Abstract:
This thesis covers a variety of inter-related scheduling and layout issues encountered in flexible manufacturing systems. The principal focus is upon systems which adopt the commonly implemented loop layout configuration. A pivotal idea behind the work is that products must revisit machines during their manufacture. The work encompasses both computational and theoretical results. The computational work consists of testing both new and standard heuristic and local search techniques on two strongly NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problems, one related to layout and the other to single machine

We formulate the problem as a Mixed Integer Linear Program and show that it is NP-hard in the strong sense.
