Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Joseph Fletcher claims in his Christian situation ethic developed in the nineteen sixties that there is nothing wrong with the use of euthanasia on children born with Down’s syndrome. But is it possible to use his claim of non-persons as non-moral subjects in an ethic that claims not to be legalistic? This paper affirms that Fletcher’s claims are wrong, and that questions motivated by a lack of resources should be answered with a critical discussion regarding those resources. Not with an ethic that supports euthanasia.

Abstract:
From time to time medical ethicists bemoan the loss of a religious perspective in medical ethics. The discipline had its origins in the thinking of explicitly religious thinkers such as Paul Ramsey and Joseph Fletcher. Furthermore, many of those who contributed to the early development of the discipline had training in theology. One thinks of Daniel Callahan, Richard McCormick, Albert Jonsen, Sam. Banks. As the discipline becomes more and more self-reflective, with attention being paid to methodological and conditional concerns, it is only natural that the roots are due for a reexamination. The time has therefore come for some reassessment. The first steps here are taken in the form of a dialogue between the coauthors to clarify authentic contributions and weed out unauthentic ones.

Abstract:
The moral right to act in self-defense seems to be unproblematic: you are allowed to kill an aggressor if doing so is necessary for saving your own life. Indeed, it seems that from the moral Standpoint, acting in self-defense is doing the right thing. Thanks, however, to works by George Fletcher and Judith Thomson, it is now well known how unstable the moral basis of the right to self-defense is. We are in the dark with regard to one of the most basic problems raised by this right, namely: the problem of the innocent aggressor. The disturbing question is simple enough: Is a potential victim allowed to kill, in self-defense, a morally innocent aggressor?

Abstract:

As we approach the 21st Century, our society is increasingly being faced with technological advances. One of such areas of advancement is the reasearch involving human genes. The human genome-mapping project(HGMP) started on the first of october 1990 with a group of over 350 labs. but by late 90's, many important advances had been discovered concerning how to improve the human specie. With these advances came ethical questions and concerns. Both moral and legal questions have been raised as to the effectiveness and safty of this technology. It is the contention of this paper to give a clearer meaning and understanding of the ethics of genetic control. As such I will discuss the wide spread fears and anxiety brought about by the introduction of this new technology. To make this aim more comprehensible, I will pay particular attention to Joseph Fletcher and his books on Genetic control, and Humanhood: Essays In Biomedical Ethics. Fletchers ardent support for genetic control has developed worldwide debates from both ethicists and philosophers as to the safty and efficiency of genetic engineering.

Peyper, Liesl. "Media ethics in financial journalism : an investigation into the situation in South Africa." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53497.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Financial reporting is one of the most vulnerable sectors of journalism for the occurrence of possible unethical conduct. Financial journalists handle news with financial value and have access to privileged market information which confront them with numerous ethical problems, namely the use of press releases, the influence of public relations, the use of financial jargon, reporting on shares and the securities market, journalists' dependence on analysts' opinions and recommendations, the receipt of freebies and insider trading. This assignment gives an overview of the incidence of unethical conduct in financial reporting in South Africa. Ethical principles relevant for financial reporting, namely accuracy, truth and deception, fairness, objectivity and conflict of interest are analysed, discussed and illustrated with incidences of possible unethical behaviour in financial reporting. The research method comprised the scrutiny of business sections of newspapers and articles in finance magazines, articles from the World Wide Web, as well as sources on media ethics and business journalism. Accuracy in financial reporting is a necessity for sound journalism. The impact of press releases on accuracy in financial reporting was investigated, but did not yield sufficient proof that they necessarily lead to inaccurate reporting. Financial journalists' reliance on the opinions and recommendations of business analysts, however, revealed a significant contribution to inaccurate reporting. A chore journalistic value, truth establishes trust between the media and the public. Financial reporting should promote understanding of the relevant facts, not only for readers with a keen interest in financial matters, but also for the average audience. South African financial journalists use excessive jargon, arcane financial data and affected language which may confuse and even mislead the general reader. Share price reporting in South Africa is generally factual and the investigation did not yield any incidences of share punting among financial journalists. Analysts' reports, however, pose a serious threat for media independence as financial journalists rely on their expertise. Conflicts of interest arise when there is conflict between a journalist's professional loyalties and outside interests. An investigation into possible insider trading in South African financial journalism did not yield any proof of such incidences. The receipt of freebies, however, remains a grey area because most codes of conduct of South African news agencies only prohibit the receipt of freebies which are of more than nominal value. Recommendations include advanced journalism training courses which will enhance journalists' business writing skills and knowledge of basic Economics and finance, columns in financial publications which explain financial jargon and a greater emphasis on media ethics.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to demonstrate, by way of a multidisciplinary study, that consent is, despite its legal definition which refers to the free and enlighted expression of individual will, in fact, at times limited if not eliminated, by social considerations, arising from the medical, economic and legal context. These considerations reflect what one might call the social norm. An appropriate understanding of consent serves, therefore, to express the social norm as a constraint, which, in turn, acts as a measure of what it means to belong in society. Thus, while consent is often presented as the fundamental principle to be respected in biomedical research, it is in reality, merely one principle to respect among others. These limitations connected to consent are exacerbated in emergency situations where consent is sometimes reduced to mere signature, and in some cases it has been recognized that research can be undertaken without the subject's prior consent.

Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Institutionen för Vårdvetenskap, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-20554.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Title: “Holy” War on Human Rights - A hermeneutic study of the complex situation of human rights activists in Afghanistan Author: Zandra Bergman Supervisor: Maud Eriksen Examiner: Johanna Romare Department of TheologyMaster program of Religion in Peace and ConflictMaster’s thesis, 15 credits  In September 2020, the latest attempt to bring peace to Afghanistan, the intra-Afghan peace talks formally began. The opening of the peace negotiations failed to produce the long-desired ceasefire. Instead, it marked an increase of violence: a sharp number of deliberate killings of human rights defenders. The purpose of this study is to examine lived experiences of human rights activists in Afghanistan and the complex situation in which they are operating and to gain a deeper understanding of why they have increasingly been subject to violence. Furthermore, it is an attempt to explore the meaning of violence against Afghan human rights activists promoting women's rights. This is a hermeneutic study primarily based on data collected through interviews with two Afghan human rights activists. Rather than touch every topic and present data about an objective reality or truth, the aim is to shed light on the shared experiences of the respondents, providing snapshots of the current situation of Afghan human rights defenders, and to discuss their stories in the light of selected theories. The following research questions have been used to guide the study: (1) How can we understand the complex situation of human rights activists in Afghanistan, and (2) What are the underlying reasons they are being targeted? By adopting mainly, the concepts of hegemony: to decode underlying dimensions of power struggles, and a critical feminist approach: to grasp the gender dimensions of the conflict, I have exposed how my respondents in their positions of human rights defenders bring new life to a historical conflict of interests impinging on the future nature of Afghanistan. Moreover, they expose a recurrent clash between opposing hegemonic aspirations: a struggle over the maintenance of social order in the Afghan society, in which they are being placed at the center.

Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010058.

Full text
Abstract:
Whither ethics in banking? This question has increasingly pervaded media and academic concerns since the outbreak of the 2007 financial crisis, and has also triggered this dissertation. Beyond the current turmoil on the one hand, and avoiding a normative approach on the other, this study focuses on ethics in the making, on ethics at work in organizing and organizations, that is and ethics understood essentially as practice. Our perspective considers ethics in situ, from a practice and situational approach and not solely from either the standpoint of discourse or that of norms and their effective compliance. This allows us precisely to apprehend in a transversal and integrated way the link between ethics as process and such discourses and norms within organizing. Through an ethnographic study of a major French Investment Bank's Anti-Money Laundering Compliance unit, this thesis focuses on ethics in the making, and the work of ‘ethics as situated practice’. We propose and define this syntagma to consider ethics as an organizational phenomenon, which we define as 1) complex and dynamic, 2) simultaneously embedded at the micro (within moral subjects), meso (within human organisations) and macro (at the institutional level), and 3) in an engaged loop circling back to its situation. The context of banking compliance is of great relevance for this study, particularly in times of financial and values crisis, since it exacerbates the specific tensions and stakes that challenge on a daily basis ethics in its constant relation with norms, risks and the imperative of compliance

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence today is a rapidly developing branch of science and technology. The implementation of artificial intelligence technology in industry, communications, services and leisure can lead to serious and uncontrollable societal changes. At the same time, the use of artificial intelligence in everyday life, especially, when making decisions, leads to ethical collisions. The article attempts to answer some philosophical questions concerning the problem of decision making and human responsibility in situations caused by the use of the artificial intelligence technology. The current situation is also analyzed in the field of international technical standardization of artificial intelligence ethics and possible directions for its further development.

Full text
Abstract:
A learning module was introduced in a required Mechanical Engineering undergraduate course with the goal of increasing the ethical awareness of students. Specifically, the students were supposed to understand the basic theories of ethics and an engineering code of ethics, apply this understanding to differentiate between ethical and unethical engineering practices, and be able to suggest ethical solutions. The course was junior level Measurements and Instrumentation, taken by 120 students in six sections of about 20 each. In each section, a two-and-a-half-hour “Ethics workshop” was conducted during a lab period which included several interactive student activities such as discussion of theories of ethics, engineering case-studies and guidelines to solve an engineering “problem”, short video clips, a quiz, and an in-depth analysis of a hypothetical situation. At the conclusion of the module, students were asked to prepare a short report on an ethical solution of that situation. A survey was administered several days before and again several days after the workshop with identical questions. Based on the chi-square test, statistically significant increase in the ethical awareness of students was evident. Similar modules were also presented in freshman seminars courses. Although the above survey involved primarily junior students, it appears that the introduction of material on topics of academic integrity would be helpful to first-year students, and the introduction of engineering professional ethics would be useful at the beginning of their major in the first semester in the junior year.

Abstract:
The Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Purdue University at Columbus/SE Indiana hosted ABET evaluators for the first time in the fall of 2005. Both the program objectives and outcomes of the MET program contain elements of ethical behavior and lifelong learning. These elements are simply reflective of the importance put on ethics and lifelong learning by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology programs in the TC2K criteria. This work will describe the use of test cases and specific exercises that are incorporated in classes during the first semester and final semester of the two-year Associate of Science program. In-class surveys of students are also used to examine the ethical and professional behavior of students. The test cases are presented in multiple parts with students required to finish their answers to the questions from the first part before they get to see the second part. The same procedure is followed for the remaining parts of the test case. Each part of the test case also includes comments from a panel of experienced engineers who lend their expertise to the situation. These comments are shared with the students. For lifelong learning, the students are presented with a short lecture on the value of lifelong learning that includes relevant data and facts related to lifelong learning. After this, an assignment is given that asks the students to learn about how to design a container for nuclear waste storage and ship it to the proper waste disposal location. Other assignments are mentioned and can be used in a similar manner.

Abstract:
The concept of “Global Ethics” refers to the analysis and identification of ethical solutions to the challenges of the contemporary world. Among the current global problems we bring to the fore: illegal immigration as a component of human trafficking, but also other global issues interdependent with the two crimes above: violation of human rights and freedoms, poverty, resource scarcity, discrimination, illegal international business and trade, all of which, requesting from the authorities and beyond, legislative and ethical solutions. Legal migration is the widely accepted form globally, since it can be determined over time, but also controlled in terms of the number of people, fields and jobs. Illegal migration is the alternative used by people who cannot use the legal route to go abroad. A component of trafficking in human beings, illegal migration is a global scourge, hard to control, caused by organised criminal groups, but also by the increasing ingenuity of criminals. Although the phenomenon is manifesting itself worldwide, it is accentuated by the fact that there is a lack of appropriate legislation and an effective system of cooperation between government institutions and civil society.Trafficking in human beings must be related to the causes that led to its emergence: discrimination in the labour market revealed by high unemployment rates (women vs. men), poverty combined with low remuneration for work performed, corruption of authorities, poor border control, restriction of legal migration opportunities, internationalization of criminal groups correlated with high profits from human trafficking, poor information of people who want to emigrate about the real effects of the labour market. Knowing this phenomenon, but also of the causes that cause it to occur, determines the process of working for knowledge, resolution and fight against it. The present work is intended to be a source of information that makes available to those interested that information about illegal migration, as well as how state structures can and should be involved in the situation.

Mager, Franziska, and Silvia Galandini. Research Ethics: A practical guide. Oxfam GB, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2020.6416.

Full text
Abstract:
Any research must follow ethical principles, particularly when it involves people as participants and is likely to impact them. This is standard practice in academic research and a legal requirement in medical trials, but also applies to research carried out by Oxfam. Oxfam’s work focuses on vulnerable populations, and takes place under difficult circumstances. When research takes place in such vulnerable and fragile contexts, high ethical standards need to be met and tailored to the specific characteristics of each situation. Oxfam welcomes the adaptation of this guideline by other NGOs, community organizations and researchers working in fragile contexts and with vulnerable communities. The guideline should be read together with other relevant Oxfam and Oxfam GB policies and protocols, including the guidelines on Writing Terms of Reference for Research, Integrating Gender in Research Planning and Doing Research with Enumerators. A flowchart summarizing the guideline is also available to download on this page.
