Flexography is a modern version of letterpress printing. This traditional method of printing can be used on almost any type of substrate, including corrugated cardboard, cellophane, plastic, label stock, fabric and metallic film. Flexography uses quick-drying, semi-liquid inks. In this new age of digital printing, flexography holds its own in the areas of large orders, particularly of packaging products and labeling. Flexographic printing uses flexible photopolymer printing plates wrapped around rotating cylinders on a web press. The inked plates have a slightly raised image and rotate at high

Since its invention in ancient times, relief printing, commonly called flexography, has been used to mass-produce artifacts ranging from decorative graphics to printed media. Now, higher-resolution flexography is essential to manufacturing low-cost, large-area printed electronics. However, because of contact-mediated liquid instabilities and spreading, the resolution of flexographic printing using elastomeric stamps is limited to tens of micrometers. Solid lines are essential to enable printing of conducting tracks for various electronic applications. In the flexographic printing process, the behaviour of the printing plate plays a vital role in how ink is printed onto the substrate as it deforms when passing through the printing nip. This deformation is dependent on the material properties of the plate, the geometry of the lines and the pressure within the printing nip. These will influence the printed track width and the ink film thickness, which will affect the electrical performance of the printed conductors. This thesis will focus on

Experimental techniques have been combined with finite element models of individual dots to quantify plate deformation as it passes through the printing nip. Dot profiles for three line rulings and two plate thicknesses have been quantified, which showed that dot area on the plate is generally less than the nominal coverage. Dot depth decreased as coverage and line ruling increased, indicating that the line ruling affects the shoulder angle of the dot. Finite element techniques
