Abstract:
In the current debate concerning the Swedish Schools of Music and Performing Arts (SMPAs) the concept of flexibility is frequently used. Here it mostly describes the necessity to take students’ requests and needs into account in teacher education and the institutions’ ability to adapt to changing demands for artistic activities among children and adolescents. In contrast to this view, this study examines flexibility as a central competency of the teaching profession and particularly in a curriculum-free environment such as the SMPAs. Resting on the assumption that teachers with a large toolkit have a certain advantage in practising flexibility, the study is based on interviews with three multi-instrumentalists, all of them experienced music teachers in SMPAs. The analysis suggests three forms of flexibility that are related to the teachers’ use of instrumental tools, each of them emerging in particular kinds of teaching activities: problem-solving flexibility in instrument-related counseling, method flexibility in ensemble leadership, and role flexibility in group music-making. The findings are discussed in relation to ideals of teacher specialization and versatility, and the notion of tool-based flexibility is distinguished from improvisation as a teaching skill.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

ENGLSIH ABSTRACT With distance from the distance – how can we interpret the changes that were so hastily imposed during the pandemic and what lessons have we learned? In this extended editorial, we highlight eight published contributions that are part of this journal’s special theme regarding higher education and the corona pandemic. We also give our own reflections on how the transition to remote teaching affected higher education in Sweden, based on our roles as educational developers and researchers. The publications in this journal show the diversity of experiences during the pandemic, and the complexity of drawing general conclusions about (distance) teaching and learning. Many teachers faced new challenges such as a significantly higher workload, and demands to implement quick solutions, while the changed conditions also gave opportunities for pedagogical development. Many students had difficulties in maintaining motivation and creating viable study routines, while some appreciated the flexibility of distance learning. The current editorial includes both retrospectives and outlooks on the consequences of the pandemic for higher education, as well as, suggestions for a few ‘questions’ that we think should be part of future research.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the analysis of and suggestions for improving company-level flexicurity during the restructuring process, based on a best-practice case in Sweden. The parties involved in the restructuring process created company-level flexicurity through strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) in exchange for increased numerical flexibility by means of temporary employees. The high numerical flexibility was possible because the trade unions saw that top management was committed to strategic socially responsible behaviour in the restructuring process. Our proposal concerns the dissemination of a model for company-level flexicurity during the restructuring process which promotes: (1) improved strategic CSR in the restructuring process, (2) improved transition to new employment in the local labour market and (3) improved flexibility, which creates increased efficiency, competitiveness and rapid payback in the course of restructuring.

Abstract:
The need for flexibility in organisations and information systems has long been recognised. Much research has been conducted to understand the flexibility concept in various types of information systems. Comparatively less research has been conducted to understand the process of managing flexibility in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. This paper focuses on developing a conceptual framework for managing flexibility in ERP systems emphasising the need for a match between external and internal flexibilities. The application of the framework is illustrated with a case example. The framework is intended to understand ERP systems' flexibility enabled organisational performance. The framework will provide a basis to assess the impact of ERP systems' flexibility on organisations, to measure the internal and external flexibilities of ERP systems and to develop guidelines to manage flexibilities for ERP systems.

Abstract:
3D scanners are supporting technology which offers a higher level of flexibility to create designs for ergonomic tooling, biocompatible surgical guides, and realistic prototypes and parts. Flexibility helps to reduce lead time, weight, cost, and product development time. Scanning technologies are in tandem with support software that helps a designer to (re)design products at a cheaper and faster rate. There is a need to understand different types of flexibilities and associated application of 3D scanner. In this article, we have conducted an extensive review of the available literature for identifying various flexibilities of 3D scanners and its applications. This research categorises 3D scanner flexibility and applications into five major types. From design to final quality inspection, these flexibilities play a significant role in industries and sectors to achieve optimum performance. Ranking of these flexibilities and their impact on different applications are accomplished using the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) with the help of expert opinion. The ranking of five significant flexibilities by using 3D scanners, undertaken through the AHP technique shows that scanning provides object flexibility at a higher level. The impacts of different flexibilities on applications are also weighted, and it shows that all flexibilities are enough to achieve application individually. This digital technology is helpful to create the customised product which is also helpful to achieve goals of Industry 4.0. It facilitates the customisation and has a significant impact on the design applications. This study provides an understanding of the 3D scanner in the context of flexibilities by identifying the different flexibilities it offers when used for different applications. Findings may assist developing a decision support system for the selection of 3D scanners for the different applications.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to empirically investigate the triadic relationship between internal integration, internal flexibility and external flexibility. Design/methodology/approach This research hypothesized the mediation effect of internal flexibility on the relationship between internal integration and external flexibility. Survey data were collected and analyzed using simple and mediation regression analysis to test the study hypotheses. Findings The research finding reveals that machine, labor and material handling flexibilities; being as internal flexibility dimensions mediate the relationship between internal integration and volume and mix flexibilities; being as external flexibility dimensions. The results provided insufficient evidence on the mediating effect of routing flexibility on the relationship between internal integration and both volume and mix flexibilities. Research limitations/implications This research presents a new perspective for research studies to understand the factors that affect manufacturing flexibility. However, the nature of the surveyed sample and using of a single informant might limit the generalizability of the research findings. Practical implications This study provides useful insights for firms wishing to enhance their competitiveness through improving their flexibility. The companies should be aware of the importance of developing a suitable platform for coordinating inter-departmental activities to enhance its internal competencies, which, in turn, improve its customer-facing capabilities and boosts its competitiveness. Originality/value This paper contributes to knowledge by proposing and empirically testing the mediating effect of internal flexibility on the relationship between internal integration and external flexibility.

Abstract:
Manufacturing flexibilities improves an organization capability to respond to customer demands without incurring excessive time and cost penalties. The objective of this paper is to understand and explicate the nature of interaction between advanced manufacturing technology, sourcing practices and manufacturing flexibilities and assess their relative impact on different flexibilities for the trade off associated with the strategic choice between different methods of achieving manufacturing flexibilities. This research aims to report the findings of an exploratory study administered in North Indian medium and large manufacturing organizations, who are in the process of achieving the manufacturing flexibilities at all or various levels by acquiring, developing or utilizing the advanced manufacturing technology or by the use of specific/different sourcing practices. The statistical result suggests significant relationships between sourcing practices, advanced manufacturing technology and manufacturing flexibilities at different levels of manufacturing flexibility. The results also suggest that a organization could deploy specific sourcing practice or advanced manufacturing technology to target specific manufacturing flexibility in pursuit of agility-based competitive advantages.

PurposeThe objective of this paper is to empirically test and verify the enablers of volume flexibility and product-mix flexibility and to assess the influence of these flexibilities on operational performance.Design/methodology/approachA research framework consisting of nine pairs of hypotheses was developed using an extensive literature review. Using a self-administered questionnaire, 391 responses were collected, and these responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling techniques.FindingsThe findings empirically confirm the enablers of volume flexibility and product-mix flexibility. The proposed model explained 59 percent variance in volume flexibility and 63 percent variance in product-mix flexibility. Volume flexibility and product-mix flexibility together explained 38 percent variance in operational performance.Research limitations/implicationsTheoretically, this study advances flexibility literature in two significant ways. First, the study conducts first of its kind quantitative empirical investigation considering upstream, downstream, and internal integration practices as enablers of volume flexibility and product-mix flexibility. Second, this study adds to the flexibility literature by suggesting the positive influence of volume and product-mix flexibility on the operational performance of firms.Originality/valueThe study reinforces the role of enablers in the development of volume and product-mix flexibilities. Thus, the study provides a comprehensive view of flexibility enablers that can be used as a diagnostic tool, which practitioners can use to assess and deploy flexibility.

Abstract:
In order to ensure security of supply in a future energy system with a high share of volatile electricity generation, flexibility technologies are needed. Industrial demand-side management ranks as one of the most efficient flexibility options. This paper analyses the effect of the integration of industrial demand-side management through the flexibilisation of aluminium electrolysis and other flexibilities of the electricity system and adjacent sectors. The additional flexibility options include electricity storage, heat storage in district heating networks, controlled charging of electric vehicles, and buffer storage in hydrogen electrolysis. The utilisation of the flexibilities is modelled in different settings with an increasing share of renewable energies, applying a dispatch model. This paper compares which contributions the different flexibilities can make to emission reduction, avoidance of curtailment, and reduction of fuel and CO2 costs, and which circumstances contribute to a decrease or increase of overall emissions with additional flexibilities. The analysis stresses the rising importance of flexibilities in an energy system based on increasing shares of renewable electricity generation, and shows that flexibilities are generally suited to reduce carbon emissions. It is presented that the relative contribution towards the reduction of curtailment and costs of flexibilisation of aluminium electrolysis are high, whereby the absolute effect is small compared to the other options due to the limited number of available processes.

Abstract:
Lean and flexible manufacturing is a matter of necessity for the automotive industries today. Rising consumer expectations, higher raw material and processing costs, and dynamic market conditions are driving the auto sector to become smarter and agile. This paper presents a machine learning-based soft sensor approach for identification and prediction of lean manufacturing (LM) levels of auto industries based on their performances over multifarious flexibilities such as volume flexibility, routing flexibility, product flexibility, labour flexibility, machine flexibility, and material handling. This study was based on a database of lean manufacturing and associated flexibilities collected from 46 auto component enterprises located in the Pune region of Maharashtra State, India. As many as 29 different machine learning models belonging to seven architectures were explored to develop lean manufacturing soft sensors. These soft sensors were trained to classify the auto firms into high, medium or low levels of lean manufacturing based on their manufacturing flexibilities. The seven machine learning architectures included Decision Trees, Discriminants, Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), Ensembles, and Neural Networks (NN). The performances of all models were compared on the basis of their respective training, validation, testing accuracies, and computation timespans. Primary results indicate that the neural network architectures provided the best lean manufacturing predictions, followed by Trees, SVM, Ensembles, KNN, Naive Bayes, and Discriminants. The trilayered neural network architecture attained the highest testing prediction accuracy of 80%. The fine, medium, and coarse trees attained the testing accuracy of 60%, as did the quadratic and cubic SVMs, the wide and narrow neural networks, and the ensemble RUSBoosted trees. Remaining models obtained inferior testing accuracies. The best performing model was further analysed by scatter plots of predicted LM classes versus flexibilities, validation and testing confusion matrices, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves, and the parallel coordinate plot for identifying manufacturing flexibility trends for the predicted LM levels. Thus, machine learning models can be used to create effective soft sensors that can predict the level of lean manufacturing of an enterprise based on the levels of its manufacturing flexibilities.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how the consistency between objective and perceived environmental uncertainty might affect supply chain flexibilities that cope with supply chain risk. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a case study of comparative four companies in order to obtain an in-depth knowledge of the environmental conditions under which the companies implement different types of supply chain risk management (SCRM) strategies: logistics flexibility and relationship flexibility. Findings The case analysis not only distinguished the different effects of objective and perceived environmental uncertainty on supply chain flexibility, but also established the propositions about the effects of the consistency between objective and perceived environmental uncertainty on logistics flexibility and relationship flexibility in SCRM. Originality/value In principle, supply chain flexibility aims to cope with complex and turbulent environments. Yet, empirical findings about the effects of environmental uncertainty on supply chain flexibility are inconclusive. This study addressed this question by differentiating between objective and perceived environmental uncertainty as well as between logistics and relationship supply chain flexibilities.

Abstract:
Supply chain (SC) resilience and flexibility are important research topics receiving growing attention. However, the academic literature needs empirical studies on SC resilience capable of investigating the inter-organizational components of flexibility along different tiers. Therefore, this paper analyzes the main lack of flexibilities in three Brazilian automotive SCs that limit their resilience and therefore their capacity to better support and meet the demand changes in the marketplace. A multi-tier case study approach is adopted. Research findings identify lack of flexibilities in different tiers that inhibit the SC resilience as well as manufacturing and SC flexibilities that build SC resilience. The findings also highlight that the same SC may have the flexibility to be resilient for one of its products but not for another product, what sheds new lights on the academic literature. Finally, flexible SCs should be designed to increase SC resilience to cope with mishaps as significant demand changes.

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the effects of lower limb flexibility on the functional performance of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Methods: Thirty children, whose functional levels were at 1 or 2 according to the Brooke Lower Extremity Functional Classification Scale, were included in this study. The flexibilities of the hamstrings, hip flexors, tensor fascia latae, and gastrocnemius muscles were evaluated in the children’s dominant lower limbs. The children’s functional performance was assessed using 6-minute walk tests and timed performance tests. The correlations between the flexibilities of the lower limb muscles and the performance tests were examined. Results: The flexibilities of the lower extremity muscles were found to be correlated to the 6-minute walk tests and the timed performance tests. The flexibility of the hamstrings (r = −.825), the gastrocnemius muscles (r = .545), the hip flexors (r = .481), and the tensor fascia latae (r = .445) were found to be correlated with functional performance as measured by the 6-minute walk tests (P < .05). Discussion: The results of the current study indicate that the flexibility of the lower limbs has an effect on functional performance in the early stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. More research is needed to determine the functional effects of flexibility on performance by adding long-term flexibility exercises to the physiotherapy programs of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Abstract:
Purpose Supply chain flexibility is crucial for firms to respond to uncertain circumstances caused by environmental factors, such as the diversity of customer demands, problems of product safety, and adjustments of industrial policies. To investigate the approach to enhance supply chain flexibility, the purpose of this paper is to propose that both internal and external information integration contribute to reactive and proactive supply chain flexibilities, which elicit high operational performance. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of 84 food companies that have been listed three years in China and content analysis based on their annual reports, evidence was collected to test the hypotheses through hierarchical regressions. Findings The results reveal that external information integration results in both reactive and proactive flexibilities, which further improve operational performance. Internal information integration positively affects both reactive and proactive flexibilities, but its mediating role was not determined in the study. Originality/value The research provides insights into how supply chain flexibility mediates the effect of supply chain information integration on operational performance in the context of the Chinese food industry.

Abstract:
We apply probit analysis to respondent-level data reported in the 2008 National Study of the Changing Workforce to decompose respondents' stated preference for workplace flexibilities. We base our analysis on a unique question that asks workers how much they would value workplace flexibilities if they were searching for a new job. The data are very detailed, which allows us to include an array of covariates that may account for the observed variation in flexibility preferences. Covariates such as gender, number of children under the age of 18, sleep problems, work-family conflict, and stress are positively correlated with flexibility preference. Other covariates, such as firm size and public employee status are negatively correlated with flexibility preference. We found mixed evidence for respondents' age, health status, race, and ethnicity.

Abstract:
Energy generation and consumption in the power grid must be balanced at every single moment. Within the synchronous area of continental Europe, flexible generators and loads can provide Frequency Containment Reserve and Frequency Restoration Reserve marketed through the balancing markets. The Transmission System Operators use these flexibilities to maintain or restore the grid frequency when there are deviations. This paper shows the future flexibility potential of Germany’s household sector, in particular for single-family and twin homes in 2025 and 2030 with the assumption that households primarily optimize their self-consumption. The primary focus is directed to the flexibility potential of Electric Vehicles, Heat Pumps, Photovoltaics and Battery Storage Systems. A total of 10 different household system configurations were considered and combined in a weighted average based on the scenario framework of the German Grid Development Plan. The household generation, consumption and storage units were simulated in a mixed-integer linear programming model to create the time series for the self-consumption optimized households. This solved the unit commitment problem for each of the decentralized households in their individual configurations. Finally, the individual household flexibilities were evaluated and then aggregated to a Germany-wide flexibility profile for single-family and twin homes. The results indicate that the household sector can contribute significantly to system stabilization with an average potential of 30 GW negative and 3 GW positive flexibility in 2025. In 2030, the corresponding flexibilities potentially increase to 90 GW and 30 GW, respectively. This underlines that considerable flexibility reserves could be provided by single-family and twin homes in the future.

Abstract:
Purpose – Recent economic recession has highlighted the role of labour market flexibility as a key factor of competitiveness of a country. Despite the fact that labour mobility can essentially be seen as part of labour market flexibility, there is notable research gap concerning spatial mobility and other facets of labour market flexibility. The purpose of this special issue is to fill these gaps. Design/methodology/approach – The papers in the special issue represent various quantitative methods and databases, whereas mainly micro data (workplace, labour force or immigrant surveys, job search portal, etc.) is used. However, the type of labour market flexibility addressed is both micro- and macro-level. Findings – It is demonstrated that labour occupational mobility is determined by the business cycle, numerical flexibility, occupational categories, and sector. Spatial mobility may have counterintuitive effects on individual occupational mobility depending on gender and it is related to various flexibilities in the workplace. It is also suggested that different types of flexibilities on a firm level are interdependent of each other. Originality/value – The special issue adds to the labour market related knowledge by integrating labour market flexibility and mobility. Individually, both phenomena have been studied before, but not much research is devoted to their inter-linkages. The special issue also contributes by examining labour market flexibility and spatial mobility in the context of different countries, economic cycles, and institutional settings.

Abstract:
Lunds universitet har deltagit i benchmarkingprojekt organiserade av European Centre for Strategic Management of Universities (ESMU) sedan 2000.

Abstract:
Background: In 2018, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued flexibilities to the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, relaxing the nutrition standards for milk, whole grains, and sodium. This study examines the implementation decision-making among Missouri school food services and the impact of implementing these flexibilities on the meals served. Methods: We developed a survey using the Consolidated Framework of Implementation to determine schools’ implementation of the flexibilities and factors related to implementation. To determine how the implementation of flexibilities affected participation, we merged the survey results with school-level meal county data from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. We used ordinary least squares regression to examine how flexibility adoption related to the number of meals served. Results: Most schools implemented the wheat, milk, and sodium flexibilities. Common reasons for implementation were increasing participation, meeting students’ preferences, expanding menu variety, and saving money. The implementation of flexibilities was associated with more lunches and breakfasts being served per month, particularly among free and reduced-price meals. Conclusions: Continued research is needed to determine how the increased uptake of school meals that do not fully meet dietary guidelines by low-income students results in inequities in health outcomes. The findings can inform the design and implementation of future policies, especially as new rules related to flexibility design are determined.

This work presented in this paper is based on the simulation of the routing flexibility enabled manufacturing system. In this study four levels of each factor (i.e. routing flexibility, system load conditions, system capacity and four part sequencing rules) are considered for the investigation. The performance of the routing flexibility enabled manufacturing system (RFEMS) is evaluated using three performance measures like make-span time, resource utilization and work-in-process. The analysis of results shows that the performance of the manufacturing system may be improved by adding in routing flexibility at the initial level along with other factors. However, the benefit of this flexibility diminishes at higher levels of routing flexibilities.

Abstract:
Today’s businesses experience many uncertainties in their internal operations and environments. Manufacturing flexibility is an excellent response to these uncertainties. Volume, modification, mix, and expansion flexibilities are the manufacturing flexibilities that businesses look for when they select their suppliers. In parallel, these flexibilities are often used as a supplier selection criterion in the literature. The supplier selection decision is a strategic issue for today’s businesses as a typical company is highly dependent on its suppliers to procure raw materials and parts. Sound supplier selection decision leads to competitive advantage because it is related to a positive relationship between buyer and supplier and reciprocal improvement of performance and trust between both parties. However, a literature review for this study showed a need for more empirical work on the relationship among types of flexibilities, supplier selection, performance improvement, long-term relationships, and trust. In order to fill the gap in this area, data was collected from 148 automotive companies operating in Turkey. For the data collection, the automotive industry was chosen as it is subjected to more uncertainties due to its connections to many other industries. The data were then analyzed using the structural equation model. The results showed a significant positive relationship between types of manufacturing flexibility and supplier selection. Also, positive relationships were found among supplier selection, performance, long-term relationships, and trust. Mediation and indirect effect analysis were also conducted. Long-term relationships and performance fully mediated the relationship between supplier selection and trust. An indirect relationship between supplier selection and trust was also found. The study results are expected to contribute to Sheth’s buyer-behavior model by introducing manufacturing flexibility, long-term relationship, performance, and trust to the model. Also, the study’s findings assist executives in making more informed decisions concerning supplier selection, depending on the level and types of flexibility they demand from their suppliers, performance, long-term relationships, and trust.

Our results show the financial flexibilities of American and Chinese firms are mainly driven by strengthening risk management and chasing investment opportunities respectively, the degree of financial flexibility has positively impact on firm performance, and the effect of financial flexibility driven by chasing investment opportunities on performance is more statistically significant than financial flexibility driven by strengthening risk management. Our results suggest that a firm can improve its performance if it retains a high flexibility degree driven by chasing investment opportunities.</p>

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to map the causal relations among various supply chain flexibility (SCF) dimensions having significant impact on the Indian personal hygiene industry. Design/methodology/approach The author(s) have gone through extensive literature review and extracted 22 SCF dimensions. After conducting field visits and expert interaction in the firm related to case industry, 11 major SCF dimensions that seem to have a significant amount of influence on supply chain performance of the firms were retained for further consideration. The author(s) have used decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) to establish initial causality and structural equation model (SEM) to investigate the contribution of different flexibility dimensions on overall SCF. Findings After DEMATEL analysis, three major SCF dimensions were considered for SEM modeling. The result shows that product flexibility and physical distribution flexibility have favorable influence on the SCF, while the demand management flexibility adversely impacts overall SCF. Practical implications The approach adopted in the study can help firms to determine and exercise the flexibility dimensions of a particular supply chain. The DEMATEL and SEM offer a facilitation to explain the causal relationship between the different dimensions to take long-term decisions and address the uncertainty in the demand and supply side. Originality/value This paper has made an attempt to evaluate the supply chain flexibilities, prioritize them and evaluate the relationship amongst these flexibilities and the degree to which they affect or are affected by one another in the Indian personal hygiene industry.

Abstract:

The categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive and the inherent regulatory incentives and implemented measures may overlap. Member States and national regulatory authorities should, therefore, carefully evaluate the interactions when implementing new forms of access to flexibilities or when enhancing existing ones. The evaluation of available evidence is thus directly linked to pricing, reimbursement and also to care management. Greater flexibility in dealing with the evidence requirements has been exercised in the past, but without consistency and certainly also when a lowering of the requirement level led to a financial advantage for the statutory health insurance (SHI). At the same time, there are also examples in which the clinical relevance of an intervention was so obvious that the G-BA used its room for manoeuvre in the interests of healthcare.

Abstract:
Traditional power grids are mainly based on centralized power generation and subsequent distribution. The increasing penetration of distributed renewable energy sources and the growing number of electrical loads is creating difficulties in balancing supply and demand and threatens the secure and efficient operation of power grids. At the same time, households hold an increasing amount of flexibility, which can be exploited by demand-side management to decrease customer cost and support grid operation. Compared to the collection of individual flexibilities, aggregation reduces optimization complexity, protects households’ privacy, and lowers the communication effort. In mathematical terms, each flexibility is modeled by a set of power profiles, and the aggregated flexibility is modeled by the Minkowski sum of individual flexibilities. As the exact Minkowski sum calculation is generally computationally prohibitive, various approximations can be found in the literature. The main contribution of this paper is a comparative evaluation of several approximation algorithms in terms of novel quality criteria, computational complexity, and communication effort using realistic data. Furthermore, we investigate the dependence of selected comparison criteria on the time horizon length and on the number of households. Our results indicate that none of the algorithms perform satisfactorily in all categories. Hence, we provide guidelines on the application-dependent algorithm choice. Moreover, we demonstrate a major drawback of some inner approximations, namely that they may lead to situations in which not using the flexibility is impossible, which may be suboptimal in certain situations.

Abstract:
Flexibility is more sensitive to structural damage than frequency or mode. Curvature matrix of change in flexibility is presented as a new index of nondestructive damage detection, which is derived from change in structural flexibilities calculated from before damaging and after damaging by means of difference calculation twice, firstly to columns, and then to rows. Therefore a new indicator called as δ Flexibility Curvature Matrix Diagonal (δFCMD) is constructed from the principal diagonal elements based on curvature matrix of change in flexibility. The numerical simulation examples indicate that the damage location and severity in structures, with single damage, multiple ones, slight ones and ones at the supports, can be detected efficiently for a cantilever beam, a fixed supported beam, a simply supported beams and so on by the indicator of δFCMD depending on only a few of lower order modes.

Abstract:
Flexibility monitoring is a vibration-based method for simplifying the detection of major underwater damage on offshore jacket platforms. Ambient vibrations are detected at each of the underwater framing levels relative to abovewater vibration in the fundamental sway and torsional modes. Derived are flexibility parameters which relate to the shear flexibilities of each framing bay and of the foundation. Great promise has been shown by laboratory and field testing. This paper presents a comprehensive sensitivity assessment for severance of diagonal members over a wide range of structural redundancy for generic platform configurations.
