Lock, L. E. "Flemish sculpture art and manufacture c. 1600-1750." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1444314/.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to shed light on the creative and production processes in a field that has recently been termed "the greatest unknown story in the history of Western European art" (Jeffrey Muller, 2006). In the context of 17th-century Antwerpen solely being appreciated for three great painters (Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens) and its sculpture always being "explained" as copying Bernini's and Algardi's Italian models, it is not surprising that this field has been neglected. In fact, its study has been minimal since World War II. And until then documentary identification and attribution were the only preoccupations of its historians. For the purposes of the thesis, Flemish sculpture will roughly be taken as that produced in the former Southern Netherlands, at first under Spanish, then under Austrian dominion (excluding independent Liege), and investigated in the time from Rubens's return to Antwerpen in 1608 to the end of its heyday by the middle of the eighteenth century. Thus within this huge field, of which an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 sculptures and sculptors' drawings have survived, the present study takes a different methodological approach. Using well-documented cases and especially those cases for which three or more different stages in the design and production are extant (preparatory drawing, preparatory terracotta model and the work as executed in wood or marble), it analyses in a necessarily empirical and exemplary way the workings of the sculpture production: the commissioning process the project from the drawn sketch to the finished model the manufacture from the raw materials to the delivery. To a certain extent, this thesis uses the methodology of the seminal study by Jennifer Montagu, Roman Baroque Sculpture, The Industry of Art (1989). However, around this skeleton, certain complementary situations are also investigated, in particular the effects of collaborations between sculptors and an architect, a painter, a painter-architect or a cabinet maker. The study concludes with a discussion of the social standing of Low Countries sculptors and their trade between art and manufacture.

Splunder, Frank Van. "English as a medium of instruction in Flemish higher education." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.556668.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the internationalization of European higher education, English has been gaining importance as a medium of instruction. This tendency may also be observed in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Yet, the Flemish government severely restricts the use of languages other than Dutch for teaching purposes. This monolingual policy contrasts sharply with the multilingual reality in Flanders, and has its roots in history. Belgium was constructed in 1830 as a French-speaking state, even though French was spoken by a minority. The Flemish majority and their language were effectively oppressed, and it was not until 1930 that Dutch was recognized as the language of higher education in Flanders. Language remains a sensitive issue in Belgium, and Flanders in particular has established close links between its language and identity. Alongside this essentialist attitude, a strong normative tradition may be observed, which may be linked to linguistic insecurity. As a result of the 'language struggle', language is commonly framed in terms of threat (from 'foreign' languages) and protection (of one's own language and culture). Yet, whereas in the past French was imposed from above, today's English is more readily accepted from below. The aim of my research was to analyse the policy and discourse on English-medium instruction (EMI) in a highly language-sensitive context. I analysed bottom-up (semi-public) discourse as well as top-down discourse (government and university policy), focusing on academic practices (EMI attitudes expressed by Flemish students and lecturers). I used a plurality of ('critical') methods, drawing on language policy research, discourse analysis, .~nd language attitudes research. I made use of texts (in their widest sense), questionnaires and interviews. The results reveal a dichotomy between political and academic discourse on EMI. Whereas the former is clearly ideological, the latter tends to be more pragmatic. Flemish students and lecturers in general express positive attitudes towards EMI, although they think some kind of regulation is necessary. Their attitudes are determined by a number of interrelated parameters, including age, experience, need, language command, and ideology. A culture shift has taken place in Flemish academia, in that English has replaced French as a second language, and it has arguably become the first academic language instead of Dutch (even though its use as a medium of instruction remains restricted). Many students and lecturers regard language in general - including foreign languages - as part of their identity, rather than (standard) Dutch only. The current language policy regarding EMI appears to be counterproductive, and may not be tenable in a globalizing academic environment.

L'Estrange, Elizabeth. "En/gendering representations of childbirth in fifteenth-century Franco-Flemish devotional manuscripts." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/290/.

Full text
Abstract:
Representationso f childbirth in fifteenth-century devotional and historical manuscripts are invariably depicted as postpartum confinement scenes in a domestic interior. These images appear to show a `gendered space' in which women care for each other and men are marginalized. Neglected by medieval art historians, such pictures have been uncritically used by historians of obstetric and social history to prove that childbirth was the one time when medieval women exercised power and control in an otherwise patriarchal society. However, as with all historical evidence, these images do not offer us unmediated access to the past. This thesis brings these domestic postpartum pictures of childbirth to the centre of an art historical enquiry by undertaking a survey of this iconography in some fifty fifteenth-century manuscripts and incunables. Since the occurrence of this generic iconography cannot be consistently associated with female spectators, it has been necessary to reassess in what way they might be en/gendered: how they were received by their original viewers (male and female) and how we can bring them into meaning as sources for reconstructing the lives of medieval women. To avoid equating these images with reality and reducing the female sex at large to the maternal function, I develop a methodology to show how the social viewing positions occupied by certain spectators would have rendered them sensitive to images of maternity and childbirth. Specifically, I argue that the images of childbirth in a group of fifteenth-century Books of Hours made for male and female members of the houses of Anjou and Brittany would have been seen with a `situational eye' that was informed by the requirements of patriarchal, aristocratic families, and by the dangers surrounding childbirth. My thesis demonstrates that this situational eye can be extended beyond the field of art history to show how other sources from fifteenth-century childbearing such as charms, lying-in, and churching, can be brought into meaning for the women whose social position required them to conceive and give birth to male heirs.

Abstract:
The energy consumption of the building sector accounts for 40% of the global use, most ofwhich are employed for Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning, together with WaterHeating. In 2016, the European residential sector represented 25.4% of the final energyconsumption with households using up to 80% of it to meet the heating demands. Suchconsumption calls for energy efficiency and increased use of renewable energy sources. In addition, thermal storage grants an increased integration of renewable energy sourcescombined with the potential of demand-side management. In the push towards near zeroemission buildings, the most promising configuration is all electrical with the provisionof energy with a residential PV. Therefore, this thesis focuses on a control strategy fora residential installation with a heat pump and PV.Economic model predictive control (EMPC) has been determined as a favorable controlstrategy to handle such systems. EMPC allows for many different things, includingconstraint handling and optimal performance in spite of conflicting objectives. The thesisis developed in collaboration with the Belgian start-up ThermoVault, which provideselectric energy services for space and water heaters. After successfully accomplishing theprovision of local services, such as energy efficiency or self-consumption, the intention isto combine the local objectives with an additional external incentive, e.g. provision ofancillary services or time-of-use.Firstly, the thesis aims to provide a regional context of demand response, heat pumpand PV to understand their role in the near future. Moreover, the thesis proceeds tosearch for this second external economic incentive to yield greater economic profits.Upon finding the additional incentive, a control strategy that fits the requirements isproposed accordingly. Finally, a case study representative of a Flemish household isintroduced and the performance of the control strategy is assessed in comparison to asimple ruled-base control. The assessment is performed over three different weeks of theyear, representing the three seasons with heating demands (autumn, winter and spring)in order to extrapolate the results for a whole year. After it, two possible future scenariosare studied: 1) the introduction of a feed-in tariff, instead of the current net-meteringscheme and, 2) the possibility to access real-time pricing at a residential level.

"Planning Strategies for Generational Succession in Flemish Third-Generation Family-Owned Businesses." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3762.

Full text
Abstract:
Survival over generations is critical for family-owned businesses (FOBs). Only 3% of family firms survive the 3rd generation, and a succession strategy is the most challenging decision for family business leaders to make. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore nonfinancial succession planning strategies that 3rd-generation FOB leaders in Flanders, Belgium, apply for the transition of ownership and leadership to the 4th generation. The conceptual framework for this study was the socioemotional wealth paradigm. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, archival document reviews, company internal and public documents, and press releases. Yin's 5-step data analysis was applied to identify themes and patterns. Analysis of the data revealed that, among these 3rd-generation FOBs, the socioemotional aspect of generational succession planning required strategies that simultaneously focused on successor suitability and well-being, consensus of the family, mode of transition, leadership and governance, and survival of the family firm. These findings may provide other, similar FOB leaders with insights into the dynamics of a successful transition of the 3rd-generation family firm to the next generation. Findings may be used to increase FOB survival rates, provide new job opportunities, contribute to community growth, and enhance the well-being of stakeholders. Successful family firms may engage in philanthropic activities as a way of transmitting legacies between generations.

French, Morvern. "Magnificence and materiality : the commerce and culture of Flemish luxuries in late medieval Scotland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12020.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the prestige associated in late medieval Scotland with Flemish luxury products, using a material culture-based approach founded on the premise that objects can reveal the beliefs and attitudes of those who used them. Adding to existing scholarship which concentrates on the economic, political, and diplomatic connections between Scotland and Flanders, this research offers a new artefactual dimension to this relationship. It challenges the perception of Scotland as culturally and materially unsophisticated while simultaneously considering how objects were used in the expression of elite power and status. What drives this work is that late medieval Scottish elites were fully immersed in the most highly regarded and fashionable material trends of western Europe and that their consumption patterns fit into a wider mentality which saw Flemish craftsmanship as an ideal. A new model is thus presented, moving away from the traditional concentration on fluctuating wool exports and taking into account the cultural agency of noble, ecclesiastic, and burghal elites. It entails the initial examination of Scottish consumer demand and its impact on the Flemish luxury market. Following this are chapters on gift exchange and the presentation of magnificence, centred around the perception of the Flemish aesthetic as representative of elite status. Finally, this approach is applied to the burghal and clerical spheres, arguing that Flemish church furniture played a role in the formation and maintenance of elite urban identities. The comprehensive examination of artefactual sources, combined with the commercial, ritual, and ceremonial evidence found in written sources, enables the building up of a clearer impression of Scoto-Flemish material culture than has previously been realised. It is demonstrated that the material environment of late medieval Scottish elites was comparable to those of other European polities, constituting a common cultural sphere furnished by the luxury products of Flanders and the southern Low Countries.

Abstract:
Among the treasures of the Montana Museum of Art and Culture is a lovely and elaborate work of art entitled Wars of the Romani, a Flemish tapestry woven in the last third of the 16th century. It is a large weaving, 10 x 15, portraying two armies intertwined in merciless combat. The specific subject matter of Wars of the Romani is unknown, but a standard displaying the Roman eagle held aloft in the background indicates the presence of the Roman legions. The tapestry displays rushing horsemen mounted on vigorous horses, marching spearmen, and supine warriors, imagery common to Flemish battle tapestries from the last quarter of the sixteenth century. Framing the battle scene is a grotesque style border composed of gods placed within whimsical filigree architectural pavilions interwoven with fanciful decoration and mythical beasts. Wars of the Romanis Mannerist battle scene offers a view into the pictorial trends of the late Renaissance and displays the energy of the tumultuous era in which it was woven.

Abstract:
The aim of this study originated with my role as a teacher wanting to research the impact of the European Language Portfolio, ELP, (2001) on a small group of minority language students, in Brussels’ Flemish region. In this exploratory case study, the European Language Portfolio (Spanish model) was administered to a small group of forty-five primary school students from the Bicultural Foyer Project in Brussels. In spite of the students’ positive attitudes towards this portfolio, the results suggest that the ELP has no validity for them because the Brussels’ Flemish educational community does not offer the appropriate conditions for a possible broader use of this portfolio. Belgium’s language policy environment, including its language policies, is the fundamental reason for the non-implementation of the European Language Portfolio.

Abstract:
My thesis explores the potential manipulation of Roman brick using a Flemish bond, corner quoining, and barrel vaulting. The design uses this brick module to re-interpret the Ancient Roman domus, an urban residence embedded within the heart of the city. This classical inspiration is apparent in the tripartite plan and elevation as well as the use of the Golden Ratio, a classical proportioning system, incorporated throughout the design, revealed on both large and small scales. However, the emphasis of the project is on true brick construction, a process irrelevant to historical allusion.

Abstract:
In the 90´s, Europe used to be depicted as the most privileged political arena for regional nationalist political parties to access for “more” political power. In that sense, whereas formal channels of regional interest representation were taken for granted by those standing within federal political systems; informal channels of regional interest representation were highly valued by regional nationalists standing in decentralized or devolutionary constitutional settlements. In spite of nuanced institutional preferences, Europe was rationally inspired (Ostrom 2005) as it used to be perceived as an aggregation of formal-legal structures that could be used as a means to prescribe, proscribe and permit a certain behavior in exchange of a personal utility. Moreover, regional nationalists were policy “maximizers” who acted in isolation, away from the center, using their own limited political resources to maximize their policy gains by pursuing distinctive forms of political autonomy. However, by the end of the 90’s, both categories of regional nationalists plunged into European disillusion due to the limits of a sovereign logic prevailing in Europe.

However, in the 21st century, as soon as a new European policy cycle started to emerge and the economic crisis started to cripple, experienced regional nationalists realized that they could use the benefits of regional economic resources in face of the European Economic strategy to justify further concessions of policy competences that are still shared, either in theory or in practice, as well as to argue for new ones. The political plan would consist of using the reference of the European Economic targets to deliver policies, which would allow them to legitimize their nationalist aspirations, in both layers of governance, as well as to induce regional citizens into their political plan so they can finally reach the legal threshold to endorse a new state reform. Moreover, since they were rationally bounded, in the sense that they were lacking the policy expertise to perform these goals, they have learned to rely on a policy narrative (Shabahan et al 2011; Jones and Beth 2010; Radaelli 2010) embedded in a territorial economic argument to make sense of an advocacy coalition framework (Sabatier and Jenkins-Smith 1993), using informal channels of regional interest intermediation as “cognitive” structures (Scot 1995a) to articulate a policy strategy to be implemented in Europe and at the regional level of governance.

Therefore, and irrespectively of nuanced constitutional settlements, all experienced regional nationalists have returned to the center, using informal channels as an instrument of governance (Salamon 2002) to clarify the best policy options to be implemented in both layers of governance. In other words, regional nationalists have become “policy satisficers” (Simon 1954) who have learned to forgo immediate satisfaction in Europe to collect major gains of political power across multiple layers of governance. If the term “usage” can be defined as the act of using something to achieve certain political goals (Jacquot and Wolf 2003), in this research, we will apply the concept of “usage” to demonstrate that experienced regional nationalists in government have moved from a rational to a cognitive “usage” of the European institutions to perform renewed political preferences across multiple layers of governance.

Departing from an actor centered institutionalist approach (Mayntz and Sharp 1997), we will demonstrate that the N-VA in Flanders, since 2004, and the SNP in Scotland, since 2007, have become new pragmatic nationalists. In that sense, we will argue that, in a clear contrast with pragmatic nationalists of the 90’s who expected to legitimize their nationalist aspirations in Europe by the means of a rational “usage” of the European institutions; experienced regional nationalists have become new pragmatic nationalists as they have learned to rely on a cognitive “usage” of the European institutions to legitimize their nationalist aspirations, no longer in Europe, but through Europe.

We will then conclude that in the 21st century, and against traditional dogmas of the 90’s, the “usage” of Europe by regional nationalists is cognitively twisted, economically driven and collectively performed. It embraces all experienced regional nationalist political parties in government, irrespectively of their constitutional settlement or nationalist credo, as long as they possess the ability to anchor a political strategy embedded in “identity” without sticking to strict politics of nationalism.

In an attempt to answer the question as to what views on national identity can be found in language textbooks, this study examines the categories and nature of themes and situations that appear in a recent Flemish and Afrikaans language school textbook. Central to the study is the clarification as to which themes the situations and texts in these books are linked. Since 1991, a gradual political move towards New Right has been made 'visible' through democratic elections with sweeping victories for right-wing parties. Halfway around the world, South Africa was gradually moving out of the Apartheid-era. With a democratic win for the African National Congress in the 1994 national elections, this period seemed to be closed and relegated into history. However, based on the assumption that traces of these socio-political developments and consequent evolutions should be found in recent textbooks, I set out on this study.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to reconstruct the evolution of the Holocene deposits along the French Flemish Coastal Plain. This approach is achieved combining available and newly dataset from boreholes, cores descriptions and, for the first time in this plain, the interpretation of VHR seismic profiles on the coastal plain waterways. The study of lithology, micropaleontological assemblages (foraminifera and pollen analyses) and clay mineralogy provides the basis to recognize five sedimentary facies as representative of the Holocene infill. These sedimentary facies were interpreted as depositional facies assemblages in accordance to their depositional features. Depositional facies were grouped in three sedimentary units that better define the depositional environment. From base to top, the units are: alluvial plain, tide-dominated estuary and tidal flats. The alluvial plain consists of late Pleistocene deposits while estuarine and tidal flats units represent the Holocene deposits covering almost the whole available accommodation space. Distribution and geometry of these sedimentary units and their internal architecture of depositional facies were observed from ten cross-sections that cover most of the coastal plain. Stratigraphic arrangement shows the interaction of the Holocene sea-level rise and the coastal hydrodynamic conditions, dominated by the macrotidal regime and influenced by waves action, as the main factors that ruled the sedimentation of the area. This study opens new possibilities to better understand the coastal processes that acted in this lowland, as well as serves as a basis for future studies or modelling possible future scenario

Abstract:
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to discuss Jerome Boschs pictorial works in light of research, selection, translation and analysis of writings from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries about his life and works. Unlike contemporary iconographic studies in which the analysis of images and the interpretation of its symbols are the main method, this work intends to study Bosch through those texts, considering the genres of rhetorical discourse. Taking into account the differences among genres, this study explores the diversity of the texts, trying to point out, when possible, its commonalities, as found in the painters fame in the period, the description of his paintings and the qualification of his works, specially when they are regarded as fantastic, bizarre and wonderful.

Abstract:
Throughout the fourteenth century, Edward III issued several letters of protection encouraging Flemish textile workers to establish their trade in England. In the centuries that followed, the newcomers' contribution to the development of the English drapery has triggered off a hot debate. Indeed, until now, this migration has been studied only through its economic aspects, and no attention has been paid to the daily life of the migrants. This study purports to fill a critical gap as it expounds the difficult integration process of a migrant community, which was forced to leave its own country, and focuses on the microcosm of London, Colchester and Great Yarmouth in the fourteenth century

Abstract:

Abstract:

The Flemish cattle breed, originarily from the Northeast region of France, was imported to Brazil from Argentina in 1945, being allocated to an experimental Station in Lages, State of Santa Catarina (SC). The Flemish is a double purpose breed very well adapted to the altiplane. Such features contributed to a quick dissemination of this breed in the Southern region of Brazil. However, the introduction of more specialized breeds in the past decades caused a loss of interest in the Flemish breed, resulting in a drastic reduction in the herd size, with only about fifty animals still remaining, all located at the EPAGRI Experimental Station in Lages, SC. The high risk of extinction imposed to this small herd, along with its importance to biodiversity, justifies the need for its preservation. For that, the Ovum Pick Up (OPU)/in vitro embryo production (IVP) and the multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) procedures are among the available reproductive biotechnologies that could be readily applied for the maintenance and expansion of the breed. However, data regarding the oocyte retrieval efficiency by OPU and embryo yield either by IVP or MOET for Flemish cattle are still lacking. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of the in vivo and in vitro embryo production systems for the Flemish breed, using Holstein females as control counterparts. Eight multiparous Flemish females and eight Holstein females were allocated to two subgroups of four animals per breed. Each subgroup was subjected to 10 OPU sessions, at weekly intervals, or two MOET protocols, for two periods of 63 days. After the conclusion of one 63-days long period of OPU and MOET sessions, both procedures were repeated in a second period of 63 days, inverting the subgroups of animals for each procedure. The OPU was performed by ultrasonography for the transvaginal aspiration of ≥3 mm follicles. Recovered oocytes were morphologically graded and subjected to IVP procedures, including the in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture steps, up to Day 7 of development. For the MOET subgroups, a standard decreasing FSH dose treatment was used followed by AI, with embryo recovery performed by nonsurgical procedures on Day 7 after AI. Frozen semen from the same Flemish bull was used for the entire experiment. Quantitative data were analyzed using the PROC MIXED or by the Friedman test (SAS), whereas qualitative data were analyzed by the χ2 test, and data on the embryonic morphology and kinetics of development by the Kruskal-Wallis test (Minitab), for P<0.05. After 20 OPU sessions per breed, a total of 635 viable oocytes were obtained from Flemish females, with 8.0 ± 0.7 oocytes/animal/section, which was significantly higher than from Holstein cows (543 viable oocytes, 7.3 ± 0.7 oocytes/animal/section). The mean number of blastocysts per IVP procedure (3.9 ± 1.5 vs. 2.1 ± 1.2) and blastocyst rates (11.8% vs. 7.2%) were higher in Flemish than in Holstein females, respectively. After four MOET sessions (total of 32 flushings), Flemish females yielded more viable embryos than Holstein animals (111 vs. 48 viable embryos, with 7.5 ± 1.8 vs. 3.7 ± 1.4 embryos/female, respectively). In conclusion, Flemish females yielded more viable oocytes by OPU and more viable embryos by IVP or MOET than Holstein females. Also, MOET procedures were more efficient than OPU/IVP for the production of embryos, irrespective of the breed. Nevertheless, both reproductive biotechnologies, OPU/IVP and MOET procedures, were efficient as useful tools for the genetic conservation of Flemish cattle

Abstract:
This study examines the framing of Syria fighters in Swedish newspapers during selected time periods of 2016 and 2017. Syria Fighters refer to individuals who travel to Syria to join the ongoing conflict, an occurrence commonly known as Foreign Fighters. Using framing analysis and framing theory the study finds that Syria fighters and their actions are framed mainly as problematic and as a negative social phenomenon. The study also makes a comparison to similar, previous research of Dutch and Flemish newspapers and finds clear similarities as well as differences.

Abstract:
This study traces the genesis and development of the History of Constantine tapestries designed by Pietro da Cortona and woven on the looms established by Francesco Barberini shortly after his return from France in December 1625. The circumstances surrounding the creation of the series provide a foundation and a framework for exploring its meaning and purpose. Though inspired by an earlier Constantine suite of tapestries designed by Rubens, the "Cortona" panels should be read as an independent entity, the significance of which can only be fully appreciated within the context of the gran salone of the Palazzo Barberini, which I propose was their intended destination. This conclusion is supported by the many links between the tapestries and Barberini ideology, papal politics, the palace and the ceiling fresco in the Salone. Like the Divine Providence fresco, the "Cortona" series is a summa of the virtues and religious, political, intellectual and social initiatives of the family. The series emerges finally as a promotionally Italian endeavour, a showcase of Italian art and culture.

Abstract:
The establishment of linguistic borders in Belgium has in no way limited the internationalization and francization of the Flemish Brussels-Capital’s periphery. An influx of a national French-speaking population, coming from the Belgian capital, causes a feeling of minorization among the Dutch-speaking population living in this periphery. Since the early 1990s, municipal and regional authorities have been implementing language policies, which are supposed to preserve the Flemish culture of the nineteen neighbouring municipalities of Brussels-Capital. A full-fledged territorial apparatus, officially called the "Vlaamse Rand" (literally the "Flemish periphery"), analysed in this thesis, aims to "discipline" the allophones’ language use within public spaces. How do the Francophone inhabitants of Brussels-Capital’s periphery settle in their territory of residence, linguistically and politically organized by the Flemish authorities ?This thesis focuses on a psycho-sociological study of space, combining the approaches of Sociolinguistics and Cultural Psychology with those of Human Geography. It examines the impact of both formal and informal language strategies on everyday geographic mobilities and territorialities of Francophone people living in Brussels-Capital’s periphery. The results from online questionnaires, participant observations and, above all, qualitative interviews contribute to the formulation of an analytical framework which enables to evaluate, at different spatial scales, the influence of the use of languages on territorial behaviours as well as on perceptions of the territory of residence
