Abstract:
Threatening stimuli seem to capture attention more swiftly than neutral stimuli. This attention bias has been observed under different experimental conditions and with different types of stimuli. It remains unclear whether this adaptive behaviour reflects the function of automatic or controlled attention mechanisms. Additionally, the spatiotemporal dynamics of its neural correlates are largely unknown. The present study investigates these issues using an Emotional Flanker Task synchronized with EEG recordings. A group of 32 healthy participants saw response-relevant images (emotional scenes from IAPS or line drawings of objects) flanked by response-irrelevant distracters (i.e., emotional scenes flanked by line drawings or vice versa). We assessed behavioural and ERP responses drawn from four task conditions (Threat-Central, Neutral-Central, Threat-Peripheral, and Neutral-Peripheral) and subjected these responses to repeated-measures ANOVA models. When presented as response-relevant targets, threatening images attracted faster and more accurate responses. They did not affect response accuracy to targets when presented as response-irrelevant flankers. However, response times were significantly slower when threatening images flanked objects than when neutral images were shown as flankers. This result replicated the well-known Emotional Flanker Effect. Behavioural responses to response-relevant threatening targets were accompanied by significant modulations of ERP activity across all time-windows and regions of interest and displayed some meaningful correlations. The Emotional Flanker Effect was accompanied by a modulation over parietal and central-parietal regions within a time-window between 550-690ms. Such a modulation suggests that the attentional disruption to targets caused by response-irrelevant threatening flankers appears to reflect less neural resources available, which are seemingly drawn away by distracting threatening flankers. The observed spatiotemporal dynamics seem to concur with understanding of the important adaptive role attributed to threat-related attention bias.

Abstract:
System integrity of a flanged connection requires that no leakages occur. Metallic flanges and their joining is of great importance when it comes to avoiding leakages from hydrocarbon lines. The American standard ASTM A182 demands that flanges must be forged to shape, thereby excluding other manufacturing methods. Mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel bars have been examined by doing tensile and charpy tests. A finite element model of a typical ASME-flange assembly was made and was used to calculate stress levels in the flange. The measured mechanical properties of the bar, showed that it is suitable for flange use.

Thin shell theory is applied to pipe bends terminated by flanges or flange-ended tangent pipes and subjected to any end loading, either in-plane or out-of-plane. Graphs of flexibility factor versus pipe bend characteristic are presented for in-plane bending of a wide range of pipe elbows terminated by flanges or short flange-ended tangents. Experimental results verify the thin shell solutions for in-plane and out-of-plane bending of a flanged pipe elbow. The capabilities of a computer program BENDPAC are also described.

Abstract:
Rubber forming is a common process for the fabrication of flanged metallic parts in the aerospace industry. The process enables cheap tooling, which is important since the product series are limited. In the process a rigid and a soft tool are combined to form a metal blank into the required shape. Most components made in this way are “flanged parts”, i.e. parts with a rather flat web plate and curved flanges at the periphery of the web plate. For flanged parts the determination of spring back of the flanges, straight or curved, is important, since the forming dies compensated with the spring back, will result in accurate products. Like all metal forming processes elastic and plastic deformations are combined in the same process cycle. The elastic deformations result in spring back and residual stresses, the ratio between these two depends on the shape of the product and the distribution of the plastic and elastic deformations. In this research aluminum alloys were used. The low Young’s modulus of these alloys results in rather high elastic responses upon deformation. Other aspects that have been evaluated are the effect of processing parameters like friction and distribution of strains. For stretch flanges the strain is distributed evenly along the flange, but not for shrink flanges, where buckling plays a role. Experimental research shows that the spring back of the flanges depend on a number of variables like the thickness, flange geometry, and material parameters. The spring back of a flange is also a mixture of different contributions: spring back due to the bending over the bend line, spring back due to the curvature of the flange, and spring back due to in-plane deformations. The research performed focused on the different components of the spring back and their interaction. Analysis of the data resulted in a new parameter by which a number of variables could be captured. This improves the understanding of the spring back phenomena and is a generalization of the results.

Abstract:
When the distance between a visual target and nearby flankers falls below a critical distance, target discrimination declines precipitously. This is called “crowding.” Many researchers have proposed that selective attention plays a role in crowding. However, although some research has examined the effects of directing attention toward versus away from the targets, no previous research has assessed how attentional allocation varies as a function of target–flanker distance in crowding. Here, we used ERPs to assess the operation of attention during crowding, focusing on the attention-related N2pc component. We used a typical crowding task in which participants were asked to report the category (vowel/consonant) of a lateralized target letter flanked by distractor letters at different distances. We tested the hypothesis that attention fails when the target–flanker distance becomes too small for attention to operate effectively. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found that N2pc amplitude was maximal at intermediate target–flanker distances and decreased substantially when crowding became severe. In addition, we examined the sustained posterior contralateral negativity (SPCN), which reflects the amount of information being maintained in working memory. Unlike the N2pc component, the SPCN increased in amplitude at small target–flanker distances, suggesting that observers stored information about the target and flankers in working memory when attention failed to select the target. Together, the N2pc and SPCN results suggest that attention and working memory play distinctive roles in crowding: Attention operates to minimize interference from the flankers at intermediate target–flanker distances, whereas working memory may be recruited when attention fails to select the target at small target–flanker distances.

Abstract:
Abstract Does phonology contribute to effects of orthographically related flankers in the flankers task? In order to answer this question, we implemented the flanker equivalent of a pseudohomophone priming manipulation that has been widely used to demonstrate automatic phonological processing during visual word recognition. In Experiment 1, central target words were flanked on each side by either a pseudohomophone of the target (e.g., roze rose roze), an orthographic control pseudoword (rone rose rone), or an unrelated pseudoword (mirt rose mirt). Both the pseudohomophone and the orthographic control conditions produced faster and more accurate responses to central targets, but performance in these two conditions did not differ significantly. Experiment 2 tested the same stimuli in a masked priming paradigm and replicated the standard finding in French that pseudohomophone primes produce significantly faster responses to target words than orthographic control primes. Therefore, contrary to its impact on masked priming, phonology does not contribute to effects of flanker relatedness, which would appear to be driven primarily by orthographic overlap.

In this paper, the task of deliberately reducing torque fasteners flange connection at build pipelines to ensure the initial tightness of the connection , reducing the weight of the pipeline , the alignment of the stress- strain state of the compound and determining the residual torque fasteners, providing connections for leaks. With decreasing torque fasteners ( intentional or natural ) will be sealed flanged if the remaining torque is sufficient to compensate for the pressure in the pipeline and prevent shear movement of the flange and gasket relative to each other . Found that the flange connection remains sealed with natural and deliberate reduction torque fasteners to 75-80 % compared to the initial .Sealing flange connections using technology and standard fastenings to reduce their weight by 10-50 %, and the replacement of flanges and pipe material - a whole lot of pipelines at 30-65 %.

Abstract:
This paper describes research that has investigated a process for forming flanged sheet metal parts without dedicated tooling by repeated localized deformation—an incremental process. The complete formation of a shrink flange over a former by a grooved roller, moving around the flange in a series of passes, is analysed by the finite element method and reasonable agreement with experimental results shown. Some evidence is presented that the use of a grooved roller can extend the forming limits of a conventional single die pressing operation. The predicted reaction distribution at the fixed edge of a variety of flanges during their incremental formation by different rollers is then examined. It is shown that the most significant reactions are limited to the vicinity of the current position of the roller. This result leads to a proposal that the form tool might be replaced by non-dedicated tooling, to support the component web only in the region near to the roller. This proposal is tested experimentally and the principle of a dieless flange-forming process is successfully demonstrated. Such a process may be of benefit to any industry that produces a variety of flanged parts in small batches, for example airframe manufacture. Further research is proposed to develop a prototype machine based on the principle outlined here.

Abstract:
The tightness of bolted flanged joints subjected to elevated temperature is not properly addressed by flange design codes. The development of an analytical method based on the flexibility of the different joint components and their elastic interaction could serve as a powerful tool for elevated temperature flange designs. This paper addresses the effect of the internal fluid operating temperature on the variation of the bolt load and consequently on the gasket stress in bolted joints. The theoretical analysis used to predict the gasket load variation as a result of unequal radial and axial thermal expansion of the joint elements is outlined. It details the analytical basis of the elastic interaction model and the thermally induced deflections that are used to evaluate the load changes. Two flange joint type configurations are treated: a joint with identical pair of flanges and a joint with a cover plate. The analytical models are validated and verified by comparison to finite element results.

Abstract:
Flanders is often portrayed as an area with an important specificity and therefore with a regional identity that is strong, if not irreducible to any sense of belonging to a wider national or European community. However, general public opinion has always varied on the question of what is Flanders and on the criteria that could define its identity. The complexity of the territory was increased by the status of border region whose delimitation and sovereignty were subject to fluctuations due to wars and treaties. This applies particularly to the period concerned i.e. from the Franco-Austrian border treaties in 1769 and in 1779 to the end of the First French Empire in 1815 and the Treaty of Kortrijk in 1820: corrections, revolutions, wars, annexations and departmentalisation shaped and reshaped the Flemish territory. How could this permanent reshaping interact with the allegedly strong identities of the border populations? The observing of the family, social, economic, military, religious or even linguistic practices tends to show the compatibility between different local, provincial, national and international references that create plural identities, in France as well as in the Belgian provinces. The plasticity of these practices and affiliations leads us to deconstruct the Flemish identity that was essentially built afterwards, while it was still in development during the study period and not fully developed before the second half of the 19th century. Thus the measures that claim to permanently establish any identity or boundary, whatever or wherever they may be, should be considered carefully, by historicising the process of identity building

Abstract:

Designers of information communication technologies (ICTs) in public space often fall into the trap of designing only for the "flaneur," an unembedded mobile subject in the generic global city. They deracinate the experience of space and support the global flâneur as the paradigmatic deracinated subject. In this thesis I propose a specific vision of "en-racinating" media, that is media that takes the specificity of place seriously. A careful consideration of public art can help us in this endeavor by leveraging the artistic notion of "site specificity" in the most culturally grounded meaning of the term. Abstract:
The 17th and 18th centuries appear as a period of conquests and territorial changes in Europe, particularly in Flanders. In 1668, the southern part of the former Spanish Low Countries are attached to the French crown. To bring peace back in the province, Louis XIV decided to create a court for the newly conquered territories, the conseil souverain of Tournai. This sovereign court replaced the former councils of Flanders and Mons and the Great Council of Malines to judge in appeal the cases brought before the courts of the annexed territories. In 1686, the institution obtained the title of parlement to be definitely assimilated. During its first years of existence, the parlement of Flanders had to assert its particularities. Indeed, when Louis XIV created the court, he promised to keep the Flemish customs and privileges. He therefore appointed local jurists who knew them. In 1691, Ladislas de Baralle became General Procurator. He had one of the longest careers, twenty-three years of office. If today the prosecutor’s function mainly applies to litigation, his role during Ancien Régime was much larger. He embodied the King’s prerogatives and ensured the enforcement of royal legislation in the parlement’s jurisdiction. In spite of his promises, Louis XIV tried progressively to enforce “French” law and procedure in the realm while Flanders asserted its particular Coutumes and privileges. Born in Flanders but representing Louis XIV, how could Baralle balance both roles ?

Abstract:
My PhD dissertation (Sciences Po Paris & Université Saint-Louis) considers the dilemma generated by immigration and diversity for political elites in two culturally and linguistic distinct sub-national communities: Flanders (Belgium) and Quebec (Canada). For such communities, immigration represents both opportunities and challenges. Immigration might increase the relative demographic strength of the sub-national community yet, it might also weaken its cultural or linguistic cohesion. Focusing on the 1999-2014 timeframe and using discursive institutionalism, I ask how subnational elites respond to this dilemma. Using discourse analysis, I identify the position of members of regional parliaments and their rhetoric on four dimensions of immigrant integration (institutional, demographic, linguistic, and cultural). Contrary to other researches that have focused only on sub-nationalist and regionalist party positions, my focus on political discourse allows me to show how ideas circulate and evolve through legislatures. My results run contrary to some expectations from immigration studies and federalism theory. I show that key arguments are shared between political elites when it comes to the linguistic, demographic and cultural dimensions of immigrant integration. Nevertheless and independently from the conceptions of integration put forward, I show that clear divergences remain when it comes to federal-subnational institutional arrangements for immigrant integration

Abstract:
This thesis examines Janet Flanner, an expatriate writer whose fiction and journalism have been essential to the development of American literary modernism in that her work, taken together, comprises a remarkable autobiographical document which records her own unique experience of the period while simultaneously contributing to its particular aesthetic mission. Although recent discussions have opened debate as to how a variety of discourses can be read as autobiographical, Flanner’s fifty years worth of cultural, political, and personal observation requires an analysis which incorporates traditional and contemporary theories concerning life-writing. Essentially, autobiographical scholarship must continue to push the boundaries of analysis, focusing on the interactions and reactions between the outer world and the inner self. This thesis, therefore, will situate Janet Flanner as an important writer whose experience among the modernist literary community in Europe informs, and is recorded in, her writing.

Abstract:
Flanged joints are used in high pressure applications such as process piping, pressure vessels, risers, pipelines and subsea production systems. These flanges are subjected to external loads in addition to pressure. A brief description of high pressure flanges standards is given. Design of high pressure flanged joints are covered in many design codes. A review of allowable stresses, load factors for bolting, flanges and bolt preload requirements has been made for the following codes: ASME VIII-2, ASME VIII-3, ASME B31.3 Chapter IX, API 6A, API 6X, API 17D, API 17TR7, API 17TR8, API 17G, EN 1591-1 and NORSOK U-001. This paper also presents analytically based structural load-capacity (ultimate strength) design equations for flanged joints. The design equations are used to calculate rated working pressure and flange-face separation load-capacity of API 6A type 6BX flanges. Future code recommendations for flange design are provided.

Abstract:
Weld neck flanges on piping systems are susceptible to flange face corrosion when they are exposed to corrosive environments. This paper examines the maximum amount of corrosion a weld neck flange face could tolerate without loosing structural integrity and hence the flange is fit for service. A parametric study using finite element method was used to examine the entire range of weld neck flanges listed in ASME B16.5 Code, Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings. From the study, a number of tables were developed limiting the amount of corrosion for the various classes and sizes of flanges.

Abstract:
Deformation characteristics of pipe flanges are important in the leak rate based design of gasketed flanged connections. Not only the equilibrium of force between bolts and the clamped parts including flanges and a gasket but also the displacement between them should be considered in the design of gasketed flanged connections. Recently, finite element method (FEM) has widely been used in the analysis of flanged connections. However, analyses of pipe flanges based on the analytical method using classical theories such as the strength of materials are still important when parametric calculations of flanges are necessary. In this study, a method to analyze the stress and deformation of welding neck type flanges is demonstrated and the validity of the analysis is checked by experiment. A software using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is developed based on the method. The advantages of the software are that stresses and deformation of flanges are easily calculated by selecting a flange size and design conditions from a database. The validity of the results obtained by the software is also confirmed by comparing the calculated results with those obtained by FEA. A series of calculations have been done for Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) flanges and the deformation characteristics are clarified when a flange is subjected to bolt loads and an internal pressure.

Abstract:
Abstract One important element in the integrity of bolted flanged joints is the condition of the flange seating surfaces which contact the gasket. Just as the competence of the bolted joint assembler is a key element in the integrity of an otherwise properly designed and constructed bolted flanged joint assembly, when the decision is made to re-machine the gasket seating surfaces on the flange(s) the competence of the personnel who operate the field machining equipment can have an impact on those features of the flanges that affect alignment and surface finish. This paper outlines a proposed industry framework for the training and qualification of personnel who conduct field machining of flanges that is like what is currently in Appendix A of ASME PCC-1 for bolted joint assembly personnel.

Full text
Abstract:
The leakage tightness behavior of bolted flange joints is compromised due to high temperature effects and in particular when creep of the materials of the different components of the bolted flanged joint take place. The relaxation of bolted flanged joints is often estimated from the creep of the gasket and the bolts. The creep behavior of the flange ring and the attached structures such as the shell and the hub is often neglected. Apart from an acknowledgement of relaxation due to creep, the designer has no specific tools to accurately assess this effect on the bolt load relaxation. The objective of this paper is to present an analytical approach capable of predicting the bolt load relaxation due to creep of the attached structures. The proposed approach is validated by comparison with 3D FE models of different size flanges. An emphasis will be put towards the importance of including creep of the attached structures in high temperature flange designs.

Abstract:
The Steelproducts Offshore Compact Flange System (SPO CFS) has proven to be an exceptionally good flange design for the oil and gas industry with service temperatures normally ranging from −100°C to +250°C. High reliability, small size and low weight are properties the offshore industry has appreciated. The design relies on a high bolt pre-tension in order to obtain the double sealing capability and the static behavior. For limited temperatures, the high pre-tension can be applied without any risk of loosing the pre-tension when the operating temperature is reached. For high temperatures, the temperature dependent material properties in flange and bolt need to be carefully evaluated and taken into account when designing the connection. Finite element analysis simulating all relevant phases from flange make-up to process start up and shut down have been performed in order to study flange behavior such as bolt tension, flange stresses, and seal contact. Relatively simple analytical equations have been used in order to predict the flange behavior and hence been basis for choosing bolting material, prestress and flange face angle. For process industry dealing with temperatures up to 720°C, it is now possible to use compact flanges. The use of compact flanged connection will first of all increase the reliability of the flanged connection, reducing the need for maintenance.

Full text
Abstract:
In December 2013, a new version of EN 1591-1 (1) was issued. Apart from several other modifications, the treatment of external loads was included in this calculation standard for circular bolted flanged joints. In the former standard, only axial forces and bending moments resulting from the piping system were considered; in the new issue lateral forces and shear moments can also be treated. There are two possibilities to counterbalance the lateral forces and the shear moments: firstly by metallic contact of the flanges and secondly by friction between the gasket and the flange surfaces. While the first option cannot occur in the type of flange connection (with a floating gasket between the flanges) covered by EN 1591-1, the lateral displacement of the flanges can only be prevented by friction between the gasket and flange surfaces. Therefore, the friction factor μG was introduced in the calculation procedure. In an informative annex of EN 1591-1 (Annex E), some friction factors are published exemplarily. These factors are based on values published in the German nuclear codes KTA 3201.2 (2) and KTA 3211.2 (3). The origin of these values can’t be retraced anymore. For this reason, it is stated in Annex E that these values are probably very conservative, and that an experimental determination of the factors should be preferentially used. Incidentally, overly conservative friction factors lead to higher required bolt forces to counterbalance the external loads, which may result in an overstressing of the components of the bolted flanged joint. Therefore, the European Sealing Association (ESA) decided to determine generic data for different types of gaskets which could be published in the next revision of EN 1591-1. In this paper the results of this project are presented.

Abstract:
Many leakage troubles were reported in petroleum and petrochemical refineries for bolted flanged connections in elevated temperature service due to the effect of differential thermal expansion in flanges, bolts, gasket, and so on as an assembly. The leakages were found especially in shut down condition for petroleum refineries and chemical plants, even if the weather seal (rain cover) was installed to prevent the flange assembly from rapid cooling by wind or rain. On the other hand, the leakage mechanism of the bolted flanged connections with weather seal under the condition of wind flow is not still clearly understood. Therefore, the leakage behavior on bolted flanged connections is investigated using the latest computerized fluid dynamics (CFD) and the structural thermal analysis with nonlinear material properties in flange and gasket (FEM: Finite Element Method). The actual environmental effect such as wind is modeled by CFD, and the plasticity is also taken into account by the nonlinear material properties in flange and gasket by FEM. The case studies are performed for 6”, 12” and 18” for Class 2,500 with ring joint gasket. In addition, the two temperature and pressure cycles including first start-up, normal operation, shut-down, and the consequent start-up, normal operation, emergency shut-down conditions are considered. Thus, the leakage phenomena are able to evaluate, and the guideline is proposed for maintenance.
