Abstract:
Upon receipt of an invitation to participate in this conference and present a paper on the subject of Breakwater Construction, I was happy to accept, feeling that I would benefit to a far greater degree than my contribution to a subject in which I, and the concern which I represent, have had a deep interest for many years. Our experience embraces some of the major jetty and sea wall construction in San Francisco Bay, viz: Treasure Island, Mare Island, Alameda Naval Air Station, Sacramento and San Joaquin River bank protection and other jetties along the Northern California Coast, including Crescent City. This paper is limited to breakwater construction on the basis of our experience previously mentioned. The subject has been divided into two parts, namely, (1) construction of jetties, or breakwaters which can be built by use of floating equipment and (2) construction of jetties which are not practicable to be built by use of floating equipment.

Floating port is a barge made of rectangular steel or concrete that can float to adjust the water lavel. Barge is a cargo ship type do not have a propulsion system. So, design of floating port preferably aqual to ship design. There are 3 types of barge construction system, that are longitudinal system, transversal system and mixed construction. To get the optimal design of floating port, comparison of design based on the construction system is needed. Case study in this research ia a Tideng Pale-KTT floating port. Deformation and stress analysis using FEA method on 2 models of construction system, that are transversal and longitudinal. Based on results, both of construction system produce a good strength value. However, there are some construction component which does not match the placement of the construction system. Results of construction costs have 5,51% deviation, longitudinal sytem is more expensive. So, produce the hypotheses to do a combination for both of construction systems.

Abstract:
Modular floating pontoon is a floating device commonly used as civil and marine construction. Pontoon is usually made of steel and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Although the steel and HDPE has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of economic, strength, and capacity. However the study of alternative raw materials for modular floating pontoon construction as multipurpose floating equipment is needed. Ferrocement which is familiar in the used for building construction material is an alternative material. Since the material is easy to find and it is such a versatile material that can be mass produced and has the mechanical strength that is simillar to steel and other materials. Following that condition the research is focused on the application of ferrocement technology for modular floating floating pontoon. The results show that the principal dimension of modular floating pontoon are length 80 cm, width 80 cm, height 75 cm, with the lightweight draft of pontoons is 30 cm. The material proportions for the modular floating pontoon are sand 48.2%, cement 34.5% and water 17.3%. Modular floating pontoon series consists of four Pontoons Square compiled with interlink (hook) so that the total of the package pontoon has a 160 cm long, 160 cm wide and 75 cm high.

Abstract:
To implement deep foundation pit of subway construction with underground continuous wall adopting underwater excavation and waterproofing concrete bottom sealing curtain, the depth of bottom concrete must first meet the anti-floating requirements of the foundation pit. Since the elevation of the bottom slab of the station is certain, the thicker the sealing concrete, the deeper the excavation depth of the foundation pit, the greater the buoyancy of the water to be withstood, and eventually the thicker the sealing concrete, so the selection of foundation pit anti-floating scheme is very critical. This paper combines the practical construction of the deep foundation pit of the main structure of Yongdingmenwai station which is in the third phase of Beijing Metro Line 8 construction project, and analyzes and compares the anti-floating scheme of the foundation pit, so as to select a more reasonable anti-floating scheme, in order to apply experiences for future similar projects and construction.

Abstract:
For the purpose to provide a reference for ecological floating island construction of Liao river, this paper simulated different flow velocity to research the stability of floating island with different fixation methods based on the actual hydrological data of Liao river at the comprehensive experimental base of Shenyang agricultural university. Results show that the stability of floating island with different fixation methods under different flow velocity have significant difference. The data of longitudinal displacement shows the stability of staking floating island is best, the following one is cableway and the sinker is worse. The data of lateral displacement shows the stability of cableway floating island is best, the following one is staking and the sinker is worse. The data of vertical floating displacement shows the stability of cableway floating island is best, the following one is sinker and the staking is worse. Comprehensively, the stability of cableway floating island is best, staking is better and the sinker is less stable. Consequently, this study recommended the cableway and staking floating island as the ideal types in experimental construction in Liaohe river.

This thesis details the ongoing development of a new Offshore Floating Nuclear Plant (OFNP) concept that exhibits a promising potential for economic and rapid deployment on a global scale. The OFNP creatively combines state-of-the-art Light Water Reactors (LWRs) and floating platforms similar to those used in offshore oil and gas operations. A reliable and cost-effective global supply chain exists for both technologies, which enables a robust expansion in the use of nuclear energy on a time scale consistent with combating climate change in the near future. The OFNP is a plant that can be entirely built within a floating platform in a shipyard, transferred to the site, where it is anchored within 12 nautical miles (22 km) off the coast in relatively deep water (=/> 100 m), and connected to the grid via submarine AC transmission cables. Shipyard construction ensures a supply of qualified workers and facilities, and it brings mass-production-like construction efficiency to existing reactor designs. Eventual shipyard decommissioning allows sites to immediately return to a "green field" condition when the plant's life is spent. The crews would operate in monthly or semi-monthly shifts with onboard living quarters, similar to oil and gas platforms. The OFNP is a nuclear plant specifically designed for the global market: it can be constructed in one country or multiple countries and exported internationally. It lends itself to a flexible and mobile electricity generation strategy, which minimizes the need for indigenous nuclear infrastructure in the host country and does not commit the customer to a 40 to 60 years-long project.

Byres, Ronald David. "The application of floating breakwaters in British Columbia." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28370.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature of British Columbia coastal and inland waterways affords many locations where floating breakwaters are or could be used to protect small-craft harbours from wave action. A field survey of many of the current breakwater sites is undertaken in order to establish qualitative performance criteria of various designs. A two-dimensional numerical model is developed to predict the oscillatory response and wave transmission characteristics for a number of common breakwater designs. Finally, experiments with two configurations of breakwater models were carried out in the Hydraulics Laboratory at the University of British Columbia. The experiments were designed to validate the numerical model and to estimate viscous damping coefficients required in the numerical solution.

Abstract:
AbstractDeductive verification has been successful in verifying interesting properties of real-world programs. One notable gap is the limited support for floating-point reasoning. This is unfortunate, as floating-point arithmetic is particularly unintuitive to reason about due to rounding as well as the presence of the special values infinity and ‘Not a Number’ (NaN). In this paper, we present the first floating-point support in a deductive verification tool for the Java programming language. Our support in the KeY verifier handles arithmetic via floating-point decision procedures inside SMT solvers and transcendental functions via axiomatization. We evaluate this integration on new benchmarks, and show that this approach is powerful enough to prove the absence of floating-point special values—often a prerequisite for further reasoning about numerical computations—as well as certain functional properties for realistic benchmarks.

Abstract:
AbstractTools that automatically prove the absence or detect the presence of large floating-point roundoff errors or the special values NaN and Infinity greatly help developers to reason about the unintuitive nature of floating-point arithmetic. We show that state-of-the-art tools, however, support or provide non-trivial results only for relatively short programs. We propose a framework for combining different static and dynamic analyses that allows to increase their reach beyond what they can do individually. Furthermore, we show how adaptations of existing dynamic and static techniques effectively trade some soundness guarantees for increased scalability, providing conditional verification of floating-point kernels in realistic programs.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper presents a novel approach for quantifier instantiation in Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) that leverages syntax-guided synthesis (SyGuS) to choose instantiation terms. It targets quantified constraints over background theories such as (non)linear integer, reals and floating-point arithmetic, bit-vectors, and their combinations. Unlike previous approaches for quantifier instantiation in these domains which rely on theory-specific strategies, the new approach can be applied to any (combined) theory, when provided with a grammar for instantiation terms for all sorts in the theory. We implement syntax-guided instantiation in the SMT solver CVC4, leveraging its support for enumerative SyGuS. Our experiments demonstrate the versatility of the approach, showing that it is competitive with or exceeds the performance of state-of-the-art solvers on a range of background theories.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the preliminary design of the Deep Turbine Installation-Floating (DTI-F) concept. The DTI-F concept is a hybrid spar buoy-based floating offshore substructure capable of supporting a 7MW wind turbine with the uniqueness of being able to raise and lower the tower and nacelle, which simplifies construction, installation, maintenance, and decommissioning. A relevant subset of design load cases (DLCs) derived from the International Electrotechnical Commission (ICE) standards is simulated with NREL-FAST software, and the aero-elastic loads are used for the structural assessment. The paper presents the principal dimensions and crucial hydrostatic and hydrodynamic properties. The floating platform with three different mooring configurations is designed using ANSYS AQWA software, and the design is validated with experiments in laboratory conditions. The paper evaluates the design regarding the natural frequencies and the stability of the platform for a chosen site off the Scottish coast. Further, a novel construction method, the materials chosen for the construction, and the installation and assembly processes are also outlined.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to present the different floating bridge solutions that have been evaluated for the crossing of Bjørnafjorden. It appears to be feasible to place the navigation channel either in the middle of the fjord or in the vicinity of the southern shore. In both scenarios a straight bridge alternative anchored to the seabed and a curved solution without mooring lines are evaluated.
