Abstract:

Abstract:
Flakes and instant groats products have become increasingly prolific in recent decades among groats products. The interest of consumers in this type of groats and groats products is primarily connected to their ability to be quickly prepared and good food and flavoring properties compared with traditional groats. Due to their balanced amino acid composition, the presence of mucous substances unique vitamin content, most of groats can be attributed to the products of dietary and restorative nutrition. In the given article the existing technologies of hulled oats grain processing into groats products were analyzed. Thepossibilities of using new breeding varieties of oats to improve existing technologies were analyzed. Advantages using nakedoat varieties for the production of groats and flakes were considered. It was found that the technologically expedient moisture content of pearled naked oats groats before steaming is 17-17.5 %. After steaming groats with this moisture yield of flaked groat estimated to range between 84,3-93,6 %. For substantiation of modes of preparing pearled groats to flaking determining of its impact on physical properties of the flaked groats were conducted. Flaked products obtained from naked oats characterized by high uniformity, however by fractional composition are smaller compared with control samples. The main their percentage (about 60-70%), obtained by overflow of sieves  3,0 mm and  1,5 mm. Thickness of obtained in the studied modes flaked products is in the range 0,4-1,1 mm. Flaked products obtained from naked oats by steaming oats groats with moisture content 19.1 % by indicator of thickness characterized as flaked groats for which the characteristic thickness is 0.7 to 0.9 mm. Mode of steaming groats at vapor pressure of 0.15 MPa with moisture content 17.5 % allows producing flaked products which correspond by the value of thickness of the control of classical oat flakes 0,4-0,9 mm. Decreasing moisture content of groats before steaming to 15.4 % allows producing thin flakes, values of thickness of which in the range of 0.4-0.7 mm. Except thickness, strength of flakes also depends on mass fraction of moisture. For flakes with higher humidity inherent strength is greater compared to a product with low humidity. The final moisture of oat flakes is normalized by regulations and must not exceed 12.0%.Waterheat treatment of pearled groats with further its flaking reduces the proportion of ashes of flaked products from 1.8 to 1.5%.

Abstract:
This study was aimed at establishing the variation in physico-chemical properties between and within different jackfruit varieties. Mature jackfruits from trees known to produce orange, yellow and white flakes were harvested and ripened at 28oC and 90% relative humidity. The weight, length and circumference of ripe fruits were measured. The fruits were cut into three equal sections: top, middle and bottom. Each section was separated into flakes, rind, abortive perigones, consolidated perigones, seeds and core. The percent weight of different fruit parts, and flake physico-chemical characteristics were determined. The average weight, length, circumference and maturation period for jackfruit varieties studied were 12 kg, 47 cm, 76 cm and 104 days, respectively. The mean proportions of flakes, rind, abortive perigones, consolidated perigones, seeds and core were 24.7, 20.0, 14.5 14.3, 13.1 and 11.3%, respectively. Ascorbic acid (AA), carotenoids, total soluble solids (TSS), TSS: acid ratio, color and texture varied significantly among jackfruit sections. Color did not vary among sections of yellow and white flaked varieties. Flake texture (hardness) was 12.1, 10.5 and 6.6 N/mm for the white, yellow and orange flaked varieties, respectively. Flake textural resilience was in the order: white > yellow > orange flakes. Principle component analysis showed white flakes correlated positively with flake resilience, hardness and color lightness. Orange flakes were associated with high carotenoids and TSS content. Yellow flakes exhibited intermediate properties between those of white and orange flakes. Jackfruit flake color and section can be used as flake quality predictor.

Abstract:
Abstract. Gas flares are a regionally and globally significant source of atmospheric pollutants. They can be detected by satellite remote sensing. We calculate the global flared gas volume and black carbon emissions in 2017 by applying (1) a previously developed hot spot detection and characterisation algorithm to all observations of the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) instrument on board the Copernicus satellite Sentinel-3A and (2) newly developed filters for identifying gas flares and corrections for calculating both flared gas volumes (billion cubic metres, BCM) and black carbon (BC) emissions (g). The filter to discriminate gas flares from other hot spots uses the observed hot spot characteristics in terms of temperature and persistence. A regression function is used to correct for the variability of detection opportunities. A total of 6232 flaring sites are identified worldwide. The best estimates of the annual flared gas volume and the BC emissions are 129 BCM with a confidence interval of [35, 419 BCM] and 73 Gg with a confidence interval of [20, 239 Gg], respectively. Comparison of our activity (i.e. BCM) results with those of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Nightfire data set and SWIR-based calculations show general agreement but distinct differences in several details. The calculation of black carbon emissions using our gas flaring data set with a newly developed dynamic assignment of emission factors lie in the range of recently published black carbon inventories, albeit towards the lower end. The data presented here can therefore be used e.g. in atmospheric dispersion simulations. The advantage of using our algorithm with Sentinel-3 data lies in the previously demonstrated ability to detect and quantify small flares, the long-term data availability from the Copernicus programme, and the increased detection opportunity of global gas flare monitoring when used in conjunction with the VIIRS instruments. The flaring activity and related black carbon emissions are available as “GFlaringS3” on the Emissions of atmospheric Compounds and Compilation of Ancillary Data (ECCAD) website (https://doi.org/10.25326/19, Caseiro and Kaiser, 2019).

Abstract:
Based on a simple model of lithic procurement, reduction, and use, we generate predictions for patterns in source diversity and average distance-to-source measurements for flaked stone assemblages left behind by small-scale and residentially mobile populations. We apply this model to geochemical data from obsidian artifacts from three regions in western North America. As predicted, results show markedly different patterns in the geochemical composition of small flakes, large flakes, and formal tools. While small flakes and tools tend to have greater source diversity and are on average farther from their original source, the large flake assemblage is composed of fewer and closer sources. These results suggest that a failure to include very late stage reduction (e.g., pressure flakes) and microdebitage in characterization studies may bias interpretations about the extent of residential mobility and/or trade patterns because more distant sources will be underrepresented.

Abstract:
Breakfast cereal plays an important role in a balanced diet. In Malaysia, tons of highly nutritious banana peels, overripe, oversupplied and rejected bananas end up in food waste, as a result of high production and consumption of banana. Thus, this study aimed to produce flaked breakfast cereal with banana pulp, banana peel and cornmeal through oven -baking. Baking temperature, baking time and volume of banana pulp and peel mixture were optimized by using response surface methodology (RSM) to achieve desired fracturability and yellowness. Through this study, fracturability (R2 = 0.98, P≤0.05) and yellowness (R2 = 0.99, P≤0.05) were found to be significantly related to the processing parameters and formulation of the flakes. The optimum processing parameters and formula obtained from this study were the baking temperature of 129.5°C, baking time of 15 mins and volume of banana pulp and peel mixture of 140 g. Besides, a sensory evaluation was conducted and compared among the optimized flakes and commercial corn flakes. Based on the results, there was a significant difference (P≤0.05) in aroma, appearance and taste but no significant difference (P>0.05) in mouthfeel and overall acceptability between both types of flakes. It was recommended that the shelf-life study of the optimized flakes could be done for future study.

Boundary layer transition was measured in zero, favorable, and adverse pressure gradients at Mach 8 using heat transfer. Models consisted of 7° half angle forecones 0.4826 m long, followed by flared or ogive aft bodies 0.5334 m long. The flares and ogives produced constant pressure gradients. For the cases examined, favorable pressure gradients delay transition and adverse pressure gradients promote transition, but transition zone lengths are shorter in favorable pressure gradient. Results of the effect of adverse pressure gradient on transition zone lengths were inconclusive.

ABSTRACT We report the earliest detection of the 19.967-GHz [transition 21–30E (t = 0)] methanol maser associated with the massive star-forming region G358.93–0.03. The flare was detectable from 2019 January 23 to March 5, for only 44 d. It turned out to be the most powerful 19.967-GHz maser in the Galaxy in the entire history of observations, taking into account the 104-Jy flux from it on the Earth’s surface and the distance to the source, 6.75 kpc. The 19.967-GHz maser flared contemporaneously with the first of two flares detected in associated 20.971-GHz methanol masers. We estimated that the ratio of flux densities between these two transitions is F20.971/F19.967 = 14 ± 4, increasing to >520 in the second flare. We discuss the differences between the two flares in the 20.971-GHz methanol masers and the consequence thereof.

Abstract:
Antigua has substantially more preceramic sites than any other island in the Lesser Antilles. Archaic peoples made extensive use of the high-quality flint that is common on Antigua to produce industries dominated by unretouched flakes and blades. Analysis of the largest excavated Archaic assemblage from the island reveals that flaked-stone technology centered around the production of direct-percussion blades, and that the majority of other flake classes are by-products of blade production. The assemblage's five major morphological classes of blades appear to represent successive stages of core reduction.

Abstract:
Over the past four decades the interpretive capacity of lithic analysis in Mesoamerica has changed dramatically. Lithic studies have grown from simple artifact descriptions to a powerful approach for studying and interpreting pre-Hispanic economy. The linchpin for this change was the development of the lithic technology approach (Collins 1975; Crabtree 1968; Flenniken 1981) and its use in asking culturally meaningful questions about the Mesoamerican past (Sheets 1975; Spence 1967). The utility of this approach is as obvious to those who employ it, as it is elusive to those who do not. It involves the recovery, analysis and interpretation of flaked stone residues, that is, the large and small flakes and chips produced when stone tools are manufactured and used. Moreover, it is the study of the mundane to view the mundane, and obtain a window onto the economic patterns of everyday life. The reward from studying thousands of ordinary flaked stone remains comes from the insight it provides for reconstructing and modeling past economic behavior.

Abstract:
It is now generally accepted that there are no human societies which are truly egalitarian; this also true of bonobos and chimpanzees, among whom rank is inherited. If it were true of the common ancestor of Homo and Pan, there would have been (inherited) social inequality throughout our hominin ancestry. The problem is how to find it. It is also accepted that artefacts play an active and important role in our social lives; thus, socially defined differences may be reflected among the very simplest of artefacts. A case study of flaked stone from southwestern Egypt, dating to about 7000–8000 years ago, suggests that social differences can, indeed, be identified within very simple artefacts — in this case, plain, unmodified stone flakes. Using unmodified stone flakes, I explore the possibility of identifying not merely social difference but, specifically, inherited social difference in the Upper Palaeolithic of Europe and among early African hominins more than 2,000,000 years ago.

Abstract:
The parameters that control nuclear size and shape are poorly understood. In yeast, unregulated membrane proliferation, caused by deletion of the phospholipid biosynthesis inhibitor SPO7, leads to a single nuclear envelope “flare” that protrudes into the cytoplasm. This flare is always associated with the asymmetrically localized nucleolus, which suggests that the site of membrane expansion is spatially confined by an unknown mechanism. Here we show that in spo7Δ cells, mutations in vesicle-trafficking genes lead to multiple flares around the entire nucleus. These mutations also alter the distribution of small nucleolar RNA–associated nucleolar proteins independently of their effect on nuclear shape. Both single- and multi-flared nuclei have increased nuclear envelope surface area, yet they maintain the same nuclear/cell volume ratio as wild-type cells. These data suggest that, upon membrane expansion, the spatial confinement of the single nuclear flare is dependent on vesicle trafficking. Moreover, flares may facilitate maintenance of a constant nuclear/cell volume ratio in the face of altered membrane proliferation.

Abstract:
Objective.Rates of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) remain high for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who are at risk of flaring after surgery. We aimed to describe rates, characteristics, and risk factors of RA flare within 6 weeks of THA and TKA.Methods.Patients with RA were recruited prior to elective THA and TKA surgery and prospectively followed. Clinicians evaluated RA clinical characteristics 0–2 weeks before and 6 weeks after surgery. Patients answered questions regarding disease activity including self-reported joint counts and flare status weekly for 6 weeks. Per standard of care, biologics were stopped before surgery, while glucocorticoids and methotrexate (MTX) were typically continued. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify baseline characteristics associated with postsurgical RA flares.Results.Of 120 patients, the mean age was 62 years and the median RA duration 14.8 years. Ninety-eight (82%) met 2010/1987 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism criteria, 53 (44%) underwent THA (and the rest TKA), and 61 (51%) were taking biologics. By 6 weeks, 75 (63%) had flared. At baseline, flarers had significantly higher disease activity (as measured by the 28-joint Disease Activity Score), erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and pain. Numerically more flarers used biologics, but stopping biologics did not predict flares, and continuing MTX was not protective. A higher baseline disease activity predicted flaring by 6 weeks (OR 2.12, p = 0.02).Conclusion.Flares are frequent in patients with RA undergoing arthroplasty. Higher baseline disease activity significantly increases the risk. Although more patients stopping biologics flared, this did not independently predict flaring. The effect of early postsurgery flares requires further study.

Abstract:
Background:In rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in low disease activity, flares are associated with symptom deterioration. Patients in clinical remission may flare but still have low disease activity. How does this affect patient reported outcomes? Objectives:To evaluate the prevalence of disease flares in patients treated to target drug free remission, and to study the impact of disease flares on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) for flares with different impact on disease activity. Methods:In the IMPROVED study 610 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or undifferentiated arthritis (UA) were treated to target drug free remission (DAS <1.6) for 5 years. As soon as DAS was <1.6, treatment was tapered to discontinuation. Patients with at least 8 months follow-up were selected. A flare was defined according to three definitions; A) DAS ≥1.6 and ≥0.6 increase from the previous visit regardless of the previous DAS; B) minor flare from remission; a DAS ≥1.6 with <0.6 increase and previous DAS <1.6; C) major flare from remission; a DAS ≥1.6 with ≥0.6 increase and previous DAS <1.6. Linear mixed models were used to compare functional ability, measured by the health assessment questionnaire (HAQ), at visits where a flare occurred versus visits without a flare. Fisher’s exact test were used to compare percentages with ≥0.22 HAQ increases between groups with and without LDA at the moment of flare. A generalized linear mixed model was used to calculate the odds ratio for a deterioration of ≥20 mm in VAS of PROs global health (GH), disease activity, pain and morning stiffness (from the preceding visit) during a flare. Results:Of the 585 patients with sufficient follow-up, 75% experienced a flare A, 26% a flare B, and 68% a flare C, at least once. Most flares were observed after t=8 and t=12 months. In 55%, 100%, and 69% of visits with a flare A, B or C, the patients were still in LDA (DAS=<2.4). In 55% of the visits where a flare was associated with a DAS increase ≥0.6 (flare A & C) there was also clinically relevant increase in HAQ of ≥0.22. The mean difference in HAQ was 0.27 with flare A (p<0.01), 0.03 with flare B (p=0.72) and 0.18 with flare C (p<0.01). If was DAS >2.4 (LDA) at the moment of flare, HAQ increased ≥0.22 in 68% of all flares A, and 77% of all flares C (p-values <0.01, compared to flares where patients were still in LDA, DAS=<2.4). The odds ratios of a >20 mm deterioration in VAS global health, VAS disease activity, VAS pain and VAS morning stiffness was significant ≥1 for flares with a ≥0.6 increase in DAS (flares A and C), and ≤1 for minor flares (B) (table 1).Conclusion:In early arthritis patients, during 5 years treated to target drug free DAS-remission, disease flares with loss of DAS-remission were common. Although the majority of patients who flared were still in LDA, most reported more pain, morning stiffness, increased disease activity and a diminished global health. On average, deterioration in HAQ only exceeded the minimum clinically important difference (delta HAQ >=0.22) in case of a ≥0.6 increase in DAS, independent of the previous DAS. Depending on the definition of flare, up to 45% of patients lost DAS LDA, and in this group the functional deterioration significantly more often exceeded the MCID as compared to the patients that flared but were still in LDA. More research is needed to find out which patients are most at risk for clinically relevant flares, and to evaluate the impact of flares in patients with remission on long term outcomes.Table 1.Odds Ratios and 95% confidence intervals for > 20 mm increase in PROs on 100mm visual analogue scalesFlare AFlare B (minor)Flare C (major)Prevalence ≥20 mmaOR(95% CI)Prevalence ≥20 mmaOR(95% CI)Prevalence ≥20 mmaOR(95% CI)Global health62%2.1 (1.5; 2.8)45%0.5 (0.4; 0.7)62%1.4 (1.1; 1.8)Disease activity62%2.5 (1.7; 3.8)45%0.4 (0.3; 0.6)62%2.1 (1.4; 3.0)Pain87%2.0 (1.3; 3.1)78%0.5 (0.3; 0.8)87%1.8 (1.2; 2.5)Morning stiffness84%1.7 (1.1; 2.6)77%0.6 (0.4; 0.9)86%2.1 (1.5; 2.9)a The prevalence of >20 mm deterioration in VAS PRO’s during a visit with a flare.Acknowledgements:We would like to thank all patients for their contribution as well as the rheumatologists who participated in the IMPROVED-study group. Abstract:
Background: Despite substantial research on early hominin lithic technologies, the learning mechanisms underlying flake manufacture and use are contested. To draw phylogenetic inferences on the potential cognitive processes underlying the acquisition of both of these abilities in early hominins, we investigated if and how one of our closest living relatives, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), could learn to make and use flakes. Methods: Across several experimental conditions, we tested unenculturated, naïve chimpanzees from two independent populations (n=11) for their abilities to spontaneously make and use their own flakes as well as to use pre-made flakes made by a human experimenter. Results: Despite the fact that the chimpanzees demonstrated an understanding of the requirements of the task and that subjects were sufficiently motivated and had ample opportunities to develop these behaviours, none of the chimpanzees tested, made or used flakes in any of the experimental conditions. Conclusions: These results differ from all previous ape flaking experiments, which found flake manufacture and use in bonobos and one orangutan. However, these earlier studies tested human-enculturated apes and provided the test subjects with flake making and using demonstrations. The contrast between these earlier positive findings and our negative findings (despite using a much larger sample size) suggests that human enculturation and/or human demonstrations may be necessary for chimpanzees to acquire these abilities. The data obtained in this study are consistent with the hypothesis that flake manufacture and use might have evolved in the hominin lineage after the split between Homo and Pan 7 million years ago, a scenario further supported by the initial lack of flaked stone tools in the archaeological record after this split. We discuss possible evolutionary scenarios for flake manufacture and use in both non-hominin and hominin lineages.

Abstract:
Background:The effect of flares on healthcare resource usage and patient-reported outcome scores in SLE patients is not well quantified. Objectives:To understand how flares impact healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and patient-reported outcomes amongst an international real-world dataset of SLE patients. Methods:The Adelphi Real World 2015 Lupus Disease Specific Programme (DSP) is a cross-sectional study of 263 rheumatologists in the US and EU5. Rheumatologists were asked to complete patient record forms (PRFs) for the next 5 prospectively consulting SLE patients; the same patients were asked to complete patient self-completion (PSC) forms describing how SLE affected them. PRFs collected data pertaining to the patient’s diagnosis, disease history, current clinical outcomes, treatment and management history. PSCs collected similar data and included patient-reported outcome measures (PROs) to assess humanistic burden. Propensity score matching was used to assess differences in HCRU and health status between SLE patients who had flared (physician defined) in the last 12 months and those who had not. Matching variables were patient ethnicity, time since diagnosis, and severity at diagnosis. Data were extracted from 1278 PRFs, and 591 PSCs. Propensity score matching was carried out on two matched groups of 408 patients. Results:Demographic data are reported in Table 1. Propensity score matching showed patients who flared in the last 12 months experienced significantly greater hospitalizations, visits to the ER, and total HCP consults in the last 12 months. Significantly greater drug burden lower physician and patient satisfaction, lower EQ-5D score (worse health status), lower FACIT Fatigue score (greater fatigue), and greater overall work impairment (Table 2) were also observed.Table 1.Demographic dataVariableFlared in last 12 monthsNot flared in the last 12 monthsMean age (years)41.842.4% Female86.087.0% White/Caucasian66.276.3Mean years diagnosed5.95.4Table 2.Propensity score matching resultsOutcome variableFlared meanNot flared meanCoefficient95% CIp-valueHospitalisations in last 12 months24.267.630.17[0.12 – 0.21]<0.001Emergency department visits in last 12 months20.834.190.17[0.12 – 0.21]<0.001Number of tests in last 12 months46.4938.907.59[3.74 – 11.44]<0.001Number of current medications2.762.190.57[0.43 – 0.72]<0.001Physician satisfied64.4686.63-0.22[-0.28 – -0.17]<0.001Patient satisfied69.2985.09-0.16[-0.24 – -0.08]<0.001EQ-5D-3L0.720.83-0.11[-0.15 – -0.07]<0.001FACIT Fatigue30.0636.48-6.42[-8.5 – -4.3]<0.001WPAI overall percentage work impairment42.7430.2312.5[7.51 – 17.50]<0.001Conclusion:The analysis of international real-world data confirmed that SLE patients who flared in the last year represent a greater burden on healthcare resource and demonstrate significantly worse health status, greater fatigue, lower patient and physician satisfaction and greater overall work impairment compared with non-flaring patients. Abstract:
Abstract Objective UCTD is a systemic autoimmune condition that fails to fulfil the criteria for a definite CTD. Given that there are a lack of studies on links between pregnancy and UCTD, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of disease flares or development of CTD in addition to the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in patients with UCTD. Methods This is a retrospective study using prospectively collected data for 100 pregnancies in 81 incidences of UCTD treated in a single referral centre. Results A total of 11 pregnancies (11%) ended in miscarriage in the first trimester and the remaining 89 (89%) ended with a live birth. Thirteen patients (13%) flared during pregnancy or puerperium and three (3%) suffered major flares that led to the development of SLE with renal involvement. Obstetric complications occurred in 26 of the 89 successful pregnancies (29%), including 1 case (1%) of pre-eclampsia; in some cases, a single pregnancy was affected by more than one complication. There was a significant link between disease flare and both anti-dsDNA-positive antibodies at baseline (P < 0.01) and disease activity at the beginning of pregnancy (P < 0.01). Conclusion The impact on pregnancy in the study’s cohort appears to be less serious in UCTD than in other CTDs. Nevertheless, disease flares and obstetric complications can represent a clinical challenge and clinical and serological disease activity would appear to represent important determinants of pregnancy outcomes. Pre-pregnancy counselling and planning as well as close monitoring during pregnancy is therefore essential.

Abstract:
The demand for native grasses is increasing in restoration and agriculture, though their use is often limited due to seed handling challenges. The external structures surrounding the grass seed (i.e., the floret) possess hairs, awns, and appendages which create blockages in conventional seeding equipment. Flash flaming is a patented technology which allows precision exposure of floret material to flames to singe off hairs and appendages. We used two grasses native to Mediterranean ecosystems of Western Australia (Amphipogon turbinatus R.Br. and Neurachne alopecuoidea R.Br.) to evaluate the effects of different flaming techniques on flow properties and germination. Flaming significantly improved flowability in both species and had both neutral (A. turbinatus) and negative (N. alopecuroidea) effects on germination. Flaming torch size influenced germination, though flaming temperature (low or high) and whether this was kept constant or alternating had no effect. The best evaluation of germination following flaming was achieved by cleaning flamed florets to seed and/or germinating in the presence of karrikinolide (KAR1) or gibberellic acid (GA3). We suggest that flaming settings (particularly torch size) require species-specific evaluation and optimisation. Removing seeds from flamed florets and germination testing this material in the presence of stimulants may be a useful protocol for future flaming evaluations.

ObjectiveTo confirm that metformin prevents flares in patients with SLE with low disease activity, we performed a post hoc analysis combining our previous two randomised trials.MethodsPost hoc analyses were performed on data from the open-labelled proof-of-concept trial (n=113, ChiCTR-TRC-12002419) and placebo-controlled ‘Met Lupus’ trial (n=140, NCT02741960) comparing the efficacy of metformin versus placebo/nil add-on to standard therapy in patients with SLE with low disease activity (SELENA-SLEDAI ≤4). The primary endpoint was defined by the SELENA-SLEDAI Flare Index at 12-month follow-up. A subgroup analysis was performed.ResultsOverall, 201 eligible patients were included, with 99 allocated to metformin group and 102 allocated to the placebo/nil group. By 12 months of follow-up, 21 patients (21.2%) flared in the metformin group, as compared with 36 (35.3%) in the placebo/nil group (p=0.027, risk ratio=0.68, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.96). Subgroup analysis showed that patients with negative anti-dsDNA antibody and normal complement at baseline, and a disease duration <5 years with concomitant use of hydroxychloroquine had a better response to metformin.ConclusionPost hoc pooled analyses suggested that metformin reduced subsequent disease flares in patients with SLE with low disease activity, especially for serologically quiescent patients.

Abstract:
Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) is a process for converting natural gas into synthetic oil, which can be further processed into fuels and other hydrocarbon-based products. The total GTL plant is self-sufficient. Therefore most of the required utilities provided, too. High energy cost is the main driving force behind currently increasing interest in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) for the conversion of GTL. The catalytic synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 Syngas mixtures leads to a large variety of products such as paraffins, olefins, alcohols, and aldehydes. The process uses mainly natural gas. However, other gases fuels could also be employed. Three-fourths of Iraq's natural gas resources are associated with oil. Meanwhile, Majnoon oil production is generating significant amounts of associated gas that was usually flared while different options to abate flaring are under review. The current article presents using a 10 MM m3 annually associated gases in the southern part of Iraq in 3000 BPD GTL plant. The simulation of the plant shows that the added associated gas which is currently flared could increase the productivity and there is no need to send it to the flares. Research Institute of Petroleum Industry has a license of the GTL process, both fixed-bed and slurry types.

Abstract:
It is proved the high effectiveness of using naked oats varieties Salomon and Samuel and hull-less barley variety Achilles as raw material for production new groats products with high biological value. Researched modes of pearling, water heat treatment and its impact on yield of pearled and flaked groats. The technological scheme of processing hull less barley and naked oats for producing groats, flakes, mixtures of groats and flakes were developed. Technology includes grain cleaning stage, grain water heat treatment, pearling, sorting of pearling products, pearled groat water heat treatment, mixing, flaking, drying, and control of end products. Studied hull-less barley characterized by high protein content 14,615,8 % and β-glucans – 6,8-7,4 %, has same to conventional dehulled grain mass fraction of lipids 2,1-3,8 % and starch – 57,6-60,5 %, low ash content 2,3-2,7%. Naked oats grain traditionally characterized by high mass fraction of lipids – 6,0-6,3 %,high mass fraction of protein - 14,9-15,4% and βglucans - 6,4-6,9% close to conventional dehulled grain mass fraction of starch – 59,3-61,6 % and ash – 2,1-2,3 %. It was found that the technologically expedient moisture content of hull-less barley and naked oats before pearling is 12-13 %. In the pearling the grain with this humidity depending on the duration of pearling yield of groat estimated to range between 6796 %. Increasing moisture content of grain before pearling to 14.0% does not significantly change the limits of yield values, and pearling grain with low moisture content of 10.5% leads to excessive grinding and formation of a significant amount of by-products and waste in the form of fine particles and husking bran.Technologically expedient moisture content of naked oats pearled groat before steaming stage are 15 % and the vapor pressure in steamer of 0.10 MPa. For the pearled barley groat most appropriate moisture content of before steaming is 20 % and the vapor pressure in steamer of 0.10 MPa.Steaming in this mode allows to obtain flaked groats with yield at 84 to 93%

Abstract:
Abstract Background For years, the gold standard for Ulcerative Colitis (UC) remission was mucosal appearance during endoscopy. However, recent literature suggests histological or “deep” remission is important for preventing flares and maintaining clinical remission. There are now validated histological scoring systems to identify subclinical inflammation, the simplest being the Nancy Histology Index (NHI). Colonoscopy with histological evaluation is the gold standard for UC monitoring, but frequent endoscopy is not always possible. Literature reporting the utility of fecal calprotectin (FC) in detecting subclinical inflammation is limited. We seek to evaluate the correlation of FC and C-reactive protein (CRP) with NHI scores to better assess their role in detecting subclinical UC. Methods We retrospectively evaluated clinical data and pathology slides of 69 UC patients that were collected over 6-months period at university of Kentucky. Pathology slides were scored according to NHI by a trained researcher and verified by an IBD pathologist. Presence of acute activity was defined as NHI>2. Mayo endoscopic scores (MES) were based on endoscopic reports from one expert endoscopist. Endoscopic remission was defined as MES <2. FC and CRP were recorded if collected within a month of endoscopy. FC was defined as elevated (≥120 mcg/g) or borderline (50.1–120 mcg/g). Elevated CRP was defined as (> 0.9 mg/dl). Results 33 of the 69 (47.8%) patients analyzed were in endoscopic remission. 17 of those 33 (51.5%) patients in endoscopic remission had acute histological activity (NHI >2). 7 (21.2%) patients with acute histological activity completed FC testing. Of the 7 who submitted FC, 4 were elevated, and 1 was borderline. 15 of the 17 NHI positive patients submitted CRP, 4 (26%) were elevated. Finally, among the 17 patients with NHI >2, four patients flared within a year (Table 1). In these 4 flared patients, FC was abnormal in 3 patients. CRP was negative in these three patients. One patient did not complete a FC or CRP. Conversely, of the 16 patients with quiescent UC and NHI <2 only 1 patient flared within a year. FC and CRP were not completed at the time of endoscopy. Conclusion We successfully identified an important subset of UC patients in clinical and endoscopic remission with active histological activity. Most patients in this subset had elevated fecal calprotectin levels. This suggests fecal calprotectin can be used for disease monitoring to proactively identify subclinical activity before disease flare. Our findings suggest that biopsies should be performed in all UC patients even in the absence of endoscopic abnormality, and fecal calprotectin should be ordered at regular intervals to pre-emptively detect and prevent UC flares.

Abstract:
There exists a wide energy supply/demand gap in Nigeria. The local generation of electricity meets only 31% of the demand of 10000 MW. By contrast, only 39.6% of the total installed capacity for electricity generation is achieved, owing to aging infrastructure, etc. The energy demand/supply pattern and infrastructure critically reviewed thus suggested the need to increase the electricity generation capacity. Furthermore, Nigeria flares 77% of her associated natural gas. Apart from the environmental penalties that flaring represents, in monetary terms, over the 110 years' life of Nigeria's gas reserves, a conservative estimate of the cost of the gas so-flared was $330 billion (based on $20/barrel average price of crude). It was safely inferred that the way forward in meeting the country's energy demand should include a strong element of gas utilization. In previous publications by this group, it was established that while domestic cooking could reduce the flared gas by about 5.4%, a cohesive policy on associated gas use for electricity generation could eliminate gas flaring. For domestic utilization of the associated gas, burner design and safety concerns were identified as the key challenges to overcome. The paper reports the effectiveness of odorizers in leakage detection/ prevention by the local consumers. It also discusses the issue of prevention of gas explosions. The previous cases of gas accidents were reviewed. The safety approaches proffered in the paper identified the relevant areas of research for safe delivery and consumption of natural gas in Nigeria.
