Abstract:
The former common knowledge that cartilage lesions do not heal has been modified over the last few years due to new technologies. For repair of deeper circumscribed lesions osteochondral press-fit grafting and tissue engineering are used in clinical application. The histological data of the hyaline-like tissue obtained by engineering are just as satisfactory as the surviving grafted hyaline cartilage on top of osteochondral cylinders. But comparative studies are still lacking. To fill the gap and with a view to repairing larger osteoarthritic defects we have performed an in vivo study on 16 goats. Three months after the creation of a full thickness wide cartilage defect on the femoral condyle with harvesting of cartilage samples for tissue cultures we performed secondary cartilage repair procedures on the installed osteoarthritis areas: 1) grafting with autogenic osteochondral press-fit cylinders from the opposite knee, 2) autologous engineered chondrocyte grafting under periosteal flaps, 3) both in combination. The harvesting defects were either left as controls or filled with a hyaluronate fleece. After eight months the repaired areas and the harvesting defects were examined for cartilage stiffness as a novel comparative parameter. Compared to normal the cartilage on top of osteochondral grafts is considerably stiffer. Engineered cartilage is weaker than normal. Spontaneously ingrown fibrous cartilage is much weaker even with a carrier fleece. A combination of osteochondral press-fit grafts with engineered autologous cells restores biomechanical qualities to repaired larger degenerative cartilage defects.

Abstract:
While addressing grey fabric quality in a renowned circular weft knitting mill of Bangladesh, the authors experienced some questionable approach practiced by knitters. The subjective nature of defect detection by knitters/inspectors often time causes wrong emphasizing on frequently occurring defect(s) instead of focusing on influential defect(s) and subsequently, employing wrong quality control approach to minimize the grey fabric defects. Knit fabric defects (e.g., hole, stain, press-off, gout, miss knit, barrè, tucking, etc.) should be assessed by type, fault coverage, gravity and the frequency of occurrence instead of focusing only on frequency of occurrence in the fabric. In this study, grey weft-knitted fabric quality is investigated based on influential defects instead of frequently occurring defects. Quality data of single jersey, fleece and 1X1 rib were gathered and analyzed from an established knitting factory in Bangladesh over three months duration. A fabric inspection machine and 4-point inspection method were employed in this study. Gout was found as the most frequently occurring defect for each fabric type but not influential for rib fabric. For a significant amount of knitted fabrics, totaling of 55,524.91 m2 inspected fabric, the most occurring defects were ranked as gout, press-off, hole, miss knit, stain, and tucking and influential defects (based on inspection points) were ranked as gout, press-off, hole, stain, miss knit, and tucking (highest to lowest). In the inspection report, the knitter/inspector mistakenly categorized gout as the most occurring as well as the most influential defect for 1X1 rib fabrics and suggested remedies accordingly.

Abstract:
Purpose. The article studies the history of the magazine “Zolotoe runo” (“Golden Fleece”) that has been publishing in Moscow from 1906 till 1909. It was a project of the young art lover, millionaire N. P. Ryabushinsky, who decided to continue the mission of “miriskusniki” (members of the “World of Art” movement) and promote the aesthetic principles of symbolism, which he saw as the most promising style of art at the beginning of the 20th century.Results. Based on the analysis of the memoirs written by contemporaries, correspondence between the representatives of the Russian cultural elite, publications in the periodical press, as well as outcomes of modern research, the author argues that the magazine “Zolotoe runo”, providing its pages to outstanding writers and publishing works of iconic artists and articles about their works, became one of the most influential periodicals about art in Russia.Conclusion. This research shows that, having said a new word in art and journalism, the magazine “Zolotoe runo” became a worthy reflection of the artistic life of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.

Abstract:
Two instrumented presses are described in which eleven different types of wool, including coarse and fine fleeces and offsorts, were compressed to their minimum total volumes using a heat, press, out-of-press cool sequence. The final volume was the actual volume of all components with air excluded. Extrusion of grease and dirt during pressing resulted in higher yield products of lower weight and in-press densities over 1300 kg/m3. Frictional forces and transverse/in-line pressure ratios were deduced from side- and end-pressure measurements at 90°C and at 20°C for each of the two stages of biaxial pressing of these wools at final pressures of 3.1, 7.8, and 12.6 MPa. Densities of the compressed wools were monitored over a nine month storage period unrestrained under ambient conditions, and remained close to 1000 kg/m3 for those produced at the higher pressures.

Abstract:
AbstractBy any measure, 1998 was a year of conflicting domestic and international interests regarding Russia's Northern Sea Route (NSR). The European Union sponsored an international demonstration project using a Finnish tanker during an April and May voyage to the Kara Sea. Russian icebreakers escorted the tanker, which carried a cargo of gas condensate from the Ob estuary to Europe. The International NSR Programme (INSROP) continued during a fifth year of interdisciplinary research concentrating on the integration of previous results and NSR voyage simulations. Lukoil and Gazprom forged ahead with building their own tanker fleets, while advertisements appeared in the Russian press protesting the use of foreign carriers in the Russian Arctic. In November Lukoil-affiliate companies acquired more than 50% interest in Murmansk Shipping Company, making Lukoil owner of 13% of the Russian merchant marine. Difficult escort operations through heavy ice were conducted late in the year so that Pevek would be supplied with adequate fuel to survive the coming winter.

Abstract:
Abstract In long-lived raptors, research suggests that some nest areas consistently fledge more young than others, with the majority of young in the population being produced by a few females. If this claim were true for Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) populations, it would benefit land managers to identify high-quality goshawk breeding habitat. We examined whether the number of young fledged varied spatially among Northern Goshawk nest areas within three study areas where long-term reproductive data from goshawks were available: (1) Vancouver Island, British Columbia; (2) Jemez Mountains, New Mexico; and (3) Uinta Mountains, Utah. A mixed-model ANOVA indicated there was minimal spatial variation in nest productivity among nest areas within the three study locations. Rather, nest areas exhibited high temporal variability in nest productivity within each study area. These results suggest that temporal patterns such as local weather and fluctuating prey populations influenced Northern Goshawk reproduction more than spatial patterns such as habitat characteristics. Nest productivity may inadequately reflect spatial patterns in goshawk reproduction and so it would be premature to assume that habitat quality for Northern Goshawks was equal among nest areas within these study areas. Future research should examine spatial variability among nest areas in adult and juvenile survival rates to gain a complete picture of population responses to habitat change.

Abstract:
This book forum focuses on Wim Klooster’s The Dutch Moment: War, Trade, and Settlement in the Seventeenth-Century Atlantic World (Cornell University Press, 2016). In his book, Wim Klooster shows how the Dutch built and eventually lost an Atlantic empire that stretched from the homeland in the United Provinces to the Hudson River and from Brazil and the Caribbean to the African Gold Coast. The fleets and armies that fought for the Dutch in the decades-long war against Spain included numerous foreigners, largely drawn from countries in northwestern Europe. Likewise, many settlers of Dutch colonies were born in other parts of Europe or the New World. According to Klooster, the Dutch would not have been able to achieve military victories without the native alliances they carefully cultivated. Indeed, Klooster concludes, the Dutch Atlantic was quintessentially interimperial, multinational, and multiracial. At the same time, it was an empire entirely designed to benefit the United Provinces. The four reviewers – Trevor Burnard, Joyce Goodfriend, Cynthia Van Zandt, and Willem Frijhoff – all offer praise, some more profusely than others. Their reviews critically question some aspects of Klooster’s narrative, particularly in relation to slavery, the inevitability of the Dutch Atlantic empire’s decline, his assessment of the rule of Johan-Maurits van Nassau-Siegen in Dutch Brazil, the role of violence and of women in Dutch colonization, as well as the relationship between microcosmic and macrocosmic perspectives on the history of Dutch America.

Abstract:
An experimental study has been conducted on the penetration of silicone rubbers and human skin in vivo by sharp-tipped and flat-bottomed cylindrical punches. A penetrometer was developed to measure the penetration of human skin in vivo, while a conventional screw-driven testing machine was used to penetrate the silicone rubbers. The experiments reveal that the penetration mechanism of a soft solid depends upon the punch tip geometry: a sharp tipped punch penetrates by the formation and wedging open of a mode I planar crack, while a flat-bottomed punch penetrates by the growth of a mode II ring crack. The planar crack advances with the punch, and friction along the flanks of the punch leads to a rising load versus displacement response. In contrast, the flat-bottomed punch penetrates by jerky crack advance and the load on the punch is unsteady. The average penetration pressure on the shank cross section of a flat-bottomed punch exceeds that for a sharp-tipped punch of the same diameter. In addition, the penetration pressure decreases as the diameter of the sharp-tipped punch increases. These findings are in broad agreement with the predictions of Shergold and Fleck [Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A (in press)] who proposed models for the penetration of a soft solid by a sharp-tipped and flat-bottomed punch.

Abstract:
Purpose Content analysis of cancer-related direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA), with a focus on how benefit and risk/adverse effect information is presented, is essential to understanding its potential impact on oncology outcomes. Methods We reviewed all oncology DTCA appearing in three patient-focused cancer magazines and a sample of selected popular magazines from January 2003 to June 2006. We determined the Flesch reading ease score (FRES) for the text in each advertisement (a score ≥ 65 is readable for the average person). We also assessed the proportion, type size, and placement of benefits and risks/adverse effects, as well as the nature and content of advertising appeals. Results Of 284 advertisements identified, 49 were unique. Oncology-related DTCA was rare in the popular magazines, and appeared mostly in those aimed at female readership. About equal amounts of text were devoted to benefits and risks/adverse effects, and all text was difficult to read. The mean FRES for benefit text was 39.71; for risk/adverse effect text, it was 38.22, a difference of 1.49 (95% CI, −4.02 to 7.00). The largest font size for benefits was 4.60 mm on average; for risks/adverse effects, it was 2.38 mm, a difference of 2.22 mm (95% CI, 1.35 to 3.09). Appeals to medication effectiveness were frequent (95%) and often made with clinical trial data (61%). Conclusion Oncology print DTCA is prevalent in cancer-related, patient-directed magazines, and infrequent in the popular press. The information presented is considerably difficult to read, raising important questions about the appropriateness of direct-to-consumer marketing for oncologic medications.

Osóbka Krzysztof, Historia autyzmu: od baśni i legend po badania genetyczne – laboratorium budowy mitów w nauce [History of Autism: from Fairy Tales and Legends Through Genetic Research – a Laboratory of Building Scientific Myths]. Studia Edukacyjne nr 56, 2020, Poznań 2020, pp. 339-367. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 1233-6688. DOI: 10.14746/se.2020.56.19Autism is one of the most mysterious human disorders ever known. Although existent from the dawn of humanity, it was only in 1943 that science took up this subject. Before, undiscovered and unnamed, it was considered merely a legend, and the only existing records were those of few pioneer case studies. The discoveries of Leo Kanner, the first person to properly define autism, marked the onset of a struggle to describe the disorder using scientific jargon. Unfortunately, the trials were not always successful. Autism, as described by contemporary science, is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Theories claiming its psychogenic etiology can no longer be sustained. The history of research concerning autism points to a phenomenon known as collective thinking, a term coined by Ludwik Fleck, as well as to the process of the emergence of a scientific myth. It is a study of how researchers’ presuppositions can shape social beliefs and at the same time how constructing scientific theories is inherently ingrained in the cognitive style of an era. The second half of the 20th century marks the beginning of a gradual change in the classification of autism. The perception of the nature of this disorder shifted from psychogenic theories to organic etiologies. It was the voice of the enormously talented and creative individuals with high-functioning autism, a voice rejected until the 1980s, that triggered a breakthrough in relevant research.

Abstract:
Aims/Objectives/BackgroundPatient Reported Experience & Outcome Measures (PREMs/PROMs) are not yet well established in emergency care. This study aimed to determine priorities for older adults attending the ED, to inform item inclusion for a new PREM/PROM.Methods/DesignOne hundred thirty-five priority statements, linked to suggested PREM/PROM items, were derived from the literature, patient interviews (n=24) and staff focus groups (n=7)(October 2018- April 2019). All statements had a Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score >70. A one-day consensus meeting was held, December 2019.Invitations were issued via social media, patient/public involvement groups and charities. Following focus groups to assess interpretability, nominal group technique was used to prioritise statements. Individuals scored statements from 1(least important) to 9(most important). Statements with a median score of >6.5 were ‘critically important’, 3.5 to 6 ‘important, not critical’, and <3 ‘less important’. Inter-rater agreement was assessed using mean absolute deviation from the median (MADM). ‘Critically important’ or ‘less important’ statements with MADM <50% were automatically included or excluded, respectively. Statements deemed ‘important, not critical’, or with MADM >50% underwent further voting.Remaining statements underwent dichotomous voting. A >70% favourable majority was required for inclusion.Results/ConclusionsTwenty-nine participants attended. Average age was 65.6 years (R32—78). Experiences of emergency care were as a patient (n=16(55.2%)), accompanying person (n=11(37.9%)), third-sector representative (n=14(48.2%)) and/or clinician (n=7(27.6%)).Initial prioritisation yielded 71 statements for inclusion. Further voting led to the inclusion of another 31 statements (102 total).Statements relating to care delivery, communication and emotional needs ranked as more important overall. Statements related to waiting were considered less important (seesupplementary file).Participants reported having ‘adequate say’ during the meeting (76.9% Strongly Agree).ConclusionThis meeting established priorities for older adults attending the ED. The low priority assigned to waiting confounds some previous findings. Further item reduction is planned to create a final PREM/PROM for older adults.

Abstract:
Background Isotretinoin, for treating cystic acne, increases the risk of miscarriage and fetal abnormalities when taken during pregnancy. The Health Canada–approved product monograph for isotretinoin includes pregnancy prevention guidelines. A recent study by the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES) on the occurrence of pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes during isotretinoin therapy estimated poor adherence to these guidelines. Media uptake of this study was unknown; awareness of this uptake could help improve drug safety communication. Objective The aim of this study was to understand how the media present pharmacoepidemiological research using the CNODES isotretinoin study as a case study. Methods Google News was searched (April 25-May 6, 2016), using a predefined set of terms, for mention of the CNODES study. In total, 26 articles and 3 CNODES publications (original article, press release, and podcast) were identified. The article texts were cleaned (eg, advertisements and links removed), and the podcast was transcribed. A dictionary of 1295 unique words was created using natural language processing (NLP) techniques (term frequency-inverse document frequency, Porter stemming, and stop-word filtering) to identify common words and phrases. Similarity between the articles and reference publications was calculated using Euclidian distance; articles were grouped using hierarchical agglomerative clustering. Nine readability scales were applied to measure text readability based on factors such as number of words, difficult words, syllables, sentence counts, and other textual metrics. Results The top 5 dictionary words were pregnancy (250 appearances), isotretinoin (220), study (209), drug (201), and women (185). Three distinct clusters were identified: Clusters 2 (5 articles) and 3 (4 articles) were from health-related websites and media, respectively; Cluster 1 (18 articles) contained largely media sources; 2 articles fell outside these clusters. Use of the term isotretinoin versus Accutane (a brand name of isotretinoin), discussion of pregnancy complications, and assignment of responsibility for guideline adherence varied between clusters. For example, the term pregnanc appeared most often in Clusters 1 (14.6 average times per article) and 2 (11.4) and relatively infrequently in Cluster 3 (1.8). Average readability for all articles was high (eg, Flesch-Kincaid, 13; Gunning Fog, 15; SMOG Index, 10; Coleman Liau Index, 15; Linsear Write Index, 13; and Text Standard, 13). Readability increased from Cluster 2 (Gunning Fog of 16.9) to 3 (12.2). It varied between clusters (average 13th-15th grade) but exceeded the recommended health information reading level (grade 6th to 8th), overall. Conclusions Media interpretation of the CNODES study varied, with differences in synonym usage and areas of focus. All articles were written above the recommended health information reading level. Analyzing media using NLP techniques can help determine drug safety communication effectiveness. This project is important for understanding how drug safety studies are taken up and redistributed in the media.

Abstract:
Citrus is a rapidly expanding fruit crop in Panama with a planted area of approximately 14,000 ha, with the crop destined for both table and juice industries for local and foreign markets. Chiriqui Province in extreme western Panama borders Costa Rica and grows 4,300 ha of citrus that consists primarily of Valencia and navel oranges with the remainder grown throughout other provinces. Some plants in commercial groves in Potrerillos and Boquete in Chiriqui Province were found with leaf (chlorotic spots or rings), stem (necrosis), and fruit (localized ringlike or depressed lesions) symptoms similar to those caused by Citrus leprosis virus (CiLV) (3). In Potrerillos, wood samples about 3 years old were identified in two of the citrus groves, indicating that the infection was established on or before 1996. The mite Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) was collected in all leprosis-infected or suspected groves in both Potrerillos and Boquete. CiLV is known to be transmitted by B. obovatus Donnadieu and B. phoenicis in Argentina and Brazil, respectively (3). To confirm the presence of this virus, 20 samples (12 from Boquete [B] and 8 from Potrerillos [P]) of leaf and fruit lesions were fixed in a modified Karnovsky solution and sent to Brazil for electron microscopic examination of thin sections. In 8 samples (2 from B and 6 from P) cytopathic effects were found characterized by a dense viroplasm in the cytoplasm and short, bacilliform particles (50 to 60 × 100 to 110 nm) in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum, features similar to those reported by Colariccio et al. (1). In 6 samples (5 from B, and 1 from P), the cytopathic effects were similar to those observed in Orchid fleck virus (OFV)-infected cells (2), with an intranuclear, electron lucent viroplasm and short, rodlike particles (40 to 50 nm × 100 nm) either within the nucleus or in the cytoplasm, as also previously reported for a sample of CiLV in Brazil (4). The symptomatology, presence of the mite vector, characteristic cytopathic effects, and presence of virions are considered to be evidence that CiLV is present within a 100 km2 area of Potrerillos and 25 km2 of Boquete in Chiriqui Province. This is the first report of the presence of CiLV in Central America, suggesting that the virus has spread northward from South America. References: (1) A. Colariccio et al. Fitopatol. Abstract:
English Abstract: What role can non-diplomats play in managing and altering power relations in transboundary river basins? We answer this by investigating the lobbying efforts of indigenous peoples to stop the construction of the planned Orokawe (Baynes) dam on the Kunene River. The Kunene River forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia with several concluded treaties in place. These treaties set the context of bilateral state diplomacy concerning the allocation and management of a transboundary water resource. The theoretical foundation of our investigation are ideational power conceptualizations and practice theory. We discuss the employment of ideational power in transboundary rivers with numerous practices, such as lobbying and transnational network development. This article argues that actors consciously practice power during transboundary water diplomacy.

Dolezal, W., K. Tiwari, R. Kemerait, J. Kichler, P. Sapp, and J. Pataky. "An Unusual Occurrence of Southern Rust, Caused by Rpp9-virulent Puccinia polysora, on Corn in Southwestern Georgia." Plant Disease 93, no. 6 (June 2009): 676. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/pdis-93-6-0676a.

Full text
Abstract:
Southern rust, caused by Puccinia polysora Underw., occurs frequently on corn (Zea mays) grown in subtropical or tropical regions. When conditions are favorable, southern rust also occurs in temperate climates of the central and southern United States although the fungus does not survive on corn crop residue and must be introduced to temperate regions each growing season. Several single, dominant, resistance genes, designated as Rpp genes, convey hypersensitive, chlorotic fleck reactions when challenged with avirulent isolates of P. polysora (1). Rpp resistance prevents or limits the formation of uredinia. The Rpp9 gene has been used successfully in North America in the past 20 years to control southern rust even though the gene has been ineffective in other parts of the world (e.g., Africa and Hawaii) because of the prevalence of virulent races. During the past 3 years, Rpp9 virulence has occurred in the western hemisphere (e.g., Brazil, Mexico, Nebraska, and Texas), but prior to 2008, uredinia were not observed east of the Mississippi River on corn with the Rpp9 gene. A few uredinia were observed on corn with the Rpp9 gene in eastern Nebraska in 2006 and near Victoria, TX in 2007 (W. Dolezal, personal observation). In July of 2008, a virulent isolate of P. polysora was confirmed from Grady County, GA on corn lines with the Rpp9 gene including the original source of this resistance gene, Boesman yellow flint, which is PI 186208 (3). In August of 2008, isolates of P. polysora were collected from severely infected corn hybrids with Rpp9 grown in Macon County, GA. Rust samples from hybrids without Rpp genes also were collected in Burke County, GA where Rpp-resistant corn was asymptomatic. In greenhouse trials, corn lines with and without the Rpp9 gene were inoculated with urediniospores from collections from Burke and Macon counties and Illinois. Rust infection types (1) were scored 18 to 25 days after inoculation. The Macon County isolate produced type 1 and 2 infections (small uredinia surrounded by necrotic or chlorotic tissue) on Oh43Rpp9 and W64aRpp9 and type 4 infections (large, sporulating uredinia) on two versions of a commercial hybrid with and without the Rpp9 gene and on Va59 (which carries an Rpp gene different from Rpp9). The Burke County isolate and an isolate from Illinois collected in 2001 produced type 0 infections (chlorotic flecks) on all of these lines except the non-Rpp version of the commercial hybrid which had a type 4 reaction. To our knowledge, Rpp9-virulent isolates of P. polysora have not been reported from the continental United States for nearly 50 years. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, A. L. Robert (2) collected isolates of P. polysora from throughout the world and observed multiple races on a set of host differentials that is no longer available. A. L. Robert's collection included an isolate from Georgia that was virulent on PI 186208. Commercial hybrids containing the Rpp9 gene may continue to be resistant throughout most of North America if previously common Rpp9-avirulent isolates of P. polysora are prevalent, but those hybrids should be carefully monitored for infection by newly introduced Rpp9-virulent isolates.
