, for firefighter trainees. A second aim was to study the strength of the relationship between firefighter trainees' jump results of the two tests: standing long jump and vertical jump. Methods: The study was executed as an observational cross-sectional study. Three different measurements were carried out: BH, vertical jump (VJ) and SLJ. Correlation analyzes, with Pearson's correlation coefficient, were performed on BH in relation to SLJ, and VJ in relation to SLJ. Results: Fourteen (n = 14) firefighter trainees (women n = 5, men n = 9) met the inclusion criteria and participated in the study. Subjects' age, body mass index (BMI) and number of workouts per week were 29 ± 7 years old, 25 ± 2 kg/m2 and 4 ± 1 workouts (at least 30 minutes) per week. Results showed a significant moderate correlation between BH and SLJ (r = 0.572). Between the variables VJ and SLJ there were a significant strong correlation (r = 0.862). However, the results changed substantially when the analyzes were performed separately for men and women, with a very low correlation level (r = 0.106 respective r = 0.166) between BH and SLJ. For VJ and SLJ there were a moderate correlation level for men and low for women (r = 0.414 respective r = 0.387). Conclusion: The result from this study is in line with aforementioned work and supports the hypothesis that BH to some extent can affect the jump result at SLJ. Our study complements earlier work and indicates that these results are also applicable to firefighter trainees. The findings in this study indicates VJ could possibly be an alternative field test for SLJ, to assess leg power when recruiting new firefighters. Additional studies are required to investigate the correlation between SLJ and VJ with ad- ditional confounders, such as actual leg power, and also the correlation between VJ and fire- fighters heaviest among most common work tasks.

Abstract:
Aim The main aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal effects on cycling performance using a polarized and periodized scheme that was highly supervised and controlled. The second aim was to investigate the effect of using Hyperoxia. The questions used to address the aim were: (1) How does overall performance change after a six-week training intervention? (2) What is the time-course and pattern of performance changes to the training scheme? (3) How does the performance change within the groups?   Method Nineteen male and female cyclists started the study (13 male and 6 female), however only 12 completed it (8 male and 4 female). The characteristics for the 12 subjects were:  age (year) 33.6 ± 6.8, height (cm) 177 ± 9.1, body mass (kg) 73.4 ± 8.8. Using a randomized, double blind design, the test subjects were divided in to hyperoxia (HOT) (n = 6) and normoxia (NOT) (n = 6) training groups.  Over a six week period the subjects followed a controlled polarized periodization that included 15 high intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions (3 x 8 min, 3 x 8 + 4 min, 4 x 8 min &amp; 4 x 4 min) on maximal sustainable intensity (isoeffort) on a cycle ergometer. The dosage of oxygen was administered intermittently by the oxelerate device. A 20 min all out test was performed as pre- and post test.    Results The whole group (n = 12) increased mean power output (W) by 6.4 % (P = 0.002). The relative power output (W/kg) increased significantly 8.2 % (P = 0.0011). The HOT group (n = 6) increased their power output by 8.3 % (P = 0.028) and their relative power output increased by 9.4 % (P=0.011). The whole group (P = 12) significantly increased their VO2mean by 4.1 % (P = 0.03) and in the relative value by 5.4 % (P = 0.01) on the 20 min all out test. The whole group also had a significant increase in VO2peak of 3.7 % (P = 0.04). A very strong correlation could be found between the training data and the performance test.   Conclusions The training intervention was favourable for increasing performance and VO2peak in cycling. Försökspersonerna delades in i hyperoxi (HOT) (n = 6) och normoxi (NOT) (n = 6), studien var dubbelblind.

Akerson, Michael. "Investigating Personal Fitness Trainers' Qualifications." Doctoral diss., 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/6047.

Full text
Abstract:
A threefold approach was utilized to analyze the problem of defining personal fitness trainers' qualifications. First, the problem was explored nationally, internationally and locally. Within the local context, the history of the exercise science program, stakeholders and culture at the University of Central Florida and in the central Florida marketplace was examined. Next, a systematic literature review examined possible causes within the knowledge context, learning/motivational context and organizational/cultural context. Then, an original research study investigated the qualifications for Central Florida, Personal Fitness Trainers (PFTs) by examining the relationship(s) and/or differences between variables such as education, certification, years of experience and income as well as attitudes, opinions and beliefs (AOBs) regarding those variables. An online questionnaire was emailed to 196 PFTs in the central Florida area and utilized to assess qualifications as they relate to income. The 48 PFT participants were compared based on education (ED), certification (CE), and experience (EX) and their effect on income. There were no statistically significant differences in 2012 income based on (ED) level, F(4,26) = 2.283, p=.086. The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) were the preferred (CE) companies (ranked 1st or 2nd, 65% and 45% of the time respectively). From the 48 PFTs that answered the survey, 54% of PFTs agreed (A) or strongly agreed (SA) that a degree should be required in order to practice, 73% (A) or (SA) that (CE) is helpful in gaining employment, and 66% (A) or (SA) that a national board exam or license should be required to practice. The least number of (ED) courses was taken in biomechanics and business marketing. In conclusion, PFT level of education and certification type does not significantly affect income given the current system. PFTs agree that more stringent guidelines are needed to limit entrance into the profession to those who are more qualified. Abstract:
Nowadays, physical inactivity has become a global problem. According to the research, about 5.3 million deaths all over the world in 2008 could be attributed to inactivity [1]. However, it is enough to do a little exercise every day to reduce the risk of premature deaths by as much as 30 percent. Due to the increasing working pressure, people do not have enough time to go to gym and do exercises, which means that the design of multi-functional fitness chair is necessary so that people can do exercise at home at any time. There have already been many similar household fitness products in the market, but most of them take up large space and the training part is very simple. In comparison, the multi-function fitness chair designed in this thesis combines several fitness equipment together in one chair, so it would save a lot of space, and yet provides possibility to perform versatile exercise. The product was designed in Autodesk Inventor 2015, and finite element analysis was performed in Inventor 2015 and for checking the strength and safety of the design.

Abstract:
碩士<br>臺北巿立體育學院<br>運動器材研究所<br>98<br>The goal of this research was to investigate the difference of knee joint moment between fitness bicycle and elliptical trainer under the same speed and different speeds. The subjects were twelve young healthy males without any lower extremity injuries within six months. They were asked to pedal the fitness bicycle and elliptical trainer at 50 rpm and 70 rpm. We filmed the reflected markers during pedaling by using the Motion Analysis System to obtain the kinematics parameters. The kinetics parameters, gathered by the ATI Six-Axis/Torque Sensor System, were incorporated with the inverse dynamics formula to calculate the knee joint moment for analyzing the effect upon the knee joint by these two fitness equipments. The results are as follows. (1) The subjects’ ankle joint appears to have inversion or internal rotation when pedaling the elliptical trainer, whereas to have eversion or external rotation when pedaling the fitness bicycle. (2) The joint force of pedaling the elliptical trainer is significantly bigger than that of pedaling the fitness bicycle. At high speed, the joint force will increase during pedaling on the elliptical trainer, whereas the joint force of pedaling the fitness bicycle does not show any significant increase. (3) The peak value of joint moment for the fitness bicycle (70°~110°) occurs earlier than that of elliptical trainer (135°~180°), and the peak value of each joint moment in high speed is higher than that of in low speed.

Abstract:
This project aims to develop a conscious thinking about the dynamics that occurred during the Professional Internship, which took place in Fitness Academy of Lisbon’s University Stadium, in Avenida Prof Egas Moniz, under the supervision of the academy’s director and the collaboration of three colleagues, in the school year 2014/2015. The internship is inserted in the second year of the Master in Exercise and Health, in Faculdade Motricidade Humana (University of Lisbon), which goal is to teach the tools and methodologies that allow the promotion, conception and the implementation of exercising programmes. Ultimately, the main purpose is to improve a healthy condition and to prevent diseases, through the development of a document that justifies all the formation process which was done in the internship. This internship is the result of the pedagogic process, which includes the construction of knowledge, learning and skills’ development, under supervision. Therefore, this project allowed the approximation between the academic formation and the professional reality, articulating the theory into the practical professional role, also allowing the integration in the social reality. This is a fundamental component in the student’s formation. The initial part of the internship focused in the improvement and the evaluation of theoretical concepts and competences that were needed in order to develop the practical functions. After this, the work was more practical and the mail goals were: 1) to acquire competences to identify, to catalogue and to develop a critical analyse of the institution that provides services related to physical activity and health; 2) to acquire competences in order to prescript exercises and to do a personal follow-up, according to the client’s needs; 3) to evaluate the client’s physical condition and corporal composition; 4) follow-up the client’s performance, through the Evaluation and Counselling Department (Gabinete de Avaliação e Acompanhamento) do EUL; and, 5) personal follow-up of three clients of the Fitness Academy, evaluating (the corporal composition, cardiothoracic capacity, endurance, muscular flexibility and posture) and also advising specific training programmes, according to the clients’ needs and aspirations.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中國文化大學<br>運動教練研究所<br>95<br>The primary objective of this study is to investigate the obstacles and future challenges to the careers of qualified personal fitness trainers with the qualitative research method. The informants include six AFAA (Aerobic and Fitness Association of America) certified personal trainers who are presently working in Taipei with an average of 6.5 years training experience. The discussion covers the important aspects of the current condition of personal trainers in Taiwan, the essential features, the interactive relationship with fitness club members, the tendency toward the present market, and the possible vocational barriers and challenges. After the in-depth interviews, I realized that it is not difficult to become a personal trainer; however, for being a professional and competent trainer, it needs the accumulation of time and experiences, diligent management, hard-working, self-improvement, and more importantly self-discipline. Training personal trainers has presently become the main barrier to industrial development. If the fitness industry collaborates with colleges of physical education and sports to foster fitness professionals, not only can it provide future employment opportunities for students from physical education and sports science related fields, but it also retrieves the uneven quality of present certification programs through various organizations. In this way it forms a channel of self-growth and also builds up the primary source of future personal fitness trainers. The future challenge consists in the change of exercise styles and needs. A shift in trends and patterns of exercise is an inevitable social phenomenon. The adaptation to the vocational variation and clients’ varied requests is essential. Thus, penetrating the trends toward the fitness industry and developing professional capability are personal trainers’ efficient instruments in the career competition. In addition, correctly holding the expansion direction of personal trainer market and implementing a complete education and integrated management provide a better enterprise environment for personal fitness trainers on their professional development.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中正大學<br>外國語文學系英語教學研究所<br>107<br>This study investigates Taiwanese fitness trainers’ learning needs and the effects of a task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach when teaching English for specific purposes (ESP). Based on learners’ learning needs, the researcher-instructor has designed and implemented ESP learning tasks for learners to overcome work-related language difficulties. In this study, the learners are nine certified fitness trainers. The course comprises six three-hour sessions held once a week in Taichung, with a focus on imparting fitness instruction. The study addresses two research questions: 1. What are fitness trainers’ learning needs for ESP? 2. To what extent can TBLT be effective in ESP teaching? To answer these two research questions, needs analysis (NA) interviews, entry and exit performance measurements, teaching logs, and exit interviews data are collected. The data analyses include content analysis and a comparison between entry and exit performance. The findings reveal that different learners have diverse English learning difficulties that stem from previous learning experiences. Through TBLT and group work, learners are able to support and learn from each other. A second finding indicates that the power distance could affect the learners’ willingness to learn. TBLT is an effective approach to adopt in ESP teaching as it induces positive outcomes in various aspects. Four factors may affect the design and effectiveness of TBLT, namely, task authenticity, peer scaffolding, external pressures, and alignment with the needs analysis. The participants in this study consider that this ESP course is useful for their work practices, and most of them have expressed a willingness to attend the next ESP course.

The sixty testers of this research whose BMI value were over regular value (19.5-24.9) were from California Fitness Club and were divided into experimental group and comparative group equally. Each group had the eight-week losing weights lessons that took sixty minutes each lesson and three times a week and its exercise intensity of the most palpitations (220- age) must be between 60%-85%. In the mean time, experimental group should take one-to-one professional losing weights training and diet planning and yet comparative group should keep their food and drink regularly and the constant training frequency. Each tester took IN-BODY test and filled in food and drink condition questionnaire before and after training. This study was using the paired-sample t-test to analyze the differences between each variable. and got all significant standard to p< .05. The results were summarized as following: 1. On eight-week losing weights lessons interposing obese members’ body combination side, experimental group B’s after-test’s scores was significantly higher than pre-test. But the salary could be markedly influenced by sales performance and numbers of teaching session numbers. For factors affecting promotion, professionalism and achievement are basic abilities. However, during interviewing managers, they emphasized the experiences and positive attitudes. Therefore, as a qualified personal trainer, to get international license during school life could be necessary.
