Abstract:
Methods to determine genetic diversity and relatedness within populations are essential tools for proper wildlife management. Today the approach of choice is polymerase chain reaction-based microsatellite analysis. Seven new polymorphic loci were isolated from a microsatellite-enriched Caribbean flamingo genomic library and used to characterize survey populations of Caribbean and African greater flamingos. In addition, four of these loci were used to verify parentage relationships within a captive-breeding population of African greater flamingos. Parentage predictions based upon gamekeeper observations of breeding and nesting did not always agree with genetic-based parentage analyses of the nine suggested family groups. Four family groups were supported (groups I, II, III and VI) by there results. However, an analysis of the remaining five suggested groups, with a total of eight offspring/dam and eight offspring/sire suggested relationships, yielded seven exclusions of the suggested dam and six exclusions of the suggested sire. This put the overall suggested dam exclusion rate at 35% and exclusion rate for suggested sires at 29%. Although the keeper observation data for our family groups must be considered a variable of concern at this time, these findings are certainly suggestive that more carefully controlled studies may reveal that flamingos are not monogamous as long accepted, but rather socially monogamous or even promiscuous. Thus we have now been able to both characterize and demonstrate the utility of our polymorphic microsatellite loci. We hope these results will interest additional wildlife facilities in further parentage and behavioral studies that will collectively aid to improve monitoring and maintenance of genetic diversity, and as provide better insight into breeding habits of both wild and captive populations.

Abstract:
The consequences of predation have become a central focus of marine ecological research. Numerous studies have emphasized the importance of apex predators in structuring assemblages at various organisational levels and in determining how ecosystems function. However, less appreciated currently is the fact that predators display multiple foraging behaviours, thereby allowing them to overcome problems associated with unpredictability of food resources in space and time. The primary goal of this dissertation is to contribute to growing understanding of the ecological causes and consequences of foraging plasticity displayed by Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber roseus in intertidal sandflat ecosystems in Langebaan Lagoon, South Africa. P. roseus feeds by either (1) creating pits, which involves flamingos stirring up deep sediments with their feet or (2) creating channels, in which their inverted bills are swept from side-to-side on the sediment surface. The first objective of the study was to quantify the ecological drivers of decisions made by flamingos to feed, and to implement either pit- or channel-foraging strategies. The latter was achieved through RandomForest modelling techniques that identified the prominent ecological drivers from a suite of biotic and abiotic variables. Results indicate that biotic variables, i.e. those associated with flamingo prey assemblages, were key in driving choices made by flamingos to forage and to implement either pit- or channel-foraging strategies. The second aim of this dissertation was to quantify the repercussions of the two different foraging behaviours on benthic assemblages. Comparisons of benthic assemblages in flamingo foraging structures (pits and channels) with adjacent non-foraged sediments (controls) indicated differential effects of both flamingo foraging methods on benthic communities, with channel-foraging eliciting a greater negative impact compared to pit-foraging, for which impacts were negligible. Abundance of macrofauna and surface-dwelling taxa such as micro-algae and the amphipod Urothoe grimaldii were all negatively impacted by channel-foraging. Sizes of channels constructed by flamingos were inversely related to their impacts, with impacts on macrofaunal abundance being greater in smaller channels. Overall, this study has shed light on the differential effects of foraging plasticity on prey assemblages and its importance in enhancing spatio-temporal heterogeneity in intertidal sandflats. The study also emphasizes the need to incorporate foraging plasticity into current thinking and conceptual models of predation in marine soft sediments, in order to appreciate the full spectrum of predation effects on assemblages.

Abstract:
Flamingo species generate tremendous interest whether they are small captive groups or wild populations numbering in the thousands. Genetic pedigrees are invaluable for maintaining maximum genetic diversity in captive, as well as wild, populations. However, presently there is a general lack of genetic data for flamingo populations. Microsatellites are loci composed of 2-6 base pair tandem repeats, scattered throughout higher eukaryotic genomes, often exhibiting high levels of polymorphism and heterozygosity. These loci are thus important genetic markers for identity, parentage and population studies. Here, six microsatellite loci were isolated from a microsatellite-enriched Caribbean flamingo partial genomic library. Two are compound complex repeats and four are perfect trinucleotide repeats. Each locus was amplified from Caribbean, African greater, Chilean and lesser flamingo genomic DNAs. Heterozygosity frequencies were calculated for Caribbean (range 0.12-0.90) and African greater flamingos (range 0.23-0.94) loci. All six microsatellite loci were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and linkage disequilibrium analyses did not suggest linkage for any pair of two greater flamingo subspecies (African and Caribbean) loci. At least five of the loci also exhibit polymorphism in Chilean and lesser flamingos, but due to small sample numbers, relevant allele/heterozygosity frequency calculations could not be estimated. Nucleotide sequence comparisons of the amplicons derived from the four flamingo groups reveal a high level of sequence conservation at all loci. Although small sample numbers again limit the data for lesser flamingos and to some degree for the Chilean birds, the sequences of the two greater flamingo subspecies were identical and the number of nonconserved nucleotides appears to be higher for lesser/greater comparisons than for Chilean/greater comparisons. This is consistent with Chilean flamingos being a different species within the same genus as the greater flamingos, while lesser flamingos belong to a separate genus. Parentage analyses on suggested African greater flamingo family groups from Disney's Animal Kingdom's collection were performed using microsatellite data. Results confirmed many suggested family groups but in other cases one or more of the suggested parents were clearly excluded. The six microsatellite loci isolated provide a new population management tool useful for both wild and captive flamingo populations.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.<br>Biological disturbances on marine soft sediment ecosystems have been well researched. However, little attention has been paid to the potential ecological role that iconic shore bird predators may have on marine ecosystems. This paper tests the effects of spatial gradients on Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) predation impacts on the benthic macrofaunal community structure in an intertidal sandflat ecosystem in South Africa. P. ruber is a benthic filter-feeder known to feed on benthic dwelling invertebrates through pit formation, where deep sediments are stirred up by trampling their feet. Macrofaunal community structure between flamingo pit foraging structures and adjacent non-foraged sediments (controls) yielded insignificant spatial differences. However, subtle positive and negative effects of flamingo predation on macrofaunal abundance were noted at specific sites. Flamingos in this study were not targeting a specific prey group. Thus of the 19 macrofaunal prey items identified, none were significantly impacted across treatments, except for an unidentified polychaete. However, this was once again site specific. The results suggested this polychaete is generally abundant within the area sampled. Furthermore, its distribution is perhaps affected by the level of intensity employed in pit-foraging, rather than being preyed upon. Greater polychaete abundance in pits relative to controls may be attributed to vigorous flamingo feeding efforts. Pit foraging appears to be an expensive strategy to employ, but the energy investment may be reduced through the use of sophisticated sensory organs to detect accessible prey deep within the sediment. Overall, the study has shown that the impact of flamingo predation on a spatial gradient is small and site specific. However, the study highlights the need for further research on quantifying the ecological role flamingos play as predators on marine ecosystems.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.<br>The impact of flamingo predation on the benthic community has been well researched through the use of caging and exclusion experiments. However, there is still very little known about flamingo spatial foraging preferences and the environmental cues that determine them. The purpose of this study was to investigate the foraging distributions of non-breeding Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) within one of their southern African overwintering grounds, the Heuningnes Estuary. This was achieved by comparing spatial level differences in the abundance and size of flamingo foraging pits across sites and shore positions, and by examining the effects of soil moisture content and sediment profile as environmental cues driving flamingo foraging behaviour. Pit abundance was obtained as a total count per quadrat, and pit size was measured from photographs taken in the field. Sediment cores provided soil moisture content measurements, while sediment profile was measured as the angle of elevation from each shore position to the high water mark. It was found that flamingos fed homogeneously across all four sites, but restricted their foraging to the high shore and upper mid shore regions of the intertidal. Soil moisture content was not a significant driver of flamingo foraging behaviour, but sediment profile was significant. It was proposed that flamingo foraging preference for the high shore and upper mid shore regions was because: (1) the sediment profiles were flatter, (2) the macrofaunal prey densities were greater and (3) these shore positions coincided with the required depth for stamp-feeding, which was linked to the high tide and the time of day at which foraging occurred. This study provides novel information regarding the environmental drivers of Greater Flamingo foraging behaviour and the spatial use of the intertidal sandflats of the Heuningnes Estuary. Furthermore, this knowledge could be useful for the management of flamingo foraging grounds of the De Mond Nature Reserve.

Rose, Paul Edward. "Investigating the behaviour and welfare of captive flamingos (Phoenicopterformes)." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/33595.

Abstract:
When a species is housed in captivity there are facets of the managed environment that can impact on individual and population welfare. A key component of an individual’s environment is its social environment, which can have important implications for animal health and welfare. Highly social species may experience impoverished welfare if kept in captive groups that differ in size, structure and demographic to that experienced by free-living animals. Amongst the most common of social animals to be housed in captivity are the flamingos (Phoenicopteridae). The unique evolutionary biology of these birds means that key aspects of their behaviour depends upon group living. A positive relationship between breeding success and increasing flock size has previously been noted, but how flamingo flocks are structured socially remains mysterious. All six species of flamingo are currently found in captive collections. The three more generalist species, greater (Phoenicopterus roseus), Caribbean (P. ruber) and Chilean (P. chilensis) flamingos are found commonly in zoos and can, under the right conditions, breed well. The other flamingo species are much more specialised in their habitat and dietary requirements and have proved more challenging with regards to their captive management. These three species are the Andean (Phoenicoparrus andinus), James’ (P. jamesi) and lesser (Phoeniconaias minor) flamingos. All six species are included in the experimental work presented in this thesis. This research aimed to evaluate specific elements of flamingo group living using social network analysis (SNA). It also aimed to assess influences of the captive environment (i.e. enclosure style and visitor number) and climate on enclosure usage, time-activity budgets and behavioural diversity to provide, as far as possible, a complete insight into how to measure, assess and evaluate captive flamingo welfare. A synthesis of the relevance of SNA to zoo animal management, and a review of current literature to identify research needs that could evidence good flamingo husbandry form the basis of the first two chapters. These two overview chapters support the questions asked in the following data-based sections of the thesis. Flamingos were observed at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre from March 2012 to July 2016 with data on patterns of social associations being collected four times daily (depending upon weather and bird husbandry). Associations were defined as birds within one neck length of each other and, using photos, the affiliations of each bird in the group were recorded. For assessment of bond strength, network position and identification of preferred/avoided partners a Half-Weight Index was applied to these data. Permutation testing was applied to association matrices to determine the difference between the number of observed preferential bonds (and avoided bonds) and Mantel tests were used to compare matrix correlations to assess differences between seasons, species, years and enclosures (where appropriate). The SNA programmes Socprog, UCInet and Netdraw were used to analyse network data. These network data form the basis of three chapters and show that flamingos associate preferentially with non-random bonds occurring in all flocks observed. Influences of social bonds on courtship display were also examined, and temporal changes in association were considered across time, season and year. Finally, to see any influence of animal health on bond preferences, scores of foot condition (used to identify and evaluate the presence and severity of pododermatitis on an individual bird) were analysed alongside of network measures for three flocks of flamingos. To measure enclosure usage, each species’ exhibit was measured and zones accessible to the birds were defined. As exhibit use can be based on resource use (and these resources can form differently-sized areas within an exhibit) a modified Spread of Participation Index (SPI) was used to provide an outcome between 1 (one area or resource used more than others) and 0 (equal use of all resource zones). Time-activity budgets were calculated for all flocks over daytime, and for one flock (measured using remote camera traps) over night. These data are presented in two chapters and demonstrate that captive flamingos can change their activity patterns in a similar manner to that noted in wild birds. Interestingly, flamingos are very active during the night and this provides useful data for zoo personnel to consider when re-assessing husbandry and management plans for these most ubiquitous of zoo birds.

Abstract:
Numerous studies have attempted to quantify the effect of epifaunal predation and its co-occurring disturbance on macrofaunal communities with the aid of exclosure experiments. However, no attention has been paid to the possible impacts of different foraging methods used by flamingos on benthic communities. Multivariate and univariate analyses were carried out in order to determine the effects of two different flamingo feeding strategies (pit and channel foraging) on sediment penetrability and macrofaunal community structure in Langebaan Lagoon. The two foraging strategies appear only to differ with regards to prey removal and recolonisation. The more energy intensive, pitforming foraging enables the flamingo to obtain higher quantities of Urothoe grimaldii in addition to bivalves, while promoting recolonisation by opportunists. On the other hand, channel-foraging enables the attainment of various polychaete and nematode species. These small-scale differences, as well as the spatial (and possibly temporal) variation in structures generate habitat complexity. Thus, this preliminary study supports the notion that flamingo foraging activity is a key driver of spatial heterogeneity in Langebaan Lagoon and highlights the need for further research.

du, Plessis Darren Scott. "Temporal interactions with flamingo foraging plasticity: ecological effects on basal resources and benthic heterogeneity." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29623.

Abstract:
The role of predation as a structuring agent of communities has been a focal area of research in marine ecology. Conversely, studies focusing on foraging plasticity, particularly by shorebirds, and consequences for benthic community structure, heterogeneity and ecosystem functioning have been limited in marine soft-sediments. Temporal interactions with foraging plasticity is an even greater knowledge gap. The primary goal of this dissertation was to expand on current understanding of foraging plasticity and the broader ecological role of Greater Flamingos as predators in marine sedimentary ecosystems. The specific aim was to test the long-term effects of different foraging structure sizes (which is a subtle form of foraging plasticity) on sedimentary assemblages following foraging disturbances. In situ comparisons of large and small foraging structures created by the flamingos with adjacent non-foraged sediments (controls) indicated that small channels had greater concentrations of sediment organic matter relative to large channels following feeding. Additionally, small feeding structures supported greater abundances of the burrowing amphipod Urothoe grimaldii and the grazing gastropod Assiminea globulus along with elevated size-specific sediment deposition rates. These results shed light on the differential timedependent impacts flamingo foraging plasticity can generate on basal trophic resources and higher consumers. Results also showed that irrespective of size, feeding channels made by flamingos generally became enriched with microalgae following foraging, with this enrichment effects spilling over into non-foraged controls sediments. This indicates that foraging by flamingos has the potential to create resource islands that become enriched with microalgae over time, with effects spilling over into adjacent non-foraged areas. Importantly, these positive effects may oppose the negative effects of bioturbation by burrowing sandprawns on productivity, which is a dominant process in the study area. This study emphasizes the importance of Greater Flamingos in regulating basal resource supply, community structure and spatio-temporal heterogeneity and has highlighted the need for predation models within sedimentary environments to incorporate time-dependent effects of foraging plasticity into current thinking.

Abstract:
Master of Landscape Architecture<br>Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning<br>Jessica Canfield<br>Nature based tourism is a growing trend across the world today. Ecotourism is a specific nature based tourism type, defined by the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) as “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” The ‘ecolodge,’ is a term that refers to the site and structure where ecotourists stay and where ecotourism activities occur. The intention of an ecolodge is to find a balance between three factors: conservation, local communities, and interpretation for travelers and workers. Every ecolodge is unique in form and function to uphold sustainability best practices and to meet specific environmental and climatic needs of a region. As more and more tourists choose to travel to environmentally sensitive areas of the world, ecolodge use must increase in order to preserve environmental and cultural assets (Honey, 2008). In other countries, like Costa Rica and Kenya, many ecolodges have successfully balanced these three components creating an overall trend towards ecolodges and ecotourism operations, shifting away from traditional accommodation types. However, as the U.S. tourism market continues to grow, there is yet to be a notable ecolodge presence. Some ecotourism experts would argue that true ecotourism--equally finding balance between conservation, guest interpretation, and community support--will never be possible to create in the U.S. Many believe it is the ‘supporting local communities’ aspect of ecotourism which cannot be met. The treatment of indigenous people, as well as the structure of the nation’s economy in the U.S. is different compared to developing countries where ecolodge design has found success. Interestingly, certified sustainable site development is becoming prevalent in the U.S. Frameworks such as LEED and SITES are used to improve the rigor of sustainability design. Design guidelines for ecolodges share similar goals with LEED and SITES. But ecolodge design is not prevalent in the U.S. This may be due to the lack of an international ecolodge certification system. If the ecotourism industry can progress from ecolodge guidelines (which are largely unknown) to an international ecolodge certification, truly authentic ecolodges will become the standard (Mehta, 2007). To explore how ecolodges can be used in a U.S. National Park, this project focuses on the Flamingo District in the Everglades National Park, Florida. A projective design methodology is used. The data collection methods include precedent studies, interviews, on-site observation, and site analysis. Flamingo, located in the southernmost point of the Everglades was destroyed by hurricane Katrina in 2005. The National Park Service is seeking a business concessioner to 1) oversee the construction of new lodging area, and 2) operate all business activities—recreation rentals, marina operations, general store, and dining—in the district. The goal of this research project is to create an ecolodge design that can serve Flamingo’s needs and serve as a model for future ecolodge design in U.S. National Parks.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the feeding ecology of the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor). Studies took place at six endorheic alkaline-saline lakes within the East African Rift Valley, which varied in terms of taxonomic composition and biomass, both spatially and temporally. The lakes could be categorised as Arthrospira fusiformis dominated (lakes Bogoria and Sonachi), diatom dominated (Lakes Natron and Elementaita) or ‘other’ cyanobacteria dominated (lakes Oloidien and Nakuru). From 2009 to 2013, the lake levels were consistently rising with the average biomass reducing concurrently; maximum surface A. fusiformis recorded was > 800 mg L-1 in 2009 at Lake Bogoria, falling to < 50 mg L-1 in 2013. A reduction in average biomass was recorded at all lakes throughout the study period, with the exception of Lake Natron, where higher diatom abundance was recorded in 2011 than in 2009. This study identified 10 distinct feeding behaviours utilised by lesser flamingos at different times of day. Different behaviours were also employed to access different food resources from a variety of niches throughout the aquatic habitat: from the lake’s edge, the open water and the lake-sediment interface. Deep water feeding was occurring in higher frequency than recorded previously, at Lake Bogoria where flamingos were exploiting a highly concentrated food resource of sedimented A. fusiformis, discovered during this study. This confirms that deep water feeding behaviours are more common than only being utilised to access diatoms as an emergency food source, as has been suggested. The time spent feeding was negatively correlated with food abundance across the six lakes with lower biomass requiring longer feeding duration, however, at Lake Bogoria a positive correlation was identified, suggesting re-stocking of energy reserves. A positive correlation was identified between the distribution of food resources within Lake Bogoria and lesser flamingo distribution across the lake. Finally, a significant difference was found between flock density when feeding on different food sources (more densely flocked when feeding on A. fusiformis than on diatoms) or through different feeding behaviours.

Abstract:
Wnt signaling is involved in self-renewal and maintenance ofhematopoietic stem cells (HSCs); however, the particular role of non-canonical Wnt signaling in regulating HSCs in vivo is largely unknown. Here I show Flamingo and Frizzled8, members of non-canonical Wnt signaling, both express in and functionally maintain quiescent long-term HSCs. Flamingo regulates Frizzled8 distribution at the interface between HSCs and N-cadherin + osteoblasts (N-cad+OBs that enrich osteoprogenitors) in the niche. I further show that N-cad+OBs predominantly express non-canonical Wnt ligands and inhibitors of canonical Wnt signaling under homeostasis. This non-canonical Wnt signaling is attenuated prior to activation of HSCs. In the activated HSCs, however, canonical Wnt signaling is enhanced. Mechanistically, non-canonical Wnt signaling mediated by Frizzled8 suppresses the Ca2+-NF AT- IFNy pathway and antagonizes canonical Wnt signaling in HSCs. My findings demonstrate that non-canonical Wnt signaling maintains quiescent long- term HSCs through Flamingo and Frizzled8 interaction in the niche.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A apresentação histórica de Moçambique baseia-se nas diretrizes estabelecidas pelo historiador africano Joseph Ki-Zerbo.<br>This work examines the novel O último voo do flamingo, written by the Mozambican author Mia Couto, published for the first time in 2000, in Portugal. Initially presenting as a police plot, the novel is narrated by a character who witnessed the facts: the Tizangara‘s translator, responsible for translating the dialogue between Eurocentric culture and Mozambican‘s mythical beliefs. The cultural mediation, the story‘s narrative and the moments in which the narrator/translator tells his life presuppose a shift of points of view which are studied under considerations of the researchers Oscar Tacca and Gérard Genette. Ambivalence, which is both cause as well as consequence of this narrative construction, reflects the contrariety lived by the small Mozambican village of Tizangara, scenario of the novel. From the conception of myth established by Mircea Eliade, it is seen that the sacred worldview characteristic of part of Mozambican‘s historical traditions, is represented in O último voo do flamingo by ancestors, wizards and eldest men, the bearers of wisdom in African beliefs. Given that, corruption, as a sign of power of Tizangara‘s local governors, threatens continuity of life, leading the narrative to the apocalyptical scenario suggested by Mia Couto as a way of restart. To understand this contrast, it is considered not only the historical background of Mozambique as well as Tizangara, a metonym of the African country. Reflecting the complex historical moment in which that country is going through, the year of 1992 is chosen to tell the story – first year of peace after decades of war (emancipation and civil). Even though freed from Portuguese colonization since 1975, Mozambique remains colonized, in a different way now. We identify as well some of the conditions that contributed to neocolonialism with bibliographic support of Stuart Hall and Kwame Anthony Appiah. The historical presentation of Mozambique is based on guidelines established by the African historian Joseph Ki-Zerbo.

Abstract:
Not many filmmakers have explored using animals to portray, for example, a political conflict allegorically. George Franju and Fe&Igrave;lix Rodri&Igrave;guez de la Fuente resorted to animals in their films to criticize the political environment of their time, the Nazi administration of Paris for the former, and the Franco dictatorship for the later. They showed morbid and gruesome scenes of animals being slaughtered to illustrate symbolically the violent atmosphere that impregnated the life of the French and the Spanish citizens in those difficult years. Inspired by their work, I have produced 'Salma: A Wingless Nomad', a film that presents the political conflict of Western Sahara through the fictional story of a young Sahrawi refugee whose only way of connecting with reality and the memories of her childhood is through the images of flamingos. For her, flamingos incarnate the freedom her people lost when, consecutively, Spain and Morocco invaded them. They also represent the nomadic tradition of her ancestors, a way of life that she romanticizes as the true identity of the Sahrawis. In this essay, I compare my film with the work of Franju and Rodri&Igrave;guez de la Fuente, providing an analysis on how I built the allegory around the natural history of flamingos. I conclude by saying that even though Franju's and Rodri&Igrave;guez de la Fuente's morbid use of 'mise en scene' was effective to depict the violence of the Nazi and the Falangist regimes, my film took a different approach; one that would romantically reveal the reason why the Sahrawis suffered, which wasn't violence or death, but the lack of freedom.

Abstract:
Winter wheat stubble and dried plant residue in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields were burned in the fall and spring to evaluate effects on jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host.) seed survival and germination. Laboratory studies were also conducted to determine minimum temperatures and heat duration needed to reduce jointed goatgrass seed viability. Maximum air temperatures attained during various field burns reached from 74 C to over 700 C. Temperatures 2.5 em above the soil surface remained above 400 C for over 10 seconds and above 600 C for 2 to 8 seconds in burning CRP stubble. Results for the winter wheat stubble location were similar with temperatures sustained above 400 C for over 30 seconds. Seed exposure in the lab to 400 and 600 C flames for 1 second reduced germination to 20 and 15 percent, respectively. Germination was reduced to zero with exposures of 10 seconds or more. Oven temperatures of 150 C reduced germination to 85, 57.5, 17.5, 0 and 0 percent for exposures of 20, 30, 60, 120 and 300 seconds, respectively. At 275 C oven temperature germinability dropped to 50% after a 10 second exposure and 0% after a 20 second exposure. Jointed goatgrass plant populations were reduced 54 to 92% after field burning in the spring or fall. Fall burning provided 70 to 85% control of goatgrass the following spring. In non-burned non-disked plots over 90% of emerging plants germinated from seeds on the soil surface. In burned non-disked plots few seeds germinated from on the surface, with 80 to 90 percent of surviving plants having germinated from buried seed. Herbicides provided limited control of jointed goatgrass. None of the herbicides provided greater than 50% control.

Theropod nesting localities suggest some dinosaurs incubated eggs in a manner similar to modern birds; however, taphonomic studies of modern nesting localities are limited. Here, I document Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) and Caribbean Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) nesting sites at Poplar Island, Chesapeake Bay, MD, and Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington D.C., respectively. Sterna hirundo construct scrape nests with loose vegetation and produce 2-3 eggs; P. ruber build mud mounds containing one egg. Both species exhibit biparental care. Nests were surveyed on multiple occasions. Documentation included nest composition, density, and distribution, as well as eggshell concentration and orientation. Of 80 tern nests with 193 eggs, 12 nests hatched, 7 were predated, 31failed, and 30 were of unknown fates. Thirty-two flamingo nests averaged 32 x 31 cm, with mean nearest neighbor distance of 63.8 cm. Both species displayed abundant eggshell at nest centers. Concave-up eggshell characterized hatched and predated nests, whereas trampled areas favored concave-down. Wind or colony members likely transported random eggshell present on the colony. Eggs buried in nest and soil indicated adult abandonment. The results of this study may help determine nest fate for modern birds and provide paleontologists with physical characteristics to consider when excavating fossil sites. Abstract:
O cenário moçambicano descrito, portanto, em seus romances e contos, aproxima o leitor da realidade histórica e também social do país, reunindo a dinâmica material da vida em Moçambique - com suas especificidades culturais e as tradições locais bem como uma reflexão acerca do próprio papel social da literatura.<br>Throughout the readings of the novels of the Mozambican author Mia Couto is possible to observe that, systematically, the writer proposes the reader to approach and dialogue between the subjective world of the characters within the text and history of Mozambique, starring actors such fictional clippings in chronological in which past and present are constantly in dialogue. Thus, manifest in his prose an intrinsic relationship between literary productions and, therefore, the specificities of the field of fiction and the author\'s commitment to the historical reality of his country. Through these characters in his stories and novels, history of Mozambique is presented and the author builds a critical perspective of the country outlining a concrete social reality and manifests strongly in the space where the characters live and circulate. Goble, Keryn Sheree. "Height of Flames Projecting from Compartment Openings." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1580.

Full text
Abstract:
External flaming from buildings occurs as a result of a large amount of fuel being available in the room of fire origin in comparison to the amount of ventilation provided. The size of the openings in a compartment affects the amount of oxygen available within the fire room, and hence the amount of combustion that can take place inside. Excess fuel that is not burnt within the room flows out of the opening and combusts upon reaching the oxygen in the air outside. It is in this situation that flames are seen projecting out of the window. Flames projecting from openings pose the threat of fire spread from the room of fire origin. This threat increases with the size of the flames. Thus a dependable method for predicting the size of flames projecting from openings is required. This research addresses the issue of predicting flame heights projecting from openings, based on the heat release rate of a fire. The results are based on laboratory experiments and are presented in non-dimensional form, allowing application to scenarios that have not been specifically tested. This work supports the findings of other researchers, with appropriate adjustments made to compensate for differing experimental approaches. This indicates that the relationships established between the non-dimensional heat release rate and flame height are formed from a sound underlying principle. An empirical relationship between the non-dimensional flame height and heat release rate of a fire is presented in a simplified format to enable ease of use. The temperatures attained, and other observations from the compartment fire experiments are also presented and discussed. These were found to have dependence on a number of factors, with relationships varying between the individual experiments. The widely-used computational fluid dynamics model Fire Dynamics Simulator, Version 4 (FDS), was found to currently be unreliable in modelling the experimental scenarios. The results obtained were unrealistic and bore minimal resemblance to the experimental results, with extensive computational simulation time. The ability of the programme to model the compartment fire scenario requires further investigation to determine whether a finer grid resolution may improve results, or whether it is simply not able to model combustion processes involved at this stage.

Abstract:
Being active in an online environment has become part of our day to day life. The protection of anonymity, invisibility and lack of authority on online platforms ranging from social media to gaming, allows people to act uninhibitedly in a setting often populated by foul language. Acting in an offensive manner while being online has been the subject of various studies, which range from behaviour in e-classrooms, to flaming used as means of entertainment, to cyber-bullying. This thesis examines the occurrences of offensive language usage in online gaming, specifically in World of Warcraft, and attempts to identify the triggers that lead to hostile communication within the game and to map the manner players act in flaming settings. A chat log analysis was used to comprise a list of most frequently utilized offensive words. A questionnaire was applied in order to collect data regarding players evaluation of these words, their mind set when in flaming situations and their reactions to and motivations of offensive behaviour. The research results show that, in flaming settings, players choose to either take a reactive stance and remove themselves from potentially offensive situations, or to act proactively and flame back or get the “flamers” punished. Furthermore, the results show that there are certain words, emotes and situations that are generally directly linked to volatile occurrences. In conclusion, gaming is no stranger to the shortcomings being online entails and a more balanced threshold for offensive behaviour acceptance must be re-established.

Abstract:
Ecological restoration of rangelands using wild-collected seeds can be challenging due to low seed quality, inconvenient seed anatomy, and poor plant establishment. In North America, the half-shrub winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata) is a valuable protein-rich forage for wildlife and livestock. Seeds of this species are contained in one-seeded fruits enclosed in four fluffy, silky bracts. While the seeds can be removed from the bracts, it is not recommended as the bracts are thought to help protect the seed and aid in germination and seedling growth. However, bracts of winterfat make it difficult to incorporate this species within a seed mix because it prevents the seed from flowing through mechanized seeders. The anatomy of winterfat fruit also makes it difficult to treat this species with external seed coating materials that may aid in direct seeding efforts. We tested the use of a recently developed flash flaming technique in combination with seed coating to improve the flowability of winterfat fruits. Our results indicate that flash flaming can reduce the appendages on winterfat fruits, which decreased fruit volume by up to 46% without impacting seed germination. Flash flaming also makes it possible to incorporate a polymer seed coating to the exterior of winterfat fruits. We found that flash flaming combined with seed coating improved the flowability of winterfat fruits, as measured with standard laboratory tests, and by delivering fruits through a broadcast seeder and a rangeland drill. These results indicate that flash flaming plus seed coating provides a new technology that will allow for the treating and planting of winterfat on degraded rangelands.

Glassom, D. "Predation/disturbance effects of greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) on the benthic communities of two Southern African lagoons." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/9673.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 69-74.<br>Greater Flamingos, Phoenicopterus ruber, were excluded from intertidal areas of two lagoons and subtidal areas of one of these on the Namibian coastline. Macrofaunal and meiofaunal numbers increased at all exclusion sites, but taxon-specific responses were variable. Both intertidal sites were polychaete dominated; subtidally amphipods formed dense tube mats that covered the substrate. All except one macrofaunal species showed significant response to caging. Relative to controls, macrofaunal numbers increased approximately three times inside subtidal exclosures, and one and a half times intertidally, but diversity indices were similar between treatments. There was some evidence that amensalistic interactions developed between macrofauna within exclosures. Intertidally at Walvis Bay rneiofauna showed little response to flamingo exclusion, but subtidally all groups showed statistically significant responses to treatments. At Sandwich Harbour, foraminifera and ostracod abundance changed significantly. Bacterial counts were lower in exclusions at all sites, but significantly so only at Sandwich Harbour, which was the only site where chlorophyll concentrations did not change significantly. Sediment particle size composition was unaffected at all sites. Eh and organic content of sediments changed least subtidally; pH was affected by the treatment at both Walvis Bay sites, but not at Sandwich Harbour. Partial cages, used as cage controls, indicated that results were not artefacts caused by caging. Overall, it was clear that P. ruber was important in structuring communities in the areas studied. In the absence of P. ruber, physical disturbance may be the most important force structuring benthic communities.

Yule, Daniel L. "Investigations of Forage Fish and Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Interactions in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming-Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 1992. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7632.

Abstract:
I investigated the interaction of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and their dominant forage fish populations, Utah chub (Gila atraria) and kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming-Utah. Through bioenergetics modeling, I quantified the consumption dynamics of the lake trout population. From hydroacoustics analyses, I quantified the density and biomass of the two dominant forage fish populations. In Chapter II, I report the results of the energetics analysis. The objective of this chapter was to understand the role of lake trout predation in recent changes in fish assemblage structure of the reservoir. Through lake trout diet analysis and exploration of forage fish growth rates, I quantified the duration of time that chubs and kokanee are vulnerable to lake trout predation. Faster growth rates of kokanee greatly reduce the duration of time that this species is vulnerable to predation relative to Utah chubs. Although chubs are more fecund than kokanee, this advantage in reproductive potential may not make up for differences in duration of vulnerability. I predict that kokanee will make up an even larger proportion of the total fish assemblage of the reservoir in future years. In Chapter III, I compare annual estimates of lake trout consumption demand to biomass estimates of forage fish. I used vertical gill net sampling, beach seine surveys, and hydroaocustics to assess the distributions and biomasses of the Utah chub and kokanee populations. Biomasses of pelagic Utah chubs and kokanee were calculated to be 83 300 and 209 000 kg, respectively. Energetics analyses indicated that between 1985 and 1989 the lake trout population consumed 79 000 kg of chub and 196 000 kg of kokanee per year. These results suggest ' that forage fish populations should decline in future years. Annual consumption demand of lake trout between 400 and 600 mm (137 000 kg) exceeded biomass estimates of forage fish of useable size (22 000 kg), suggesting that this size-class of predator is currently food-limited. High occurrence of invertebrate prey taxa in the diet of small predators supports this food-limitation hypothesis. The lack of small pelagic forage fishes may reduce the ability of lake trout to recruit to sizes that are accessible to anglers and of value to the fishery.

Abecassis, Empis Cecilia. "Analysis of the compartment fire parameters influencing the heat flux incident on the structural façade." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4188.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years several high-profile building fires have highlighted shortcomings in the way we design for the complex interaction of structures and fire. These weaknesses appear to arise from a combination of gaps in knowledge of some of the more intricate aspects of compartment fire dynamics and from limitations in the engineering applications developed to date from hitherto established fundamentals. In particular the One Meridian Plaza Fire (1991), the Madrid Windsor Tower Fire (2005) and the Lakanal House Fire (2009) have emphasised the need for further study in the field of post-flashover compartment fires and the often consequent external fires that emerge from the compartment openings. External fire plumes impinge upon the structural façade, causing added structural stress, and often result in external fire spread and secondary ignition in upper level compartments. Hence a better understanding of the effect had by the internal compartment fire on the development of external flaming and the insult of the plume to its surroundings is beneficial for Structural Engineers, Fire Protection Engineers and Emergency Response Personnel alike. This research explores existing correlations, identifies their limitations and proposes a simplified methodology that links key parameters found to govern the internal post-flashover compartment fire to the heat flux potentially imposed on the exterior façade. Existing correlations addressing the effect of compartment fires on the insult to the external structure have largely been compiled by Law and are summarised in the form of a design manual for bare external structural steel [1]. Formulated in the 1970s, these correlations are based on the combined findings of several different experimental tests devised to investigate component phenomena of compartment fires and external flaming, forming an analytical model which is mostly empirical in nature. The methodology is convoluted and has several inherent assumptions which give rise to various limits of applicability however it is currently still used in structural-fire design, but best known as Annex B of both Eurocodes 1 and 3 [2,3]. As part of the present research, full-scale fire tests are conducted in situ, in a highly instrumented high-rise building, to provide high-resolution measurements of several internal compartment fire characteristics during a post-flashover fire in a modern, realistically-furnished compartment. External high resolution instrumentation in the main test also provides detailed measurements of the external flaming and distribution of heat flux incident on the façade. The tests provide realistic benchmark scenario data for comparing physical measurements against the analytical Law Model, the difference in which allows for an evaluation of the assumptions used in the model, which are often defined as ‘conservative’ in nature from the perspective of structural design. A detailed sensitivity study of the main input parameters in the Law Model allows for the identification of parameters of pivotal influence on the resultant heat flux incident on the plane of the external façade. Analysis of the Law Model and its underlying experimental basis also enables the identification of several limits of applicability of the model. Combined, these assessments show the analytical model can be stripped of unnecessary complexity and a Simplified Model is proposed with clear bounds of applicability. The proposed model describes the distribution of heat flux to the façade above a compartment opening and features only parameters of key importance, where low-dependency parameters are grouped into associated error bars. This results in a model that can be applied in the design of several building components that fall in the plane of the façade, such as structural elements, façade cladding and window arrangements. Its ease of implementation renders the model more widely accessible to different factions of the Fire Engineering Community. Furthermore, analysis of the Law Model identifies further parameters of potential importance that have, as of yet, not been addressed. A preliminary investigation conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools shows that variation in some parameters – that are not individually accounted for in the Law Model – may influence the compartment fire conditions, the consequent external flaming and the resultant external heat exposure. Therefore, it is recommended that further comprehensive experimental research be conducted into the potential influence of the identified parameters.
