Abstract:
Abstract. Although elevation data are globally available and used in many existing hydrological models, their information content is still underexploited. Topography is closely related to geology, soil, climate and land cover. As a result, it may reflect the dominant hydrological processes in a catchment. In this study, we evaluated this hypothesis through four progressively more complex conceptual rainfall-runoff models. The first model (FLEXL) is lumped, and it does not make use of elevation data. The second model (FLEXD) is semi-distributed with different parameter sets for different units. This model uses elevation data indirectly, taking spatially variable drivers into account. The third model (FLEXT0), also semi-distributed, makes explicit use of topography information. The structure of FLEXT0 consists of four parallel components representing the distinct hydrological function of different landscape elements. These elements were determined based on a topography-based landscape classification approach. The fourth model (FLEXT) has the same model structure and parameterization as FLEXT0 but uses realism constraints on parameters and fluxes. All models have been calibrated and validated at the catchment outlet. Additionally, the models were evaluated at two sub-catchments. It was found that FLEXT0 and FLEXT perform better than the other models in nested sub-catchment validation and they are therefore better spatially transferable. Among these two models, FLEXT performs better than FLEXT0 in transferability. This supports the following hypotheses: (1) topography can be used as an integrated indicator to distinguish between landscape elements with different hydrological functions; (2) FLEXT0 and FLEXT are much better equipped to represent the heterogeneity of hydrological functions than a lumped or semi-distributed model, and hence they have a more realistic model structure and parameterization; (3) the soft data used to constrain the model parameters and fluxes in FLEXT are useful for improving model transferability. Most of the precipitation on the forested hillslopes evaporates, thus generating relatively little runoff.

Abstract:
Flextime, a work schedule that permits flexible starting and quitting times, has gained wide currency as a partial solution to conflicts between work and family life. This article aims to review the existing research regarding the advantages and disadvantages of flextime to both employers and employees; to evaluate the effects of flextime on resolving work/family conflicts; and to establish future programmatic, research, and policy directions regarding flextime. Research indicates that no compelling case can be made for flextime solely on the grounds of employers' conventional concerns with organizational effectiveness, organizational membership, or job attitudes. Research reveals, further, that flextime is beneficial in resolving work/family conflicts, but not as beneficial as often hoped. Future research should include the following: (a) greater sensitivity than is currently available regarding the use of, not just access to, flextime; (b) more attention to the needs of different subgroups as defined by stage in life cycle and family type; and (c) the use of dependent measures that would assess the effect of flextime in terms of quality as well as quantity of family time. We think it likely that the better the research, the more compelling will be the evidence for the effectiveness of flextime.

Abstract:
It has been suggested that managers of organizations believe that the implementation of flextime can influence outcomes ranging from job satisfaction and morale to relations with co-workers and spouses. Specifically, managers assume that implementing flextime is a simple process and that productivity will be increased due to its implementation. The purpose of this paper is to propose that the advantages which are commonly associated with the implementation of a flextime system have not been found in research studies on flextime. It is proposed that if an organization decides to implement flextime, it should be done so with the realistic expectation that it will not magically cure existing problems not previously addressed by those who make decisions in the organization. In addition, the role of managers in flextime implementation is discussed: managers must assist with the employees' adjustment to a flextime schedule by administering programs such as realistic job previews and, at a minimum, they should seek an awareness of the potential positive and negative outcomes which may occur with the implementation of a flextime program.

Abstract:
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been used since the Second World War to identify “friend or foe” aircrafts. It has become an enabling wireless technology that is widely used in a number of application areas, such as product tracking through manufacturing and assembly, inventory control, and supply chain management (SCM). By 2006, Wal-Mart used RFID for all of its suppliers. The use of RFID in supply chain networks has allowed Wal-Mart to create value through greater visibility in its networks, higher product velocity, reduce human error and labor cost, and more efficient inventory management, which led to the achievement of Quick Response (QR) and improved Customer Relationship Management (CRM) in the supply chain. However, RFID system challenges and uncertain Return-On-Investment (ROI) must be overcome to fully achieve these objectives. This paper introduces RFID technology and its key components and concepts, and presents an RFID middleware solution called FlexRFID that achieves the maximum benefits of RFID technology independently of the interested backend applications. This paper illustrates how RFID technology is used to solve the main problems in SCM, the advantages and key issues when implementing RFID in SCM networks, and the relationship between RFID and the main SCM processes.

Abstract:
The advancement of telecommunication and digital technology allows employees to work flextime. This option is still perceived differently by many companies because studies of the effects of working flextime are scarce and still being debated. This study aims to continue previous research on the benefits of using flextime for affective well-being and to further see its role in the contextual performance (CP) of employees of PT A. The use of flextime is defined as the extent to which employees can alter their starting and finish times, break frequency and break time duration in 1 (one) working day. Contextual performance is the frequency of employees performing behaviors that support the organization socially and psychologically in the implementation of the company's main functions. Affective well-being refers to the frequency and intensity of positive / negative emotions and moods of participants in the past 1 (one) month. Work-nonwork boundaries refer to behaviors done to separate employees' mental (psychological) state between roles at work and at home. Participants in this study were 323 employees. Path analysis test results using SPSS states that the implementation of flextime plays a role in employee CP. This means that the more often employees work flextime, the better their CP will be, and vice versa. Some important findings and differences with previous research are explained in the conclusions, including a highlight on the cultural differences of respondents. Further research can utilize samples with more specific work units, and / or analyze based on other forms of work flexibility (flexplace and temporal flexibility).

Abstract:
AbstractBackgroundPeople with Parkinson disease (PD) are twice as likely to develop flexed truncal posture as the general older population. Little is known about the mechanisms responsible beyond associations with age, axial motor impairments, and disease severity.ObjectiveThe objective was to explore: (1) the associations of the nonmotor impairments of PD with flexed posture, and (2) the relationships of flexed posture with activity limitations.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study.MethodsSeventy people with PD participated. Posture was measured in standing as the distance between the seventh cervical vertebra and a wall. Nonmotor impairments (cognition, depression, pain, fatigue, and proprioception) and activity performance (upper limb activity, bed transfers, respiratory function, and speech volume) were variously assessed using objective measures and self-report questionnaires. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to ascertain relationships between nonmotor impairments and truncal posture, and between truncal posture and activities.ResultsGreater disease severity, greater axial impairment, poorer spinal proprioception, greater postural fatigue, and male sex were significantly associated with flexed truncal posture. The multivariate model containing these factors in addition to age explained 30% of the variability in flexed truncal posture, with male sex and axial motor impairment continuing to make independent contributions. A significant association was found between greater flexed truncal posture and poorer upper limb activity performance and respiratory function.LimitationsA limitation to this study was that participants had mild-to-moderate disease severity.ConclusionsSpinal proprioception and postural fatigue were the only nonmotor impairments to make significant contributions to flexed posture. Given the negative influence of flexed posture on upper limb activity and respiratory function, interventions targeting spinal proprioception and postural awareness should be considered for people with PD who might develop flexed posture.

Abstract:
How do national-level work–life balance policies shape the role of flextime in maternal labor market re-entry after childbirth? It is well known that such policies influence the adoption, provision, and support of flexible work arrangements by organizations, but whether they shape the relevance of these arrangements for workers has been neglected in past research. This article analyzes whether mothers’ and partners’ flextime facilitates maternal labor market re-entry after childbirth in Germany, where family policy reforms have been implemented in the last two decades. Event history analysis based on German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) data from the years 2003–2013 revealed that mothers were more likely to re-enter the labor market if they had used flextime before childbirth. However, this effect existed only before the implementation of family policy reforms, namely the introduction of parental leave in 2007 and the expansion of public childcare. Moreover, the use of flextime before childbirth did not encourage mothers to maintain previous work hours (the legal right to work part time has existed in Germany since 2001). Partners’ use of flextime before childbirth was found to be less relevant for mothers’ return to work after childbirth. The analysis indicates that generous national-level work–life balance policies can diminish the effectiveness of organizational work–life balance policies for mothers’ employment behavior.

Abstract:
Degenerative osteoarthritis is the consequence of impact force applied to articular cartilage that results in surface fissuring. Soft cushions and flexed posture are two important factors to reduce the impact force; however, no quantitative information of how soft should the cushion be to prevent the injury and the mechanism of force attenuation of knee joint at neutral and flexed posture was not well documented yet. The objective of current study is hence to find the quantitative shock attenuation of knee joint using different stiffness of cushions when the knee is at neutral posture and flexed posture. A “drop-tower type” impact apparatus was used for testing. Nineteen fresh porcine knee joints were divided into two posture groups, i.e. neutral and flexed posture. All specimens were tested using stiff, medium, and soft cushions. The axial reaction force, anteroposterior shear force, and flexion bending moment were recorded for analysis. We found the flexed posture decreased the axial reaction force and anterior shear force but increased the flexion bending moment. The effect of stiffness of cushions on the mechanical response of knee joint during impact loading was significant for neutral posture but not for flexed posture.

"Effect of Cranial Flexion of Pelvic Limbs on Interlaminar Length of the Lumbosacral Space in Sternally and Laterally Recumbent Juvenile Duroc and Adult Yucatan Pigs." Abstract:
Epidural puncture in swine is technically challenging. Several combinations of limb and body positions have been suggested to increase lumbosacral interlaminar space (LSS) and lumbosacral angle (LSA). This study investigated whether cranial hyperflexion of pelvic limbs increased LSS and LSA in laterally and sternally recumbent juvenile Duroc and adult Yucatan pigs and assessed which position produced the largest LSS. Juvenile Duroc (n = 7) and adult Yucatan (n = 7) pigs were euthanized and randomly placed in 4 positions: sternal with neutral limbs, sternal with cranially hyperflexed limbs, lateral with neutral limbs, and lateral with hyperflexed limbs. LSS and LSA were measured on transverse axial CT images of the spine and compared by using multivariate ANOVA and the Student t test. In both age groups, LSS was greater in lateral flexed (juvenile, 7.0 ± 0.7 mm; adult, 15.9 ± 1.1 mm) and sternal flexed (juvenile, 7.5 ± 1 mm; adult, 17.1 ± 1.1 mm) positions than in lateral neutral (juvenile, 5.4 ± 0.9 mm; adult, 9.6 ± 1.6 mm) position. In addition, in both age groups, LSS and LSA in lateral neutral position were smaller than lateral flexed, sternal neutral, and sternal flexed positions. In adults, LSS was greater in lateral flexed and sternal flexed than in sternal neutral position. Hyperflexion of pelvic limbs increases LSS and LSA in sternally recumbent adult Yucatan pigs and laterally recumbent adult Yucatan and juvenile Duroc swine. Increased LSS from positioning pigs with pelvic limbs flexed in sternal or lateral recumbence may facilitate epidural puncture compared with neutral limb positioning.

Abstract:
The research evaluated the effectiveness of flextime in achieving and sustaining work-family balance among male and female hospitality workers in Taiwan. Flextime’s effectiveness in supporting work-family balance has implications on the achievement of organizational outcomes, particularly employee commitment and turnover intention. The study applied quantitative research design to test three major hypotheses and sub-hypotheses by using evidence obtained from a survey of managers and employees of hospitality firms in Taiwan. The evidence confirmed all the hypotheses. Flextime is effective in achieving and sustaining work-family balance. Work-life balance enhances employee commitment and dissuades turnover intention. Hospitality firms in Taiwan need to consider flextime as a long-term or continuous strategy as well as consider improvements relative to changes in the condition and needs of employees.

Abstract:
Increasing regulatory demands are forcing the pharmaceutical industry to invest its available resources carefully. This is especially challenging for small- and middle-sized companies. Computer simulation software like FlexSim allows one to explore variations in production processes without the need to interrupt the running process. Here, we applied a discrete-event simulation to two approved film-coated tablet production processes. The simulations were performed with FlexSim (FlexSim Deutschland—Ingenieurbüro für Simulationsdienstleistung Ralf Gruber, Kirchlengern, Germany). Process visualization was done using Cmap Tools (Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, Pensacola, FL, USA), and statistical analysis used MiniTab® (Minitab GmbH, Munich, Germany). The most critical elements identified during model building were the model logic, operating schedule, and processing times. These factors were graphically and statistically verified. To optimize the utilization of employees, three different shift systems were simulated, thereby revealing the advantages of two-shift and one-and-a-half-shift systems compared to a one-shift system. Without the need to interrupt any currently running production processes, we found that changing the shift system could save 50–53% of the campaign duration and 9–14% of the labor costs. In summary, we demonstrated that FlexSim, which is mainly used in logistics, can also be advantageously implemented for modeling and optimizing pharmaceutical production processes.
