Usami, Hirokuni. "The influence of the theories of Yin-Yang and the five elements on Japanese culture." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1989. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26426.

Full text
Abstract:
Perhaps no more than one percent of Japanese today have heard of Onmyodo or the Way of Yin and Yang. This in spite of the fact that it influenced Japanese culture and the people's way of thought as strongly as Buddhism, Shintoism, and Confucianism did. It is a system of belief based on the ancient Chinese theories of Yin and Yang and of the five elements and the magical practices that developed after it was introduced into Japan. Its traces are still found in the life of- today's Japanese. A good illustration of these is Jikkan Junishi (the ten celestial stems and twelve branches), which comprise one of the most important aspects of Onmyödó.(1) In the last days of the year and at the beginning of the New Year, the Chinese zodiacal designs for the New Year flood the daily lives of Japanese in the form of New Year's cards, calendars and ornaments for good luck. Thereby, the Japanese become ready to greet the New Year and to bid farewell to the Old year. In the minds of modern Japanese, the New Year and the Chinese zodiacal symbols are closely associated.

Blachford, Alistair M. "Five studies in life history evolution." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/33953.

Full text
Abstract:
Assortative mating by fitness has the potential population-level benefit of reducing migration load during times of environmental stasis, while allowing introgression of immigrant genetic variation in the event of environmental change. Assortative mating by fitness was examined with respect to within-population spread of a recombination modifier under selective sweep and mutation-selection balance scenarios. Only the latter scenario boosted modifier frequency, given a strength of assortative mating unlikely to be present in most species. In a second attempt to identify a new general advantage for sexual reproduction, the focus was on how inter-individual reproduction might reduce noise in inheritance and increase the power of selection. Individuals can experience good and bad "luck" at various stages of their life history, in any habitat, and it was found that combining gametes from two separate experiences of this ecological noise could indeed reduce noise in inheritance. The puzzle of small mammal population density cycles was approached from an evolutionary, rather than a population regulation perspective. An appropriate pattern of reproductive effort would seem key to survival through repeated population crashes to low numbers. Small mammals reproduce below their apparent potential through the decline and into the low phase of a cycle, and determining whether this reproductive pattern is adaptive is an important question. A standard cycling analytical model, the Rosenzweig-MacArthur, was carefully examined for the basis of this life history work, and found wanting even after considering several modifications. So an individual-based simulation was done. For simplicity and generality a novel mechanism was used: the "cumulative recent activity" of a population predicts several mortality causes, and has the property of delayed density dependence required to drive cycles. If animals cue from this quantity, then some controversy-causing experimental results might be explained. Branching theory and the simulation model showed that reproductive slowdown evolves under high mortality rates and, given a premium on short term persistence such as might exist at low numbers or densities, at low mortality rates. This explains the reproductive pattern observed in cycling mammals. The known reproductive suppression by stress physiology now appears to be adaptive, rather than inadvertent.

Shen, Chen. "Application of Fuel Element Combustion Properties to a Semi-Empirical Flame Propagation Model for Live Wildland Utah Shrubs." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3550.

Full text
Abstract:
Current field models for wildfire prediction are mostly based on dry or low-moisture fuel combustion research. To better study live fuel combustion behavior and develop the current semi-empirical bush combustion model, a laminar flow flat-flame burner was used to provide a convection heating source to ignite individual live fuel samples. In this research project, four Utah species were studied: Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii), canyon maple (Acer grandidentatum), big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma). Leaf geometrical parameters and time-dependent combustion behavior were recorded. Qualitative results included various combustion phenomena like bursting, brand formation and bending. Quantitative results included determination of best correlations for (a) leaf geometrical properties (individual leaf dry mass (mdry), thickness (Δx), leaf width (W) and leaf length (L)) and (b) combustion characteristics (e.g., time to ignition (tig), time of flame duration (tfd), time to maximum flame height (tfh), time to burnout (tbrn), and maximum flame height (hf,max)). A semi-empirical bush model was expanded to describe the combustion behavior of the three Utah species (Gambel oak, canyon maple and Utah juniper). Leaf placement and bush structure were determined from the statistical model. A new flame area simulation was explored in the semi-empirical bush model in order to improve the bush burning predictions.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we have developed a model to study the behavior of an extended version of evolutionary game &quot;Rock-Scissor-Paper&quot;, that is &quot;Five Elements&quot;. The origin of five elements are from &quot;Chinese five elements&quot; in which five different types of elements compete with each other in a similar way as in a SIR model. Elements are affecting each other in two different ways, either to compete with each other or to help some particular elements in resisting their superior elements. The competition and cooperation is linked in circle which initiates a steady state. The analytical expressions (mean field) and simulation results have been presented. We have made some basic simulations of the original &quot;Rock-Scissor-Paper&quot; in order to build a better understanding of this kind of evolutionary game, and to extend from three elements to five elements. One of the real examples of five elements we have studied is a game called &quot;Rock-Paper-Scissor-Lizard-Spock&quot;, which is a direct extension from the &quot;Rock-Scissor-paper&quot;. Cooperation in the game is expressed in form of either direct cooperation/help from different elements as in &quot;Chinese Five Elements&quot; or indirect help caused by direct competition. Based on the simulations, some characteristic behaviors of five elements have been found. Reaction rates and different competition probabilities have proven to be the critical part in the game.

Jones, Suzanne Tutt. "Story Generation in Five School-Aged Children with Language Impairment." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6143.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examined the story generations of five children with language impairment (LI) between the ages of 5;11 and 10;1 across the treatment sessions of a narrative-based intervention program designed to improve social communication. These stories were analyzed to find whether the participants would approach the task by describing the stimulus pictures or if their stories would reflect an episodic structure containing cause and effect relationships. Additionally, the stories were analyzed for inclusion of emotion words to discern the participants' awareness of the characters' emotions. There was a high degree of variability in the participants' performance; however, the majority of the stories were composed of picture descriptions, and most of the participants generated short stories with few episodic elements in response to the probes over the course of treatment. In terms of emotion word use, two of the participants increased their use of emotion words in later sessions. Overall the participants' performance on the story generation probe did not reflect their performance in other treatment tasks including shared book readings, story enactments, and journal writing. This was likely due to their disinterest or fatigue in the story generation task and stimuli, as well as their continued need for the clinician modeling that was present in the other treatment tasks. Future research is needed to determine effective treatments that help school-aged children with LI recognize goal-directed behavior and emotional content in stories.

Abstract:
It has been well established that copy number variation contributes substantially to genetic variation within human populations. However, the extent to which de novo and inherited copy number variants (CNVs) underlie human disease is not well known. In this thesis, I investigate the role of de novo and inherited CNVs in a wide range of developmental abnormalities. First, I compare disease associated and apparently benign CNVs for structural differences, with the aim of identifying distinguishing features of disease causing CNVs. I identified significant enrichments of protein-coding genes, protein-coding genes associated with disease in OMIM and miRNAs amongst disease associated disease. Conversely, inherited CNVs observed in healthy individuals show depletions of these features. Following this, I employ functional enrichment approaches to identify the copy number variable genes within these de novo CNVs that contribute to the patient’s developmental abnormalities. I predict candidate genes for 143 different developmental abnormalities, with 65% of the candidate genes not having been previously associated with disease in OMIM. Through examining the distribution of these candidate genes within the patient’s CNVs, I found evidence of extensive pleiotropy and epistasis as well as a small number of simple additive effects. Finally, I extend my analyses to examine the role of inherited CNVs as the underlying cause of human developmental disorders. I implicate inherited CNVs and their overlapping copy number variable genes in the underlying causes of 45 human developmental abnormalities. Additionally, I re-examine the patients possessing both de novo CNVs and inherited CNVs using functional enrichment analyses. I reveal significant enrichments for a greater number of human developmental abnormalities when combining both the de novo and inherited CNVs, suggesting it is de novo mutations in combination with the inherited genomic background that are responsible for many instances of human developmental abnormalities.

Ruangsan, Phramaha Niras. "Vijjādhammakāya: Presentation of the essential elements and core doctrines through the translation of its five primary texts." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13746.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to contribute significant knowledge in particular to the field of Buddhist Studies regarding ‘Vijjādhammakāya (abbr., Vd)’ taught by Sot Chanthasaro Bhikkhu (1884-1959 CE) in Thailand which had been thought to be lost some time 500 years after the Buddha passing. As its method of meditation teachings diverges from what is now considered orthodox Theravada teaching on meditation, it is sometimes considered as the esoteric meditation within the mainstream tradition. The core doctrines of Vd have not been subjected to academic study before. This therefore research focuses on presenting its core doctrines and other important elements utilizing the translation into English of its five primary pedagogical texts: the Path and Result (Thang Mak Phon), Manual of the Abbot (Khumue Somphan) and Extraordinary Path and Result Volume 1-3, complied during the lifetime of its founder. Due to the vast amount of material and limitation of space and time a systematic comparison of Vd doctrines with traditional Theravada Buddhism has been beyond the scope of this thesis. For the same reasons, the translation is presented in an English version only.

Gao, Guangping. "Transcriptional Analysis of Bm-1 Repetitive Elements in the genome of Bombvx mori." FIU Digital Commons, 1991. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3616.

Full text
Abstract:
Bm-1 repetitive element family represents a group of sequences in the genome of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori. and is found to be transcribed. There are about 3X more Bm-1 cytoplasmic transcripts as compared to their nuclear counterparts. The size range of Bm-1 nuclear transcripts is greater than that of their cytoplasmic species. Alpha- amanitin inhibition and nuclear ”run-on” experiments demonstrated that 80-85% of the Bm-1 transcripts are produced by RNA polymerase II; the other 15-20% may be transcribed by polymerase I and/or III. Sharply contrasting with most of the transcribed SINE families, the Bm-1 transcripts are dramatically enriched in both poly A+ and polysomal RNA fractions. Compared to Bm-1 transcripts in total RNA there are 2-4X more Bm-1 transcripts in the poly A+ RNA population and up to 22X more in the polysomal RNA fractions. This strongly suggests that the transcripts of the Bm-1 family may be involved in translation. To express exogenous Bm-1 elements in vivo and explore their effect(s) on transcriptional actitivity in Bombyx mori cells in culture and their possible function in gene regulation, two members of the Bm-1 family, clone 1 and clone 10, have been subcloned into a selectable and inducible plasmid vector and were named as pG/1 and pG/10, respectively. Subsequently, they were introduced into the BmN and Bm-5 Bombyx mori cell lines by electro-transfection. A G418 (Geneticin) resistant Bombyx mori cell population has been selected out, following transfection.

Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Department of Animal Sciences and Industry<br>Elizabeth A. E. Boyle<br>Light emitting diode (LED) and fluorescent (FLS) lighting effects on enhanced pork loin chops, beef longissimus dorsi and semimembranosus steaks, ground beef, and ground turkey displayed in two retail display cases set up with similar operational temperatures were evaluated using visual and instrumental color, Enterobacteriaceae (EB) and aerobic plate counts (APC), internal product and case temperatures, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Visual discoloration of the five meat products increased (P<0.05) as display time increased. Beef longissimus dorsi steaks, ground beef, and the superficial portion of beef semimembranosus steaks had less (P<0.05) visual discoloration under LED lighting than FLS. Compared to FLS, pork loin chops under LED lighting had higher (P<0.05) L* values and a lower (P<0.05) a/b ratio. The deep portion semimembranosus steak under LED was redder (P<0.05) and the superficial portion had a lower (P<0.05) a/b ratio; LED deep and superficial portion semimembranosus steaks had higher (P<0.05) saturation index values at 5.18 and 4.47, respectively, on d 0 than FLS. Pork chops under LED lighting had lower (P<0.05) APC populations than FLS by the end of display. Enterobacteriaceae populations fluctuated throughout display on ground turkey under FLS lighting while populations remained stable under LED. APC populations increased as display time increased for pork loin chops, ground beef and ground turkey, but not beef longissimus dorsi steaks possibly due to initial case-ready postmortem age. As display time increased, EB populations increased (P<0.05) for pork loin chops, ground beef and ground turkey. The internal temperature of all products, except beef longissimus dorsi steaks, was lower (P<0.05) in the LED case. FLS case temperatures were higher (P<0.05) by 0.56 to 1.11°C than LED over the duration of the study. Pork loin chops, ground turkey, and beef semimembranosus steaks had higher (P<0.05) TBARS values by 0.06 to 0.24 mg malonaldehyde/kg under LED lighting, but lighting type did not affect (P>0.05) lipid oxidation of beef longissimus dorsi steaks or ground beef. LED lighting results in lower display case temperatures, lower internal product temperatures, and extended color life; however, lipid oxidation was increased in some cuts under LED lighting.

Abstract:
This study was conducted in two locations: Pucará (2,413m above sea level) and Mojandita (2,922m above sea level), both of which are found in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. The objectives of this study were to: characterize the morphological and agronomic traits as well as the overall quality of the ten amaranth accessions in this study; identify the accessions with the highest yield and biomass; determine the nutritional characteristics of the experimental accessions; and determine the cost of production of amaranth per hectare. The following null hypothesis was assumed: the agronomic and nutritional characteristics of the ten accessions in this study are equal in both locations. A randomized block design with ten treatments and three repetitions was employed for each location. The following tests of significance were performed: Tukey test at the 5% significance level for accessions, DMS at 5% for locations and Combined Analysis for the variety x location interaction. The following lines were used: ECU-0014, ECU-0113, ECU-2210, ECU-4737, ECU-4744, which represented pale-seeded grain types, and ECU-0069, ECU-0082, ECU-0102, ECU-0123 and ECU-0162 represented dark-seeded grain types. These accessions were analyzed for: plant height, diameter of the base of the stem, stem length, panicle length, grain/plot yield. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that no significant difference exists between the accessions on the basis of plant height and stem length in either location. For stem diameter, panicle length, and yield, however, significant differences among the accessions were detected. Between locations, the most promising results were observed in Pucará. The accession ECU-2210 gave the highest yield in Mojanda, with 1,300 kg/ha, while the accession ECU-0014 had the highest yield in Pucará, with 1,400 kg/ha. Overall, the best protein and iron content was observed in Mojanda; the accessions ECU-0162 and ECU-4744 had the highest percentage of protein, with 14.93% and 14.58% respectively. The highest observed iron content was 465.0 ppm in the accession ECU-0102. The cost of producing one hectare of cultivated amaranth grain is $1,543.95. The sale of this investment totaled $2,520, giving a cost-benefit ration of $0.63. Growing the accessions ECU-0612 and ECU-4744 is recommended if high protein content is desired, while the accession ECU-0102 is recommended in order to obtain the highest iron content. To obtain the highest yield per square meter, the accessions ECU-2210 is recommended at altitudes of 2,900m above sea level, while ECU-0014 is recommended for altitudes less than 2,600m. Based on the results of this study, it is not recommended that amaranth be planted at altitudes higher than 3,000m.

Dadson, Daniel K. "Impact of Environmental Classification on Steel Girder Bridge Elements Using Bridge Inspection Data." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27772.

Full text
Abstract:
State Departments of Transportation (DOT's) have established Bridge Management Systems (BMS) with procedures to aid in estimating service lives of bridge components and elements. Service life estimates, together with cost information, are used to develop life-cycle costs of bridges. These estimates are necessary to prioritize and optimize bridge improvement programs within budgetary constraints. Several factors, including age, traffic, and environment have been identified in current BMS literature as being directly responsible for the deterioration of bridge components or elements. However, no formal methodology exists to determine the effects of the environment. Estimating bridge elements service lives, without considering the effect of environmental factors, could potentially lead to biased estimates. A methodology is proposed using statistical analysis to determine the effects of environmental regions on service life estimates of steel girder bridge component (concrete deck) and element/protective system (girder paint) using bridge inspection field data collected by bridge inspectors. Further, existing deterioration models are incapable of using the non-numeric element level inspection data, which most state DOT's have been collecting for nearly thirty years per Federal Highway Administration guidelines. The data format used were the numerical condition appraisal scale (9 through 0) for concrete deck component, and the letter condition appraisal (G-F-P-C) for steel girder paint element. The methodology proposed an environmental classification system for use in BMS programs. In addition, least squares mean and corresponding standard errors and also means and corresponding standard deviations of service lives at the component and element/protective system levels were estimated. The steel girder paint estimated service lives can be used in scheduling maintenance, repair and rehabilitation operations, and also in life-cycle costs analysis at the project and network levels. Because of limitations in the concrete deck data sets, the estimated concrete deck service lives are not true estimates of their service lives but do reflect the influence of environmental exposure characteristics on their performance.<br>Ph. Du, Preez Karlien. "An exploration of the occupational-life-trajectories of five young men in the Heideveld community." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80039.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MOccTher)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Heideveld, a suburb that forms part of the “Cape Flats”, is plagued by high levels of crime, gangsterism, unemployment and relative poverty. I became specifically interested in the occupations of the young men in Heideveld, as I often observed them loitering in the streets, at an age when they should have been in school, studying or starting a career. This led me to wonder about the repertoire of occupations that they had performed over the course of their lives, i.e. their occupational-life-trajectories. I became interested in the influence that the environment and their personal attributes had on the occupations that they performed over time. Guided by the Person-Environment-Occupation model as a conceptual tool I decided to explore the occupational-life-trajectories of men between the ages of 20 and 25 throughout the course of their life, up to their current age. At the organisation where I volunteered during my time in Heideveld, there was a weekly programme for the children and young women (aged 12 to 22), but nothing for young men, which prompted my interest in doing research about this age group. My initial thinking was to form the theoretical basis from which an occupation-based intervention group could be developed. I intended to explore what had motivated occupational participation throughout their lives, how certain occupations developed over time and the influence of the environment on their occupations. Snowball sampling was applied to gain access to the participants. Using a qualitative approach I combined a method called PhotoVoice with individual, narrative interviews, in order to collect data on the occupational-life-trajectories of five young men from Heideveld. PhotoVoice is a participant-based method that allowed the interviewees to take photos of occupations that they have performed throughout their lives. The photographs were used to facilitate the interview process along with two or three guiding questions. Within-case and cross-case analysis were used to find themes that pertained to the aims of the study. I uncovered five themes in my analysis: “Ons gee nie krag weg nie/We don’t give away power”, “Ons het saam geloop/We ‘hang out’ together”, “Ek het baie probleme by die huis gehet/I had many problems at home”, “Die lewe is swaar hier buite/Life is hard out here” and “Ek wil net uit hierdie plek kom/I just want to get away from this place”. I found that the environment played a large role in the occupational-life-trajectories of the participants. I also found that the participants’ sense of masculinity, gender and identity affected their occupational choices and participation. I explain the peer nature and motivational factors influencing gangsterism and drug use as they manifested in the young men’s lives. I concluded that an occupation-based intervention programme might address certain aspects such as occupational choice and exposure, but that wider, more long-lasting intervention was necessary to truly make a difference in the occupational-life-trajectories of young men in Heideveld. After taking the support structures in the physical environment into consideration, recommendations were made in terms of the family unit, the peer group, education, skills training and community empowerment. Furthermore, as the organisation already serves boys between 10 and 14 years and a greater impact may be possible at this life stage, more detailed recommendations were developed regarding a possible occupational therapy intervention programme.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Heideveld, ‘n voorstad wat deel vorm van die Kaapse Vlaktes, gaan gebuk onder hoë vlakke van misdaad, bende bedrywighede, werkloosheid en relatiewe armoede. Ek het vyf temas ge-identifiseer gedurende my analise: “Ons gee nie krag weg nie/We don’t give away power”, “Ons het saam geloop/We ‘hang out’ together”, “Ek het baie probleme by die huis gehet/I had many problems at home”, “Die lewe is swaar hier buite/Life is hard out here” en “Ek wil net uit hierdie plek kom/I just want to get away from this place”.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, May, 2020<br>Cataloged from the official PDF of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 135-140).<br>Mechanical counterpressure (MCP) spacesuits offer several advantages over traditional gas-pressurized suits including lower energy cost of transport, reduced risk of decompression due to suit tear or puncture, and increased astronaut comfort. The BioSuit[superscript TM] is an MCP concept being developed at MIT primarily for planetary extravehicular activity (EVA) on the Moon and Mars. In this thesis we present the initial design and testing of several key parts of the life support system for the BioSuit[superscript TM]. First, a breathing compensation bladder that covers the chest and is pneumatically continuous with the helmet is discussed. This bladder eases the burden of respiration associated with constrictive garments and adapts to the changing volume of the chest to provide equalized pressure across the torso. The initial results of laboratory testing of the airflow and pressure maintenance of a bladder-helmet system on a mannequin are presented. Second, thermal modeling of a BioSuit[superscript TM] EVA on the lunar and Martian surfaces was conducted to assess the performance of MCP spacesuit garments in protecting astronauts from the extreme temperatures and harsh radiation environments of those locations. This modeling included new proposed radiation protection and insulating materials as well as a passive elastic compressive layer. Results were computed for both male and female astronauts, helping to identify suit design differences that will be needed to accommodate both men and women who will conduct future EVAs. This work is used to inform future design requirements for the suit's thermal management system. Overall, this research advances the development of life support systems for a full MCP spacesuit and lessons learned can be applied for future engineering prototypes.<br>by Jeremy Paul Stroming.<br>S.M.<br>S.M. Abstract:
The present study was designed to examine the extent to which research articles focusing on Black/African Americans are published in Black and multicultural mental health journals. Study data shows these articles are few in number. Additionally, the number of such articles written by authors with an affiliation to Historical Black Institutions (HBI) and/or United Negro Colleges and Universities Member Institutions (UNCFMI) were examined. It was found that very few scholars publishing articles of this type were affiliated with HBI, while no UNCFMI scholars published articles in these journals. A content analysis of four journals published between 1988 and 1992, selected as representative of Black and multicultural journals, showed that the four journals included articles on Black/African Americans to varying degrees. Implications for counselors, study limitations and directions for future research conclude this study.

Abstract:
Introduction Child sexual abuse is a common problem. Psychological and behavioural problems in children and adults who have experienced child sexual abuse have been associated with the abuse. Little research has been conducted which has been long-term, prospective, involved substantiated sexual abuse, included a control group, took into account mediating factors, utilised multiple data sources, relied on standardised measures and had a high follow-up rate. Aim The aims of this study were to compare a cohort of sexually abused young people with a group of nonabused peers and to establish predictors of psychological and behavioural outcome. Method This study was a follow-up which was long-term, prospective, involved a sample of children with substantiated sexual abuse, included a control group, took into account mediating factors, utilised multiple data sources, relied on standardised measures and had a high follow-up rate. Eighty-four sexually abused young people were followed up five years after presenting to Childrens Hospitals Child Protection Units for sexual abuse and were compared to a group of 84 nonabused young people of similar age and sex. The two groups were compared on the basis of demographic variables, family functioning, mothers mental health and life events; the outcome measures of depression, self-esteem, anxiety, behaviour, criminal activity, alcohol and other drug use, eating problems, running away, suicide attempts, self-injury, hopefulness, despair and attributional style; and potential mediating factors such as further notifications to the Department of Community Services, receipt of psychological treatment, legal action against offenders and victims compensation. Potential predictors of outcome were (1) demographic variables, (2) sexual abuse characteristcs, (3) intake data and (4) five year follow-up variables. Main findings Follow-up rates were 81percent (n equals 68) for cases and 89percent (n equals 75) for controls. Five years after presenting for the sexual abuse, the sexually abused young people were performing more poorly than their nonabused peers on various measures of psychological state and behaviour. Although the abused children had experienced more negative life events (p<.001), were from lower socio-economic groups (p<.0001), had more changes in parent figures (p<.001) and had mothers who were more psychologically distressed (p equals .03), multiple regression analysis showed that after allowing for these and other demographic and family factors, there were still significant differences between the groups after the 5 years. The abused children displayed more disturbed behavior (p equals .002), had lower self-esteem (p<.001), were more depressed or unhappy (p<.001) and were more anxious (p equals .03) than controls. Sexually abused children had significantly higher levels of bingeing (p equals .02), self-injury (p equals.009) and suicide attempts (p equals .03). Significant predictors of psychological and behavioural outcome were significantly related to family and parent functioning variables. Abuse status was not a significant predictor when offered to each of the predictive models. Significant predictors of outcome included the following intake variables: family functioning, mothers mental health, whether parents were employed or not, behaviour scores, prior notifications for neglect, history of parental discord and whether there were caregiver changes or not prior to intake. The classification of the index sexual abuse event as indecent assault and whether there were notifications for sexual abuse prior to the index event also significantly predicted outcome. Five year follow-up variables which were significant predictors of outcome were the young persons age, number of negative life events, attributional style, self-esteem, depression, number of parent changes, anxiety, despair, whether there were notifications for abuse/neglect after intake and having a parent with a history of drug/alcohol problems. Conclusions Difficulties associated with child sexual abuse continue for some years after the abuse event. Child sexual abuse needs to be considered as a possible antecedent of behaviour and psychological difficulties in young people. Treatment and monitoring should continue for some years after the abuse. Treatment may need to be directed more towards young peoples psychological states rather than focusing specifically on the sexual abuse. Family and parent functioning may need to be addressed early in order to prevent some of the behavioural and psychological difficulties associated with the long-term outcome of child sexual abuse.

Abstract:
The following lines of white-seeded amaranth were tested in three locations within the Imbabura province of Ecuador: Ecu-0113, Ecu-0014, Ecu-2210, Ecu-4737, and Ecu-4744. The three locations used were Caranqui, Urcuquí, and Pucará which are 2228, 2423, and 2513 meters above sea level respectively. The objectives of this study were: 1) to identify which of the five experimental amaranth lines respond best at each altitude, 2) to establish which of the three locations is most appropriate for cultivation, 3) to understand the vegetative period of the five lines in each location, 4) to analyze which of the five experimental lines possesses the best characteristics in regard to yield, and 5) to determine the cost of producing one hectare of amaranth. The hypothesis was that at least one of the five amaranth lines has a different response in each of the three locations. A randomized block design with five treatments (varieties) and three repetitions in each location was used. Tests of significance were conducted via the Tukey method at 0.05 examining stem length, panicle length, yield, and days to harvest for all varieties and locations. Combined analysis was used to evaluate variety interaction by location. Significant differences in stem length were observed among the different locations and varieties. The Ecu-0113 variety reached lengths of 1020.00 mm. In regard to panicle length, significant differences were also observed among different locations and varieties. The most promising locations were Urcuquí and Caranqui while the most promising varieties were Ecu-0113 and Ecu-4737. Significant differences in grain yield were also observed among the different locations and varieties. In the Urcuquí area, the Ecu-0113 variety had the highest yield with a yield of 2404.24 kg/ha. In the Caranqui and Pucará areas, the Ecu-2210 variety had the highest yields with values of 1605.88 and 833.99 kg/ha respectively. The Ecu-4744 variety was the first ready to harvest in all three locations while the variety Ecu-2210 was the last. The production of one hectare of amaranth resulted in a cost-benefit ratio of 2.48 which means that for every dollar invested, $1.48 USD was recovered. In the Imbabura province, Urcuquí and Caranqui can be considered favorable environments for cultivation and Ecu-0113 and Ecu-2210 were the varieties that exhibited the greatest production potential. We recommend planting the Ecu-0113 variety in Urcuquí and the Ecu-2210 variety in Caranqui and Pucará to obtain maximum grain yield.

Abstract:
碩士<br>東方設計學院<br>文化創意設計研究所<br>105<br>The main purpose of mythology is to explain the origin of creation and it does not necessarily correlate with facts and history. The science in ancient times is construed as superstition nowadays, and the modern superstition might just be the science in ancient times. The Chinese Five Elements is composed of wood, fire, soil, metal, and water. The Five Elements has been widely used and popularized in all aspects of our lives without us even knowing; aspects such as Chinese medicine, geomancy, numerology, Chinese Fortune Calendar, design, etc. With the deification of the Chinese Five Elements, the original meaning of the elements have been confused with mythology. This makes the Chinese Five Elements to become a more superstitious concept. For example, people worship the Five Battalion Generals and the Five Flags as Gods in Taiwan temples. The Five Elements are also closely regarded as directions. In The Chinese Astronomy, the dragon, tiger, phoenix and turtle represent the four directions East, West, South, and North. The ancients also called them The Four Gods or The Four Sacred Beasts. The Chinese Five Elements is an abstractive symbolism and its characteristics are applied in all things. The Western medicine in the past did not understand the correlation of the Five Elements and it’s effect on the human body. So they often make jokes when Traditional Chinese Medicine treating headaches not on the head and foot pains not on the foot. The structural symbols of the Five Elements can be considered as a way of thinking for the world. If divided into just any single element, its essence would be meaningless. But when formed together as a structural field then its meaning instantly becomes very vest and rich. The implication of the Chinese Five Elements in our world is endless. The environment we live in has already been predefined by the Five Elements. For example, each county in Taiwan has its own Elemental value. However, the operation of the Five Elements flows like “chi”. This is to say that the filed is in an ever-changing procedure. This procedure recombines, rearranges, and recalculates at all times and is therefore, effecting all biological forms of life at all times. After understanding the classification and the individual attribute of the Five Elements, there is no need to fall into the same misconceptions of the ancient superstition. Although each person may live in a very different environment, if we can all use different residential designs in accordance with the attribute of the Five Elements, then everyone will be able to easily enjoy and use this gift of the Five Elements from nature. That is, if we can think and use more of this concept in all aspects of living, such as in food, clothing, shelter, and transportation, it will be readily to create a more suitable environment for everyone. In summary, the Five Elements concept is applied in life and the Five Elements concept can be applied in design.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>數學系<br>91<br>We know that a conic is determined by five points. With help of Pascal's theorem, we can construct only one conic from given five ordinary points. The study of this research is focused on pointwise constructions of conics from given "any" five elements---no matter points or straight lines. After introducing the constructions of the double elements of the involution, which plays an important role in the constructions of conics, we construct conics from five given ordinary points or straight lines based on the deductions of Pascal's theorem, Brianchon's theorem, Desargues' involution theorem and its dual theorem. Then we analyze the constructions assuming that the ordinary point is the point at infinity or that the ordinary straight line is the line at infinity, etc…. At last, through the interactive dynamic software of geometry, Cabri Geometry II, fifty-three cases of constructions of conics from given any five elements are explicated and concluded.

碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>建築研究所<br>107<br>Complex architecture must contain many different functional elements, which are not necessarily related to the function or type of the building, but can play multiple roles in different situations. This thesis attempts to explore the diversification of four different types of components - shared room, infiltrated courtyard, derived street, extended core - under different context, through the reading of architectural design. Analyze how it responds to public and private, external and internal, cohesive and discrete, material and immaterial, and so on. However, this element is not only a tool, but also a continuation of the context. It refers to a medium that can be inclusive and multi-meaning. Its multi-value characteristics can make space development produce continuity and integrity with each other, and At the same time, the relationship between contrdictions and conflicts is eliminated. The point is not on the physical use of the component itself, but on how it motivates activities, events, and even ideologies, making space a place. At the same time, the essence of the elements can be changed, transformed or even replaced according to the changes of different living habits and functions, and further establish a new spatial order. Full text
Abstract:
Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) wrote the Gorinsho ("Book of Five Rings") at the end of his life. The text is divided into five sections, “Earth,” “Water,” “Fire,” “Wind,” and “Space;” the first three introduce and explain both military strategy and warfare of his school, Niten-ichi-ryū. “Wind” is a critique of the tendencies Musashi noticed in other sword schools, and “Space” describes the concept of warfare and how to embody its “true way” (though this scroll is evidently incomplete). There are many English translations, yet I make the claim that one more is necessary. Since its first translation in 1974 to its most recent in 2009, the Gorinsho’s meaning has been ill represented in English and no extant translation is suitable for scholarly reference. These translations suffer primarily from three flaws: fundamental translation errors, the effacing of cultural references, and an apparent lack of knowledge concerning the Gorinsho’s textual history. The source text for these problematic English translations is invariably the Hosokawa family manuscript, a wholly unsuitable manuscript for translation. In recent years, the Harima Musashi Kenkyūkai, a Japan-based research group, has done much worthwhile scholarship on the Gorinsho and has compiled a new annotated edition of the text based on a thorough examination of all extant manuscripts. My translation is based on their authoritative edition and it benefits greatly from their research. This thesis endeavors to make clear the case that a new scholarly Gorinsho translation is necessary and provide a preliminary, annotated translation to fulfill that need.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>應用藝術所<br>91<br>The content of Chinese thoughts developed through 5,000 years is rich and profound which may inspire splendid design concepts, but was usually neglected by most designers. In great Chinese cultural treasure, the originality resource is inexhaustible in supply and always available for use. It is worthy for us to explore continuously, and make use of in designing. Among the traditional Chinese thoughts, the " Yin and Yang " points out the two kinds of equilibrium force with mutual growth and decay of conflicts existed in the universe and mankind society, whereas the "Five primary elements" are the basic essences constituting the universe. In the concrete image aspect, they represent the physical world''s five basic kinds of materials. In abstract symbol meaning, they represent the five basic kinds of spirit attributes in the view of Chinese universe, and these five spirit attributes control the creation, the cycling, and the combination of everything in the world. Among these five elements, there are chain relations of promotion and restriction for each element to act on the specific corresponding element. This idea of the mutual production and destruction among the five elements has developed as the “logic of inference” in Chinese science system and has rooted into the daily life of Chinese. By analyzing the image characteristics of the five elements from their spirit attributes, a symbolized system of the five elements based on the mutual production and destruction among the five elements can be concluded. This system can be applied to the form analysis and interpretation of designs. Although the origins a lot of product designs may not be attributed to the concept of the “yin and yang” or the “five elements,” they can be insightfully interpreted from the view point of the “yin and yang” or the “five elements.” In furniture design, considering the relationship between furniture and person as well as the impact of the usage of materials upon this relation, is always a challenging subject. There is no restriction in implementing materials in design today. Materials from anyplace, from any process can be adopted the medium for design creation. So this design project made use of the mutual promotion relation among the five elements to develop a series of side tables. We started from interpreting the most primitive literal meaning of the mutual promotion relation among the five elements to form the foundation for inspiring ideas, then progressed from this foundation by logic deduction and association to stimulate and devise ideas, and converted these idea into final design concepts for each of the five mutual promotion relation. These design concepts were comprehensively developed and presented as 1:1 prototypes of side table finally.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中華大學<br>景觀建築學系<br>104<br>The theory of Five-elements in ancient China integrates the relationships between the human body potency, phenomena and four seasons in nature. It also explains the interaction of the balance between internal of human bodies and the environment. At first, this research is focused on the collecting literatures of the Five-elements theory. According to the documents, it is possible to integrate and analysis the cooperation of Five-elements between the human bodies, Nature-Based Therapy (NBT), and Therapeutic Landscape. In addition, in the 19 Century Benjamin Rush, United States Psychiatry physician, advance a new theory that human recover their health through the experiences with the natural environment. The concept of “going through the nature” can help the body recover energy, strength and spirits. Since the pace of modern living is very fast, so most of the people want to reduce the signs of their diseases quickly. Therefore, in order to achieve fast healing, they will focus on pathological changes of mainstream medicine and ignore factors arising from the disease. Fortunately, in recent years, medical sciences in Taiwan pay more and more attentions in natural treatment which including body, mind, spirits, and also in studying the interaction between humans and the environment. However, natural medicine and therapeutic landscape will be as the second major aspect of this paper. According to explanation of the literature, we try to establish a set of general design principles for landscape design by using the Five-elements. At the same time, the analysis of case studies based on the landscape components and five-elements is estimated. However, we hope that there will be more perfect medical places for healing and curing by applying the five-elements in Therapeutic Landscape.

It researches into two parts, creative concepts analysis and creative expression methods, and it concludes the five elements into “shape”, “color”, and “implications” to respond to the concept of the inter-promoting relations of the five element with the theories of Extinction (Shengshu) and Generation (Cheng-Shu) stated in the River Diagram (Hetu) and the Matches of Yin and Yang. The work connects to the presentation form of Stabile Sculpture, which is also named "Mobile" by Calder, utilizing Tiffany’s working method in stained glasses’ color presentation to construct its innovative structure and design. Through five elements’ characteristics of flowing with the Qi and mutual balance, the series of “Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water” were given the beautiful implication of five elements’ inter-promoting relations, and so such works are given deeper cultural implications. It is good for applying as space decoration and deliberation to present the unique oriental style and create a new atmosphere for the surroundings.

Abstract:
This practice-led research project investigates how Tibetan Buddhist concepts of the Five Elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space - as the substance of all things and processes, can be integrated into a contemporary painting practice. I develop my studio practice as an effective and original integration of Buddhist philosophical insights with immersion in the Australian landscape and an active engagement with the contemporary culture of painting. Contemporary Tibetan and Australian artists, both indigenous and non-indigenous, along with my Dzogchen Tibetan Buddhist practice and time spent in elemental landscapes with Australian indigenous elders and artists, serve as context for my studio research. Drawing on various cultural experiences and integrating them opens up the potential of painting as a field within which different philosophical, cultural, formal and material influences can be brought together into a fluid exchange. I explore the interface of Eastern philosophy and Western art through a contemplative art practice that draws on the philosophical theories and iconography of the Five Elements represented in the Tibetan and Indian Vajrayana tradition of Buddhism. Engaging with the natural philosophy of the Five Elements in relation to the genius loci, I develop codes corresponding to aspects of landscape using organic form, rhythms of energy and underlying geometry to symbolize each element. Exploring the intersection of figuration and abstraction, I employ the Five Elements to abstract the Australian landscape and apply the intrinsic qualities of each element to transform landscape in terms of colour, shape, light, luminosity and meaning. Activating the Five Elements in response to the Australian landscape I completed five bodies of work responding to the genius loci from landscapes as diverse as Lake Mungo, the Glasshouse Mountains, Kakadu, Central Western Desert and Mystery Bay. This series of paintings provided an extended sense of space and timelessness; a sense of interconnectedness where internal and external worlds are in harmony and contemplative states naturally arise.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄大學<br>創意設計與建築學系碩士班<br>107<br>Traditional Chinese Feng Shui has a long story before thousands of years, and there are many factions in the Famen, but no matter how many theoretical patriarchal, there is a constant basic law which is the concept of five line elements. Since ancient time, the five lines is Chinese civilization or it is a systematic concept which compatible with the Taoist School, it extensively use in medicine, the general, the fate, acrobatics, divination and other traditional five-operative aspects, the earliest records are found in "Shang Shu Hongfan" during the spring and Autumn period of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. There are five kinds of basic figurative and abstract dynamic forms in the process of the evolution of gram and yin and yang by the concrete meaning of the five elements. In essence, in humanistic thought, also from entity to abstraction, in the structure of yin and yang five elements cover everything. However, Feng Shui in the historical source of inheritance, through the time changes and evolution of civilization, there have historical literature records from generations to generations. From the Earth Yi method, the Guo Pu to define the word "Feng shui"," Tang," the management of the geographical fingers "... Xu Weizhi, the brother of Victoria, “the son of the geographical man”... and so on, contains the theory of five shape of naturalists which remains as usual. The influence of naturalists culture is more implicit and deeper than Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism. Also, it silently attached to the logic of philosophical thinking unconsciously in the Chinese cultural system, especially in the period of the development of Song and Ming Confucianism. Six theories of the five elements, began in the "Shang Shu Hongfan" in this book, the statement of the five elements has been pushed to the 4000 years ago. In the pre-Qin period, there was the record which related to the beginning of the facies operation. From the Shang Dynasty, Oracle had recorded from Han dynasty to Jin dynasty. Relatively, the method of using pure phase of facies operation had carried on for 1700 years. Tang and Song dynasties opened the great evolution of Feng Shui, through song, Yuan, Ming three dynasties, about 700 years, and began to the complete application theory of Feng Shui til nowadays. Although there is no definite book to record the influence degree of yin and yang in the period of facies operation. After the following development of the feng shui theory, there had a fundamental structure which all related about the yin and yang and the five elements. From 16th century, the interaction of the people who lived in Yangzhai and environmental space had different changes, also every kinds of accommodation had a certain definition. This article consists of the application of Feng shui and the angle of historical change and evolution, and more following the the complexity and changes of the century civilization. Via the image expression symbols of five elements, such as the image of "the son of the geographical person", show the symbol image of the five elements, which find out the "Feng Shui" and "the principle of Feng Shui" to distinguish between the "environmental Feng Shui" and "Folk culture Feng Shui", and the four necessary conditions of the theory. The first one is the theory of the Five Elements can generate each other, whereas they prevail over each other. Secondly, yin and yang, and thirdly, the sky is like "The Philosophy of Yi Jing". Fourthly, the three theory which includes heaven, ground and people. For the theoretical study of the use of five elements in Feng shui, this paper brings out the modern theory which is keeping pace with the times.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>管理學院高階主管管理碩士學程<br>106<br>The progress of modern society is driven by innovation (Schumpeter 1912). Therefore, in the W-theory of five elements, the first cause of analysis is Wood which represents innovation. In the W-theory the flow of elements in a cycle are then Wood (innovation) -> Fire (Resource) -> Earth (strategy) -> Gold (competition) -> Aqua (distribution). The previous element generates the next element in the flow. The cycles constitute an endless dynamic system. The system can be used to model the operation and management of business and find the maximum profits in the enterprise. Finally, this study has used Five-element theory on Alibaba Corporation to model the development history. Alibaba is the largest e-commerce company in the world. Alibaba made its initial public offerings (IPO) at New York Exchange in September 2014 and successfully raised 25 billion USD. The total market value of Alibaba’s stock once reached 300 billion USD. Since Alibaba is a famous internationalized Chinese enterprise, it is a good and convenient example to demonstrate how the five-element theory can help decision makers improve their business practice.
