Klotz, Marcus L. "Eric Whitacre's When David Heard| Understanding Grief through the Lens of Kubler-Ross's Five Stages." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10977634.

Abstract:

This project report analyzes Eric Whitacre’s choral piece When David Heard, a work about grieving the loss of a son, alongside psychologist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross’s five stages of grief. The paper serves to better understand the lamentation of King David in Whitacre’s piece by seeing where each of the five stages fit into the process of grief throughout the piece.

The analysis observes Whitacre’s variety of musical devices such as tonal clusters, intermittent silences, and polyrhythms, as a means to describe the stages of grief that David is experiencing. By understanding these different stages of grief within the piece, one can conduct or sing the performance of this piece with better understanding of this grief.

Abstract:
The issue of death and dying, despite its inevitableness, may be one of the most complex phenomena within the context of ministry. This paper addresses how mourning persons may move beyond grief through an adaptation of Kubler-Ross’ Five Stages of Grief paradigm while examining the construct of death and dying from a biblical and theological perspective. Kubler-Ross’ five stages provide the framework from which a model was designed to help empower grieving members of St. Mary United Methodist Church to overcome the loss of loved ones. The purpose of the model was to develop a mechanism that could be replicated in the church that equips congregants to cope with grief and move on to productive, spiritually whole lives.

Abstract:
Introduction: In order for us to create a society where we live good lives until death, we must dare to talk about the end of life. Relatives are an important part of the palliative care and it is important that they get support for managing the situation and their sorrow The Aim of this study was to investigate professionals’ dialogue with relatives of patients who are in palliative care. My chosen method was qualitative analysis through semistructured interviews with professionals’ in palliative care. To analyze the empirical data, I used the symbolic interactionism. Results show that body language, treatment and team collaboration are important and crucial aspects of the conversations between professionals and relatives. The study has confirmed that the different professions work on the same goal and have a similar approach to palliative care. In the conversation with relatives, it is important to speak truthfully, prepare and let the family's feelings and thoughts take place

Abstract:
The effects of cotton leaf crumple disease on components of yield and on symptom expression were examined for cotton inoculated at five growth stages. As a result of virus infection, the total leaf area was reduced and significant reductions in yield were observed, regardless of plant age at time of inoculation. Yield reductions resulted from a smaller number of bolls set and/or a decrease in boll weight. Foliar symptoms were associated with plants inoculated at all five growth stages, but were observed sooner and were more severe for plants inoculated at the 2-3, 5-8, and 8-10 leaf stages than those inoculated at the 14-16 or 18-20 leaf stages.

Acho, Onyebuchi S. (Onyebuchi Sunday). "Love Attitudes and Marital Adjustment Through Five Stages of the Marital Life-Cycle in Protestant Nigerian Society." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1988. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331089/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between love attitude and marital adjustment across five stages of the marital life-cycle in Nigerian society. The subjects for this study were 202 volunteers from six protestant churches representing six cities in the southern part of Nigeria. An average of 20 couples were representatives of each of the five marital life-cycles. Each of the subjects completed the Love Attitude Inventory (LAI), and the Marital Adjustment Test (short form) (MAT). Wilk's multivariate analysis revealed no significant differences between husbands' and wives' love attitude and marital adjustment across the five stages of the marital life cycle. Multivariate analysis split-plot 5.2 with repeated measures revealed no significant difference for the total sample among the groups, but indicated a significant difference between love attitude and marital adjustment for the total sample using sex as a factor. A univariate test of the MAT and LAI indicated that the MAT accounted for the difference. A canonical correlation indicated a significant positive relationship between husbands1 and wives' marital adjustment and love attitude within each of the five groups. The findings suggest that husbands and wives included in this study have a good understanding of their roles in the marriage relationship and that the partners have general agreement regarding those roles. The marriage partners apparently have strong influences on each other's perceptions of love attitude and marital adjustment.

Full text
Abstract:

Small and medium enterprises play an important role in the development of a country.

The growth of SMEs is also important for the world economy which has been widely

discussed in recent years. Although the growth of small firm is a well known topic in

theoretical research, still there are some research gaps that need to be filled. There is

no single multidimensional theory which would embrace all possible approaches;

most studies on SMEs’ growth examine the growth factors one by one. (Wasilczuk,

2000) Nor is there any single theory that can adequately explain small business

growth due to the heterogeneity of SMEs. Moreover, growth itself is difficult to

measure, and can be measured either objectively or subjectively. (Delmar, 1996)

Therefore, this study incorporates the resource-based view, as well as the

consideration of SMEs’ fives stages model to examine the growth factor of SMEs.

The resource-based view provides a unified approach in the conceptualization of the

resource analysis in the small firm. The five stages model shows the position of SMEs

current growth stage. By analyzing SMEs’ key resources (tangible and intangible

resources), indentifying their growth stages, SMEs can find out the critical resources

which influence their business growth.

As a conclusion, the study finds that each resource has its importance in different

stages. Tangible resources, such as cash and physical resources are critical in the

start-up firms, while intangible resources are prioritized in the success and resource

maturity stages. In order to gain the competitive advantages, SMEs should fully

develop the unique and inimitable resources such as the brand, technology, culture

and reputations.

Owen, Jacqueline Dawn. "Professional Loss and Grief in Teachers Who Taught At Least Five Years Prior to the Implementation of No Child Left Behind." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/28046.

Full text
Abstract:
In this mixed methods study, the researcher, a former classroom teacher, examines the impact of No Child Left Behind on teacher?s emotions. Specifically, the researcher seeks to understand whether or not and to what extent teachers who taught before and during the implementation of No Child Left Behind experienced loss and grief. The researcher administrated an electronic survey. Participants recalled teaching expectations and practices from the time period prior to the implementation of No Child Left Behind and the time period during which No Child Left Behind was implemented. The researcher then sought to determine which practices teachers perceived as professional gains and which practices were perceived as professional losses. Finally, the researcher situated survey data and responses into six stages of grief. Quantitative and qualitative results indicate that most teachers who had taught prior to the implementation of No Child Left Behind experienced loss and grief during its implementation.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of a young woman coming to terms with her grief. It unpacks how an invitation to film an unusual and life-changing event developed into an opportunity to question the ethics of the interview. It examines how the intricacies of a trust relationship influence the very threads and textures of the resulting documentary. This paper is a partnership between a practical documentary project and a more traditional written discussion. The documentary Five Hours with Raja is weighted at eighty per cent of the final thesis and the written exegesis makes up the remaining twenty per cent. Together these two elements investigate the developing relationship between Claudia – the documentary’s key protagonist, and the filmmaker, investigating how their relationship has affected the style, method, content and even the fundamental story line of a documentary. It also discusses the consequential ethical considerations and dilemmas behind creative and practical decisions, investigating ways that a filmmaker can draw the participant into the process to allow a greater degree of ownership, a stronger voice and a more immediate sense of intimacy with the final audience.

Ramaselele, P. N. "Effect of planting dates and cutting stages on the production of five selected winter cereals in Moloto District Gauteng and Nooitgedacht in Mpumulanga Province." Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/1208.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.Sc. (Pasture Science)) --University of Limpopo, 2014
Due to shortage of adequate pasture in large parts of South Africa, winter survival poses a problem to farmers. A shortage in winter grazing is the major problem on most farms in South Africa. Animals loose weight in winter which leads to low reproduction, production of milk, mutton and meat. The winter feed shortages counteract also the possible good performance of animals during summer. Winter supplementation contributes largely to high input costs in livestock production, which can make this enterprise uneconomically. This study was done at two different localities: Hygrotech’s experimental farm at Dewageningsdrift, Gauteng and Nooitgedacht Agricultural Development center, Mpumalunga. Five winter fodder crop cultivars (Witteberg oats, Overberg oats, LS 35 stooling rye, LS 62 stooling rye and Cloc 1 Triticale) were planted on six planting dates (05 April, 04 May, 06 June, 20 July, 20 August and 26 September). Five cutting treatments were applied on Dewageningsdrift:  First cut 8 weeks after planting and after that re-growth every six weeks (Ct 8),  First cut 10 weeks after planting and after that re-growth every six weeks (Ct 10),  First cut 12 weeks after planting and after that re-growth cut every six weeks (Ct 12),  First cut 14 weeks after planting and after that re-growth cut every six weeks (Ct 14),  First cut when more than 50% of plants were in the reproduction stage (RS). The same cultivars that were used at Dewageningsdrift were used on Nooitgedacht ADC. Only one planting date was applied here that was 02 February 2007. The cutting treatments differed also from that on Dewageningsdrift. Material was cut for the first time when it reached a grazing stage (± 50-60 cm high) and after that re-growth was measured four weeks. The main conclusions from the study were that, Witteberg oats has retained its nutritional value longer than other cultivars. LS 35 stooling rye was an early or short duration growing cultivar, if planted in February to April it will provide grazing early/Mid-winter. However it can also be planted in July to grow in spring. LS 62 stooling rye is a medium to long duration growing cultivar which optimum production period will be in late winter and spring. Witteberg oats is a medium/late producer and a long duration growing cultivar, thus if planted early (April) it can provide grazing until late winter. Overberg oats is an early/med long duration growing type, if planted in April it will produce mid-winter, planted in May to July it will produce late winter and planted in August it will provide spring grazing. Cloc 1 triticale is a long duration growing type. It will produce late winter when planted in April to July and in spring when planted in August/September.

Hart, M. J. Alexandra. "Action in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: an Enactive Psycho-phenomenological and Semiotic Analysis of Thirty New Zealand Women's Experiences of Suffering and Recovery." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Social and Political Sciences, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5294.

Full text
Abstract:
This research into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) presents the results of 60 first-person psycho-phenomenological interviews with 30 New Zealand women. The participants were recruited from the Canterbury and Wellington regions, 10 had recovered. Taking a non-dual, non-reductive embodied approach, the phenomenological data was analysed semiotically, using a graph-theoretical cluster analysis to elucidate the large number of resulting categories, and interpreted through the enactive approach to cognitive science. The initial result of the analysis is a comprehensive exploration of the experience of CFS which develops subject-specific categories of experience and explores the relation of the illness to universal categories of experience, including self, ‘energy’, action, and being-able-to-do. Transformations of the self surrounding being-able-to-do and not-being-able-to-do were shown to elucidate the illness process. It is proposed that the concept ‘energy’ in the participants’ discourse is equivalent to the Mahayana Buddhist concept of ‘contact’. This characterises CFS as a breakdown of contact. Narrative content from the recovered interviewees reflects a reestablishment of contact. The hypothesis that CFS is a disorder of action is investigated in detail. A general model for the phenomenology and functional architecture of action is proposed. This model is a recursive loop involving felt meaning, contact, action, and perception and appears to be phenomenologically supported. It is proposed that the CFS illness process is a dynamical decompensation of the subject’s action loop caused by a breakdown in the process of contact. On this basis, a new interpretation of neurological findings in relation to CFS becomes possible. A neurological phenomenon that correlates with the illness and involves a brain region that has a similar structure to the action model’s recursive loop is identified in previous research results and compared with the action model and the results of this research. This correspondence may identify the brain regions involved in the illness process, which may provide an objective diagnostic test for the condition and approaches to treatment. The implications of this model for cognitive science and CFS should be investigated through neurophenomenological research since the model stands to shed considerable light on the nature of consciousness, contact and agency. Phenomenologically based treatments are proposed, along with suggestions for future research on CFS. The research may clarify the diagnostic criteria for CFS and guide management and treatment programmes, particularly multidimensional and interdisciplinary approaches. Category theory is proposed as a foundation for a mathematisation of phenomenology.

Russell, Erica Lee. "Evaluation of a bereavement training programme for volunteers at a Community Centre." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/1808.

Full text
Abstract:
Student Number : 0204770E - MEd research report - School of Education - Faculty of Humanities
The present study investigates a bereavement training programme with a group of volunteer lay counsellors. In South Africa, the number of orphans resulting from an increase in parental deaths from natural causes, such as AIDS and nonnatural causes, for example violence, is increasing rapidly. The increasing number of bereaved children is creating a demand for professional support services that cannot be met by the present number of trained professionals. To address this imbalance, the training of lay counsellors is proposed. It is thus relevant to train those who are willing to help with the necessary knowledge and skills in a bereavement training programme. The present study involves ten volunteers from a Community Centre. Qualitative research methods are employed to analyse the data that is gained from the preand post-training responses to the interviews and Case Examples. Content analysis is used to elucidate the themes that emerge from the collected data. The results of the present study indicate that perceptual and developmental changes have occurred within the volunteers following the training programme, however, it is evident that further training is necessary because of the limited ability that the volunteers demonstrate in practically transferring the knowledge to new cases. In terms of this finding it is clear that factors such as language, age, educational level and personal experiences of death are important criteria to consider in the selection of volunteers for a bereavement training programme. Furthermore, traditional African perspectives of death, cultural differences and HIV/AIDS awareness need to be incorporated into future bereavement training programmes. In terms of the outcomes of the study, a positive outcome is the revision of the Bereavement Programme for children, taking cognisance of cultural sensitiveness, to make it more applicable within the local context. The results of the study also highlight the limitations and implications of the present research, which are discussed and recommendations for future research are made.

Under the influence of economic globalization and the rising of knowledge-based economy era, the competition among different industries has boomed rapidly, thus, the demand of the third party services which help to improve the self-competitiveness has increased and also brought up the importance of Professional Service Industry. Then examining the current situation of Professional Service Industry in Taiwan, it was developed into a M-shape difference between huge and small-sized enterprise because of that most of business was in charge by few head leading companies and end up with the difficulties for small companies to grow up have increased. The primary goal of this case study is to explore the historical background and entrepreneurship of professional service industry in Taiwan, and its influences. And also exploring the difficulties they have met during developing, and the problems in management which might differ from other industries. The reason comes from the unique characteristic of PSI which includes the psychological factors of each member, the policy they follow, and the methodology of how they train employees. Therefore, the investigation focuses on various successful cases through exploring the main reason of why they succeed and their managing strategies. And finally, hoping this research will be helpful for the entrepreneurs who would like to expand the company or office systematically at the start-up stage.

Abstract:
This thesis explores mothers' reactions to, and methods of dealing with, the sudden death of a child, using a constructivist approach. The study focusses on the meanings that mothers construe in relation to the sudden death of their child and the role of these constructions in her "recovery" from this loss. It also explores the grieving process, the effect of the loss on the mother, including a focus on changes in her value system, her role as a mother and as a wife, as well as the impact of this loss on the family system. The study was conducted on the basis of qualitative research methodology, making use of the case study method. The sample consisted of three mothers, selected purposively. The data gathered was analysed inductively.
