In the 1960's, psychedelic drugs were a part of not only popular culture, but also cuttingedge psychology research. Scientists were studying these drugs in the hope of understanding and treating various psychological and societal ills; but as psychedelics got caught up in the counter-culture, they fell out of favor with the public, and practically vanished from the research world as quickly as they'd appeared. Now, decades after they all but disappeared, psychedelics are making a comeback. Focusing primarily on research with psychedelics to treat post-traumatic stress disorder as well as anxiety and depression associated with terminal illness, this thesis examines the researchers who've brought psychedelic medicine back from the brink and the work they're doing to explore the potential within these complex and controversial drugs.

Abstract:
The somewhat controversial Swedish online discussion forum Flashback Forum (Flashback) is used by a large part of the Swedish population and contains large amounts of information with a wide diversity regarding subjects. Flashback is unique, not least with its focus on freedom of speech, and is often considered unreliable and questionable. However, the large amount of information stored enable the use of the forum as a source of everyday information, given the fact that the user remain critical in their approach to the information retrieved. It seems reasonable to assume that students also use Flashback for this reason; and they can be assumed to have certain experiences regarding searching for information and judging the trustworthiness of found information. The purpose of this essay is therefore to study how Swedish students use Flashback to search for and access information, and how they relate to this information. To study this some concepts from Reijo Savolainen’s theory of everyday information practices has been used, in which he takes a social phenomenological perspective to everyday life information seeking (ELIS). These concepts are information source horizons, information fields and pathways, and stock of knowledge. For the method a survey was used, which was distributed online during March 2020 mainly in different student groups on Facebook. The results showed that a majority of the respondents use Flashback to search for and access everyday information, which was mainly related to current crimes and suspects. The majority of the respondents retained a critical approach to the information and used it mainly to still their curiosity about cases mentioned on news sites or papers. This study shows that Flashback can – and is – used by students to retrieve everyday information, mainly because the sought for information is not available, or not openly available, elsewhere. This study also shows that despite Flashback’s questionable reliability, the nature of the forum, and the fact that most respondents had a relatively bad attitude towards the forum, Flashback has a great potential as a source for everyday information of minor importance, and for taking part of others’ experiences.

Hatem, Fares. "Flashback analysis and avoidance in swirl burners." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/103700/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is aimed to investigate and demonstrate the feasibility and validity of various flame flashback resistance techniques for premixed fuel conditions. It presents a series of experiments to determine the impact of different configurations on flame flashback mechanisms. Experiments were performed using a 150 kW tangential swirl burner working on premixed mode with various swirl numbers; the flow field characteristics were measured by 1D LDA. The first part of the project targeted the effect of central fuel injector geometries on flame flashback mechanisms, especially combustion induced vortex breakdown (CIVB). It was found that changing the central fuel injector outside diameter can significantly alter the flame flashback mechanism. Large injector diameters result in boundary layer flashback (BLF), contrary, the use of small injectors diameter led to CIVB. Thus a dimensionless number (χ) which represent the ratio between the injector outside diameter and the nozzle inside diameter was introduced. Using this dimensionless number the critical value of transition from CIVB to BLF has been defined, the value being χ= 0.280 for Sg=1.12 and χ= 0.320 for Sg= 0.9. The second part was about the effect of using axial air injection instead of central fuel injectors. It was found that axial air jets have a considerable potential for flame stability requirements, they producing wider stability operation than that of central injectors. Moreover, the stability limits increase regarding both equivalence ratio and inlet tangential velocity. It appeared that using such air jets could reduce the combustor maintenance cost that arises due to a continuous harsh environment. However, it was found that axial air jets could enforce flame propagation during flashback via wall boundary layer. Thus, the third part of the study was about the validity of using micromeshes to improve BLF resistance in addition to axial air injection. It was found that using both techniques produced high flashback resistance for both mechanisms, i.e. CIVB and BLF.

Abdulsada, Mohammed. "Flashback and blowoff characteristics of gas turbine swirl combustor." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/24193/.

Full text
Abstract:
Gas turbines are extensively used in combined cycle power systems. These form about 20% of global power generating capacity, normally being fired on natural gas, but this is expected in the future to move towards hydrogen enriched gaseous fuels to reduce CO2 emissions. Gas turbine combined cycles can give electrical power generation efficiencies of up to 60%, with the aim of increasing this to 70% in the next 10 to 15 years, whilst at the same time substantially reducing emissions of contaminants such as NOx. The gas turbine combustor is an essential and critical component here. These are universally stabilized with swirl flows, which give very wide blowoff limits, and with appropriate modification can be adjusted to give very low NOx and other emission. Lean premixed combustion is commonly used at pressures between 15 to 30 bar, these even out hot spots and minimise formation of thermal NOx. Problems arise because improving materials technology/improved cooling techniques allow higher turbine inlet temperatures, hence higher efficiencies, but with the drawback of potentially higher emissions and stability problems. This PhD study has widely investigated and analysed two different kinds of gas turbine swirl burners. The research has included experimental investigation and computational simulation. Mainly, the flashback and blowoff limits have been comprehensively analysed to investigate their effect upon swirl burner operation. The study was extended by using different gas mixtures, including either pure gas or a combination of more than one gas like natural gas, methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The first combustor is a 100 kW tangential swirl combustor made of stainless steel that has been experimentally and theoretically analysed to study and mitigate the effect of flashback phenomena. The use of a central fuel injector, cylindrical confinement and exhaust sleeve are shown to give large benefits in terms of flashback resistance and acts to reduce and sometimes eliminate any coherent structures which may be located along the axis of symmetry. The Critical Boundary Velocity Gradient is used for characterisation of flashback, both via the original Lewis and von Elbe formula and via new analysis using CFD and investigation of boundary layer conditions just in front of the flame front. Conclusions are drawn as to mitigation technologies. It is recognized how isothermal conditions produce strong Precessing Vortex Cores that are fundamental in producing the ii final flow field, whilst the Central Recirculation Zones are dependent on pressure decay ratio inside the combustion chamber. Combustion conditions showed the high similarity between experiments and simulation. Flashback was demonstrated to be a factor highly related to the strength of the Central Recirculation Zone for those cases where a Combustion Induced Vortex Breakdown was allowed to enter the swirl chamber, whilst cases where a bluff body impeded its passage showed a considerable improvement to the resistance of the phenomenon. The use of nozzle constrictions also reduced flashback at high Reynolds number (Re). All these results were intended to contribute to better designs of future combustors. The second piece of work of this PhD research included comprehensive experimental work using a generic swirl burner (with three different blade inserts to give different swirl numbers) and has been used to examine the phenomena of flashback and blowoff in the swirl burner in the context of lean premixed combustion. Cylindrical and conical confinements have been set up and assembled with the original design of the generic swirl combustor. In addition to that, multi-fuel blends used during the experimental work include pure methane, pure hydrogen, hydrogen / methane mixture, carbon dioxide/ methane mixture and coke oven gas. The above investigational analysis has proved the flashback limits decrease when swirl numbers decrease for the fuel blends that contain 30% or less hydrogen. Confinements would improve the flashback limit as well. Blowoff limits improve with a lower swirl number and it is easier to recognise the gradual extinction of the flame under blowoff conditions. The use of exhaust confinement has created a considerable improvement in blowoff. Hydrogen enriched fuels can improve the blowoff limit in terms of increasing heat release, which is higher than heat release with natural gas. However, the confinements complicate the flashback, especially when the fuel contains a high percentage of hydrogen. The flashback propensity of the hydrogen/methane blends becomes quite strong. The most important features in gas turbines is the possibility of using different kinds of fuel. This matter has been discussed extensively in this project. By matching flashback/blowoff limits, it has been found that for fuels containing up to 30% of hydrogen, the designer would be able to switch the same gas turbine combustor to multifuels whilst producing the same power output.

Abstract:

The aim of our study was to examine Swedish crime reporters’ approach to the social medium Flashback. Our main focus was the crime reporters’ use of the medium Flashback, and attitude towards their own use of media ethics in relation to the medium Flashback. Flashback as a medium is not obliged to any media ethics and lacks a legally accountable publisher. In the search for information about committed crimes people tends to visit Flashback for the information that the traditional media cannot offer. In that sense Flashback challenges the foundation of media ethics today. That is why we found it interesting to study crime reporters in particular. The study used a qualitative approach and was conducted through interviews with eight crime reporters. We have used theories about media ethics, social media and participatory journalism to explore the development in the area and how journalists have adapted to this change. The result shows that there are journalists who use Flashback as a journalistic tool to find information, to save time and as a mean to keep up-to-date. And moreover, the study gives examples on how an online forum with anonymous sources can be used – like any other source, as long as you are source-critical.

Abstract:
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is classified as an anxiety disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV of the American Psychiatric Association. It is characterised by three main symptom clusters: re-experiencing (of which flashbacks are the hallmark symptom); hyperarousal; and avoidance. Diagnosis requires not only the occurrence of a traumatic event but also an intense emotional (fear, horror, or helplessness) reaction to it. Epidemiological data suggest that 80% of people will experience at least one qualifying event in their lifetime. However, prevalence rates of PTSD are much lower. Additionally, individuals with PTSD tend to experience flashbacks of only two or three particular ‘hot-spots’ of the entire trauma. Therefore, the question arises: why do some moments of trauma flash back and not others? Clinical-cognitive theories of PTSD suggest that shifts in information processing at the time of the trauma (i.e. peri-traumatically) are the mechanism whereby flashbacks are created. However, for ethical and practical reasons peri-traumatic processes in real trauma are seldom studied. An analogue traumatic event has been developed to help study peri-traumatic processes – the trauma film paradigm. This paradigm is used through-out this thesis with the goal of investigating peri-traumatic cognitive mechanisms in flashback formation. Studies 1 and 2 extend previous work using dual tasks to manipulate intrusions in-line with clinical-cognitive theories. Studies 3 and 4 use neuroimaging techniques to investigate brain regions involved in real-time peri-traumatic encoding of analogue flashbacks. Chapter 9 presents heart rate data relating to peri-traumatic physiological response to flashback encoding. All of these studies support the notion that peri-traumatic shifts in processing are involved in flashback formation. In particular, Study 3 suggests that there may be a particular neural signature associated with the formation of flashbacks. Investigation of these brain areas may help solve the questions of why some individuals are more vulnerable to PTSD and why only a few specific moments of a trauma subsequently flashback. Furthermore, an improved understanding of the cognitive mechanisms involved in flashback formation may allow theory and evidence led improvements in PTSD treatments.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Trying to improve gas turbines to be flexible to use different fuels requires a big challenge for gas turbine designers when working with current operation stability issues. Flashback is the major challenge for low NOx premixed combustion of high hydrogen content fuels. Flashback in gas turbine combustors is usually assigned to four mechanisms; core flow flashback, combustion instability flashback, boundary layer flashback (BLF) and combustion induced vortex breakdown (CIVB). The last two mechanisms are most common in swirl combustors, which are used to have better operation stability and low emissions. Improvement of swirl combustors against CIVB has been studied extensively to improve the combustion stability. The most promising solutions of CIVB are limited because the improvement against CIVB worsens the system against boundary layer flashback. Boundary layer flashback is theoretically based on the Lewis von Elbe’s formula for laminar flame, with formulas also used in turbulent flames (with some reservation) by most recent studies. However, the majority of studies take the flame side of the formula, parameters such as fuel type and blends, pressure and preheat temperature, and try to improve the understanding of the boundary layer flashback hoping to find ways to reduce its onset. However, the effect of the burner nozzle has not been studied in many types of research, especially the internal nozzle surfaces. Therefore, this work aims to study the effect of regular surface roughness on the boundary layer flashback in a 150 kW tangential swirl burner. The first part of this study is a numerical simulation using the in-house code Hydr3D to simulate the flow over riblets with different geometries (blade, triangular, scallop, diamond, lotus and sharkskin). The numerical results demonstrate that the blade riblets were the best at reducing the boundary layer thickness and consequently showed the best drag reduction around 11% compared to the smooth surface while the sharkskin geometry was the worse in drag reduction with only 0.5%. vi Although the blade showed the best drag reduction, its weak structure and complex machine specifications make the scallop, lotus, and diamond and sharkskin riblet to be chosen for manufacturing on small discs. The scallop riblet on the nozzle was manufactured using wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). The second part of the study was isothermal experimental tests for manufactured surfaces. The flow structure was measured using a 1D LDA. The results show that the riblets alter the flow structure near the wall and increase the velocity gradient which helps the flow to reach a velocity 0.99 from mainstream velocity at y+ < 10 compared to y+ > 30 for a smooth surface. The third part of the study was obtained with combustion and isothermal experiments using two different stainless steel woven meshes that served as a liner for the nozzle burner. A 50μm and a 150μm wire diameter meshes were used. The isothermal test showed that the 150μm mesh denoted the best shift of the velocity gradient close to the wall. The combustion experiments showed that the two meshes help to improve system against the boundary layer with the 150μm being the best. Thus, it was demonstrated that BLF could be reduced using microsurfaces, which in conjunction with other techniques, have the potential of increasing optionality, an essential feature for fuel flexibility in Gas Turbines.

Abstract:
This report fulfils the purpose of expanding the understanding of how anonymous actors can discuss victims of crime and perpetrators at an anonymous forum. The study is based on three discussion threads at the Flashback Forum where crimes are discussed and accordingly victims of crime and perpetrators. To analyze the data, Michel Foucualt's (2003) theory of panopticism and Erving Goffman's (2011) theory of stigmatization and social deviants has been used. Foucault’s theory has been used to describe how the surveillance causes individuals to act on the basis of prevailing norms through surveillance and punishment. Goffman's theory has contributed to an understanding of how individuals, who do not fit into norms, get labelled as deviants and therefore get stigmatized. These two theories have been combined to explain how anonymous actors describe victims and perpetrators, and how information can be shared/speculated. The study has an abductive approach as the empiricism and theory interact to create a deeper understanding of the discourse regarding victims of crime and perpetrators. The study assumes a discourse analytic perspective and it is primarily inspired by Bacchi's discourse analysis (2011, referenced in Bergström & Boréus, 2018) and Foucault's (1993) thoughts about the order of discourse. The results show that, among other things, actors can monitor each other like panopticism (Foucault, 2003) and this can be done based on norms and socially deviant behavior from the norms (Goffman, 2011). Furthermore, the results show that there are both differences and similarities when it comes to how victims of crime and perpetrators are portrayed at Flashback. For example, in some cases, the actors discuss whether both the perpetrators and the victims fit into the picture as social deviants or not, based on their involvement in the crime. Thus, the persons involved are stigmatized both through their involvement in the crime and the information that is spread about them over the internet. However, the discourse of the victims of crime and the perpetrators was different when the crime was an accident. In that case the involved, to some extent, were compared with each other. The results also show that actors often position themselves as truth-tellers, whether it is speculation or sharing information. By referring to a personal relationship or knowledge of the people involved, there are little room for misinterpretation. This can create discussions in the discourse that result in stigmatization even among the actors.

The Covid-19-pandemic, or Coronapandemic as it is popularly called, has affected everyone's livesfor over a year with various restrictions and 3,5 million people have died with the Covid-19-virus.Despite this, many do not want to be vaccinated against Covid-19 now that vaccines have beendeveloped. A survey conducted in January 2021 shows that 63% of Sweden's population want tobe vaccinated against Covid-19. This can be considered unfortunate because the World HealthOrganization listed vaccine resistance as one of ten global health threats in 2019. It is of interestto investigate vaccine resistance during the Covid-19-pandemic as it is a relatively unexploredarea. The purpose of this study is to investigate how vaccination opponents express themselvesabout the Covid-19-vaccines on the internet forum Flashback. This has been investigated through a netnographic qualitative study where the content of 9different threads on Flashback has been studied. The results of the study have been analyzed usingUlrich Beck's concepts of "risk", Anthony Gidden's definition of the terms "trust" and"expertsystem" as well as previous research on vaccine resistance on social media. The results ofthe study indicate that people who were against the Covid-19-vaccine tended to see the vaccine asa major risk. They were afraid of various side effects and they tended to value the vaccine as agreater risk than getting Covid-19. A common trend among vaccine opponents on Flashback wasthat they tended to distrust the science behind vaccines and instead prefered alternative methodsinstead of vaccines. They tended to think that Covid-19 is not a dangerous disease or that the wholedisease is invented by pharmaceutical companies, the media, the authorities and the governmenttogether. Vaccine opponents on Flashback tended to believe that the vaccine against Covid-19 willeither kill or sterilize people to depopulate the planet, or that the drug companies want to makemoney off vaccines. This indicates that vaccine opponents had a lot of mistrust of the Covid-19-vaccine as an expertsystem, but also pharmaceutical companies, the government, authorities and media.

Abstract:
This paper examines the phenomenon flashbacks, often named the Proust phenomenon, through the lens of experience design. The research question is Can flashbacks be triggered through experience design? It would then be possible to call flashbacks memories recycled memories. To answer the question former studies were researched, mainly from the standpoint of cognitive psychology. The thesis discusses how different senses produce flashbacks and how they can be used as triggers. The difference between the connection of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell to experiences and flashbacks are examined, especially the extraordinary connection between flashbacks and the olfactory sense. This topic can not be completed without looking into Marcel Proust‘s texts in À la recherche du temps perdu and his poetic description on how flashbacks work. Through the lens of Proust, flashbacks are discussed as narratives and the thesis looks into the significance of the memories as a building block for our sense of ourselves. Several Icelandic storytellers are interviewed about their memories. Through their interviews the storytelling aspect of sharing memories becomes prominent, leading to a discussion on the social aspect of memory sharing. The thesis ends with a study in triggering flashbacks through an experience. An exhibition presenting memories of others through sensory stimuli is used to see the effects of memory sharing through appealing to our senses.

Abstract:
Background: Constructions of unaccompanied children have been researched to some extent. Concepts of the children have been studied in media and policy documents amongst others. How the children are constructed within an "everyday context", in form of an open online discussion forum (Flashback Forum), and how the constructions become credible, are regarded as under-researched. Aim: The aim of the present study was to identify different discourses concerning unaccompanied children on the Flashback Forum, with regard to their rhetorical organization. Discourse is meant as a way to talk about and understand the world that constructs an object or phenomenon in a particular way. Method: To answer the aim, a discursive psychological approach was used, which focuses on how credibility and truth are created in communication. Based on a theoretical model, including the four rhetorical techniques category entitlement, empirical repertoire, consensus and extreme case formulations, it was examined how the writers at the forum created truth and responded to others' beliefs about the children. Result: The results showed that unaccompanied children are surrounded by the discourses: the adults, the children, the rapists, the special treated, the sexually vulnerable and the discourse of the biologically male sex. Discourses were used in parallel in the speeches and to back up arguments at the forum. The writers used the studied rhetorical techniques to build credibility in the statements. With specific expression, facts about unaccompanied children were created.

Abstract:
In this thesis we consider cinema’s representations of mental images. Our central concerns are the formal aspects of the presentation of memory and imagination, and the various functions which the different types of mental images perform. While along the way we engage with a number of expedient theories, on the whole the argument is free of any over-arching theoretical approach, instead focusing largely on the evidence of the wide range of films — from different eras, genres and national cinemas — with which we engage. We begin with a consideration of filmic representations of memory, tackling such questions as: What exactly is a flashback? What different functions do flashbacks perform? What is the relationship between flashback and the mental images of memory? Identifying an inadequacy in current terminology, we here introduce the concept of ‘act of memory’ in order to distinguish between representations of the past which constitute an analogue of the mental images of memory and more properly subjective representations of mental images. In Part II we develop a taxonomy of the major forms of imagination. Here our discussion of imagination draws on cognitive and phenomenological theories of imagination, and the chapter on dreams draws substantially on Freud. In our consideration of the functions of the various sorts of mental images we establish a series of character types who are prone to experiencing mental images. Throughout Part II we argue that representations of mental images are often closely related to themes of madness — that many representations of mental images can be understood as traces of madness.

Abstract:
This study examines how the taboo subject of suicide is communicated, perceived and experienced on the largest Swedish online discussion platform Flashback Forum. The aim is to describe and analyze how the subject is constructed and reconstructed in 2.484 suicide specific discussion posts initiated by suicidal individuals on the forum. The empirical material is based on 25 threads active during a one-year period. The sample was categorized by using an analytical tool designed by Malin Wreder (2007) based on concepts from Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory. Two conflicting approaches to suicide were identified. The suicide tolerant discourse views suicide as an accepted way out of prolonged suffering. The other suicide critical discourse has an opposing view. Within these discourses four key concepts (suicide, freedom, responsibility and future) was identified as nodal points. Frank’s theory of illness narratives was used to place the stories of the discussion participants within a larger theoretical framework. One conclusion is that the cultural preferred idea about suicide as a temporary curable condition is challenged by the suicide tolerant discourse. For a suicidal individual suffering can be experienced as eternal hence a reception with one-sided focus on restitution may hinder rather than help.

Abstract:
This essay is a study of how English is used in a Swedish discussion forum called Flashback. The mixing of two languages when speaking or writing is called Code switching. Code switching often occurs in bilingual societies. In Sweden it is possible to say that English is a second language due to the daily encounter with the language through education, but also through different media. The daily encounter with English and the number of English loan words in Swedish might be a reason why code switching exists in Sweden. The material that was analyzed in this essay was collected from Flashback and analyzed with a method based on Sharp’s (2001) study of spoken language. The aim of this study was to see how often and in what way the users on Flashback code switched between Swedish and English. The results showed that even though English was used in the discussion, Swedish was the main language. Most of the code switches that were found in the material occurred in mixed units, in other words English was mixed with Swedish.

Abstract:
Flashback is one of the most well known internet forums in Sweden. People visit the site to discuss different topics, to share information, to express opinions or to read posts by others. On Flashback’s ‘crime forum’ the users gather to share information but also to express opinions. These discussions have a tendency to become heated and with the increased wave of gangrelated violence and shootings in Malmö, Sweden 2018, forums like Flashback play an important role in what information is available to the public. This case was used to form the study’s main questions; How are facts used in threads and what are their sources? How do users interpret these events and how is it expressed through reasoning and personal opinions? How are opinions, behaviour and virtual community formed in an environment based on anonymity? To form a case and further investigate these questions we have organized different Flashback posts related to the Malmö-shootings and categorized them into themes. The interpretations would later on show various conclusions. Some conclusions were predicted, while other conclusions were shown when analyzing the material. The results showed that flashback-users use facts when sharing a link, to strengthen the shared information, to support theories about the case and sometimes when discussing the victims or suspects involved. How users interpret the events on Flashback is based on the intention of the individual. Some users are more likely to discuss political aspects. Other users intend to discuss the matter with an humours tone, these posts can be seen as an disinhibition effect (Suler 2004). Identity has shown to be a useful factor when analyzing an internet-forum. A conclusion from analyzing identity shows that behaviours are encouraged when the fear of being exposed is averted. Overall the result shows that the foundation of the virtual community on Flashback is the information that is shared between users.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The evolution of injection processes toward more fuel efficient and less polluting combustion systems tend to make them more prone to critical events such as Thermo-Acoustic Instabilities, Blow-Off and Flash-Back. Moreover, the addition of Di-Hydrogen as a secondary or as the main fuel is in discussion by aeronautical engines manufacturers. It drastically modifies the stability of the system and thus raise several interrogations concerning the multiplicity of its use. Being able to predict critical phenomena becomes a necessity in order to efficiently operate a system without having to pre-test every configuration and without sacrificing the safety of the user. Based on Deep Learning techniques and more specifically Speech Recognition, the following study presents the steps to develop a tool able to successfully detect and translate precursors of instability of an aeronautical grade swirled injector confined in a tubular combustion chamber. The promising results obtained lead to proposals for future transpositions to real-size systems.
