Abstract:
Context Exclosure fences are widely used to reintroduce locally extinct animals. These fences function either as permanent landscape-scale areas free from most predators, or as small-scale temporary acclimatisation areas for newly translocated individuals to be ‘soft released’ into the wider landscape. Existing research can help managers identify the best design for their exclosure fence, but there are currently no methods available to help identify the optimal location for these exclosures in the local landscape (e.g. within a property). Aims We outline a flexible decision-support tool that c

A multidisciplinary analysis of vertical tail buffeting and buffeting alleviation of generic fighter aircraft is conducted. This complex multidisciplinary problem is solved for the fluid dynamics, structure dynamics, fluid-structure coupling, and grid deformation using a computing environment that controls the temporal synchronization of the data transfer between the analysis modules. The generic fighter aircraft consists of a sharp-edged delta wing with an aspect ratio of one and a swept-back, flexible, vertical twin tail with a taper ratio of 0.23. Twin streamwise fences are located at the 3

The Mw 7.1 Darfield (Canterbury) earthquake of 4 September 2010 (NZST) was the first earthquake in New Zealand to produce ground-surface fault rupture since the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake. Displacement is predominantly dextral strike-slip, averaging ~2.5 m, with maxima of ~5 m along the central part of the rupture. Maximum vertical displacement is ~1.5 m, but generally < 0.75 m.

The paper presents a proposal for a method for determining the geometrical dimensions of a rotary flexible fence used in the process of automatic sorting of small-sized objects transported on conveyor belts. The method consists of three stages: 1 – determination of the preferred outline and material of the fence, 2 – optimal parameters determination of the sorting process, 3 – dimensions selection for the preferred geometry of the fence with reference to the mass of scraped objects and the sorting process parameters. The stages adopted allow to select the optimal mass-spring-damper characteris

When floating structure with internal fluid compartment is close to other structures, the multibody interaction problem needs to be addressed in addition to the internal fluid influence. Furthermore, shallow water effects become important, especially when the gap between the floating structure and the sea floor is small. These issues are encountered when designing a novel floating oil storage facilities in nearshore area. To investigate these issues, floating models under 1:50 scale are built to perform model tests.
