Dupré, John. Human Nature. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198823650.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This sketch of an account of human nature begins with the claim that we should see humans as a kind of process, a life cycle, rather than as a kind of substance or thing. A particular advantage of such a process perspective is that it readily accommodates the developmental plasticity that has been an increasingly important concept in recent biological theory. Human behaviour, on this account, should be understood as providing adaptive and flexible responses to an unpredictable environment. It is, therefore, generally misguided to provide a standard account of human nature in terms of behaviour or behavioural dispositions. If there is such a thing as human nature, it is a uniquely refined propensity for novel and unpredictable behaviour.

Full text
Abstract:
Learning is an animal’s capacity to change behaviour, as the result of individual experience, so that it is better adapted to the animal’s physical and social environments. Learning helps to fine-tune behaviour in flexible ways that would be difficult to encode genetically. It is an inherent property of nervous systems in even the simplest animals. Memory is an animal’s capacity to retain learned information to influence future behaviour. ‘Learning and animal culture’ discusses both classical and operant conditioning; innate responses that do not require learning; social learning, which across generations leads to cultural traditions; and the use of tools, which is now known not to be a uniquely human ability.

Full text
Abstract:
Delving further into development, adaptation, and learning, this chapter considers the potential of reward-oriented optimization of behavior. Reinforcement learning (RL) is motivated from the Rescorla–Wagner model in psychology and behaviorism. Next, a detailed introduction to RL in artificial systems is provided. It is shown when and how RL works, but also current shortcomings and challenges are discussed. In conclusion, the chapter emphasizes that behavioral optimization and reward-based behavioral adaptations can be well-accomplished with RL. However, to be able to solve more challenging planning problems and to enable flexible, goal-oriented behavior, hierarchically and modularly structured models about the environment are necessary. Such models then also enable the pursuance of abstract reasoning and of thoughts that are fully detached from the current environmental state. The challenge remains how such models may actually be learned and structured.

New, Tim R. Insect behavior in conservation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797500.003.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
Some of the many ways in which understanding insect behavior can contribute to the conservation of threatened insect species, and complement the more widely acknowledged base of ecological knowledge, are outlined in a variety of different contexts to exemplify their importance and roles. Patterns of resource use by insects and their adaptability to environmental changes range from highly specific and non-flexible to the ability to adapt more readily, with many species of highest conservation concern linked with specializations that restrict their potential to change. Practical contexts discussed briefly include the discovery and use of resources, the problems of monitoring and assessing conservation priority and need, the options available as environments are changed, the difficulties of behavioral studies on rare and localized species, how behavior may link with vulnerability, and the integration of behavioral intricacies with insect conservation practice, helping to educate and encourage interest in this discipline.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecologists now recognize that the dynamics of populations, communities, and ecosystems are strongly affected by adaptive individual behaviors. Yet until now, we have lacked effective and flexible methods for modeling such dynamics. Traditional ecological models become impractical with the inclusion of behavior, and the optimization approaches of behavioral ecology cannot be used when future conditions are unpredictable due to feedbacks from the behavior of other individuals. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to state- and prediction-based theory, or SPT, a powerful new approach to modeling trade-off behaviors in contexts such as individual-based population models where feedbacks and variability make optimization impossible. This book features a wealth of examples that range from highly simplified behavior models to complex population models in which individuals make adaptive trade-off decisions about habitat and activity selection in highly heterogeneous environments. The book explains how SPT builds on key concepts from the state-based dynamic modeling theory of behavioral ecology, and how it combines explicit predictions of future conditions with approximations of a fitness measure to represent how individuals make good—not optimal—decisions that they revise as conditions change. The resulting models are realistic, testable, adaptable, and invaluable for answering fundamental questions in ecology and forecasting ecological outcomes of real-world scenarios.

Glannon, Walter. Behavior Control, Meaning, and Neuroscience. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190460723.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Neuroscience challenges our beliefs about agency and autonomy because it seems to imply that we have no control of our behavior: most brain processes are not transparent to us, we have no direct access to the efferent system, and we only experience the sensorimotor consequences of our unconscious motor plans. In this chapter, Walter Glannon argues that although unconscious processes drive many of our actions, this does not imply that conscious mental states have no causal role in our behavior and that we have no control over it. He argues that some degree of unconscious neural constraint on conscious mental states is necessary to modulate thought and action and promote flexible behavior and adaptability to environmental demands. He maintains that a nonreductive materialist account of the mind–brain relation makes it plausible to claim that mental states can cause changes in physical states of the brain.

Full text
Abstract:
Specific psychotherapies bring specific challenges with them. Engagement with cognitive behaviour therapy and its success depends upon how the individual’s cognitions are affected by cultures and how amenable these are for therapy. Similarly, family therapy carries with it different roles of different members across cultures, and not everyone’s role will be the same. Minority therapists may face potential difficulties while looking after patients from majority cultures. General principles of psychotherapy across cultures will apply but they may carry different meanings for each individual. It is essential that therapists are flexible enough to ensure the best patient engagement, and additional modifications may be required. Each of these therapies can be reductive, reconstructive, or supportive, and a mixture of more than one approach can be utilized. Assessment must explore very carefully needs and indications for therapy. In many cultures these words have very different meanings with personal and social expectations.

Abstract:
Andy Clark is a leading philosopher and cognitive scientist. The fruits of his work have been diverse and lasting. They have had an extraordinary impact throughout philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and robotics. The extended mind hypothesis, the power of parallel distributed processing, the role of language in opening up novel paths for thinking, the flexible interface between biological minds and artificial technologies, the significance of representation in explanations of intelligent behaviour, the promise of the predictive processing framework to unify the cognitive sciences: these are just some of the ideas explored in Clark’s work that have been picked up by many researchers and that have been contributing to intense debate across the sciences of mind and brain. This volume provides the first interdisciplinary, critical engagement with Clark’s work; it includes contributions of authors from several disciplines, offering a fresh perspective on key questions in the sciences of mind and brain.

Han, Chang Dae. Rheology and Processing of Polymeric Materials: Volume 1: Polymer Rheology. Oxford University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195187823.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Volume 1 presents first fundamental principles of the rheology of polymeric fluid including kinematics and stresses of a deformable body, the continuum theory for the viscoelasticity of flexible homogeneous polymeric liquids, the molecular theory for the viscoelasticity of flexible homogeneous polymeric liquids, and the experimental methods for the measurement of the rheological properties of poylmeric liquids. The materials presented are intended to set a stage for the subsequent chapters by introducing the basic concepts and principles of rheology, from both phenomenological and molecular perspectives, ofstructurally simple flexible and homogeneous polymeric liquids. Next, this volume presents the rheological behavior of structurally complex polymeric materials including miscible polymer blends, block copolymers, liquid-crystalline polymers, thermoplastic polyurethanes, immiscible polymer blends, perticulare-filled polymers, organoclay nanocomposites, molten polymers with dissolved gas, and thermosts.
