Ghariani, Samia. "Experimental study of wind induced suction on flat roofs." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/7540.

Full text
Abstract:
A 1:10 scale model building previously tested in the NRCC 9$m \times 9m$ wind tunnel was reproduced with a more exaggerated scale of 1:100 in a smaller wind tunnel and tested. Also tested was a half of the building cut along the line of symmetry and with various heights. The purpose of the testing was (1) to examine the repeatability of the roof pressure patterns with a more exaggerated scaling factors, and (2) to explore the feasibility of using a portion of the building for the testing of structural details against wind action. It was confirmed that the proposed simulation of only a half or even less portion of the building at various scaling factors can be a useful wind tunnel testing method which can reproduce the previously established full building test results as long as the parapet height ratio is kept constant and the wind tunnel blockage ratio is kept minimal.

Contarini, Antonio. "Flat roofs renovation: a life cycle approach for environmental impact assessment and economic effectiveness." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2012. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/3313/.

Full text
Abstract:
The high energy consumption caused by the building sector and the continuous growth and ageing of the existing housing stock show the importance of housing renovation to improve the quality of the environment. This research compares the environmental performance of flat roof systems (insulation, roofing membrane and covering layer) using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The aim is to give indications on how to improve the environmental performance of housing. This research uses a reference building located in the Netherlands and considers environmental impacts related to materials, energy consumption for heating and maintenance activities. It indicates impact scores for each material taking into account interconnections between the layers and between the different parts of the life cycle. It compares the environmental and economic performances of PV panels and of different materials and thermal resistance values for the insulation. These comparisons show that PV panels are convenient from an environmental and economic point of view. The same is true for the insulation layer, especially for materials as PIR (polyisocyanurate) and EPS (expanded polystyrene). It shows that energy consumption for heating causes a larger share of impact scores than production of the materials and maintenance activities. The insulation also causes larger impact scores comparing to roofing membrane and covering layer. The results show which materials are preferable for flat roof renovation and what causes the largest shares of impact. This gives indication to the roofers and to other stakeholders about how to reduce the environmental impact of the existing housing stock.

Elseragy, Ahmed A. B. "Architectural and solar potential of curved and flat roofs in hot arid regions (with reference to Egypt)." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2004. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12383/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the effect of, various vaulted and domed roof geometries on their solar behaviour under given summer and winter conditions. Roof is the building-envelope element that is most exposed to the sun as it receives a high amount of solar radiation, which is the main cause of summer overheating in hot-arid climates. In addition, to other climatic and physical factors, indoor thermal comfort in hot-arid climates is also influenced by the intensity of solar radiation received by roof surfaces. Therefore, roof form and geometry should be designed with careful consideration to insolation parameters. Domed, vaulted, and curved roofs have been used for a long time in hot-arid regions for historical, cultural, climatic, and structural reasons. The review of previous research work showed that different explanations have been given to the climatic effects of their forms and the environmental behaviour of their enclosed spaces. The research explores the previous attempts that discussed the relevant principles of solar radiation and solar geometry on horizontal and tilted surfaces with different orientations. The previous work that applied these principles and theories to evaluate the solar behaviour of architectural elements with arbitrary forms was also investigated. In order to evaluate the solar performance of flat and curved roofs geometrical configurations, a parametric study testing the received solar radiation intensity (W/m2) on flat, vaulted, and domed roofs with different span-to-height ratios and orientations was carried out using a published solar computer model. The results of this model were followed by validation tests using other two commercially available computer tools to carry out a brief solar and thermal analysis of selected curved-roof geometries. The evaluated curved-roofs solar performance and main findings of the present research have been compared with recently published independent research. It is believed that this research establishes a sound theoretical basis for the validity of various claims of the climatic advantages of different curved-roof forms in hot-arid regions. As part of this research outcome, solar and architectural design-guidelines for curved-roofs are introduced. The research concludes with a discussion of the architectural and solar potential of curved-roof forms, which is believed to be novel contribution to the knowledge and the understanding of curved-roofs solar behaviour and architectural applications in hot-arid climates.

Dayani, Nima. "Numerical and Experimental Investigations for Wind Uplift Force on Flat Roofing System." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/34265.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of the construction industry brought the new methods of structural design, which have been introduced to engineers, although overall this phenomenon has increased building costs. A cost-effective construction is one of the major decision points during the definition of any engineering project, therefore, due to the opposing concepts of these two statements, revising design standards and codes are essential in order to provide adequate and cost-effective design requirements. A single-ply roof system is a relatively new method of roof construction that has been used in the building industry in recent decades, which seems to have undergone dramatic changes due to significant structural failures that have occurred through the years. Wind-induced damage on flat roofs is a common problem for low-rise buildings and much of this damage is initiated when the steel deck roof fails, leading to the overall roofing system collapse. The FM (Factory Mutual) design recommendations, which is a standard that recommends allowable dimensions and wind rating for the roofing products, have provided tabulated steel deck span dimensions and fasteners distance for many years. To update the FM design recommendations extensive experimental and analytical investigations are required. In the current study an experimental program was conducted at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) on flat roofing systems, for simulating the wind uplift effect on several roofing systems samples, as recommended by FM design recommendations. A Finite Element Model (FEM) of the same roofing systems as those used in the experimental cases was developed and different loading patterns were analysed for providing a better simulation of the deflection, moments and forces responses, as measured during the experiments. The FEM was validated with the experimental results and was further employed for applying the FE analysis for more steel deck span dimensions and wind rating cases, as provided in the FM design recommendations tables. These results were reported to the Single Ply Roof Industry (SPRI) Committee where the updating of the FM design tables is currently under discussion.

Charlesworth, Peter S. "A full-scale and model study of convective heat transfer from roof mounted flat-plate solar collectors." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1986. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5993/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is concerned with the convective heat transfer, due to the action of the wind, from the upper surface of roof mounted flat plate solar collectors. The ability to predict the quantity of heat transferred from a collector, in this manner, is necessary in order to facilitate the evaluation of the overall efficiency of a collector panel. Previous methods of determining this convection coefficient have generally relied upon extrapolations of small scale wind tunnel results to full-scale values. The validity of these methods is questionable, and it was found that there was a lack of full-scale data relating to the convection coefficient from the upper surface of a flat-plate collector. It was also found that no systematic attempt to relate model results to full scale values had been made. Full-scale experiments have been performed to evaluate the convective heat transfer coefficient, h, from the upper surface of a roof mounted flat plate. The convection coefficient was found to be dependent upon the wind speed as measured above the roof ridge line, V 6R, and to some extent upon the direction of the prevailing wind, G. Relationships between h and V 6R are presented, as are relationships between h and VH (the wind speed measured at the mid-panel height) and h and V 10 (the meteorological 10m wind speed). Small scale wind tunnel experiments were also performed. This was in order to assess the potential of using wind tunnel model results to predict accurately full-scale convective heat losses. These experiments showed some qualitative agreement with the full-scale tests. However, extrapolation of these model results to full-scale values rendered heat transfer coefficients in excess of those found in the full-scale work. Therefore the use of previously derived full-scale results from wind tunnel studies must be treated with caution. It is suggested that the full-scale results, presented here, represent a more satisfactory means of evaluating the convective heat transfer from the upper surface of roof mounted flat plate solar collectors.

Abstract:
Flat roofs have been common for many decades. They were first build in dry and mountainous areas, then they were spread in the entire world. Today flat roofs are present in all type of buildings. In Sweden they are mostly used in larger houses like shopping malls, industrial buildings and apartment blocks. Flat roofs are very exposed for the elements and since the roof is flat water can easily be stationary. The water will then start drain through slots and the construction will be destroyed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate flat roof construction of today in consideration to leakage and moisture problems. Are today's constructions any good? Are today´s building materials the ones that should be used in tomorrow's constructions? Focus has also been made to evaluate new possible solutions for the construction were prefabricated elements is one.The most leaks can be found were bushings has been made that don’t follow the acquis available. The quality of the construction is good, but there are other circumstances that creates the problems. It’s of great importance to keep water away from the construction under the production time. One way to do that is by making a weather protection. Because of the high cost it is not very common.Prefabricated roof elements have a lot of advantages. Since they are built in controlled indoor conditions building moisture is not a problem. When the roof elements come to the construction site they are already finished and the assembling will go fast and the house will be densely directly. There are some aspects that need further investigations such as transportation of the roof elements.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the study of the new development of the current development area of the town of Kroměříž in its northeastern part behind the psychiatric hospital between the streets Lutopecká and Havlíčková. This territory connects the local part of Terezov and Barbořina. The aim of the study was to propose new housing for more than 1,200 inhabitants in a currently unbuilt area in accordance with a valid territorial plan. The solved territory is divided into three stages of construction. The northeastern part follows the existing housing development with two-storey apartment buildings. In the rest of the area there are designed individual houses and partly terraced houses. The area is complemented by a kindergarten, shops and a parking house. In accordance with the territorial plan there is also a park and a sports ground with a playground and a sports hall. The character of the territory is greatly influenced by some already existing engineering networks and their protection zones, the transfer of which is economically disadvantageous. Due to the marginal position of the solved territory, the study proposes the extension of the service by public transportation by another two places. The new transport link between streets Lutopecká and Havlíčková would cause a significant traffic movement to increase over the area, so the study envisages a calm traffic in the form of a maximum speed limitation of 30 km/h and the communication system consists of two-way and one-way communications. Transportation is provided by the garages belonging to family houses supported with parking along the roads. In the apartment part, parking is possible in the outdoor parking lots and to supplement the necessary capacity, the study also proposes a parking house.

Abstract:
The company Rio Deserto is currently mining the famous Barro Branco coal seam in the state of Santa Catarina located in the south of Brazil. One of their coal mines, #101, is experiencing problems related to the pillars in one panel. The coal seam is slightly inclined and several pillars have developed damages on the down-slope side with focus in the top corner. Damage inspections revealed a thin clay layer located between the coal pillar and the overlying siltstone. The clay layer is believed to affect the pillar strength and possibly be a source for the observed damages. Aim of this report has been to evaluate different theories behind the damages, focusing on the clay interface using numerical modelling with FLAC. Using convergence data, a calibration of the model is initially done before evaluating the combination of different interface and coal strength while observing the pillar. In addition is an evaluation of influence from structures such as cleats/joints. The results clearly show that with a small shear displacement (1-4 mm) the pillar damages are almost symmetrical on the up-slope and down-slope side of the pillar. Structures can influence and contribute to non-symmetrical pillar damages although not perfectly matching the field observations. Furthermore, the results show that a forced shear movement (8-25 mm) best reproduce the observed damages. A shear movement along the interface is therefore believed to be source mechanism behind the pillar damages. The forced shearing can potentially be explained by factors not considered in the model such as horizontal stresses, disturbances by mining and presence of water within the clay.

Cuskey, Lusie. "Roots in the Earth and a Flag in my Hand: Rural Gender Identity in American Musical Theatre." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/20431.

Full text
Abstract:
The integrated musical is a vehicle for the creation and communication of a national identity, created through the use of coded performances of gender and, at times, rural settings conceptualized as essentially “American.” There is, however, little research about the ways in which gender operates in rural settings in musical theatre, or the ways in which rural gender identities are utilized to communicate nationalist ideologies. This thesis seeks to address this gap in research by examining three contemporary American musicals – Carrie, Violet, and The Spitfire Grill – in light of both American musical theatre conventions surrounding gender performance and contemporary theory around gender, rurality, and intersectional rural gender identities. This thesis ultimately suggests that an approach to rural gender in musical theatre grounded in a specific physical and cultural moment and location is best equipped to both honor the narratives of rural communities and propagate appropriately complex narratives of national identity.

Luo, JunLu. "A New Rock Bolt Design Criterion and Knowlwdge-based Expert System for Stratified Roof." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28512.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its development in the 1920s, bolting has become the most dominant support method in underground construction. However, because of the geological environment, the design process for roof bolt systems is an art rather than a science. To quantify the selection of bolting systems a MSBT (minimum solid beam thickness) approach was developed. The ultimate goal of this bolt design paradigm was achieved by optimizing bolt length, bolt density, and bolt pretension during installation. The impact of the number of strata layers within bolting range and pretension applied to bolts upon the stability of an opening was investigated using FLAC model. Four statistical models for predicting optimum bolt supports using a minimum solid beam thickness were established, and based on these results, a design criterion was proposed. To meet support needs in various geological and geotechnical settings, a variety of bolt types have been developed. The installation of such bolt-based support systems is often complex and specialized, and thus imposes a challenge for engineers to identify the specific cause and to take appropriate remedial measures once problems arise. To solve these problems, a knowledge-based expert system (KBES) has been developed. The knowledge base includes the data accumulated from years of laboratory and field investigations conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the US Department of Labor. A user-friendly Windows-based program was implemented using KAPPA environment. After identifying the problem, the KBES searches its knowledge base and reasons out the most likely, secondary, and other potential causes, then provides solutions according to users' input. The results of this research are validated and demonstrated using case studies.
