Abstract:
In general, people prefer to view themselves positively. But some individuals are more prone to self-flattery than others, that is, holding an unjustifiably high opinion of oneself. Applying regulatory mode theory, we identify motivational factors that predict which individuals are and are not prone to self-flattery. In four studies, using both chronic (Studies 1-3) and experimental (Study 4) conditions, we found that those with high locomotion concerns about effecting change (control) are more inclined to flatter themselves, whereas those with high assessment concerns about making the right c

Abstract:
It is well known that explicit user ratings in recommender systems are biased toward high ratings and that users differ significantly in their usage of the rating scale. Implementers usually compensate for these issues through rating normalization or the inclusion of a user bias term in factorization models. However, these methods adjust only for the central tendency of users’ distributions. In this work, we demonstrate that a lack of flatness in rating distributions is negatively correlated with recommendation performance. We propose a rating transformation model that compensates for skew in

This thesis discusses the relationship between mockumentaries and the music industry. Because this subject has yet to be studied in depth, the original contribution to knowledge is to further examine this relationship. To do so, a literature review documenting what has thus far been written about mockumentaries is provided. This audiovisual strategy is also contextualized within contemporary practices. In the next section, the music industry is discussed in broad terms. Firstly, the relationship between cinema and music is addressed. Then, music is depicted as a cultural phenomenon, with r

Previous research indicates that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty imitating the behaviour of others. Within the area of object-directed imitation, the presence or absence of a clear goal or outcome may facilitate or hinder imitative ability.
