Abstract:
This book traces the construction of migrant space in Israel’s urban periphery with a focus on the flat that Filipino care workers co-rent for their day-off and provides insight into the migrant lives and journeys in trans-local contexts. The author selects the flat not only as the central field site for fieldwork but also as an analytical lens for grasping the various social networks and the formation of new identities. Offering a repertoire of migrants’ own narratives, she shows how the flat, as a microcosm of societal constellations of networks, provides opportunities for all sorts of new e

Abstract:
This book investigates high-Reynolds number flows, and analyses flows that can be described in the framework of Prandtl’s 1904 classical boundary-layer theory, including Blasius’s boundary layer on a flat plate, Falkner–Skan solutions for the boundary layer on a wedge surface, and other applications of Prandtl’s theory. It then discusses separated flows, and considers the so-called ‘self-induced separation’ in supersonic flow, and which led to the ‘triple-deck model’. It also presents Sychev’s 1972 theory of the boundary-layer separation in an incompressible fluid flow past a circular cylinder

Abstract:
Chapter 3 focuses on the high-Reynolds number flow of an incompressible fluid near the trailing edge of a flat plate. It begins with Goldstein’s (1930) solution for a viscous wake behind the plate, and shows that the displacement effect of the wake produces a singular pressure gradient near the trailing edge. It further shows that this singularity leads to a formation triple-deck viscous-inviscid interaction region that occupies a small vicinity of the trailing edge. A detailed analysis of the flow in each tier of the triple-deck structure is conducted based on the asymptotic analysis of the N

Abstract:
This chapter draws on social psychological models of impression formation to show how Pride and Prejudice enables readers to acquire uncommonly durable mental models of its characters. This makes it possible to explain why Jane Austen’s readers have sometimes claimed that even flat characters devoid of psychological complexity can seem as lifelike and familiar as actual friends. The chapter also presents a new way to account for another distinctive feature of Austen’s reception history, which is the tendency for fans of Austen’s novels to display a possessive desire for friendship with the aut

Abstract:
This is Part 3 of a book series on fluid dynamics. This is designed to give a comprehensive and coherent description of fluid dynamics, starting with chapters on classical theory suitable for an introductory undergraduate lecture courses, and then progressing through more advanced material up to the level of modern research in the field. This book is devoted to high-Reynolds number flows. It begins by analysing the flows that can be described in the framework of Prandtl’s 1904 classical boundary-layer theory. These analyses include the Blasius boundary layer on a flat plate, the Falkner-Skan s

‘Geopolitics and objects’ explores the role and significance of objects in geopolitics. Geopolitical imaginations and practices are embedded and emboldened by their relationship to a vast array of things ranging from the flag, the pipeline, the map, the gun, waste, and even toys such as action men dolls. The pipeline as an object has been enormously productive of global energy geopolitics, but also indigenous geopolitics. Maps play an important role in the making of geopolitics, which exceeds their practical value in terms of locating places and helping users navigate more generally. Flags are

Abstract:
This chapter reviews Fodor’s contribution to the epic Chomsky-Piaget Royaumont debate. The issue that was under discussion was a familiar one, namely, what psychological processes underlie concept learning. Piaget thought concept learning involved the formation and confirmation of hypotheses that a learner generates through the construction and organization of stimuli gathered from the environment, and modifying them when they proved to be inconsistent. However, Fodor pointed out a fundamental flaw in this theory: it is silent about the origin of the concepts used in generating the hypotheses.

This chapter addresses the problem of dealing with a ruptured, ligated or transected ureter, or a ureteric defect caused accidentally or intentionally by surgery. Ureteric strictures may occur as a result of tuberculosis or schistosomiasis. Tuberculous strictures may occur at either end of the ureter; schistosomal strictures occur primarily in the distal ureter. Ureteric stones are another cause of stricture formation and these tend to occur at the common sites of impaction of a stone; therefore, particularly just above the pelvic brim and just outside the bladder.
