Abstract:
Two estranged sisters, Liza and Nikki, travel to the seaside town of Hermanus. Liza hopes that a summer spent together will restore their once close relationship. Nikki is just looking for some fun. Then Liza disappears from the family holiday house. Messages left show that she's been abducted, kidnapped by someone who has no idea that Liza desperately needs her medication. In a country plagued by violence against women, Nikki, her parents, and the local police need to work together against the clock to save Liza. If only they could trust each other. Nikki is drawn deeper into a situation she cannot control or run away from as she tries to find her sister before it’s too late. Toxic family history emerges and tensions mount as the kidnappers demand a large ransom. Liza’s health is deteriorating fast and Nikki’s efforts to make amends are met with doubt and hostility. Will Nikki be able to help her sister before it’s too late?

Abstract:
Data analysis and predictive analytics today are driven by large scale dis- tributed deployments of complex pipelines, guiding data cleaning, model training and evaluation. A wide range of systems and tools provide the basic abstractions for building such complex pipelines for offline data processing, however, there is an increasing demand for providing support for incremental models over unbounded streaming data. In this work, we focus on the prob- lem of modelling such a pipeline framework and providing algorithms that build on top of basic abstractions, fundamental to stream processing. We design a streaming machine learning pipeline as a series of stages such as model building, concept drift detection and continuous evaluation. We build our prototype on Apache Flink, a distributed data processing system with streaming capabilities along with a state-of-the-art implementation of a varia- tion of Vertical Hoeffding Tree (VHT), a distributed decision tree classification algorithm as a proof of concept. Furthermore, we compare our version of VHT with the current state-of- the-art implementations on distributed data processing systems in terms of performance and accuracy. Our experimental results on real-world data sets show significant performance benefits of our pipeline while maintaining low classification error. We believe that this pipeline framework can offer a good baseline for a full-fledged implementation of various streaming algorithms that can work in parallel.

El-Ashmouni, Marwa M. "Imagining the alchemy of shrinkage between the real and the ideal : a resilient design in evolution in Flint, Michigan." Virtual Press, 2007. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1379440.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to improve the economic problems of the homeless people, either scrappers or squatters living in abject poverty, in the shrinking city of Flint by trying to balance the social problems of the city. This balance in the social life will not be real unless there is a kind of resilience architecture that is able to adjust and be adjusted to that degradation in the social and economic conditions in the shrinking cities. The resilience architecture, from which the self built spirit may spur, may be the only way to give the poor their lost dignity. The specific research deals with the problem of shrinkage in the Rust Belt cities in the USA and the means of its improvement by readopting three terms: evolution, resilience, and alchemy from a social perspective. Suggesting a resilient architecture design project in the particular city of Flint, Michigan relies on the large number of the homeless people living in these devastated places.Shrinking cities, living a state of flux all time, are much more insecure and weighty. The potential profound role of the architecture profession to work with the poor societies, and assist them in the execution of their spiritual needs, relies upon some of the key questions: could architects be a reason in building a resistant community? What kind of architecture do we collectively want to combat the degradation of the world? The key question is: Will architecture able to activate this self built spirit, by reusing some of the leftover materials, in Flint? In this context, I will investigate the architects' ability to intervene by providing an implementation proposal designed to use the city materials. This intervention of the architect will be effective when the potentials of those homeless are empowered. Therefore, I suggest an initial idea for a particular design proposal titled `Scrap and Build; On Our Own Village' that could be used as a catalyst for self builders' spirit. The project is seeking a resilient new vision for the future of shrinking cities, which necessitates surpassing the barriers which exist in the real complexities in these cities' lives.

Abstract:
Since its inception, the 4-H program has been through many transitions, and has been constantly challenged to show its benefits to youth. Additionally, funding from 4-H came from multiple supporters resulting in the need for 4-H to show reasons for support. The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of Montana 4-H youth related to their leadership life skills and to determine the significant factors that influenced the development of those life skills. The population consisted of 2008 Montana 4-H Congress participants and 2007-2008 Montana 4-H Ambassadors. The survey instrument consisted of three sections: selected demographic information and 4-H participation, involvement in 4-H activities and leadership roles, and the Youth Leadership Life Skills Development Scale (YLLSDS). YLLSDS was a valid and reliable instrument developed by Seevers, Dormody and Clason (1995). Data were collected during the Montana 4-H Congress and survey was mailed to Montana 4-H Ambassadors. The data were entered into Microsoft Excel and analyzed using SPSS. The responses to the YLLSDS with the highest means were \"have good manners,\" \"get along with others\", and \"show a responsible attitude.\" Analysis revealed that Montana 4-H Ambassadors had statistically significant higher YLLSDS scores than those who had never been an Ambassador. The factors with the greatest influence on leadership life skills development were gender, 4-H Districts, and participation in the Ambassador program. Involvement in 4-H activities predicted 6.9% of the variation in YLLSDS scores and involvement in leadership roles accounted for 7.3% of the variation in YLLSDS scores. Leadership life skills were gained through the Ambassador program, partaking in leadership roles and involvement in leadership activities. The research attested to the effectiveness of the Ambassador program. Further research was recommended to determine which activities, leadership roles and aspects of the Ambassador program were most successful at building life skills. Further research to determine the significant variation between 4-H Districts would be useful. The study supported 4-H as a successful youth organization that responsibly teaches youth leadership life skills.

Abstract:
Public housing in today's society is an accumulation of truths. These truths are a construct of institutions that are vastly different and sometimes conflicting but control and arrange life within the community. Public housing has transformed into a place of actual and perceived boundaries which constrict the control residents possess within the housing and its surroundings. The lack of control socially segregates, isolates, and stigmatizes residents as well as creates a dangerous environment. The residents' exclusion from outside communities prohibits them from functioning cohesively within society. With the objective of reducing crime rates, this thesis focuses on the physical environment's ability to transform the strict boundaries which separate public and private space within public housing. Blurring the influence of existing private spaces will give residents the ability to express territoriality within the public housing complex. A new order will be generated through localized interrelationships of private and public spaces. This environmental transformation will give residents among the public housing a sense of territoriality and the ability for self surveillance within their community. Inducing modes of habitation found outside of the public housing paradigm will return much needed control of space to the residents within the community.

Graves-Brown, C. A. "The ideological significance of flint in Dynastic Egypt." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1306709/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a little understood aspect of Dynastic Egypt—that of the ideology of flint. Ideology is defined as the way flint is thought of rather than used. This study is unique in examining long term chronological changes in flint ideology against the background of increased metal use, and in using together text, iconography, and archaeology: studies of Egyptian ideology traditionally privilege text. Metaphor theory is employed as an important tool to aid this study. While metaphor is frequently used in Egyptological studies of Egyptian religion, its use is rarely explicit. The dataset brings together unpublished artefacts in British museum collections; a first hand analysis of lithics from Panhesy’s house at Amarna; finds cards from recent excavations at Memphis; and textual sources, several of which have not been considered before in relation to the ideology of flint; as well as published data on Egyptian lithic material. Chronological changes in ideology surrounding flint during the Bronze and Iron Ages, a time of flint decline, are considered. Because the nature of flint decline in Egypt has been assumed rather than known, I attempt to quantify the process. Conclusions show that the ideology of flint was far from static but only loosely related to the kinetic decline of flint. Flint is shown to be connected with the goddesses who are the Eye of Re, with Re himself, with snakes and lions. New facets of flint ideology are uncovered, including the connection of the material with the northern sky and the link between the treatment of New Kingdom Theban flint concretions and the religious landscape of the area.

Abstract:

This dissertation develops an approach to institutional critique that re-works Porter, Sullivan, Blythe, Grabill, and Miles’ foundational configuration. This project argues that John Dewey’s concept of democratic communication articulated in his debate with Walter Lippmann provides a useful heuristic for developing democratic communicative practices that allow citizens and experts to communicate with one another about technical issues such as water quality and safety. Through an analysis of Michigan’s emergency manager law, the relationship between citizens and experts that exposed the crisis, and the Flint Water Advisory Task Force’s Final Report, this dissertation establishes that citizens must participate in technical decision-making and makes pragmatic suggestions to increase citizens’ meaningful participation. This project concludes with theoretical and pedagogical implications of a participatory institutional critique.

Abstract:

Pender, John Anthony. "Padraig Flynn: A Case Study in Political Policy Entrepreneurship?" Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.491717.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to explore the ways in which individual European Union Commissioners may be capable of exercising agenda-setting and/or supranational political and policy entrepreneurship. The prevailing orthodoxy posits that in very limited circumstances the Commission and the President of the Commission may act as supranational entrepreneurs. The most significant example ofEU supranational entrepreneurialism centres on the activities and achievements of former Commission President Jacques Delors. Intergovernmentalist scholars dispute and keenly contest this leadership label. Littl~ or no attention has been paid to the supranational political and policy entrepreneurship and wider political leadership potential of individual Commissioners. Absence of systematic research on this area is the result of a general reluctance of European political science to adopt leadership approaches to the study of decision-making. Strategic relationist accounts on the nature of agency-structure discourses facilitated a methodologiCal approach incorporating elements of 'rational institutionalism' and social constructivism. The leadership of Commissioner Padraig Flynn, as a member of the Delors III and Santer administrations - his portfolio, Social Affairs and Employment, is widely held to be one of the most supranationally resistant EU policy spheres - forms a modest case study that seeks to explore the extent to which individual Commissioners may provide supranational political and policy entrepreneurship. This is achieved in the following way. A literature review of the Commission, supranational political and policy entrepreneurship and leadership· is provided. The findings of which are distilled into two typologies geared towards establishing whether, or not, individual Commissioners can exercise political and policy entrepreneurship. These are tested by posing three related research questions around the extent to which previous political experiences, personal skills, beliefs and ideological construction ------'--------------may-iiifluence policy-making ana-leadersliip~ylesinBrusseKcAcase--studyor-Flynn's--~----- contribution to the emergence of the European Employment Strategy seeks to demonstrate the nature ofh~s political leadership and policy entrepreneurship. The findings of this research suggest that leadership personas developed in national and intergovernmental contexts are relatively resistant to change and that pre-existing belief systems and ideological constructions are reflected in supranational or intergovernmental policy preferences. Individual Commissioners' may adopt strategic approaches to policymaking and may be capable of exercising political and policy entrepreneurship. Further comparative and longitudinal research is necessary. . ii Supplied by The British Library - 'The world's knowledge'

Etheostoma spectabile, E. punctulatum, and Cottus carolinae were sampled Mar., 1983, - Feb., 1984, in Flint Creek, Oklahoma. Immature E. spectabile ate primarily microcrustaceans, while mature fishes relied more on mayflies and amphipods. Juvenile E. punctulatum fed upon mayflies, amphipods, and Asellus. Mature E. punctulatum ate primarily mayflies, and other relatively larger prey. Cottus carolinae consumed chironomids almost exclusively in Jan. - Feb., 1984, while mayflies were predominant the remainder of the year. No significant habitat partitioning between the two darters, and seasonal habitat segregation between C. carolinae and the two darters was found. Dietary overlap between the darters was significantly correlated (p<0.0005) to differences in x prey sizes.

Flann O’Brien’s novel, The Third Policeman , consists of many seemingly unrealistic events, thus sharing similarities with the fantastic piece, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The events and characters within O’Brien’s storyline obtain no source of reason, leading to another wonderland. However, if particular components of the novel are studied further, and in relation to the aftereffects of trauma, O’Brien’s work is more realistic and logical than what is fantastically portrayed on the text’s surface.

Abstract:
Legionella pneumophila and other opportunistic pathogens of drinking water pose important problems at the interface of biology, environmental engineering, public health, and governance. In this thesis, I explore the molecular mechanisms permitting survival of L. pneumophila in built water systems is the nature of its physiology under different conditions and different life-phases. In the first chapter, I discuss how various physiological states of L. pneumophila affect the propensity for survival and virulence in relation to drinking water environments. This literature review should provide a perspective important for designing controlled laboratory experiments rooted in a robust understanding of how phenotype dictates experimental results. In the second chapter, I describe sequence and phylogenetic analyses performed to investigate the presence of a type 1 secretion system and virulence factor throughout the Legionella genus. While this system was previously believed to be conserved to L. pneumophila, our analysis indicates that this system is well-distributed throughout the Legionella genus, blurring the lines between "pathogenic" and "non-pathogenic" species. In the third chapter, I report the secretome of endemic Flint, Michigan L. pneumophila in corrosive water, simulating the environmental impact of the Flint Water Crisis on local L. pneumophila populations. Our results from this study have expanded the secretome of L. pneumophila, provided insight on mechanisms it may employ to resist stress in water, and created several novel lines of inquiry at the merging frontier of biochemistry and environmental engineering.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its discovery in 1984, psychological investigators have continued to explore the Flynn Effect, the phenomenon of consistent and secular IQ gains within industrialized nations approximating 0.3 points per year. The most contentious debate within this field of research surrounds the purported cause of the Effect, and yet the research literature lacks a synthesis of the leading causal theories and the evidence supporting them. The principal hypothesized causal mechanisms – psychometric artifact, educational intervention, environmental changes, nutrition, genetics, gene-environment interaction model, medical improvements, and the multiplicity hypothesis – are reviewed and analyzed within the larger breadth of Flynn Effect scholarly literature. Flynn Effect causal investigation has not yielded any decisive results, and the unproductive postulation of causal theories has recently stagnated, so researchers must accept a necessary shift in the focus of their research toward a more collaborative and holistic understanding of the Effect in order to effectively determine its causes. Extensive social implications of the Effect within the scopes of special education and judicial policy necessitate the expedited revitalization of Flynn Effect research such that contemporary society may be better able to appropriately incorporate the Effect into public policy.

Aliyu, Mohammed Musa. "The origin and properties of flint in the Upper Cretaceous chalk." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12963/.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most critical geological/technical challenges affecting engineering projects in chalk with flints either for hydrocarbon/water exploration or infrastructural development is encountering flints, which mostly result in excessive wear or damage to cutting tools or drilling/tunnelling equipment. Overcoming this requires a regional understanding of the engineering properties of flints which are linked to various factors including the genesis/diagenesis of flints. To date, the genesis of flints remains debatable and the controls on engineering properties of flints on a regional basis have not been systematically investigated. This study sets to investigate: the genesis of flints, the engineering properties of flints across various geographical locations, the variations in these properties with colour, structures, origin, and morphology of flints, and the tectonic history of the host chalk. To achieve these objectives a series of physicomechanical and petrophysical tests on flints and associated structures sampled from the Danish, English and French chalks have been carried out. A drillability test focusing on the grey and dark brownish grey flints using a standard tricone bit to reflect the rock mass characteristics of flint has been conducted. Petrographic studies comprising scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microcopy-cathodoluminescence and X-ray diffraction have then been applied to analyse the genesis, diagenesis, microstructures, microtexture, and mineral phase/composition of flints. Results support the biogenic origin of flints through a calcite-silica replacement process and illustrate that engineering properties of flints correlate with colour, origin, and the diagenesis of flints, plus the properties and tectonic history of the host chalk. This study demonstrates that physicomechanical properties of flints are controlled by their micro-structures/texture/fractures, structures, calcite inclusions and mineral compositions. The dark brownish grey flints with finer microtexture are the strongest, stiffest, densest, hardest, most abrasive and least porous materials with extremely high potentials to cause drill wear. By comparison, the grey flints located in a highly tectonized zone behave differently and are the weakest, less dense, less abrasive and the most porous flints with relatively lower potentials to cause drill wear. These findings offer new contributions to the understanding of the material properties of flints applicable to drillability prediction, tool wear evaluation and drilling/tunnelling system specifications in chalk with flints.

Subsequent chapters deal with the four major comic novels individually, studying the author's treatment of his major theme of man's failure to establish himself in a reasonable relationship with reality, and in particular the tonal and linguistic complexity of the narrative used to pursue this theme.

Abstract:
"Spark and Ruin: a Story of Re-beginning" is a multi-media concert dance work that addresses empathy as a physical and cognitive reactionary state, and utilizes dancing bodies as agents to facilitate this empathic experience. This work developed out of "The Flint Project," which investigates Flint, Michigan, "the most violent city in America," and a community characterized by racial tension and severe distinctions in class and social standing. This post-industrial, urban community serves as a microcosm through which we can examine how racial, social, and cultural politics intersect to establish systematic practices that challenge the possibility of the "American Dream." "The Flint Project" is a vehicle for creative research that investigates these systems and develops the material into a live performed event, "Spark and Ruin: a Story of Re-beginning". This performance includes installations featuring live performers and also various forms of media (including photography, film, and interactive "stations"). All of this material is constructed to contextualize the material for the viewer in a proscenium-style full-length dance performance. The objective of this piece is to establish a space for viewers to empathize with the material--to create an experience that will evolve into inquiry of systematic inequality as well as self-reflection of perception and bias. In facilitating this level of questioning, I aim to move viewers with compassion and heightened awareness of social inequity, as well as opportunities to chge the systems that enforce it.

This research examines the intersections of sexuality and gender identity and how differing socio-cultural networks are important to how we can begin to address multiple issues affecting rural America. The overarching question of the research was: How do sexuality and gender identity minorities living in rural areas experience or perceive where they live and the community networks that they navigate? Subtopics included the factors that contribute to an LGBT individual living in the Flint Hills, whether individual sexual and gender identities and perception affect concepts of location and community, and how one’s sexuality or gender identity affects the lived experience in a rural region. A multi-disciplinary approach based on Geography and LGBT Studies, using interviews and surveys of distinctive rural populations in the Flint Hills of Kansas, was applied. Five focus groups and 31 individual interviews yielded information about LGBT community concerns in the Flint Hills. A broader region was represented through an electronic survey which accessed a large population anonymously through a variety of social networking sites. The survey yielded 119 complete responses. Discrimination was a concern and sense of community was important. Many individuals acknowledged that they had a system of navigation of rural environments: where to go, to whom to speak openly, how to blend in to the larger population. Despite fears that were expressed, there was a sense of resilience among participants related to living in a relatively rural region. A sense of queer community and an acknowledgement of a rural community were important. Community connections are a major factor contributing to the individual’s lived experience and perception of the Flint Hills. For most of the participants, identity as a rural LGBT person or as part of the (relatively) rural queer community is important. There is a strong affinity to what individuals view as rural, and they view rural as being different from urban landscapes and communities.

Abstract:
The measurement of fluorine penetration into archeological flint artifacts using Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) has been reported to be a potential dating method. However, the mechanism of how fluorine is incorporated into the flint surface, and finally transported into the bulk is not well understood. This research focuses on the study of the fluorine uptake phenomenon of flint mineral in aqueous fluoride solutions. Both theoretical and experimental approaches have been carried out. In a theoretical approach, a pipe-diffusion model was used to simulate the complicated fluorine transportation problem in flint, in which several diffusion mechanisms may be involved.

Abstract:
Apache Flink is a stream processing framework that provides a unified state management mechanism which, at its core, treats stream processing as a sequence of distributed transactions. Flink handles failures, re-scaling and reconfiguration seamlessly via a form of a two-phase commit protocol that periodically commits all past side effects consistently into the state backends. This involves invoking and combining checkpoints and, in time of need, redistributing the state to resume data pipelines. All the existing Flink state backend implementations, such as RocksDB, are embedded and coupled with the compute nodes. Therefore, recovery time is proportional to the state needed to be reconfigured and that can take from a few seconds to hours. If application logic is compute-heavy and Flink’s tasks are overloaded, scaling out compute pipeline means scaling out storage together with compute tasks and vice-versa because of the embedded state backends. It also introduces delays due to expensive state re-shuffle and moving large state on the wire. This thesis work proposes the decoupling of the state storage from compute to improve Flink’s scalability. It introduces the design and implementation of a new State backend, FlinkNDB, that decouples state storage from compute. Furthermore, we designed and implemented new techniques to perform snapshotting, and failure recovery to reduce the recovery time close to zero.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the representation of language in the works of the 20th century Irish author Flann O'Brien (1911-1966). Flann O'Brien's bilingualism and ambiguous relation to language inspires his satirical fiction and chronicles through series of oppositions working at multiple levels of analysis in his writing, staging the diglottic relationship of speakers to their native longue, and the illusory quest of knowledge through language. This study makes use of the methods of pragmatics and discourse analysis (of Grice, Ducrot and Recanati, among others) to understand how Flann O'Brien's satire and comic writing subvert traditional conceptions of cooperative communication, and on a broader level, question the very notion of literary tradition. Through his language games and comic writing, Flann O'Brien depicts the postcolonial condition of Irish speakers and reveals his own complex and ambiguous position as an Irish author in a newly independent Ireland, after Joyce

Abstract:
In this work we propose to trace a path leading from a reading of Flann O’Brien’s novel, At Swim-Two-Birds, to its translation. In so doing we carry out two intersecting trajectories crossing at the point where theory and practice meet. The difficulty of translating this bilingual work written in both English and Irish, enjoins the necessity of delving into both the linguistic and cultural singularities present in these two languages, as well as into literary reflections that blur the line between literality and creativity. The foreign presence of the Irish language in At Swim-Two-Birds calls for a reexamination of the notion of untranslatability. It likewise sets in motion a reflection on the operations of transposition that come into play when translating two languages at once. The approach presented here distinguishes itself from binary, polarized approaches to text and translation, in particular with regard to bilingual texts. Translation is thought within the scope of an expansive spectrum, « in-language ». Translating in/t(w)o languages thus opens onto new approaches in traductology

Abstract:
The growing amount of position-dependent data (containing both geo position data (i.e. latitude, longitude) and also vehicle/driver-related information) collected from sensors on vehicles poses a challenge to computer programs to process the aggregate amount of data from many vehicles. While handling this growing amount of data, the computer programs that process this data need to exhibit low latency and high throughput – as otherwise the value of the results of this processing will be reduced. As a solution, big data and cloud computing technologies have been widely adopted by industry. This thesis examines a cloud-based processing pipeline that processes vehicle location data. The system receives real-time vehicle data and processes the data in a streaming fashion. The goal is to improve the performance of this streaming pipeline, mainly with respect to latency and cost. The work began by looking at the current solution using AWS Kinesis and AWS Lambda. A benchmarking environment was created and used to measure the current system’s performance. Additionally, a literature study was conducted to find a processing framework that best meets both industrial and academic requirements. After a comparison, Flink was chosen as the new framework. A new solution was designed to use Fink. Next the performance of the current solution and the new Flink solution were compared using the same benchmarking environment and. The conclusion is that the new Flink solution has 86.2% lower latency while supporting triple the throughput of the current system at almost same cost.

The purpose of our analysis was to examine production strategies in the backgrounder and stocker segments of the beef industry within the Flint Hills region of Kansas. The time period analyzed encompassed 1996-2015. September and November placements of steers in the backgrounding sector of the industry were analyzed with an intended March sale date. Placements considered included 425, 500, and 575 pound steers. April and May placements of steers were analyzed for the industry’s stocking sector with an intended July sale date. Placements considered included 450, 600, and 750 pound steers. Within our analysis historical ex-post net incomes were analyzed, prediction errors were calculated (net income, revenue, and cost of gain), and market incentives/signals were analyzed. While for our historical ex-post net income analysis we did not identify one of the four placement strategies as superior in all 20 years of our analysis, we did find scenarios that were typically superior to others. In terms of backgrounding, November placements were typically superior to September placements, in terms of stocking April placements were typically superior to May placements, and when comparing backgrounding and stocking scenarios stocking scenarios were typically superior. In terms of prediction errors, we found that revenue errors are the main drivers of net income error. In general, within the backgrounding scenarios typical producers who are representative of our model assumptions generally overestimate net incomes which is detrimental to them (make lower profits than they anticipate making), while in stocking scenarios producers underestimate net incomes which is generally beneficial to them (make larger profits than they anticipate making). Market signal/incentive and ex-post net income analysis both indicated that steer weight at time of sale was a large factor influencing backgrounder profitability and decision making, and that pasture rents were a large factor influencing stocker profitability and decision making. In all four scenarios it proved economically beneficial to place lighter steer rather than heavy steers. Further research may include, but is not limited to; adding bulls and heifers to our model, analyzing different placement weights within our model, and allowing for animal performance variability within our model.
