Virk, Akashdeep Singh. "Heat Transfer Characterization in Jet Flames Impinging on Flat Plates." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52985.

Full text
Abstract:
The experimental work involves calculation of radial distribution of heat transfer coefficient at the surface of a flat Aluminium plate being impinged by a turbulent flame jet. Heat transfer coefficient distribution at the surface is computed from the measured heat flux and temperature data using a reference method and a slope method. The heat transfer coefficient (h) has a nearly bell shaped radial distribution at the plate surface for H/d =3.3. The value of h drops by 37 % from r/d =0 to r/d= 2. Upon increasing the axial distance to H/d = 5, the stagnation point h decreased by 15%. Adiabatic surface temperature (AST) distribution at the plate surface was computed from the measured heat flux and temperature. AST values were found to be lower than the measured gas temperature values at the stagnation point. Radial distribution of gas temperature at the surface was estimated by least squares linear curve fitting through the convection dominated region of net heat flux data and was validated by experimental measurements with an aspirated thermocouple. For low axial distances (H/d =3.3), the gas temperature dropped by only 15 % from r/d = 0 to r/d = 2. Total heat flux distribution is separated into radiative and convective components with the use of calculated heat transfer coefficient and estimated gas temperatures. At H/d = 3.3, the radiation was found to be less than 25 % of the net heat flux for r/d ≤ 2.

Abstract:
During the last decade medical applications of textile sensors have been growing rapidly and textile sensors are the focal research point for many sensor projects. Textile sensors are still not available as a mainstream product to replace conventional electric sensors and electrodes. Textile sensors can be integrated in a textile garment to measure vital signs of a human being. In this regard stretch sensors are able to measure breathing rate of a person. In this project we use seamless knitting technique to make stretch sensors using conductive fibers. The resistance difference between stretching and relaxing of these sensors gives a pattern for human breathing. Four knitting structures with different conductive fibers are made and tested with cyclic tester to construct a graph between resistance and time to find the knitting structure which gives the best results. Tests are also done to check the results after washing. These sensors can be used in breathing monitoring of patients during daily life.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the implementation of neuromorphic algorithms, using, as a first step, data from a silicon retina, mimicking the human eye’s behavior, and then evolve towards all kind of event-based signals. These eventbased signals are coming from a paradigm shift in the data representation, thus allowing a high dynamic range, a precise temporal resolution and a sensor-level data compression. Especially, we will study the development of a high frequency monocular depth map generator, a real-time spike sorting algorithm for intelligent brain-machine interfaces, and an unsupervised learning algorithm for pattern recognition. Some of these algorithms (Optical flow detection, depth map construction from stereovision) will be in the meantime developed on available neuromorphic platforms (SpiNNaker, TrueNorth), thus allowing a fully neuromorphic pipeline, from sensing to computing, with a low power budget

Abstract:
This thesis addresses building of a new home for seniors with a special care on the street Zahradni in Pilsen. The relevant estate lies on the compound of a former paper mill on the right bank of the Radbuza river near the Papirensky bridge. When the proposition for the building was being drafted, an extra focus was placed on the special care regime. This means continuous home and nursing care with medical oversight including a guaranteed care for patients with special needs, such as those suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's disease or those with psychiatric issues in a stabilized stage. The proposed capacity of the home for the Aged consists of 142 beds in three above-ground floors, which also contain lounges that double as canteens. The underground floor houses the kitchen whit catering equipments, which will only be used for this object, the main lounge, exercise and creative areas, as well as staff rooms including those of the management. This type of a facility is currently in great demand in the Czech Republic due to the insufficient capacity of similar social and health facilities.

This project is focused on the conversion of the former factory area of OP Prostejov company, which is located in the Eastern part of the city Prostejov, close to the R46 highway. OP Prostejov company bankrupted in the year 2010 and since that year the area has been falling into disrepair. I approach this area in my thesis as new polyfunctional city district, which contains places for sport, relaxing, administration, commercialism, education, culture and living. I focus especially on the living function of this area, which is located in its Eastern part. Nowadays those buildings are being gradually dismantled, most of their parts have been practically taken out but the supporting construction system still remains. The view to those naked objects (bare steel-concrete skeleton) let us to see the energy of the historical development and also the legacy of the industrial past period. That historical view became the basement of my concept. My idea is to create different flats by the combination of separate units and residential containers (see scheme of flats). The flat solutions are done in some variations (from 1+kk to 3+kk). The entrances to the flats are from the external area, with some stairs and their own garden - it means analogically to live in family house, which is the dream of many people.

Abstract:
The vast progress of digitization creates problems for the seniors who find it hard to keep up with modern technology development. At the same time, the Swedish government has set itself the goal of digitizing health care by 2025. In connection with the trend of using flat design in digital platforms, the situation of seniors is further complicated and may have a negative effect in expanding the digital divide. Previous research shows that the style of the flat design is more difficult to understand than the traditional, skeuomorphic design previously used, as flat design lacks affordances. The aim of this thesis has been to investigate whether flat design is more difficult for seniors to understand than traditional skeuomorphic design, as well as how the design principle affordance could solve the problem of understanding flat design. The thesis has been guided by the question: How are seniors' understanding of flat design compared to traditional design in the context of websites and what significance does affordance have to support their understanding? To answer the question, a quantitative questionnaire survey and a qualitative observation study have been conducted to investigate the variables of the question based on previous theories. The result shows that affordance does not seem to affect how seniors understand a design interface. On the other hand, indications suggest that design principles such as visual clues, or signifiers, are important to consider when designing for a senior audience design.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Human body temperature is an important indicator of physical performance and condition in terms of comfort, heat or cold stress. The aim of this research was to develop Temperature Sensing Fabric (TSF) for continuous temperature measurement in healthcare applications. The study covers the development and manufacture of TSF by embedding fine metallic wire into the structure of textile material using a commercial computerised knitting machine. The operational principle of TSF is based on the inherent propensity of a metal wire to respond to changes in temperature with variation in its electrical resistance. Over 60 TSF samples were developed with combinations of different sensing elements, two inlay densities and highly textured polyester yarn as the base material. TSF samples were created using either bare or insulated wires with a range of diameters from 50 to 150 μm and metal wires of nickel, copper, tungsten, and nickel coated copper. In order to investigate the Temperature-Resistance (T-R) relationship of TSF samples for calibration purposes, a customised test rig was developed and monitoring software was created in the LabVIEW environment, to record the temperature and resistance signals simultaneously. TSF samples were tested in various thermal environments, under laboratory conditions and in practical wear trials, to analyse the relationship between the temperature and resistance of the sensing fabric and to develop base line specifications such as sensitivity, resistance ratio, precision, nominal resistance, and response time; the influence of external parameters such as humidity and strain were also monitored. The regression uncertainty was found to be less than in ±0.1°C; the repeatability uncertainty was found to be less than ±0.5°C; the manufacturing uncertainty in terms of nominal resistance was found to be ± 2% from its mean. The experimental T-R relationship of TSF was validated by modelling in the thermo-electrical domain in both steady and transient states. A maximum error of 0.2°C was found between the experimental and modelled T-R relationships. TSF samples made with bare wire sensing elements showed slight variations in their resistance during strain tests, however, samples made with insulated sensing elements did not demonstrate any detectable strain-dependent-resistance error. The overall thermal response of TSF was found to be affected by basal fabric thickness and mass; the effect of RH was not found to be significant. TSF samples with higher-resistance sensing elements performed better than lower-resistance types. Furthermore, TSF samples made using insulated wire were more straightforward to manufacture because of their increased tensile strength and exhibited better sensing performance than samples made with bare wire. In all the human body wear trials, under steady-state and dynamic conditions both sensors followed the same trends and exhibited similar movement artifacts. When layers of clothing were worn over the sensors, the difference between the response of the TSF and a high-precision reference temperature were reduced by the improved isothermal conditions near the measurement site.

Abstract:
In order to overcome the challenges associated with the design of high resolution image sensors, we propose, through this thesis, an innovative asynchronous event-driven image sensor based on non-uniform sampling. The proposed image sensor aims the reduction of the data flow and its associated data processing by limiting the activity of our image sensor to the new captured information. The proposed asynchronous image sensor is based on an event-driven pixels that incorporate a non-uniform sampling crossing levels. Unlike conventional imagers, where the pixels are read systematically at each frame, the proposed event-driven pixels are only read when they hold new and relevant information. This induces a reduced and scene dependent data flow.In this thesis, we introduce a complete pixel reading sequence. Beside the event-driven pixel, the proposed reading system is designed using asynchronous logic and adapted to control and manage the flow of data from event pixels. This digital reading system overcomes the traditional difficulties encountered in the management of simultaneous requests for event pixels without degrading the resolution and fill factor of the image sensor. In addition, the proposed reading circuit significantly reduces the spatial redundancy in an image which further reduces the data flow. Finally, by combining the aspect of level crossing sampling and the proposed reading technique, we replaced the conventional analog to digital conversion of the pixel processing chain by a time-to-digital Conversion (TDC). In other words, the pixel information is coded by time. This results in an increased reduction in power consumption of the vision system, the analog-digital converter being one of the most consuming reading system of conventional image sensors components

Abstract:

The usage of wireless sensor network is increasingly being applied to people s everyday lives everywhere: from energy consumption in households and buildings in general, to vital signs in assistive medicine, infrastructure monitoring, chemical or biological product leaking detection in industries, better surveillance, environmental monitoring, among many others. WSN can be deployed in different densities next to several thousands of nodes. However, the development of WSN solutions are limited mainly by energy resource restriction. The great challenge to WSN solutions is to increase the network longevity while guaranteeing data delivery, reliability and accuracy in an environment prone to different types of failures. The largest source of energy consumption is data transmission. Thus, solutions to WSN needs to avoid intense communication keeping energy consumption balance and so the network longevity. In applications in which high density of nodes is necessary, sensing process can produce a large amount of data which are similar or redundant, due to the special proximity among the nodes. This spatial proximity can be explored in routing solutions to reduce the amount of messages transmitted throughout the network. This work presents the Spatial Correlation Aware Routing Protocol - SCARP , which makes use of spatial correlation to reduce the number of network transmissions. With SCARP, the WSN is configured in cells and nodes of each cell are selected, in an alternated way, to transmit similar or redundant data, and so reducing the number of transmitted messages. This traffic reduction results in less energy consumption and longer network longevity. Evaluation results show that SCARP outperforms similar solutions described in the literature, such as DAARP, which uses clustering and aggregation. SCARP has a positive performance even for large node density scenarios.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis elaborates on the design of a new building of freestanding retirement home in the town of Litomyšl. The design of the retirement home is in the form of project documentation for the construction. The new building includes a partial basement and three floors. The main purpose is to build a building for housing with flats for seniors and to provide health care to seniors living here and from the surrounding area. On the 1st floor, there is an administrative part, a doctor's office with the possibility of rehabilitation and a dining room with facilities for food preparation, which is imported into the home. The dining room serves both the guests and the public. The remaining part of the first floor consists of social, administrative and utility rooms. On the 2nd and 3rd floors, there are individual apartments for clients with a common room for visits and spending their free time. On the 1st floor, there is a maintenance center, boiler room, server room, furniture store, and estate depository. Basement walls are monolithic, made of reinforced concrete. The construction system of the above-ground floors is wall-mounted, bidirectional and made of ground brick blocks. The ceilings and staircases are monolithic, made of reinforced concrete. External walls are insulated with a contact thermal insulation systems. The building is mainly based on footings or foot anchors. The retirement home is located on the edge of the town near the Litomyšl Hospital. The land is suitable for construction, as it is located in the area for the construction of civil buildings.

Abstract:
With technological advances in recent decades, the complexity and operating speeds of integrated circuits have greatly increased. While these developments have reduced dimensions and supply voltages of circuits, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of components has been highly degraded. Identified as a technological lock, EMC is now one of the main causes of circuits re-designs because issues related to generating and coupling noise mechanisms are not sufficiently studied during their design. This manuscript introduces a methodology to study propagation of electromagnetic disturbances through integrated circuits by measurements and simulations. To improve our knowledge about propagation of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) and coupling mechanisms through integrated circuits, we designed a test vehicle developed in the SMOS8MV® 0.25µm technology from Freescale Semiconductor. In this circuit, several basic functions such as I/O bus and digital blocks have been implemented. Asynchronous on-chip voltage sensors have also been integrated on different supplies of the chip to analyze propagation of disturbances injected on supply pins and wires of the component (DPI and BCI injection). In addition, we propose various tools to facilitate modeling and simulations of Integrated Circuit’s immunity (PCB model extraction, injection systems modeling approaches, innovative method to predict and correlate levels of voltage / power injected during conducted immunity measurements, modeling flow). Each tool and modeling method proposed is evaluated on different test cases. To assess our modeling approach, we finally apply it on a digital block of our test vehicle and compare simulation results to various internal and external measurements performed on the circuit
