Wijers, Jean Paul, Isabel Amaral, William Hanson, Bengt-Arne Hulleman, and Diana Mather. Protocol to Manage Relationships Today. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463724159.

Full text
Abstract:
Protocol to Manage Relationships Today explains the contemporary value of protocol, not only for monarchies or diplomatic institutes, but for any non-profit or for-profit organisation. This book presents modern protocol as a tool to build strong, authentic networks of reciprocal relationships. When used effectively protocol can: - Increase the effect of the networking activities of an organisation. Protocol gives a professional structure to relationship management, to achieve access to the 'right' networks and a reciprocal relationship with the most valued stakeholders. - Deepen relationships. In our world there is so much focus on pragmatism in building relationships - protocol focuses on the common ground to gain value. - Be used as a valuable tool in a post COVID-19 era, where the need for space and time to build real and authentic relationships is well understood. The book defines how tested values perfectly fit in today's society, where modern organisations want to build effective relationships and communities. This book is focused on developing an increasingly vital expertise for professionals who deal with complex relationship management issues on a strategic and tactical operational level. They come from different fields, such as government institutions, non-profit organisations and commercial environments. This book also gives protocol officers a contemporary approach towards the application of protocol. It is not designed as a complete guide to all the rules of protocol, but it describes how to translate the context into a tailor-made protocol for each meeting or event. The book explains protocol as a flexible method to handle unique situations. Protocol is presented on four levels: the 'why' of protocol; the strategic and tactical level; the practical implementation; and the execution of protocol. Protocol to Manage Relationships Today is written by Europe's foremost protocol experts with collective years of experience with the management of networking meetings and events at the highest level.

Kedhar, Anusha. Flexible Bodies. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190840136.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Flexible Bodies charts the emergence of British South Asian dance as a distinctive dance genre. Analyzing dance works, dance films, rehearsals, workshops, and touring alongside immigration policy, arts funding initiatives, citizenship discourse, and global economic conditions, author Anusha Kedhar traces shifts in British South Asian dance from 1990s Cool Britannia multiculturalism to fractious race relations in the wake of the July 7, 2005, terrorist attacks to economic fallout from the 2008 global financial crisis, and, finally, to anti-immigrant rhetoric leading up to the Brexit referendum in 2016. Drawing on more than a decade of ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with dancers, in-depth choreographic analysis of major dance works, and the author’s own lived experiences as a professional dancer in London, Flexible Bodies tells the story of British South Asian dancers and the creative ways in which they negotiate the demands of neoliberal, multicultural dance markets through an array of flexible bodily practices, including agility, versatility, mobility, speed, and risk-taking. Attending to pain, injury, and other restrictions on movement, it also reveals the bodily limits of flexibility. Theorizing flexibility as material and metaphor, the book argues that flexibility is both a tool of labor exploitation and a bodily tactic that British South Asian dancers exploit to navigate volatile economic and political conditions. With its unique focus on the everyday aspects of dancing and dance-making Flexible Bodies honors the lives and labor of dancers and their contributions to a distinct and dynamic sector of British dance.

Menary, Richard. Keeping Track with Things. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198769811.003.0016.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter begins with an evolutionary account of tracking systems, from simple detection systems to complex decoupled and highly flexible tracking systems. The important mediator is the role of the environment in providing the complexity, translucency, and hostility that produces the evolutionary pressures that result in more complex tracking systems. An evolutionary platform is provided for how modern humans could have come to innovate epistemic tracking tools (ETTs) for keeping track of salient features of the environment. Three examples of ETTs in action are given, ranging from highly iconic and contextual learning tools—such as the Mattang—to highly abstract and decoupled conventional symbol systems. Finally, it is argued that ETTs are compatible with a responsibilist-reliabilism since their correct deployment requires epistemic diligence and the reliable functioning of the tool itself. As such, a framework for understanding and exploring how we keep track with things has been given.

Full text
Abstract:
This introductory chapter sets out the conceptual and methodological rationale for the book. The chapter reviews the field and places this new approach within the context of current leadership research. The Leadership Capital Index (LCI) builds on advances in understanding of how to track and assess political leadership. It offers the concept of “leadership capital,” as an aggregate of authority that reaches across the traditional divide between structure and agency through a flexible analytical tool. The LCI offers a comprehensive yet parsimonious and easily applicable ten-point matrix to examine leadership authority over time and in different political contexts. The chapter sets out how this tool is utilized in the examination of the eleven-country case studies to better understand and explain the “puzzles” of contemporary political leadership.

Full text
Abstract:
Memory in early modern Europe closely related to the knowledge of what was ‘customary’. The term ‘custom’ was used to describe both cultural, often local, habits, and usages that had acquired legal power, and its status derived from its being ancient and its being common knowledge. Custom was both an elite tool to keep the poor in place, and the best strategy for poor people to defend themselves against unwanted changes. In the course of the early modern period the status of custom changed. First, codification of custom rendered it less flexible than it had once been. Secondly, the emergence of new intellectual tools led to more scepticism about the past as a stable source of authority. Finally, as a consequence of contact with non-Europeans, there emerged new ideas on the development of human culture, in which the abandoning of custom came to be seen as a hallmark of civility.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents several challenges raised by the process of enforcement of European soft law. It briefly reviews various strategies to determine what enforcement could mean in a soft law context. The chapter looks at a series of examples which demonstrate how soft law is enforced through flexible, but also more coercive means, before concluding that ensuring the enforcement of soft law is done through hybrid methods which only reflect the hybridity of regulation in Europe. The chapter in addition shows how hybridity of regulation is reflected in the hybridity of enforcement mechanisms, with soft law itself becoming an enforcement tool for higher, binding norms, or values. Finally, this chapter reflects on whether, in the coercive enforcement of soft law, fundamental Rule of Law values are still preserved.

Adler, M. Properties and potential of protein–DNA conjugates for analytic applications. Edited by A. V. Narlikar and Y. Y. Fu. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199533053.013.25.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines the properties of protein-DNA conjugates and their potential for analytic applications. It begins with a discussion of DNA as a rigid construction tool for protein networks, reducing its functionality to the molecular equivalent of a steel bar in 'large-scale' architecture. It then describes DNA functionality in protein-DNA conjugates, like specific recognition of nucleotide sequences or its unique use as an amplification template. It also considers a range of applications for protein-DNA conjugates, including the use of artificial DNA-protein nanostructures as supramolecular building blocks and DNA-antibody conjugates for ultrasensitive antigen detection. Finally, it evaluates DNA-directed immobilization of protein-DNA adaptor molecules for flexible protein arrays. It shows that protein-DNA conjugates can be used as analytical targets for challenging and calibrating the properties of high-resolution atomic force microscopy, as well as analytical reagents for ultrasensitive target detection in immuno-PCR and related techniques.
