Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to open a dialogue between research in social sciences concerning collective emotion and historical investigation concerning a religious and political movement of the Middle Ages. The main idea is to consider the Flagellant movement of 1260 as a collective emotion which, beyond the affects pertaining to it, is also a social practice that finds its efficiency in the spiritual meaning of its collective display, demonstrating the rationality of a seemingly irrational religious phenomenon.

Abstract:
While lay spirituality and even sanctity in Northern Europe found its common expression in beguines or beguards, in Humilitati or Flagellants during the late Middle Ages, in Italy a different phenomenon emerged since the twelfth century, with lay saints being recognized by the urban communities and even by the Church. Mary Harvey Doyno here presents a detailed discussion of the large number of those saints, whose vitae and legends she studies in a number of chapters, trying to establish a historical analysis explaining the development of this phenomenon.

Abstract:
This book examines the art and ritual of flagellant confraternities in Italy from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Meeting regularly to beat themselves with whips, members of these confraternities concentrated on the suffering of Christ in the most extreme and committed way, and the images around them provided visual prompts of the Passion and the model suffering body. This study presents new findings related to a variety of artworks including altarpieces, banners, wall paintings, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings for the condemned, many from outside the Florence-Rome-Venice triangle.
